Compressing to WMV

Hi,
I installed the Flip4Mac plugin and followed Ken Stone's instructions on how to use it with compressor.
Everything is good until I click the submit button. The movie history gives me a failed result but does not explain what went wrong. I have looked over all the settings, but cannot see why it won't compress.
Any ideas?

That's progress! That did indeed work. I got my 30 seconds which was explained in the trial setup.
Unfortunately, now I got 2 questions instead of one!
Any idea why it does not work in compressor? ( that was the "easy" one)
I have seen some really high quality WMV files ( not HD as far as I know) It seems crossdisolve, zoom in and out are always painful to watch, and I find interlacing is also obvious with any type of motion.
I am wondering, how high does one set the bitrate? Is the only way to create really sharp movies to have huge files and just stream the content?

You were looking for something that is free? Doesn't exist.
    Compressor is an Apple product.
Windows Media is a, umm, Windows product. Neither company licenses the other's technologies for free. You must pay someone for the ability to transcode between incompatible and competing media formats. That company is Telestream and the best product is Flip4Mac. They also make two advanced WMV transcoders. There are far more expensive alternatives and a simple google search will yield several.
Unless she is planning to be in the media transocde and delivery business, your employer needs to determine what your delivery formats will be and attempt to focus on just one or two. If you are thinking you need to be in the biz, you need an education. Transcoding is a huge sub-niche. There are literally hundreds of incompatible, proprietary, obsolete and competing delivery codecs and each requires a plugin of some kind and most require some kind of fees.
However, you can forget all of that. You really only need to be conversant in one format: Flash. Flash is an Adobe product and that's where you should be spending your time, on the Adobe Flash forum.

  • Wmv :30 limit when compressing

First time compressing to WMV and even though the previewer and the inspector shows the complete full length, compressor only makes a 30 second movie. What am I overlooking?????
    G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9) FCP-Compressor
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   FCP-Compressor

You are using the free Flip4Mac plug-in to do the compression to WMV. The free version of the plug-in will only encode up to 30 seconds maximum, as a trial/demo.
In order to encode your entire asset, you must purchase a more full-featured version of the Flip4Mac plug-in.
Or, if you have access to a PC, you can download the Windows Media Encoder free from Microsoft and do it that way.
    Good luck.

  • Editing PAL wmv clip and converting to NTSC

I have a 50 min clip (given to me by a client) which was captured in PAL, edited, and compressed as .wmv file; the audio rate is 44.1KHz, square pixel ratio. I need to edit in FCP and convert to NTSC. I've tried rendering in FCP after it's imported, converting to NTSC before bringing it in (probably at the wrong settings), and changing the sequence settings.
I can view it fine in the viewer, but once I put it in the timeline, the sound is completely unsynched (probably the 44.1 thing), which is why I changed the sequence settings to 44.1.
I did find the macworld article from March '06 on how to successfully transfer to PAL using Compressor 2 and will use that. Here's the link for those who want it:
    http://www.macworld.com/2006/02/secrets/marchcreate/index.php
Here's my question, do I first transfer the huge clip through flip4mac to make it a .mov, or do I put it through compressor? Or, do I edit it down to the 7 - 1 minute clips I actually need from the clip, export those using ???? and then do the other conversions?

Do you think the out of sync sound is due to the
    44.1KHz as opposed to 48KHz?
    No.
    I did try changing the
sequence settings to 44.1 bringing the exact clips
in, and then rendering (which should convert from
.wmv), but it was still out of sync. Doing it that
way, should I make the sequence settings 44.1KHz but
leave it PAL until I later do the compressor
    conversion?
I'd use flip4Mac to get the files to .mov's... then edit in PAL. Export the PAL sequence to compressor for the NTSC conversion.
I think once you get them to .mov's you're possibly home free with the sync problem. FCP just doesn't support wmv's... so that could be the sync problem.

  • WMV Clips wont open browser

They use to work fine until i installed flip4mac as i recommended this but as it did not do what i wanted i unintalled it and then the clips stopped working so i reinstalled Windows Media Player and now when i go to play a wmv clip in the browser it looks af it its goons start downloading the file in the status bar but then just hangs the machine.
    Any one any ideas?
    thanks

The instructions are an issue. One the dilemmas with something like Flip4Mac is that it's not a stand alone product. The player is dependent on Quicktime, the web plugin uses Safari, the encoder/exporter a variety of apps.
If you've ever used Flip4Mac encoder in Squeeze you'll get an entirely different interface than using it in Compressor or QuicktimePro.
You can join WMV files in Quicktime Pro just as you can join mov files. It's a bit of a pain and I don't think too many folks know how to do it with mov files either.
It's easier in FCP but that's expensive way to go if you don't have FCP.
You can do it in iMovie. That should be an easy and familiar interface and it's free for most folks (even Quicktime Pro costs $30). You'd edit them like any other file. In my playing I've found it's easier to save the WMV in a MOV wrapper in QuikckTimePro and then edit the MOV file in iMovie or FPC (whatever your comfortable with). If you import the WMV directly into iMovie it'll work but might be a bit sluggish depending on your Mac.
One issue that some have raised with this approach is that one has to recompress the joined file as wmv. Ideally one should simply save it (no further compression) as wmv as I think one can do with MS Movie Maker on Windows. I think the Flip4Mac folks are aware if this (if not, I'll make sure they're aware of it) and see if they'll come up with a way to join wmvs with a simple save to wmv instead of recompression.
In any case you can join the files in QuicktimePro (kind of kludgy) or in iMovie or FCP (much easier since they're editing apps).
If you do want to do it in QuicktimePro, my bet is Quicktime Kirk can give a better explanation of it than me. With Flip4Mac wmv works the same way as mov in QuicktimePro.
BTW I do plan on writing a users guide at some point.

  • I DON't want to be right!

    Hi all,
Our website is viewed by the general public at large. We hate WMV - but unfortunately most of the world uses it extensively! On our website is full of QT compressions - but alas, many "good" people just won't, or can't download QT player.
Sooo . . . we must put a few movies on our site as WMV. We use flip4mac to compress in wmv, so PC'ers can view them on their PC's without QT.
When we add a link to our site - of course the wmv must "download" first - then the PC'er can watch it. My question! Is there a way to allow a PC'er to view the wmv video without first downloading the entire thing - which is what we do now? I guess I'm looking to allow a "progressive" download - so viewers can view the wmv like they do a QT - as it loads. And NOT have to wait until it finishes. If you look here, you'll see what I mean.
Please - somebody prove me WRONG and tell me how to allow watching a WMV as it downloads. BTW, this .mac account is not given to the public. We just use it to play with. We release everything on another URL for the public.
    Site is here . . . http://web.mac.com/larrycohen3/iWeb/Trivue/Home.html

I would think that uploading your movies in Flash would be much more user friendly then either WMV or Quicktime. Well, that is excluding the iPhone right now.

  • High-Def Codecs

Is there a way to get the High-Def codecs (other than H.264) to work on Windows? I'm specifically talking about the Apple Intermediate codec and/or the HDV codec. I would like to get my HD footage over from my Mac (in FCP) to my PC so I could compress into WMV HD files, but I can't find any way other than compressing to H.264, which introduces another recompression, not to mention it takes an eternity.
If there is no way to do this, can anyone else recommend a workflow on getting HD footage over to the PC so that it can be compresses into WMV HD?
    Thanks a bunch,

  • Posting slideshow  to video.google--size matters

I posted earlier about compressing a wmv file I had created to email and decided just to post it to video.google.
So I posted a slideshow to video.google but no matter what I do, I can't make it "full screen." See here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=874330041612533639&q=Navy+homecoming
I'm not sure what is needed so here are the particulars: Windows XP, PSE5.0, and Organizer. I created all images as 800x600 at 72 dpi, layering the photos onto black pages. I had a couple scans and zooms. Again, the base "page" was 800x600 and I scanned and zoomed within that.
I output it as a wmv file at 640x480 and then uploaded it to video.google. And I don't get full screen
Has anyone had any experience with video.google and know what I'm doing wrong?

    Hi Barb,
I was a little rushed when I wrote my first reply, I had to go to the
dentist. I'm back from the appointment and did a little more research on
    Google Video.
It looks like things are a bit more complicated. Like YouTube and other
video services, GoogleVideo re-encodes the uploaded videos. When you play
back on the web in a browser, you're seeing a flash movie. In addition, you
can download it, and that seems to give you a mp4 for ipods or gvp/gvi
(custom avi format for use with the google player) for computer viewing.
The issue is the re-encoding. I don't know what Google is doing with the
video. At the very least, they are converting to different formats and
codec than the original (flash, mp4, and gvi). They also appear to be
resizing the video to a standard frame size. I didn't try the Google Player
download, but the embeded source for the web page seems to say that the
flash movie is 400x326. So, it doesn't look like John will be able to
benefit from a higher resolution wmv as far as GoogleVideo is concerned. In
fact, it could even make it look worse depending on how the resizing is
accomplished. A higher resolution wmv will certainly look better on a
computer. And, the resolution he has will be fine for viewing on a standard
    TV.
I don't upload to GoogleVideo so I'm not familiar with the process or the
    requirements.
John's choices for resolution are very reasonable if his main intent is for
viewing on a conventional TV. (NTSC resolution is 720x480 pixels but the
pixel aspect ratio is 0.9 -- this is equivalent to 640x480 square pixels)
In general, you'll want to resize the images to close to your intended
resolution before you make the slideshow with the exception of frames that
will be panned and zoomed which will need to be larger. Resizing in
Elements or Photoshop is generally better than what you would get scaling in
PE 3, for example, and using full sized 6mb images, for example, can result
in very long render times and may cause other problems if processed in a
video editor such as PE 3.

  • Can I Preload External MPGs?

I have a lengthy piece that uses a lot of external MPGs in
addition to embedded content. It's fine on my development machine,
but I just viewed it with the client on their plant network and the
    movies took
forever to load. I'd put a "Loading" animated GIF in-between
them, but it didn't animate and, even if it had, the piece really
    drags through those loads.
Is it possible to pre-load the next MPG while one is playing?
If so, how? Also, is there some trick to getting an animated
"Loading" graphic to play while the next movie is loading?
    Thanks for any advice...

WMV files are played in the movie icon via the Windows Media
    Player ActiveX
control. On some machines there is an unavoidable delay while
    the AX control
initialises as it loads up the movie for playing. It has been
    a source of
    frustration for me for years!
You can try hiding it off screen, then use a zero-second
    motion icon to move
it back on screen as the movie starts to play. On many
    machines this appears
to happen cleanly, but on others you will see a momentary
    black flash as the
movie begins to play. Seems to be a hardware thing that's not
    controllable
by us. You may find the momentary black flash more preferable
    though. You
could, for instance, put up a black box with "Please Wait,
    Loading". The
text disappears just as you move the video back on screen.

  • Premier Elements 10 video playback is very poor and choppy

When I look at my mts files inusing premier elements 10, the video looks really bad. But when I look at the same videos using windows media player they look fine. Any idea on how I can get my videos to look good in Premier elements? I have a new high end computer.

    Don,
One big problem with using WMM Live, is that it will be heavily compressing the camera's footage to the WMV wrapper. There is one quality loss right there.
Then, because of the heavy compression to WMV, your computer will have to work overtime, to handle those WMV's in PrE. Though it IS a supported format (with the various WMV CODEC's), much additional processing must take place.
Then, if you output to another compressed format/CODEC, you will take another quality hit.
The beauty of Premiere is that, for the supported formats/CODEC's, it edits the footage in its native state, so that there is not that initial quality hit. It is also very likely that in the native format/CODEC, PrE and your computer, will not have to work so hard.
Last, if your footage uses any flavor of H.264, though supported in PrE, the speed of your CPU will come into play, regarding playback.
Lot of things to think about.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • CAN COMPRESSOR COMPRESS TO A WMV (Windows media player file?)

    Hi,
Just curious if Compressor or better yet for what I am doing final cut can compress to a wmv (windows media format)? for the sake of downloading of our website.
    thank you

Actually once you install Flip4Mac it works within compressor too. Just select quicktime export components when creating a new compression proifile and you will see all the WMV options.

  • Compressor - WMV Codec Will Only Compress 30" of 28'30" Material ??

I have a QT full rez widescreen SD 16:9 material that I am trying to compress to a WMV using the QuickTime Components WIKI and for some reason it is only converting the first 29 to 30 seconds of a 28 minute and 30 second video.  Just so you know, the duration length isn't an option for some reason and although the print is nearly a sillouette background the duration selection is 100%.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.  I've deleted the WIKI and started over like 4x and beside myself as to why this WILL NOT work :-(

Answered the problem myself . . had to upgrade my "free 30 day trial" of flip4mac for 99 bux.  geez, in a few days (1 month) an entire NLE is only 300 what the heck is wrong with me buying a plug in for a 100

  • Compressing .wmv files

Someone has given me two .wmv files that they wanted putting on a DVD as at the moment they will only play on a computer.
I have put them on the timeline of FCP and exported using compressor then with it set to fastest encode I have left it to compress. It is only 24minutes long but so far has been on all night and still only 50%.
My normal FCP movies of 1 and a half hours at higher quality only take a couple of hours with a lot of clips in.
Am I doing something wrong? Should I have just put the two clips into compressor directly (I didn't need to edit them) and then make a DVD in DVDSP?
    Peter Snowdon

Nothing wrong here, it's just the way it is.
As we know .WMV is native to PC & Quicktime to Mac,
    Therefore:
It takes ages to make a .WMV on a Mac, & ages to create a Quicktime on an equivlent PC.
A high quality 1 hour .WMV takes about 7 hours on my Mac, and 4 hours on a PC. The higher the quality the longer it will take to encode, this goes double for .wmv files.
    Hope this helps.
    Jono!

  • Question about WMV audio compression

If you export a WMV and go to the audio tab, you get the option for variable or constant bitrates. I noticed that if you choose constant (CBR), each option has a plain CBR mode or an (A/V) CBR mode. What's the difference between these two?

Thank you for your responce, Tom. But what I like to know, will converting to 25 or 30 fps leave me with quality problems like the ones mentioned before or will motion be as smooth as the original source?
