Comparing access specifiers Protected

Question

Why protected access specifiers are used ? .
Where comes the difference of using
void fun1(int a,intb)
and
protected void fun(int a, int b)
}

Note that I did experiment in a variable as protected
not in a method
I did both but saw no diffrence from
no-access Specifiers and
protected access specifiers
I extend it two times and
used package one time
but saw no difference .
I am sure ...U can help me !!!
