Compress setting

After been using Canon XM 2 (GL2) for many years I finally stepped up to HD with JVC GY-HM100 E, I shoot in QuickTime format. I drag the clips to the timeline and FCP changes setting automatically to HDTV 720p (16:9) and compressor XDCAM EX 720p (35 Mbs/s VBR) My Question is: Is this the best compressor settings or have I other options ? My final output for now is the desktop. I am totally new to HD editing and have a lot to learn.

It really depends on the content. The more motion, the more fast cuts, the more complex your backgrounds, the more bits you need to throw at the compression. I find 6.2 Mbps to be a good general rate, but your experience may vary.
My gut feeling is that 9 hours would be better off on 3 dual-layer disks, unless the vast majority of your video is talking heads.
Best of luck with your project.

  • Sequence compression setting / Quicktime Export

Is there any advantage to changing the sequence compression setting to "None" and re-rendering before exporting a sequence using DVCAM footage captured from a DSR30 via FireWire? My normal compression setting is DV/DVCPRO.
How about leaving the sequence settings at DV/DVCPRO and changing the Quicktime export setting from "current settings" to "uncompressed 10 bit" or 8 bit?
I'm still getting artifacting when compressing to MPEG2, even with compression markers at transitions and encoding at 2-pass VBR and burning the DVD at 1x.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I decided to check out the Compressor discussion group - full of near suicides like me bemoaning the gross infusion of MPEG2 artifacting after upgrading to Compressor 2.
Appparently, popular opinion says the VBR feature is faulty and Apple is waiting until mutiny ensues before addressing the problem.
So I have encoded at 1-pass, 7.2 bitrate, best motion estimator, segmenting OFF, using Compressor, as suggested by some kind soul in the group, and then importing into DVDSP.
I then burned the DVD and viewed it on my bigass TV.
NO ARTIFACTING! Plus compressor took SIX minutes to MPEG2 the 40-minute FCP movie. And, yes you can see in the Compressor preview window that FCP has inserted compression markers at all edit points.
So by selecting settings for what Apple terms lower quality output, I get higher quality output in a fraction of the compression time!
I am fearful Apple is hiring enemy combatant programmers, lowering the morale of editors worldwide by making their work look like poo.

  • N95 8GB No JPG Compression Setting!!!

It is a shame that this phone has no JPEG compression setting. It has a Carl Zeiss lens with 5M pixels, but it doesn't really matter. Because, the compression setting is so high. Usually, a 5M pixel jpeg is about 1.5 - 2.0 Mbytes. However, this phone compress the pics down to 700 kbytes!!!! The images result in grainy and blocky as hell. NOKIA please update the firmware and add a setting for the compression. If you google, many of the N95 users are complaining about this issue. Even please let us to store images in raw format. The Carl Zeiss lens becomes useless at this point.

It depends on the firmware version and on the type of image you've just shot. Some of the photos I took with my N95 were 1.6 to 2 MB in size, regularly around 1.0 to 1.2 MB and rarely below 800 KB.

  • Will the right Compression setting helps reduce Image NOISE?

    Hi,
I'm wondering...why some Consumer Cams even an older version will not given the Image Noise Issue though in the low light condition while watching on Youtube?! Is the right Conversion/Compression setting do helps?
    Need your opinion!!! Thanks ...

I'm not at all certain of what you are asking but ...
Some cameras have better low light performance than others. There is nothing you can do in compressor that will alter that fact.
If you have a very grainy/noisy video because the video gain has been bumped way up, there are some plugins that will help reduce it. Do a search on this forum - this has been discussed regularly.
    Good luck,

  • Compression Setting Question - Full Quality

    Hi,
I am putting together various video sources for a performance (some created in FCP others in iMovie). The show will use a PowerBook and project the movies on a big screen.
My question is: when I put it all together, what is the best setting I can use to compress the file to be most effective for projecting the footage on an overhead? iMovie has the full quality DV setting, and FCP has the export to quicktime option ... does it make sense to leave it at what they create, or should I use compressor for more efficiency?
    Thanks,
    Damon

It will be playing out of the DVI port, I believe, although I suppose the S-Video feed is an option.
What is AIC ? I have not heard of this ...
    Thanks,

  • What compression setting s'ld i use for my Final Master?

    Hi,
Let say,i've done all my editing thru FCP and i wish to Export my Final Master Clip...what's the Best setting for the compression?
For DVD Purpose and 1 for Web purpose!
    Thanks!

Can't you just export straight to Compressor?
Sure you can, but it ties up FCP for the duration.
I don't understand why the Self Contained QT first?
Makes an independent "Master" which does not rely on the continued presence of the source footage.

  • Best compression setting for SD video on iWeb 09 for instant start

I've posted a website that has video clips on it and the video's play fine, but take about 2 to 3 minutes to load. No one wants to wait that long to watch a video. 3 of the video's are 2 minutes long and the 4th video is 7 minutes long. Is there a different setting in compressor that will keep decent video quality and allow the video to start playing as soon as possible. The current size is only half size and it still is taking a while to load. Thanks for your help.

  • Do u know compressing setting for authoring HD DVD?

    that's not disable to play.T-T
well, I make some movie from FCP (HDV format by Sony HC-1)
    then compressing M2v&h.264..
then Authoring from DSP. I made HD DVDformat from preference.
    then it's success.^^
    But.
the DVD is disable to play (even menu title) in another MAC.
I guess the reason that cause in compressing settings.
    Help me.

HD DVDs will only work on G5 Macs and H.264 requires QuickTime 7 for playback. Specifically Apple says the following:
"Playback of DVD Studio Pro 4-authored HD DVDs requires a G5 processor, Mac OS X v10.4 and Apple DVD Player 4.6 or later"
Also, DVD SP's HD DVDs will not work on PCs or standalone (set-top) DVD players.<small><hr width="75%"><small>If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. • Compression setting for videos

    HI,
I have 15 HD movies to put into my iBook.
Do you know the .mp4 compression settings to optimize my video for iBooks Author?
What's the best best to compress these down for full screen viewing?
    Many thanks,
    Elaine

720 wide looks good on screen. I'd experiment with the bitrate so you get small file size without unacceptable picture degradation. You'll have to experiment, I'm afraid, because the amount of compression you can apply without too much loss of quality depends very much on what's in each video.

  • Ideal QT compression setting for use on website

  • Best compression setting 90min movie on Dual Layer DVD

Okay, I admit, I am a total n00b at this...so sorry if you have to break things down into the most basic terms...
I am trying to get the BEST quality I can for my adobe Encore project (for ease of calculation, 90min movie and added features).  I was previously getting "exceeds dvd capacity" error in Encore.
I have decided to recompress and see what I can do to make it all fit, but first I want to re-evaluate my whole process...
the ultimate issue comes down to three things (i think)...
    1. CBR v VBR??  what is better and why?
    2. What Data Bit Rate to compress at and why?
    3. Single layer DVD vs Dual Layer DVD?  Which is better and why?
to begin the discussion, I'll tell you what I "know" and what I think.
It seems DVD players can only handle a max bit rate of 8mbps so I don't want to go over that and using a Dual layer disc I risk that it may not work on older players....also, the dual layer costs twice as much to duplicate (this sucks but money is not an issue at this point, quality is more important).  From what I have read, constant Bit Rate @ 8mbps will give me the Best possible image... 8 is the max and so to encode at 8 the entire time should be the best..  will i have any issues with this?  This is not an amateur home movie but rather an indie feature film so I want to get the best possible viewable product out to people.  I will have blu-ray questions to come later (thats what we are going to send to festivals).
any help would be greatly appreciated
    thanks so much...
    chris

    Okay, thanks for everyone's thoughts.
    Question....
I totally understand not wanting to waste space on a dvd IF there was extra room.... HOWEVER, a movie at 90min with menus, etc. BARELY fits on a dvd at a 6.8mbps VBR compression rate....
therefore....why not just fork out the extra couple bucks and just compress the whole thing at 8.0mbps 2pass CBR, slap it on a dual layer and even though there will be parts of the movie that will be higher than necessary, and there will be leftover space on the dual layer dvd.... you will be guaranteed to have the highest quality right?  heavy motion areas and more static areas will all be encoded at 8 and thus, the best....
am i wrong in thinking this?
and after some extensive reading and research....Although is says a dvd player can handle 9.8mbps..... it doesnt' seem safe to encode that high because a lot of players can't handle it.... what is everyone else's thoughts?
    I found this:
    Data rate
DVD-Video discs have a raw bitrate of 11.08 Mbit/s, with a 1.0 Mbit/s overhead, leaving a payload bitrate of 10.08 Mbit/s. Of this, up to 3.36 Mbit/s can be used for subtitles and a maximum of 9.80 Mbit/s can be split amongst audio and video. In the case of multiple angles the data is stored interleaved, and so there's a bitrate penalty leading to a max bitrate of 8 Mbit/s per angle to compensate for additional seek time. This limit is not cumulative, so each additional angle can still have up to 8 Mbit/s of bitrate available.
Professionally encoded videos average a bitrate of 4-5 Mbit/s with a maximum of 7–8 Mbit/s in high-action scenes. This is typically done to allow greater compatibility amongst players, and to help prevent buffer underruns in the case of dirty or scratched discs.

  • What's the best compression setting for exporting video to DVD?

My QT self contained file from FCP is 13 GB (1:02 min long) when I use DV NTSC while exporting. When iDVD finished encoding it, it went down to 3.4 GB (that includes video files in my iDVD menus).
*Since the DVD media is 4.7 GB can I make better quality DVD by lessening compression while exporting from FCP?*
I don't think there is a way to tweak compression in iDVD. And my second question:
*Is "self contained" file better quality than just a reference file?*
*I would like to make the best possible quality DVD and am looking for some tips on what settings would help me achieve it.*

    Hi Joby,
    Compressor is what you need.
Import your file, choose DVD best quality 90 minutes from the settings tab (lower left window in Compressor). This will allow your movie to be converted as MPEG 2 and ac3 dolby stereo (best compression for DVD audio).
The inspector window (lower right window) will allow you to decide/arrange settings as you like.
If you are not sure about best bit rate choice use the [Bit Budget|http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/bitbudget.html]
As you can see the inspector window offers a range of customizable settings if you are not familiar with those the manual (main menu>help>user manual) will answer all your questions. Simply type a word or definition in the search area and most likely the manual will provide the info you seek.
Self contained means that you create a file with exact copies from your original frames and edit on the timeline, a self-contained file becomes independent from your timeline. A reference movie as the definition says totally refers to your FCP project and wouldn't work on a different machine without referenced media files.
There is no difference in quality between the two QTmovie options.
    Hope that helps

  • Need to best working compression setting vs space.

    Hi all,
I am working with some uncompressed video clips they come in at 25 gb a clip. These are profesional animation clips I am looking to save some disk space and still get near the same quality. I am editing the clips for mobile use so i need to start with a high quality master. any suggestions for what settings i should use with media manager. I need to preserve the high quaity of the uncompressed animated clips but cut the size down to something i can store and reuse.
    Thanks

Try PhotoJPEG at 75%. Decklink calls that OnlineJPEG - it has the same band width requirements as DV, but is very close to uncompressed. Higher than 75% and you get diminishing returns.
    Try it, you'll like it.

  • Compression setting for Quicktime to Keynote

I created several quicktime movies in lossless format. I need to be able to play them in Iwork Keynote program. The lossless is way to big. What format should I choose when rendering out the quicktime movies to keep them at a good resolution for projection but small enough to be handled well in Keynote?

Is that how large your monitor/projector is?
That is the size it will be projected.
Another thing you can try is rendering at half that
size and scaling up. For some older codecs, that
still gave acceptable results, maybe it'll do the
    same for Keynote.
We are trying to avoid scaling up because of quality issures.
Also, make sure that you have the "Let others use the
screen" parameter turned off. This adversely affects
    any onscreen movement.
    Where is that parameter found?
Thirdly, does the computer have Front Row installed
    on it?
No...not sure why that would have anything to do with how keynote is playing back a quicktime movie.

  • Facebook and Youtube Video Setting Compression and Tools?

    Hi Folks,
I'd like to start putting our Live band videos up on Facebook and YouTube, and I was wondering what the latest trends are in that direction.
I have the freebies MPEG Streamclip, ffmpegX, as well as some of the the older Macintosh products Final Cut Express HD 3.0, and iMovie 6.0.3, and also the Latest QuickTime Pro 7.6.4..
I know that there is a lot of information out there as well as misinformation, (or old information) and I was just wondering what the best ways to get the best compression setting, the best sounding audio and looking video up to these sites.
    Thank You For Your Time,

in case, your source is HDef, I prefer a 1280x720/30fps/h264/max. 6MBit/sec conversion.. (=you can set FC/e or iMovie in the Export with Quicktime/Options) YT cares for approbiate download (=smaller for older computers) ..
