Compile error Identifying Javax.servlet

Hi,
I installed JDK 1.6 and Tomcat server.
But when I use this code it shows the error
import javax.servlet;It says package not available.
How can I resolve this error.?
Can anybody help me who are already using Tomcat and JSP

Because you've done something wrong. The compiler won't just ignore a dependency, as a jokeAs I posted earlier, the obvious problem is that one cannot just import a package, one has to import classes from that package (using * if one wants to import ALL classes in the package).I assumed he'd made a typo in his post there. Trying to import like he's actually posted, the compiler would moan about not finding the symbol servlet, rather than moan about a missing package
Irrelevant, either way, since he's clearly been kidnapped by those aliens again

    Hi,
    The file servlet-api.jar / servlet.jar is not available in your classpath.
    To compile an Servlet you need the jar file to be in classpath.
    The jar file can be found in your webserver / application server lib folder.

  • ANT script genrated error: package javax.servlet does not exist

    Hi there,
    I am running ANT and confronted this message:
        [javac] Compiling 1 source file to C:\eclipseProjects\tomcat_test
        [javac] C:\eclipseProjects\tomcat_test\WEB-INF\src\WebTest.java:4: package javax.servlet does not exist
        [javac] import javax.servlet.ServletException;
        [javac] ^I googled around and found this solution:
    servlet-api.jar is the jarfile that contains javax.servlet.ServletException and javax.servlet.http.* which are imported by WebTest.java and must therefore be found in the classpath. If javac doesn't find this jar (or the javax.servlet packages), it will say (or shout, depending on my and javac's mood): [the error message]
    well...I set in the classpath the location of the servlet-api.jar
    (found at: C:\Tomcat\common\lib)
    I set it with the environment variable (windows xp)
    Just as it's shown here: http://www.cs.usask.ca/~wew036/latex/env-env.jpg
    NOTHING :-(
    could anyone assist, thanks

    Hi..seems u r new to J2ee.. dont worry its a very small problem:
    Here is the solution.. yes u have to edit the environment variables:..
    I am using J2EE sdk 1.4 and running on xp
    This is the classpath setting:
    C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\j2ee.jar;
    This is the PATH setting
    C:\Sun\AppServer\bin;
    Good Luck :)

  • "javac blahblah.java" returned with error: package javax.servlet.http does,

    I do have servlet-api.jar in the classpath.
    This is ApacheTomcat 5.5.25, JVM version 1.5.0_04-b05,
    javac -J-version
    java version "1.4.2_13"
    What am I missing?

    The environment variabele $classpath is only used by the java runtime, not by the java compiler.Are you certain of that Balusc?
    Granted I don't use the command line to compile things much, but I'm pretty sure it uses the CLASSPATH environment variable if you don't specify a -cp or -classpath.
    Can you please show the
    - error message/stacktrace
    - value of CLASSPATH environment variable
    - command line you are using to compile the class
    - an excerpt from the class itself.

    Its giving me symbol not resolve errors for the
    following symbols
    ServletException, ServletConfig, ServletResponse etc.
    How can I get around with these errors?
    Zulfi.

    Sorry, but i handled with Servlets some time ago.
    Servlets are not contained in the standard SDK.
    There has been a servlet development kit, but it seems not to exist any more. (I cant't find it)
    But servlet technology is included in java server pages and other web applications, so you have to download i.g. J2EE SDK and to install it, to find the classes you need.
    (It's included in other packages too, i think.)
    http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/download.html
    If you've installed the used packages, then include only the packages you need. (Doc's should help)
    Make shure that the packages are included in your classpath.
    (Have been the files server.jar and servlet.jar in "former" times.)
    Sorry, but i can't give more advice, 'cause im not up to date with this subject.
    Maybe someone else can help?
    Good luck again.

    I think that I have an older version of servlet class files... is there any way to solve the following issue?
    in old version, getServletContext() method isn't included in HttpSession object. is there any way to get around this problem? cuz our client has an old version... i am not sure if it's possible...
    HttpSession session = e.getSession () ;
    // Retreive our context so we can initialize the runtime settings.
    ServletContext context = session.getServletContext () ;
    i'd greatly appreciated in advance...

    sorry, in e.getSession(), "e" object comes from "HttpSessionBindingEvent"

  • [import javax.servlet.*;] Compilation error

    Hi,
    The java compiler cannot find javax.servlet.*; in Windows XP.
    I tried copying servlet-api.jar under c:\sun\SDK\lib and c:\Sun\sdk\jdk\lib.
    Also I set the CLASSPATH to:
    .;C:\Sun\SDK\jdk\lib;C:\Sun\SDK\lib;
    But I still get the error at compilation time.
    Also I don't know how to create a project that would use the correct library and compile just that servlet code.
    Many thanks for your help.

    Hi Xakep,
    I have managed to compile the servlet, thanks to your help.
    I have copied the servlet-api.jar under the directory C:\Sun\SDK\jdk\jre\lib
    But in fact that was not enough if I chose to create a Java Project, because then the IDE is blind and can't see servlet-api.jar.
    So I created a new project "Tomcat Project" and this time the .jar was visible, so I managed to build the servlet.class.
    Also I wanted to compile from the command line so I used the classpath flag:
    javac -classpath c:\sun\sdk\jdk\jre\lib\servlet-api.jar WelcomeServlet.javaMany thanks for your help

  • Import javax.servlet.* gives error "package does not exist"

    I am working through Monica Pawlan's book "Essentials of Java PL".
    My PC runs Windows2000 prof. I have downloaded and installed j2sdk-1_3_1_01-win.exe in c:\jdk1.3.1_01
    I have downloaded and installed tomcat4.0 (jakarta-tomcat-4.0.zip) into c:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0
    CATALINA_HOME is set to c:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0 and CLASSPATH is set to .;C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0\common\lib\servlet.jar
    I can compile an applet starting:
    import java.awt.Color;
    import java.awt.BorderLayout;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    //Class Declaration
    class SwingUI extends JFrame implements ActionListener { ... }
    but trying to compile my servlet starting:
    import java.io.*;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    public class ExampServlet extends HttpServlet { ... }
    gives me the error (import javax.servlet.*) "package does not exist".
    Any pointers on this immediate problem? and is my book out of date?

    You downloaded the Java 2 SDK Standard Edition, but you need to also download the Enterprise Edition if you want to write programs that use enterprise features.

  • Javax.servlet  ERROR

    Hello I new in jsp!!!
    I'm compiling a basic jsp project for run on tomcat. The compiler send me and error message javax.servlet does not exist and it's because I only jave instaled the j2sdk. (I think)
    What the library that a must download from java to succelfully compil it.
    Thanks a lot and sorry for my english.
    Diego

    If you have Tomcat, then you have the javax.servlet library, and you just need to include it in your classpath at compile time.
    It will be in the [tomcat]/common/lib/ directory
    Basically if you have -
    Tomcat4, the jar you need servlet.jar
    Tomcat 5: you need servlet-api.jar and jsp-api.jar
    Check out this useful page on setting up Tomcat: http://www.coreservlets.com/Apache-Tomcat-Tutorial/ - specifically the bit on setting your classpath.
    Note this only applies to compiling your own servlets. JSPs are automatically compiled by Tomcat.

  • Java Servlet compile error

    I have written a little servlet program. When it is compiled, I get errors saying "javax.servlet does not exist".
    I have J2EE SDK 1.4 installed. Does the error mean the classpath is missing? Appreciate advise.

    Hi !
    I had same error yesterday. But later I was able to compile the servlet by setting CLASSPATH.
    Set CLASSPATH as follows if you have installed J2EE AppServer in c:\
    1. Locate j2ee.jar in the directory you installed J2EE AppServer which can be in:
    C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\j2ee.jar
    2. Go to My Computer properties
    3. Click on the Environmental variable button of Advanced tab
    4. If you already have CLASSPATH variable then click on Edit button else click on New to set the CLASSPATH as follows:
    CLASSPATH=C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\j2ee.jar
    I think this should work for you.
    Goodluck,

  • Error importing ""import javax.servlet.ServletContext;""

    Hello:
    I have a JSC update 2 application. My problem is this:
    In the file ViewHandlerImpl.java (only read) i have an error ipmorting javax.servlet.ServletContext, and i have another error in this lines:
    if (!(context.getExternalContext().getContext() instanceof ServletContext)) {
    if (PhaseId.INVOKE_APPLICATION.equals(phaseId) ||
    context.getRenderResponse() ||
    context.getResponseComplete()) {
    destroy(context);
    return;
    In the first line i have the error, this error says that:
    cannot find symbol
    Symbol: class ServletContext
    location: class com.sun.rave.web.ui.appbase.faces.ViewHandlerImpl
    The library exists in my project, any idea how to solution this problem?
    Thanks

    I'm guessing that you are using an IDE. The import line getting red means the class you are trying to import is not in the class path.
    So if you are using an IDE then normally there is a place to add external jar files to your project.If you can tell me which IDE you use I may be able to help(if im familiar with that IDE)
    the next thing is the name of the jar file. it's servlet-api.jar. you can get it from tomcathome/common/lib if you are using tomcat

    you are not setting the classpath but the path, and they should both be written in capitals, PATH and CLASSPATH.
    The classpath contains directories and jar files that contain the classes that need to be "visible" to your applications. The servlet classes are part of the file servlet-api.jar, which you can find in your tomcat directory, more specifically the common/lib sub directory.
    I would expect your classpath to look something like this:
    .;d:\program files\tomcat\common\lib\servlet-api.jar
    You may also want to add the directory in which you are storing your projects, I don't know how you are building your applications.
    You seem to be very new to this, so I would suggest you give this a read:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/index.html

  • Javax.servlet classes...  very quick to answer

    I have downloaded the javax classes, but I have no idea how to install them... when I try and compile code including
    import javax.servlet.*;
    I get the error package javax.servlet.http does not exist.
    I have installed tomcat 4.0.1, and I have set my JAVA_HOME env variable to /usr/java/jdk1.3.1_02 which is where I installed my java stuff. I compiled as such
    javac helloworld.java
    help? please :) I just want to get off hte ground.
    Oh yes I can also access my tomcat on port 8080, but I don't think that's involved cause it's compiling I am trying to do not run it yet.. that comes later :(
    Josh.

    After a break i noticed my stupidity... To stop people from needlessly answering this post, and to possibly help others who are as mentally challenged as myself, the answer to my question is that I had to set
    CLASSPATH=mydirwithjavax
    NOT
    PATH=mydirwithjavax
