Command window won't open Windows 8 (too) [SOLVED]

I can't get the normal cmd window to open, in Windows 8. It was the same in Windows 7, so obviously something has been transferred (or remained unchanged) when I upgraded to Win8.
Symptoms: I run cmd from win-R: conhost.exe is started every time, command window process is also started - BUT - there is no visible window! (Same if I run the command from the menu, run as administrator, whatever)
I have seen this problem decribed by other users in the World for some time before, but still haven't found any solution.
I suspect there is some policy setting, that prevents this window from opening. I found a proposed removal of policy settings; tried it, but it didn't make any difference.
What policy settings could theoretically influence this?

I can provide ProcMon output, but I can't interpret it - it's too much information for me.
Perhaps a better tool would be ProcExp.  If the task is really there and you have cmd.exe which are both visible and invisible it can at least give you a clue about how it was started and its relationship with other started tasks.
ProcMon shows all the steps to producing the result that you are seeing.  You could start with a restrictive filter such as showing only Process & Threads and then comparing the patterns of successful and unsuccessful attempts at starting cmd.exe
only from that perspective.
Coincidentally I have just found a new toy you might be able to use easily for comparison purposes too:  wmic.exe
E.g. for some capturable data about your problem tasks enter:
process where name='cmd.exe' list /format
Do it for conhost.exe too.

FWIW I have been oblivious of conhost.exe until seeing it mentioned in this incident.  What does it do?...
I don't know but a search shows some other diagnostics which may also be easier to interpret than a ProcMon trace.  E.g. we should have thought about checking the Event log before this.  (But ProcMon would be showing you whether there
was a write done to it as a result of your test.  <eg>)
Good luck

  • CS6 Dreamweaver software won't open, how do I solve this problem?

    I have CS6 (not cloud) installed on my computer, I use Photoshop and Illustrator regularly with no problems.  I recently got a freelance job that requires me to use Dreamweaver.  I've used it in the past but it's been some time since I've opened the program.  Recently I've tried to launch CS6 Dreamweaver and the Application won't open, but my Illustrator and Photoshop programs open just fine.  I tried to update my software through the Adobe Application Manager but its claiming that the update has failed and cannot be applied.  Is there a reason my applications are not working properly?

    If you have turned on your hidden folders (which is necessary in both PC and Mac to see the folders at the correct locations) and they don't exist, a full reinstall is going to be the only thing that will get you going most likely.
    Use the cleaner tool reinstallation steps available here: Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • I upgraded to Lion, Excel won't open, and what is "Solver" found in the "Launchpad"?

    I upgraded to Lion last night, I have Mac OX X 10.7.1 and all other Microsoft Office products (Word & PowerPoint) work just fine, but within the "Launchpad" of Lion, there is an icon called "Solver).  When I click on it, the Excel - icon opens up but the program does NOT, and something called "Solver" (found in the Launchpad) also opens up but immediately shuts down, showing an error.  WTH???

    Hello jburrett,
    From what you are describing it sounds like iTunes thinks the files are there, but they are missing or have been relocated. Use this article to locate the files.

  • In Mac OS 10.6, why won't the command n keyboard shortcut open a new firefox window?

    Ever since Firefox 3, command n does not open up a new window. I'm on a Mac, OS 10.6

    Hello cor-el,
    Yes, I do use a 2 monitor set up. And Yes!!! moving the Firefox window to the main or 1st monitor allows use of command n shortcut to open a new window. You're a genius. Thank you soo much!
    Naturally, the reason I use a 2 monitor set up is to have Firefox open on the 2nd monitor for quick reference and easy access. Is there a workaround that will allow me to keep this configuration? (I know, I'm getting greedy now!)
    Many Thanks,

  • Navigatetourl won't open in same window and in infinite refresh

    I have a project that requires a skip button and to go to a specified url in the same window once the animation is complete. The button works, however the navigatetourl in the last frame is not behaving.
    Here is the code I've placed in the last frame:
    addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, fl_EnterFrameHandler);
    function fl_EnterFrameHandler(event:Event):void
        //Start your custom code
        // This example code displays the words "Entered frame" in the Output panel.
        navigateToURL(new URLRequest("http://www.student.nvcc.edu/home/amlayne/ite170/dreamweaver/graded_assignments/index.html"), "_self");
        stop();
        // End your custom code
    I've tried moving it to an earlier frame, placing a stop in the earlier frame, moving the stop command to after and so on. No matter what I do, the new url opens in a new window and is in a constant state of refresh. I also have the loop turned off but the animation begins to load the first frame again anyway.  Please help. I've tried many fixed listed in forums that are all about the same with no different results.  You can view my animation here: http://www.student.nvcc.edu/home/amlayne/ite170/flash/graded%20assignments/myintro.html
    NOTE: You will have to close the browser to get the refresh to stop.
    I've been working on this one issue two days and am at a complete loss.

    Any thoughts on why my button now won't open in the same window? I'm getting a sense the built in code snippets don't work as they should, or I'm just making silly mistakes. Here's the code:
    btnSkip1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fl_MouseClickHandler);
    function fl_MouseClickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void
              // Start your custom code
              // This example code displays the words "Mouse clicked" in the Output panel.
    navigateToURL(new URLRequest("http://www.student.nvcc.edu/home/amlayne/ite170/dreamweaver/graded_assignments/index.html"), "_self")
              // End your custom code

  • Windows 7/Bridge won't open files in Photoshop CS6 (cloud)

    I recently got the cloud CS6 and installed photoshop cs6, then uninstalled CS5.5. But now, Windows Explorer cannot seem to find Photoshop. If I try to associate the default for any file (.jpeg, .tiff, etc.) with Photoshop, Photoshop does not show up on the list of programs. I must browse to find  Photoshop exe (CS6 64). I click okay, but it continues to open the file in Windows picture viewer and to associate that file type with Windows Picture Viewer.
    If I right-click on the file, it does exactly the same thing. I must browse to Photoshop.exe. But it still opens the file in Windows Picture Viewer.
    Fix 1 Try Bridge Associations: I opened Bridge CS6->Edit>Preferences and made sure the files were associated with photoshop. But, when I then try to open the files from within Bridge, I get the message Windows cannot find c:Program Files\Adobe\AdobePhotoshop CS4 (64Bit)\Photoshop.exe. (my emphasis)  But I haven't had CS4 installed for years. I did not have this problem when I installed CS5. So now I can't open files from either Windows explorer or Adobe Bridge.
    Fix 2 Fix the Registry: So, I opened Regedit and went to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\open\command, and changed the (Default) from "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1" to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1" . Don't know why the install left this at CS5.1. It SHOULD have changed it. EUREKA! Windows now recognizes Photoshop CS6 and I can associate files with it as usual. But I had to manually associate the native .psd file with Photoshop. along with .jpeg, .tiff and other image files.
    No Fix for Bridge: But back in Bridge CS6, it's not so rosy. I still get Windows cannot find c:Program Files\Adobe\AdobePhotoshop CS4 (64Bit)\Photoshop.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. If I try File--Open with--Photoshop (default), I get the same message. Clearly, Bridge thinks Photoshop CS4 is the default, and I don't know where to change that association. Preferences does not allow browsing. So Bridge is pretty much useless.
    So what should I do about Bridge?
    Bridge CS6 still won't open Photoshop CS6. It's still looking for CS4. I thought about reinstalling Bridge, but when I try to download it, the cloud tells me it is is already installed and won't download. I am a little worried about uninstalling it and trying again. Maybe, I'll end up with no Bridge at all. I am beginning to regret my decision to go cloud. Don't know if the install mess is just cloud or noncloud versions as well. Doesn't seem to apply to all programs either.
    Postcript:
    I had to go to the registry and manually change CS5.1 to CS6 for InDesign and Illustrator as well, and then manually associate .indd and .ai files with those programs. What a pain this is. Obviously, the install program didn't change the normal associations to CS6. Left them with the CS5, and then when I uninstalled that--as anyone would normally do--it lost the association completely.

    Thank you David__B! Your suggestion worked perfectly. All the files are correctly associated in both Explorer and Bridge. And it didn't take all that long, mostly uninstalling. The Adobe App Manager very efficiently installs several different programs with very little fuss.
    I am not sure, but I think it may have been an old plug-in to Bridge back in the CS4 era that I didn't even know I had that was causing the Bridge file association problems. Uninstalling CS5 after installing CS6 seems to be causing Win Explorer problems, not just for me.  Based on this experience, I would recommend that anyone with several previous installations of Adobe CS do the following:
    Save your plugins and preference files in a back up file.
    Uninstall all the old adobe software.
    Run the the cleaner you suggested. (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html).
    Install CS6 programs from the CCloud or wherever.
    Add your plug-ins back in as you need them one at a time to be sure they work.
    If you have already installed CS6 and are having file association problems, just uninstall everything and start at step one. You probably won't save time trying to fix the registry and manually associate file types--- yada yada yada.
    Steps 1-6 will give you a nice clean install and salvage only  good plug-ins.

  • I've tried to troubleshoot downloading Firefox but it won't open on Windows XP. The Firefox Update box with the hour glass symbol runs for hours. Then I have trouble even shutting down. When I click on Firefox, no window, program won't quit, etc....

    Windows XP. I used to use Firefox and it worked okay. I'm not sure why I downloaded a new version but it won't open. The window that says "Firefox Update" continues to try to load. Hour glass symbol, for hours. If I try to click on the Desktop symbol, Nothing. Then when I try to shut down, it's slow, programs won't quit, or it freezes. I've removed Firefox completely and tried downloading again with the same results. Even with the latest version. Shit. Whassup?

    Hi zenithtwc, to test whether this is a settings issue, could you do a three-minute experiment?
    '''Create a new Firefox profile'''
    A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
    Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
    firefox.exe -P
    ''Don't delete anything here.'' Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
    Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like Test731, and skip the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
    Can it reach the internet?
    When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

  • Windows XP - iTunes Store won't open?

    I have Windows XP on my laptop and I installed the latest iTunes update on Monday and since then I have not been able to get to the iTunes store. It tries to load but stops and then the screen in just white. I don't know if it has to do with the new update or what because before this, I never had any problems with accessing he iTunes Store.

    So. I've been having the same problem too. And it's been unable to reach the store for quite a while. And on and  on and on. The reason I'm posting is to offer up some sort of hope to get back to the store. This is the second time I've installed a "current" iTunes version and the 2nd time the store won't open. The first time, I found a solution here  that I can't seem to find anymore. As best I can remember - and that's the thing, I don't remember the step by step process entirely - I first had to rename the extensions on my iTunes library so that my current version couldn't read it. Then I had to unistall each and every program that  had to do with Apple. iTunes, iTunesHelper, Bonjour, and there's at least one more, Push I think and maybe more. Thing is, the original poster of the solution I used back  then had a specific order in which to uninstall the programs, and  I cannot remeber it. At any rate, once  I did those things, I then sought out the last known working version of iTunes that could access the store. I installed it, changed my library extensions back, and viola, it actually worked. Thing is, I trusted that the problem would  be a one time thing and Apple wouldn't let it happen again - so I went ahead and updated once the 2nd version of 10.4 came out. And darn it if  I'm not back here again. Anyway. The rough answer to the problem is to roll back your iTunes version to the last one that worked. I don't necessarily suggest you try to roll back unless you know step by step how, I just wanted to post something because I keep coming to these forums and  no one has an answer and I can't seem to find the one I used before but wanted you to know that there is one in here somewhere, or there used to be, and it works.
    One caveat: This is assuming you know it's not firewall and you know "yes, my computer is connected to the internet" - in other words you've checked all the basics and you really just know it's iTunes.

  • I am not able to open my 'system preferences' it shows up on top, but the window just won't open. I haven't installed anything new, I have also restarted my computer, but still encounter this problem. Help?

    I am not able to open my 'system preferences' it shows up on top, but the window just won't open. I haven't installed anything new, I have also restarted my computer, but still encounter this problem. Help?

    Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
    OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
    OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
    OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
         Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
                     if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • XCode 4.6.2 Won't open any window when launched

    Hi,
    I have been running Xcode On OS X 10.7.5 for quite a while without any problem. Launching XCode I had an update request to which I agreed. After the update lauching the XCode won't open any window. I have seen that there were similar problems but on previous versions of XCode.
    I deleted the application from Mission control and dowloaded again from the Mac App Store. Lauching XCode still won't open any window. No freeze, no error messages, the applications sits in the dock and is marked as open, but now window appears.
    Your help would be welcome.
    Regards.
    Alain.

    Hi,
    I am going to reply to my own question.
    The main Xcode Window didn't open by default as I was used too, but had to be selected from the windows menu.
    Too simple I guess!!!!

  • Palm Desktop 6.2 update won't open after installing on PC running Windows XP

    I just installed the new version of Palm Desktop 6.2 on my Dell laptop running Windows XP Media Center to upgrade it from the older version and it won't open up. Whenever I try to open the application the message "Palm Desktop by ACCESS Application has encountered a problem and needs to close..." I've tried reinstalling the application but that doesn't help. I've also tried using the "Repair" of the installation to "Repair installation errors in the program." and it hasn't helped either. All my data on my Palm Centro is still there but I can't get Palm Desktop to open up. I want to get Palm Desktop to open up.

    Palm Desktop 6.2.2 is not an upgrade to 4.x!   It was designed to fix the things Microsoft broke when Vista was born.
    It lacks many features that existed for many years in the 4.x versions.
    I'd suggest doing a Clean Uninstall and reinstall your original version!

  • Dreamweaver CS5 won't open on Windows 7

    Hello all. I installed CS5 Web Premium on a Windows 7 machine. Every CS5 application works except for Dreamweaver. I tried replacing, renaming and removing the "updaternotifications.dll" file and the application still won't open. I also disabled the registry key that gives Adobe CS5 the ability to automatically search for updates. Please help.

    Hey rcshield thanks for your help.
    I managed to find a solution in a different adobe forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4176387#4176387
    nylonblade's post:
    "Windows 7 users' possible fix
    Hi all Win7 users of DW CS5 that dies after the splash screen.  You might want to try recreating your DW preferences as described here:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/839/cpsid_83912.html#main_Restore7V
    It worked for me.  I think the problem was caused by running CCleaner which deleted the wrong registry key.  Bad CCleaner!  Be careful running those "helpful" system cleaners, folks.  They can royally screw up a computer if you trust them too far.
    Anyway, DW CS5 is back in action for me at least.
    Regards
    Mark"
    Worked for me.
    Thanks

  • Console Window won't open

    Have 2, i7 MBPR. One is running 10.8.5 and one is running Maverick 10.9.4. On the one with 10.9.4, whenever I launch the console.app, the window won't open. Even when I choose "New Log Window" or command n from the menu. The MBPR running 10.8.5, the console.app works as it should. Anyone else running 10.9.x experience the same and found a fix?

    Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Then re-install the OS.
