Compress directory and proxy logs

Hi,
Did somebody find an easy way to compress the proxy and directory logs in Sun Dir 6.3? It would be nice if it comes with something built in, but as it's not the case I was thinking on doing some scripts to compress the old logs and then also do the clean-up as they will be renamed. My doubts is if that could affect the log management process build-in in the application. Any suggestion of how you are managing the logs is welcome.
Thanks,
Federico

You could also use logrotate or rotatelog scripts (PERL iirc) to set up aging and removal parameters.
We have also used some in-house scripts for dump-archive management. Some scripts create "dumps" of software data (DB exports, etc.), these "dumps" fill up a directory (preferably a separate filesystem), and one script maintains a given amount of free space in the filesystem by deleting oldest dumps.
I guess this could be easily done with log files as well.
Now, if you're using Solaris 10 and ZFS, making a compressed ZFS filesystem specifically for logs is rather simple. We usually do that during post-set-up routines by:
* shutting down the server,
* creating a ZFS FS dataset,
* setting compression=on, (gzip-9 if recent OpenSolaris Nevada),
* moving the log files if any to this FS,
* setting the owner/access rights as of the previous "real" log directory,
* changing the mountpoint,
* and starting the server back.
Works well with a ZFS FS in a local ZFS dataset delegated to a Solaris zone, as well.
One noted drawback is some more manual labor for deinstallation of LDAP packages (pkgrm expects directories to be deletable) and migration of a zone.
So if you go this way, document the changes properly :)

  • Moved Home Directory and Cannot Log In

Seeking a little advice due to my being a little silly.
Moved my Home Directory over to my Opti-Bay Drive, changed the path in Accounts etc and then restarted. When trying to log back in to my system I get the following message:
You are unable to log in to the user account "XXXX" at this time.
Why Silly? Just before I moved my Home Directory over I had formatted the new drive as Encrypted. Am guessing that this is stopping me from logging in?
So how can I go about resolving this issue?
Many thanks in advance for any help!

    Managed to resolve the issue.
Ripped the drive with my Home Directory out of my MBP and connected it to another MBP as an external USB drive. Copied off my Directory and then formatted said drive as just Journaled. Installed back in to main MBP and all works

  • How open and see Log File in Active Directory

    Hello Friends..   ^-^
how i can open log files active directory and see this data files ?
    Can export this logs ?
    thanks for help.

And adds a definition of edbxxxxx.log for completeness:
These are auxiliary transaction logs used to store changes if the main Edb.log file
gets full before it can be flushed toNtds.dit.
The xxxxx stands for a sequential number in hex. When the Edb.log file
    fills up, an Edbtemp.log file
is opened. The original Edb.log file
is renamed to Edb00001.log, and Edbtemp.log is
    renamed to Edb.log file,
and the process starts over again. Excess log files are deleted after they have been committed. You may see more than one Edbxxxxx.log file
if a busy domain controller has many updates pending.

  • Appropriate directory for themes, logs and config files

Hello, I would like to know what would be the appropriate directory to place a application's config directory that contains themes, logs and config files for that application.
I want that directory to be accessible but since ~/Library is now invisible on Lion, that kinda rules it out for accessibility. The only place left now would be ~/Applications, but I don't think it was intended for that.
There is also an invisible config file that contains the path to the config directory and that's what the app uses to know where the config directory is located. The current emplacement of that config file is in the home directory, which I think is not in accordance to Apple's guidelines. So where should I place that file?
    What should I do?
    Thanks

Thanks for the additional info about the Home and Documents directory, that clears a lot of things up. I needed to know that too. Do you know where that documents is located now? http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPFileSy stem/Articles/WhereToPutFiles.html
Apple prefers you use the system API for these things. Here is one document that explains it.
So even though I won't use NSDefaults because what I am working on is a cross Platform app that is in C, I will put the config file in ~/Library/Preferences and the config folder in ~/Library/Application Support.
Almost everything has a C equivalent. You can use CFPreferences instead. I strongly urge you to use one of the system APIs instead of trying to write your own files. For one thing, the user can put their home directory virtually anywhere they want. For another, Lion is rewriting the underlying architecture with the new screen sharing and iCloud. If you use the system APIs, your program will work properly with any new technologies or custom network settings.

    Thx

    Hi Davide,
You seem to be missing the path on the FTP server; which goes on the export command.
Disable transaction logs, then remove the export command and then add it again like this: transaction-logs export ftp-server 10.253.8.125 cache **** / ; after that enable transaction logs again and test it.
Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

  • Creative Cloud and Proxy Support

    To whom it may concern,
I am a Technical Specialist for an Enterprise. We use Astaro (now Sophos) as a our proxy appliance. We use Active Directory based authentication to provide internet access to our clients.
I am currently in the process of building a SOE for our Mac workstations. It is based on Mac OS X 10.8.4 and uses deploy studio to install. We have used the Creative Cloud packager to build an installer that contains all the packages for the Creative Cloud suite. The whole suite is installed but I need to be able to connect to the activation servers via the proxy to finalise the installation after deploying the SOE.
When I run the Creative Cloud installer, I am prompted for credentials even though the credentials are stored in the user keychain. When I monitor the proxy activity log, I cannot see these credentials being passed to the proxy. I can see requests being generated but the user is "" or null.
What authentication methods are supported by the Creative Cloud application in regards to proxies? Are there any logs available to narrow down the problem?
The other thing I have noticed, is the Creative Cloud is not honouring the sites in the proxy bypass list. For example if I have 192.150.3.51 in the proxy bypass list under 'System Preferences', 'Network', 'Advanced', 'Proxies', and I try to login into Creative Cloud, I still have requests to this IP address in the proxy log.
Is there a seperate config file for the proxy settings for Creative Cloud?
I also want to pass on that this has cost me (and my company) so far about 4 business days of time so far to diagnose and troubleshoot. We never had these issues with are previous Adobe Volume Licencing agreement and the CS6 product family. Our support techs have admitted that they breach company policy everytime a new mac is deployed just to be able to get CC installed by bypassing our security measures and connecting the mac directly to the internet as they have found that the only reliable method of being able to complete the installation procedure.
This is not an acceptable solution - moving to a redeployable SOE will only make this problem worse as our macs will periodically get re-imaged meaning that we will have to reactivate Creative Cloud again for our users to again have access to their tools and perform their tasks.
I do not believe that our infrastructure is very different to any other Enterprise out there (eg Internet access only via authenticated user) so I am not sure why this was not suppported out of the box.
I would appreciate any help you can provide.
    Thanks
    Michael

Thanks,Yes it is safe to delete them.
How ever i would suggest you to zip them with some date conventions like from10dec12_to_13mar13 and save it for later reference and delete the originals
As it is text the compression ratio will be high. It will make it much smaller.

Since you have multiple Oracle homes, you are probably looking at the wrong tnsnames.ora. The reason why SQL*Plus is working is because it is being picked up from an Oracle Home where the correct tnsnames.ora resides. Here is a quick way to confirm this
    - Stop the Apache Listener service
    - Open a "Console prompt window"
    - Go to $IAS_HOME/Apache/Apache
    - Set TNS_ADMIN=Directory_with_correct_tnsnames.ora
    - Issue "tnsping your_dbalias_name" to verify that you can ping the database. If this does not work, then your tnsnames.ora is incorrect
    - If it works, startup Apache by issuing "start Apache -k start"
    - Try connecting to Portal thru your browser
    - This should work.

  • Transaction log and access log

The transaction log (TransactionLogFilePrefix) and the access log are stored
relative to the directory where the server is started rather than where it
resides as with the rest of the log files. Why is this?
    Eg.
I start the server with a batch file contained in
    projects\bat
    My server is in
    projects\server\config\myDomain
When I start the server the access and transaction logs end up in
    projects\bat
while all the rest of the log files (such as the domain and server log) end
    up in
    projects\server
My batch file that starts the server looks like this
    "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java" -hotspot -ms64m -mx64m -classpath %CLASSPATH%
    "-Dbea.home=e:\bea"
    "-Djava.security.policy==i:\projects\server\config\myDomain\weblogic.policy"
    "-Dweblogic.Domain=myDomain" "-Dweblogic.Name=adminServer"
    "-Dweblogic.RootDirectory=i:/projects/server"
    "-Dweblogic.management.password=weblogic" weblogic.Server
    Thanks for help on this,
    Myles

The same case with me, I sent email to apple support, but got not reply.
The apple status page indicated that every thing is fine now, what a joke.
Many devs are in this situation too, I guess we could do nothing but waiting for their system to come up.

  • Active Directory and many OUs

    Hello all,
This topic might have been talked about before but after a lot of searching I still have not found a solution, so I ask for a bit of help.
In our Active Directory there are many OUs where users are kept. There is no one top OU where you can start your search. I don't really know why it was set up this way and I don't have an option to change that. I would really like to have ou=users like most have!
So when I try to authenticate a user (I'm installing DSpace in my uni) I cannot automatically add the OU for the user trying to log in and the users themselves don't know their OU (well, why would they!).
I'm hoping there is some simple solution to this. Maybe JNDI API allows for searching in many OUs at the same time (some fixed list in the code)? Or maybe the OU is not needed at all in the search?
    Any help/hints would be appreciated.
    best regards, Logi

For searching, you can issue a subtree search will search through the entire subtree, irrespective of how many levels of OU's may exist, by using SearchControls.SUBTREE_SCOPE
Have a look at the tutorial at http://java.sun.com/products/jndi/tutorial/basics/directory/scope.html
For authentication, you can either get the user to enter their:
    distinguished name
(cn=Albert Eirnstein, ou=Research,dc=Antipodes,dc=com), although that is not entirely user friendly
their NT style logon name (samAccountName)
    ANTIPODES\alberte, more user friendly,
or their Windows 200 style logon name (userPrincipalName),
[email protected], equally as user friendly.

  • Open directory and Active directory

    Hello everyone.
I am from a school in london. We currently have 8 servers (7 running Server 2003 and a recently installed Mac server running os x server 10.5)
We have recently installed new macs into our media room and need them to be set up to work with the current domain setup.
what we wish to do is to run the media centers computers through the Mac server but get the existing domain information from the Active directory server running windows. As i have not set up a mac server before I am having certain difficulties doing this. The first time we set up the active directory on the mac server we could log into the mac computers but could not change any of the policies to different groups to allow or deny certain applications from running. Everytime i go to save a policy for a certain group we get the error message
"Error while saving record "Finchley\Level 1@ Error -14140
Im guessing this is because we are trying to save that to the active directory and not onto the mac server so how can we Map the active directory to the Macs open directory so that we can customize the mac group policies?
Sorry if that didnt make alot of sense im typing abit fast
    Thanks

    Have you been here?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DirectoryAccess/1.8/en/c7od45.html
It should be straight forward, depending on how your AD accounts are setup.
Unfortunately, I currently see a bug in the system which is often causing the home directory share to fail to mount when I use the AD plug-in in its default configuration. I'm pleading with Apple to fix this soon.
If you use the plug-in in "true network home" fashion, by unchecking the 'force local home' option, then you should avoid this annoying bug. This method however requires plenty of network bandwidth and space for your entire Mac home folder.
