Compiz on start up

I did a re-install because of other issues and for the life of me, I cannot get Compiz to start when I boot my machine.  I have to pull up the icon and then it starts.  I am using compiz with gtk-window-decorator instead of Emerald.
This is what my startup looks like:
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Compiz
Exec=/usr/bin/compiz ccp #Make sure ccp is included so that Compiz loads your previous settings.
NoDisplay=true
# name of loadable control center module
X-GNOME-WMSettingsModule=compiz
# autostart phase
##-> the folloing line cause gnome-session warning and slow startup, so try not to enable this
# X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=WindowManager
X-GNOME-Provides=windowmanager
# name we put on the WM spec check window
X-GNOME-WMName=Compiz
# back compat only
X-GnomeWMSettingsLibrary=compiz
Pretty much straight from the wiki.
But for some reason, it won't start on boot since I did a full reinstall.  None of the desktop effects work.  Rotating the cube, zoom, etc.    If I use the compiz icon, then it will work.
I'm completely stuck.

I have the same problem. Unable to start Compiz on start up. It works if I run fusion-icon after i've logged in.
I did:
$ gconftool-2 --set -t string /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager compiz
And now Compiz start but I have no borders on my windows. If I start with fusion-icon I have borders
What do I need to do?
Make sure that you have installed compiz-decorator-gtk
$ pacman -S compiz-decorator-gtk
Then go to fusion icon and set window decorator to gtk window decorator OR put the following text on terminal
$ gtk-window-decorator --replace
If you have problems let me know
Did that and still no Compiz on startup. When I start Compiz Fusion Icon I get the wrong theme. If I switch to Emerald then it looks ok. I want to use Emerald
I must be doing something wrong. But what?

  • Compiz not starting automatically?

    I'm using xfce. I did what the archwiki said add to the xml config file. But when I reboot, It still uses the defualt windows manager. It works with the fusion icon, but I don't want to use the fusion icon.

    I would try typing this in a terminal while running xfce first to see if it will work.  Try a shortened version.
    compiz --replace
    if you have problems I would try adding
    --indirect-rendering
    or
    --loose-binding

  • Compiz doesn't automatically start anymore after gnome 2.30 update

    My logs only show this "Apr  1 18:15:26 arch gnome-session[2435]: WARNING: Application 'compiz.desktop' failed to register before timeout" error. But i'm pretty sure it always showed that error even before i upgraded today.

    Is it starting for you when you use "compiz --replace &" in terminal? For me it is, but without emerald, so I don't have any window borders...
    EDIT: OMG, when I used Fusion-icon then it started normally... Weird...
    EDIT2: I've changed in /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop line where compiz is started from "compiz" to "/usr/bin/compiz ccp" and it's working now.

  • [SOLVED] Want to use gnome decorate in Compiz-Fusion

    Hello,
    I am a convert from Ubuntu. I have succesfully installed Compiz Fusion. However, I don't like the Emerald theme manager. I would like to use the gtk decorator instead. How is that possible ? I am currently running Compiz by start the Fusion-icon
    Thanks

    There is a package in the community repository that provides this functionality.  I think it's called compiz-decorator-gtk.
    And welcome to arch!

  • Compiz can't find manageable screens

    Running "compiz" or "compiz --replace" fails with the following error:
    compiz (core) - Error: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
    compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
    Fusion-icon says there is "No GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap with direct rendering context". I try with "LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" and still there are no screens found by compiz. Starting compiz from xinitrc also fails.
    The driver in use is the open source one, also, I have no xorg.conf. There is direct rendering.
    The solutions in the wiki for the GLX_EXT problem didn't help.
    Do you have any ideas how to get compiz running?
    (And a small question. If I have no xorg.conf, how do I select a different driver (fglrx)?)
    Thanks for reading.

    Make sure "fglrx" does not exist in your Modules line (or any other config file that you may have put it in: rc.conf, etc)

    Where exactly did you guys get compiz 0.8?
    Even with forcing my mirror to sync it shows:
    [kurt@arch ~]$ pacman -Ss compiz-core
    community/compiz-core 0.7.8-1 (compiz compiz-kde compiz-gtk compiz-fusion)
    Composite manager for Aiglx and Xgl
    So now when i go to do a pacman -Syu I get:
    [kurt@arch ~]$ sudo pacman -Syyu

    It also appears my mirror is synced up to date.  If I search for dssi which the website says is the newest package it shows the newest version:
    [kurt@arch ~]$ pacman -Ss dssi
    testing/dssi 1.0.0-1
    DSSI is an API for audio plugins, with particular application for software
    synthesis plugins with native user interfaces.
    Any ideas?

  • Problems with gconftool and compiz

    I'm trying to get compiz to start on boot per the wiki's instructions. Although when I run
    gconftool-2 --set -t string /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager compiz
    and it returns
    Error setting value: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)

    I'm still wondering why it happens now at this moment in time...
    PC does seem to be a bit odd & inconsistent, the few times I've tested with it, at least so far as we content filtering goes; and if I remember rightly, you're not the first to report previously ok settings suddenly preventing some or all internet until pc is switched off altogether.
    It may work when re-enabled

  • Cannot replace xfwm4 with compiz

    By following the wiki exactly, nothing happens when I change the configs to run compiz instead of xfwm4.  I have erased the default configs in my home directory and made the appropriate changes in /etc instead ... nothing.  What should I do to get compiz to start instead of xfwm4?

    By nothing happens you mean that xfwm4 still starts on bootup?

  • Composite windows manager window refresh problem

    Hello, I'm a very satisfied user of Arch Linux, and I would like to say it is la creme de la creme (the best) distribution for users that wish to control their system (and not vice versa).
    However, recently, I had some strange problems with compiz fusion, beryl, and even xcompmgr. I'm using xorg from testing, I do not have a xorg.conf, and I have a GMA 3100 IGP. Compiz fusion was working correctly, without xorg.conf, and after I did the upgrade to kernel 2.6.23 (the day the package was put online), compiz-fusion started to have quite weird problems. It is not kernel related, I compiled my own 2.6.23 kernel, then a 2.6.22.9, and it just did not work as expected.
    When I move windows, decoration and the window is just fine. However, the windows stop refreshing (I have to shade the window to refresh it), and when I scale it (not the compiz plugin), the decoration and the window just stretches, and then it refreshes sometimes. I was not able to do a decent video capture of my screen, but I hope the description gives you an idea of the problem. I tried with a xorg.conf, setting xaa acceleration, setting "XAANoOffscreenPixmap" xorg.conf option, adding my user into the video group using gpasswd, and I must admit, it changes nothing.

    Oh, I forgot to tell that compiz outputs no error messages.
    Also, I find it weird that xorg uses the i810 driver, as I only have the "intel" driver installed.

    hmm dell would only launch X using the intel drivers and I"m having the same problem with compiz fusion that you had.  My windows don't update themselves.  It's quite frustrating.

  • Conky won't stay below other windows...

    Hellu!
    I'm currently using conky with a conkyrc from my Ubuntu laptop which works quite well... Problem is, when Compiz is started, Conky suddently wants to stay on top of all other windows. Restarting conky fixes the problem, but I'd rather not restart conky everytime i login to the system... Anyone know how to fix this?
    Also. Is there a way to add conky to compiz' widget-layer and still have it below all other windows? Basically, I want it on the desktop unless i hit a key, which makes it come on top of everything.
    Heres my conky configuration:

  • Slow ¿GDM?

    Hi, again.
    I'm not sure when this started to happen but things are:
    1. Recently I moved from Catalyst to xf86-video-ati (really don't know whether it's related or not, or even previous to the problem but...).
    2. Boot up from GRUB to the login prompt in shell takes the same time as it did fresh installed ~20 seconds.
    3. After the login prompt i get a blak screen for 20 seconds, then login prompt in shell again, then black screen one more time and after 5 seconds GDM is there.
    4. GDM didn't take so long before.
    5. Nothing in /var/log makes me suspect anything but I don't know what I'm looking for so if you need one of them just ask, please.
    6. I have compiz-fusion started without fusion-icon, as said in the wiki.

    Thanks for your answer.
    I tried Slim and disabling compiz but nothing changed.
    The xorg was a little hard to make the first time and I cannot make it again, so i just changed some things, but I don't know whether it is still "odd".

    About Catalyst ... ufff... I would have to make a new Xorg and ... ufff... Radeonhd doesn't work for my card.
    And about another DE which one would be the less painful? I mean, last time I installed KDE just to see it I had lots of problems with file-program associations and to fix them is a pain in the ass...
    And now I see on boot up a message that says something like "/etc/rc.d/functions not found" ... o_O

    There seems to be an issue with Intel and Compiz. To launch Compiz you have to always enter the following command into a terminal (as stated in the arch wiki).
    LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace --sm-disable ccp &
    This works for me, however I have no idea how to make it so Compiz auto starts on login. Simply pasting this command into "sessions and startup" doesn't work.
    If anyone knows how to set Compiz to auto start with the above command on Xfce4 I would be grateful.

  • Fresh install laptop, going lightweight

    well, the linux installs have officially matched teh windows installs over here.  This is cool.
    i have a P4 laptop, mostly legacy components 256mb memory, 30gb hard drive.  I just installed the latest 686 iso.  im going to give gnome a try.  i just completed the arch install on ext4, the first thing i ran is pacman -Syu gnome.   is there anything else i should know about right off the bat, either concerning  the fact that its a laptop as far as sytem configuration (i will be looking over this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … filesystem and  , or any first suggestions about recommended DE components or anything that might make my experience ultra cool and blow away my KDE desktop box?

  • [SOLVED] Gnome + xf86-video-ati = Compiz-fusion can't start wo f-i

    I know this is not a new issue but... let's try again.
    The title is pretty much the situation. I reinstalled the whole system recently and installed Catalyst which worked good except for a delay on maximizing/resizing windows. Yesterday I saw the new about Catalyst going to AUR and all that stuff so I decided to switch to open source drivers. They work pretty good but the wiki-way to start compiz without fusion-icon which used to work with catalyst does not work anymore.

    In your compiz.desktop instead of:
    Exec=compiz ccp
    It should be:
    Exec=compiz --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp --indirect-rendering
    Edit:
    If you still have problems after that you need to export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1, which is what fusion-icon is doing.
