Compositing - Channel Mixer Help

I've been using AE now for a few years, (since v5.5) and mostly use it for motion graphics. Using CS3 now. But right now, I'm beginning to work through Steve Wright's book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Compositing-Film-Video-Second/dp/024080760X">Digital Compositing for Film and Video</a> to focus more on true compositing.
The author's aim is to keep the lessons application-independent and present concepts in a way that would be applicable to most software packages. (However, considering the author's frequent references to "nodes" and his well-known status as a Shake user & <a href="http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=408">Shake instructor</a>, it's apparent that using Shake, while reading this book, would lead to the least bumps in the road, when attempting to follow along.)
But I'm not using Shake, I'm using AE and have encountered a small bump in the road. Regarding luma keys he mentions how luma values are represented in the individual colors R,G,B. To cut to the chase, he says, "One standard equation that mixes the right proportions of RGB values to create a luminance image on a color monitor is:
Luminance = 0.30R + 0.59G + 0.11B"
Great. But I can't figure exactly how to mix the RGB values with the above proportions in AE. It's quite easy & straight-forward in Photoshop, using the Channel Mixer. <a href="http://www.geocities.com/kevincbrock/channel_mixer.png">Example here</a>. But AE's Channel Mixer does not seem to work quite the same way as it's counterpart in PS. There are values there, for instance, "Red-Red", but they seem to run in values from -200 to 200, not percentages, like PS. So my question is, how do I achieve the same channel mixing results in AE that I can in PS?
I'll add this: I was able to achieve the desired result in AE, but by using a round-a-bout sort of tactic. Instead of using the "Channel Mixer", I applied the "Set Channels" effect to my sample shot. By changing the "Set Red to Source 1's LUMINANCE", then doing the same for Green and Blue, setting them all to LUMINANCE, the resulting image is identical to the sample shot that was tweaked in Photoshop. Again, it worked, but I'd like to know how to change the proportions of RGB to other values than those represented in the formula above.
Hope this all makes sense.
Oh, and while I'm here.....I'll throw this in: In AE, when you apply the "Curves" effect, can you input precise values for input / output. Again, this is simple in Photoshop, but unless I don't have some display items turned on in the Curves editor in AE, I don't see a way to enter precise values. Is this possible?

You could use expressions... You create sliders for each input, then feed their output to the actual effects. Something like
//----begin expression
linear(value,0,100,-200,200)
//----end expression
should do in most cases. Still, be careful. Not everything written in that book directly applies to AE. It does not figure in any specifics of color management nor different Gammas which could massively skew results because the source footage will already be pre-adjusted and the comp will add another level of adjustments.

Nope. AE's Curve effect will adapt to the project bit depth as a lot of other effects, presenting you with the problem of which values to actually use. This would only make sense if the effect itself would be independent from AE and process in float all the time and only the inputs were presented as different normalized ranges. There was/ should have been an alternative Curves effect from Frischluft, but at this point development has reached a dead stop, so it's doubtful it will ever be unleashed upon the world.

  • CMYK slider in the RGB Channel Mixer

    When I'm doing RGB retouch I'm often converting the image to CMYK just to use the Channel Mixer in that mode. I can never seem to get the hang of channel mixer in RGB to the same result, I guess I just understand CMYK plates better.
    Is there any way of seeing the CMYK slider in RGB mode?

    As the Channel Mixer seems to operate on the RGB or CMYK Channels that make up the composite I doubt there is.
    I would highly discourage repeatedly switching Color Modes while image editing.
    When we switched to RGB editing (yes, I too did prefer editing images in CMYK back when) it helped me to split Curves Adjustments into two Layers – one set to Color and one to Luminance.
    But basically R corresponds to Y, G to M, B to C.
    Do you at least work in 16bit? 

  • CS6 channel mixer misbehaving!

    Can someone help with my problem please? I export a photo to CS6 and use channel mixer to swap the red and blue channel values i.e red from 100 to 0 and blue from 0 to 100
    which should give me a blue background for infrared photos then for further PP but it is giving me a green background instead and nothing has changed it has just decided it wants to act strangely
    I do have malware on my macbook pro retina so Im wondering if this has something to do with it? Would be great full if someone has any clues?

    With the channel mixer to swap the Red and Green channels:
    1. Select Red for the Output Channel
        Change the Red to Zero (0) and the Blue to 100
    2. Select Blue for the Output Channel
        Change the Red to 100 and the Blue to Zero(0)
    You could also save the settings as a preset so you don't have to adjust the sliders everytime

  • How to become Channel Mixer

    Hi everybody
    I Have Photoshop Elements 5 and I would like to upgrade it to a later version. Now I need to know if PSE 8 would have Channelmixer, which I need for my work. If not, can I upgrade to a Adobe Version with Channel Mixer ? And how can I do this ?

    Can you point me to where the $299 upgrade to CS5 from PSE8 offer is located?   When I
    go to the Adobe store and specify an upgrade from PSE8 to CS5, the price is $599.  $199 for CSx to CS5,
    but that does not help me.   Did this promotion end, or am I missing something?  Do you happen to know how long the offer will be on the table?

    I am new to this and for my photography assignment it says I need to edit image using Channel mixer which elements 13 doesn't have.
    I am bewildered....
    Im trying to work out how and what I need to download (found info that there is free download CS5?) but can't work out where the actual button is to say download now!
    can anyone help me?

    Your best bet is to purchase Elements + for $12. It is version specific and has Channel mixer.and a lot more.

  • Transpose PS Channel mixer values to LR

    I use presets of channel mixer for converting images to gray. The presets I have are based on RGB Values. How can I transpose that to the 8 channels on LR ?
    In addition to transposing from 3 to 8 channels, I see that moving 3 channels to 0% make a black photo. When all sliders on LR are moved to -100%, the gray shades of original photo are not modified.

    You should try it and see the effect I am describing for yourself. Noise reduction is not helpful. When channel mixing is done correctly there is no need for noise reduction. The high-res sliders in Lightroom and ACR, though, do not do channel mixing. They operate on specific hues and can't be used as an equivalent to channel mixing no matter how you move them around.

  • Add Channel Mixer functionality to LR

    Something I often do is shoot IR with my Sigma SD-14 by removing the hot mirror/"dust cover." The resulting images are pink-magenta-yellow.
    Doing a monochrome conversion in LR really doesn't work, whether auto or something else. Grainy, noisy, looks like crap.
    What works great is using the PS channel mixer with the "red filter" preset. PERFECT and OUTSTANDING dynamic range, optimally low grain.
    Because the high-precision color sliders in LR don't work like anything at all like the channel mixer, it's not possible to get the equivalent out of LR. You can't just drop out blue and green by sliding them all the way to the left - you get noisy mush.
    I would love, love, love to have the channel mixer.

    For my class ( I have a student assistant position) we bought the new CS4 book, (Studio Techniques) and it doesn't come with a CD, which means no pictures or files. We are having trouble with exercises for the class and  was wondering if anyone had found a good book out there, that comes with a CD?
    _We are also looking for a Channel Mixer Tutorial, something with real world application that will help the students get the most out of the channel mixer.... any ideas?

  • How to change Image color like Channel mixer

    I have this problem can anyone help me:
    I want to change Channel mixer color,
    for example, change original Image color to B&W.
    My code:

    But not working in scripting, seems a mistake.

    They would show new color as I wantted,
    I forgot ' When monochrome = true, the maximum number of channel value specifications is 1. '

  • CS5: Magic Wand fails intermittently; cannot use Channel Mixer on selection

    Hello,
    Using CS5 / Photoshop on Mac OS 10.6.4. 4GB RAM.
    The Magic Wand tool fails intermittently.  Quitting PS and rebooting seems to re-enable use of the Magic Wand.
    However, even when the Magic Wand tool does "work", for some reason I can no longer use any of the items in Image -> Adjustments, such as the Channel Mixer.  This functionality was working just 20 minutes ago, and now even with multiple reboots I cannot seem to get it working again.
    Googling came up with no relevant articles on this errant behavior.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Compositing, Stitching, Mixing?

    Hello
    Wondering if FMS/Encoder could handle the following scenario in a relatively 'out of the box' way:
    Given:
    - Source video media on the server/web storage, either as solid assets or pre-fragmented into defined 'clip' segments
    - Source 'overlay' media on the server/web storage, as video-with-alpha assets
    - Source audio media on the server/web storage
    Given a '3 layer' playlist where the desired outcome is to:
    - Stitch together the selected clips (regions from within the source video media) from various sources into a single, solid video asset.
    - Composite the 'overlay' media using normal alpha compositing into that asset at variable times (defined by the user).
    - Mix the audio media into the solid asset (mixing with any audio contained in the original source clips).
    Producing a cached, solid video asset that can be viewed/transcoded/retrieved from the server.
    I don't see anything about compositing videos or mixing an audio into a stream. The desired output format would be high quality (as a source for later transcoding, so ... as close to HD as possible). Realtime compositing/rendering is not a requirement.
    The following scenarios come to mind:
    1)
    Write our own DirectShow device that provides the pre-composited input as frames to Flash Video Encoder. That is, assuming the encoder/server does not provide a vehicle for compositing/mixing.
    2)
    We see that there is a way to use 'DVR' like/on-demand functions of the streaming server to stitch. That solves part of our problem (stitching together clip fragments from multiple origin source videos). But it doesn't solve the problem of compositing video frames on top of them, or mixing different audio with them.
    3)
    Is there any way to use SSAS to essentially replicate the behavior of our 'client side' player, which actually does all this compositing in realtime (it composites the 2 layers into a single bitmap data, and we could technically have it mix the various audio channels into a single byte array of the stereo audio output per frame if we needed to)? IE can we write our own 'provider' for encoding that would render frame data purely within ActionScript then provide it as the equivalent to a 'camera object' or whatever the encoder needs to do its thing?...
    From a high level POV what we are trying to do is develop a rendering solution for a realtime UGC video toolset that we've developed on the Flash client platform. Our current solution requires a custom player (that 'performs' all the user's edits/choices in realtime) and we are trying to eliminate that in favor of a flattened media asset that can be pushed to any CDN (or streamed from our own service).

    Well from what I can see Flash (Interactive) Media Server has a fair bit more capability than conventional serving ... Not that I see anything dealing with compositing or mixing data beyond maybe hacking the live encoder by feeding it our own input.  We've found a way to do what was described using a mix of other stuff (ffmpeg, image magic, sox) but it seemed worth it to explore FMS to see if it could be leveraged.  This is for a rendering situation. Realtime availability of a render would be nice but unexpected. The client player can still perform the mixes in realtime (so within the normal player and environment the user sees no delay between saving and publishing)... this is just a way to syndicate the result, allow it to be downloaded, and offer it up for devices that don't support Flash.  Thx N

  • Is there something like Photoshop Channel Mixer in Adobe Illustrator?

    What is nice in Photoshop is being able to take fully illustrated art such as a red ball with shading and highlights, go into Channel Mixer, slide a couple of adjustment bars and it's changed to a blue ball or purple ball.
    Does Illustrator have a tool that does something similar to that? I'm having trouble figuring out the color editor and it seems require that I punch in different color percentages for each color it finds within the artwork that I have selected.
    I might as well click on each individual shape within the piece of art and change it's color that way.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Illustrator does not support channels. I do not presently have Phantasm loaded but it might be possible it has a channel mixer and Phantasm is a plug in for Illustrator. Check it out.

  • Curves or Channel Mixer - which is better?

    Which do you think is better for colour correcting/adjustment (especially CMYK images)

    When you add up the ink percentages of your four ink colors - Cyan+Magenta+Yellow+Black, you'll get your total ink density, which is what I'm sure Alan is referring to. Set one side of your Info Palette to read Total Ink, and then you'll easily be able to monitor that. If you have too much ink density, magazines are very likely to kick your file back, asking you to fix it, making you miss your deadline. If you have too little ink density, your blacks may look weak.
    Alan is correct, Curves, Hue/Saturation, and Selective Colors are the first choice tools for CMYK color correction and Channel Mixer is usually for making huge fixes which will usually require Curves to bring back into line anyway.

    Hi Guys,
    I miss a graphic channel mixer so that I can reduce channel separation in
    problem zones, primarily the bass range when handling vinyl and shellack,
    but there may also be benefits for similar processing in the treble range.
