Compressor 3 - Apple TV

Hi gang,
Compressor 3 has a preset for Apple TV. Interestringly, it is set for 720p. My TV does 1080p, and my Apple TV is set for 1080i. Should I use the 720p preset for Apple TV, or should I brew up my own that would be better suited for 1080i Apple TV? If setting up my own, any advice on settings (quality is priority over processingv speed). BTW, my source material is HDV (1080i).
Cheers!

This is good to learn as I have been trying to see if I can get my HDV footage to Apple TV in something better than 960x540. I have Compressor 2, so I assume it's an Apple TV limitation right now to be able to convert HDV at 30FPS footage to 1280x720 or better for Apple TV. However, I understand you can get to that resolution if your footage is 24FPS.
960x540 looks OK, but conversion to something better would be great so I can use Apple TV with home videos. Direct hookup from camcorder to TV is great.

  • Is there a deus ex maquina for the hashed over HDV- DV conversion issues in the temples of FCP and Compressor??

I want to create a good quality SD DVD  from 1080i/60 footage (20 minutes duration) from a Sony ZiU camera (mini DV tape) using FCP and Compressor. I can't do it. My hair has fallen out, but I don't want to throw in the towel.
I have imported the same footage with different FCP presets. The video quality in FCP is excellent.
But once I send the footage to Compressor. I end up with video exhibiting gradations of the following: blurry, jagged edges, jerky movement, darker color. Poor quality especially if a subject (kids playing football) runs fast.
The QT conversion process in Ken Stone’s article (May, 2008/updated in Jan, 2011) provides the most helpful information in getting a quality SD DVD. (Quality means looking as good as SD video DVDs).  Except for the fact that the DVD is widescreen, the better quality alternative may just be to stick with the old 4:3 shooting, editing, burning methods that I’ve used for years. Unless of course, I  am missing something. Hence my appeal to the knowledgable.
FYI Equipment/software: MAC Pro (OS 10.6.8); ATI Radeon HD 4870; terabytes to spare on 2 internal hard drives; FCS - FCP 7.0.3, Compressor 3.5.3, DVDSP 4.2.2. All applications are on Drive 1. FCP project files, scratch and other setups are on drive 2.
My current settings in FCP appear below. What's wrong here? Better alternative? Or it just may be HDV should not go to a SD DVD.

I now send the Sequence to Compressor  I've tried various settings, and the split screen preview in Compressor reveals on the right side the jaggy, blurred, darker video. Same shows up after submitting; and of course if I try to burn a DVD in DVDSP.  I've followed Stone's Aug 31, 2009 article on Compressor 3.5. I experiemented with changes here and there without success (like changing field dominance of even selecting DV NTSC, etc).
If you got this far, thank you. And I really could use the help.

    Michael,
Thanks for the helpful comments. Two tactics today helped. Where ever field dominance was indicated I made sure "upper/top" was the same everywhere throughout  FCP and Compressor. That almost eliminated the jagged edges. Also, in the easy setup, I selected Apple ProRes 422 as the format, using HDV to ProRes HQ - Sony -1080i60. Sending direct to Compressor rather than through QuickTime conversion also help produce a clearer, less dark picture.
I'll try your suggesstions especially adding compression markers. I'll check back with you on results.
    Thanks

  • Vixia HF200-apple pro res?

I've searched online and throughout the apple forum, but I can't find any info that discusses the best sequence and project settings to use with a Canon Vixia HF200 camera. I bought ten of the Vixia HF200's for our school to use with Final Cut Pro 6.06 running on Quad Core and a few 8 core Intel Macs. We can ingest perfectly. No issue. And I am probably using the wrong settings, but I set the sequence preset to Apple Pro Res HQ 1920x1080 24p. Our cameras are all set to cinema mode24p. For easy setup we have been using Format:HD, Rate:all and Use at DVCPro HD-1080pA24. Our sequence settings are 1920x1080 Custom 16:9, Pixel Aspect=1440x1080, timebase=23.98 and compressor apple Pro res HQ. I've played with other settings and editing is fine and the video looks fine. However, on most of these settings we are seeing some weird by product. All exported 1920x1080 video has flash frames throughout the video. You can watch the video on an NTSC monitor or on the computer monitor and there are no flash frames. But once you export using Quicktime Movie Apple Pro Res HQ 1920x1080, then that exported file shows multiple flash frames. Again, I'm sure I have all the wrong settings. Can someone respond with the optimal settings for editing AVCHD @ 24MB from a Canon Vixia HF200 within FCP 6.06?

    Did it work before?
If so, what did you change?
If not, have you tried installing the latest ProRes Codecs?

  • Apple ProRes 422 HQ needs rendering, but it shouldn't.

Sequence Settings (hereafter called the master sequence) are:
    Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920 X 1080 24p 48khz preset.
    Frame Size: 1920 X 1080 (HDTV 1080i 16:9)
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Editing Timebase: 23.98fps
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422 HQ
    Audio: 48khz/16-bit
    Footage is:
    Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    Frame Size: 1920 X 1080
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Editing Timebase: 23.98fps
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422 HQ
    Audio: 48khz/16-bit
    Data Rate: 19.5 MB/sec
I need to put a timecode window burn on the entire movie for a web clip. So I exported a ProRes master as a QuickTime movie using the sequence settings. I then imported that clip and slipped it into a new sequence with identical settings (hereafter called TimeCode burn sequence) and was surprised to see the red render bar across the entire sequence.
As an experiment, I exported a brief (one minute) clip from the same master sequence. I then slipped that clip into my TimeCode burn sequence and it does not need rendering (it shouldn't).
I shouldn't have to render the Master clip first, only to have to re-render it once I but the window burn on. The movie is 30 min. long and the file size is 34GB. Is there a file size limit on ProRes HQ clips that don't need rendering? Why don't the shorter clips from the same sequence need rendering. I don't understand this. Very time consuming.
EDIT: I will probably end up using the Timecode Generator option in Compressor, so please don't suggest this, as I am aware of it. I want to figure out this mystery.

No, you're absolutely correct to use HQ. Just checking.
The Red footage is has 4:4:4 subsampling, so HQ's the way to go.
If you generally use Recompress All Frames on Export then you probably know that it's pointless to render your timeline before an Export, since your Render files won't be accessed. Unless you need to work in that same sequence with the timecode - but, you could just use your exported master for that.
I know the recompress all frames option is probably overkill for a sequence with only one effect, but I'm also thinking about drive space. With those huge Red files, your render files have to be eating up quite a lot of it.
So, I'm suggesting that you don't need to render this sequence before exporting. Just export the unrendered sequence with Recompress All Frames. That saves you the space the render files would be taking up.

  • Frame size and compressor

I had captured a mini DV movie in another program as an .avi file. When I import this file as is into FCE, its properties show in the browser as:
    frame size 720 x 480
    compressor DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    data rate 3.6 MB/sec
I then used MPEG Streamclip to export this .avi file into a QuickTime file in 3 different ways. The methods, and resultant properties as they show in FCE, are as follows:
    Test 1:
    Compressor = Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Frame size = 720 x 480
    Data rate = 3.6 MB/sec
    Test 2:
    Compressor = Apple Intermediate Codec
    Frame size = 720 x 480
    Data rate = 2.5 MB/sec
    Test 3:
    Compressor = Apple Intermediate Codec
    Frame size = 640 x 480
    Data rate = 2.3 MB/sec
    Observations and questions:
In the FCE canvas, Test 1 and Test 2 look pretty much identical. Test 3 looks very slightly horizontally stretched compared to the other tests. Or, as everything's relative, Test 1 and Test 2 look very slightly horizontally compressed compared to Test 3. By the way, I placed markers in each test clip at the exact same frame to get a good comparison. Then I jumped marker to marker while looking at the canvas.
QUESTION 1: Is FCE in fact handling these clips differently due to the different frame sizes?
When I play the clips in QuickTime Player (not pro), Test 1 and Test 2, which both have frame size 720 x 480, are horizontally stretched. Test 3, frame size 640 x 480, is normal. The differences between the stretched and the normal are much more pronounced than they appear in the FCE canvas. When I open the ORIGINAL .avi captured clip (720 x 480) in QT Player, it is normal, not stretched like Test 1 and Test 2 which have the same 720 x 480 size.
QUESTION 2: I know this isn't the QT forum, but is this normal behavior in QT Player?
When I open iDVD version 7.0.3 from iLife '09, the only one of the three test clips that appears in the media browser is Test 3.
QUESTION 3: Does anyone know why? I posted this in the iDVD forum; nobody replied.
I then put the three test clips on the timeline in FCE and exported the sequence as a QuickTime movie. When I play it in QT Player, it is (gulp) stretched; ALL of it, not just the Test 1 and Test 2 portions. The finished .mov file DOES appear in the iDVD media browser; when I preview it there, it is STRETCHED.
QUESTION 4: When I export .avi to QT files in MPEG Streamclip, what compressor should I choose for use in FCE?
QUESTION 5: When I export .avi to QT files in MPEG Streamclip, what frame size should I choose for use in FCE?
QUESTION 6: Why are FCE and QT Player handling the differences in frame size in different ways? FCE shows a very slight difference when viewed in the canvas, whereas QT Player shows a drastic stretching when playing the clips.
    Thanks for your help.

QUESTION 1: Is FCE in fact handling these clips differently due to the different frame sizes?
Apple Intermediate Codec is reserved to transcode HD content (from HDV or AVCHD). Don't use it for Stand def DV-NTSC nor PAL.
QUESTION 2: I know this isn't the QT forum, but is this normal behavior in QT Player?
There is a setting in quicktime player pro under movie properties (command-J) to select the correct aperture option. That's enable the correct aspect ratio when movie is opened with quicktime.

DVCPRO50-NTSC for standard definition and Apple Intermediate Codec (1080i60 or 50 or 720p) for HD.
QUESTION 5: When I export .avi to QT files in MPEG Streamclip, what frame size should I choose for use in FCE?
720X480 for SD, 1920X1080 or 1280X720 for HD

  • FCP export to compressor 4.3 not 16.9

FCP project is importing to DVD Pro in a 4.3 format instead of 16.9.
Project used apple pro res codec, so  for testing image I choose in compressor apple pro res interlaced high quality......even for standerd def, image looks bad and is in wrong format?
I have burned DVD's form this project before and they looked fine...wondering what I did before????
    Any help appreciated,
    Catherine

It's nearly 3 years since I used DVDSP but from memory I think there is a control in the Inspector (bottom right) that can change the aspect ratio.
As there are several tabs at the top of the Inspector which open new windows, you will have to try them all until you find the correct window as I can't remember which it is.

  • Compressor 2.1 crashing

Compressor 2.1 started crashing on launch for me. It crashes standalone and export form FCP 5.1.1.
I didn't update anything and the other Pro apps work as expected.
I've already tried these two Apple tips:
Removing the /Library/Receipts/ProRuntime.pkg receipt and /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ProKit.framework file and then download and install Pro Application Support 3.1 for Tiger.
And go to /Library/Receipts and, if found, drag the following files to the Trash:
    • Compressor.pkg
    • Qmaster_Applications.pkg
    • Qmaster_Frameworks.pkg
    • Qmaster_Plugins.pkg
    • Qmaster_Services.pkg
Then, go to /Applications and, if found, drag the following files to the Trash:
    • Compressor
    • Apple QMaster
    • Apple Qadministrator
From your install disc, reinstall Compressor and Apple Qmaster (in custom install window, make sure that Compressor and Apple Qmaster items are checked). Once you have reinstalled the Compressor and QMaster applications and services, install all updates using Software Update and restart your computer.
    Then I repaired permissions
    Didn't work.
Compressor 2.1 still crashes on launch.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks,

I've finally got Compressor to stop crashing on launch.
I booted into Safe mode, and Compressor worked fine.
Then I eliminated the start-up items Qmaster and Iloc from the user Startup Items folder.
I also disabled the Login item Default folder.
    Rebooted and Compressor worked fine.
I added back QMaster and Compressor was OK.
    Added back iLoc Compressor OK
I downloaded the latest version of Default Folder and first uninstalled it, and then reinstalled the most current version.
    Rebooted and Compressor didn't crash.
    Rebooted again and no crash.
Maybe an out of date Default Folder was causing the crash.
Other than that, I believe everthing was the same.

  • Can't start ANY projects in Compressor. New or Old.

    Here's my problem:
I open Compressor, and it doesn't automatically open a new batch window like it's supposed to. So I click File>New Batch. Nothing happens. Everything in the Job menu is grayed out and I can't import any new media or even open previous Compressor projects. I've trashed the preferences, cleared the Qmaster cache, and removed and reinstalled Compressor, Apple Qmaster, and Motion and I still can't get it to work.
    Any ideas?

There are a few things that people have tried in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9965769#9965769
When you say "new or old" do you mean, Compressor 3 and 3.5, or new and old Compressor projects?

  • Problem with Video Quality when exporting to Quicktime or using compressor

I've attempted exporting a video sequence (stills with transitions, video footage and audio tracks) directly as a QuickTime Movie and using Compressor (Apple-DVD-HD_30 Minutes) for import into DVD Studio. The export process seems to work well for each. Only problem: the video seems to get a bit distorted at random spots. The best way to describe the distortion: images (still and video) seem to blur and squiggle for a few frames at a time. This distortion is especially prevalent during more complex transitions (3 Spins and such). The sequence is nice and clean in Final Cut. I'm only seeing this distortion after export. Thanks for any thoughts you might have on this issue.

    @Harm,
"Pear-shaped" (or sometimes "fruit-shaped") is a euphemism meaning that the effort has gone awry; it was a mess.
    @John,
Export to DVD is a PPro 2.0 function; in CS3 it is now Export to Encore. Is that what you meant?
First thing is to check the field orders of your source material and of your export settings. Don't invert them, and don't deinterlace interlaced footage.
Perhaps a short list of the settings you have tried (and why you chose those settings) would help us help you.

  • FCP movie to MV4 for iPod/iPhone/AppleTV through QT and Compressor: QT wins

Hello everyone, first the question, then a little background on why and what I have done and tested:
*What are the details for compressor settings to match the export formats in Quicktime Pro 7 for iPhone, iPod and AppleTV?*
    +The background:+
+I am adding a few titles, lower thirds, and open and end credits to a few 1 hour shows that will be distributed as Video Podcasts using iTunes and a Mac OS X Server.+
+The source materials came from a 1024 x 768 capture using Wimba capture (set at 1024x768 @ 15fps) and I went ahead added a few Motion templates for open and end credits with a few edits.+
+I could not see RT (Real Time) video playback in FCP, I am assuming due to the source format:+
    -m4v
    -AAC
    +-Mono audio+
    -H.264
    -1024x768
    -15fps
    +-415.41 kbps+
+I have my Motion templates set for HD (16:9) and the source materials were at 4:3.+
+In any case I created a small sequence in FCP with settings at 640x360.+
+Then I had to Export a QT movie, which gave me documents around the 5GB/hour mark. The quality is very good.+
+Now, to the compression. I open Compressor and exported the movies using the default:+
+-H.264 for Apple TV *Estimated Size: 2.05GB - Excellent Quality*+
+-H.264 for iPod video and iPhone 320x240 (QVGA) *Estimated Size: 246MB - Bad Quality*+
+-H.264 for iPod video and iPhone 640x480 *Estimated Size: 614MB - Very Good Quality*+
+To my surprise, the documents were very large. I need this for portability yet, keeping up great quality.+
    +*Five (5) Episodes - 3hrs 20minutes - Using Compressor Apple iPhone Setting*+
+I created my own setting through compressor, but it still was a 410MB with good quality.+
+I thought to give the QT Export through Quicktime 7 Pro feature a chance, and I did, to my surprise, the Quicktime 7 Pro Export to iPod and the Quicktime 7 Pro export to Apple TV were fantastic, great quality, and the size just right, plus the exports were very fast, around 15 minutes per hour.+
+- QT Export to iPod *Estimated Size: 158MB - Very Good Quality*+
+- QT Export to Apple TV *Estimated Size: 182MB - Excellent Quality*+
    +*Five (5) Episodes - 1hr 15minutes - Using Quicktime Pro 7 Export to iPhone*+
*That's why I would like to know what are the QT default settings for exporting to the Apple devices, to add such settings to compressor and get the same results.*
Please let me know if you know this.
BTW, I tried using Qmaster to farm out the rendering of compressor, and with these same documents it took almost twice as long to do compress the documents because of the copying of the source. I am not sure if there is a better way to use Qmaster, since I have access to a full-time dedicated Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon , you'd think that would speed up the process, but it really didn't.
    Thank you.

  • Apple Qmaster File Agent not found

Anyone know how to fix this error?
Anyone know how to re-install the applications from App Store...
    Very fustrating....

hi, just saw this whilst trawling this forum looking for something specific.. This is a bit heavy handed! lol.
    simply
shut down qmaster etc via the Compressor/ apple qumater menu.
delete the ~/library/application support/Apple Qmaster folder
restart and set up compressor/ qmaster again .
A very detailed explanation of this procedure is here at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17356372#17356372
sounds a bit heavy to remove the applications... yeah appzapper.app is cool though!
    see above.
The file agent missing seems like a timing issue I think compounded by some corruption of he state information in compressor V4 in the ~/library/application support/Apple Qmaster folder. THere will erros logged in the /var/logs and also in the apple qmaster logs at ~/library/application support/Apple Qmaster/Logs.
    worth a look.

  • How do I match a clip to sequence settings and sequence presets?

I'm getting the warning: Attention - This clip does not match this sequence's settings or any or our sequence presets.
I'm trying to figure out how to set things up in Compressor so that my clips do match my sequence settings and presets. The issue seems to be with the audio not matching.
    Here are the sequence settings:

  • Export QuickTime Movie shifts field order

In august I finished grading a project and made a QT Prores 422 master file for the client to have delivered on a hard drive.
The client has kept quiet until now about an issue - the field order seems to be wrong. I couldn't believe my ears when he told me that. The timeline is lower (even) while the QT file he had received is Upper (odd).
I selected 5 seconds of the timeline and exported using CMD+E, and it says "Setting: current settings". So I thought it would be lower field as the timeline - but no - it comes out as upper, every single time.
How does this happen? Do I really have to make a conversion through compressorr?!

The following settings are the same for the prepped timeline and the one that came back from Color
    *Sequence settings*
    720x576 PAL Anamorphic 16:9
    Field Dominance: Lower (even)
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422
    *Item Properties*
    Frame Size: 720x576
    Anamorphic: Yes
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422
    Field Dominance: Lower (even)
However, I think I nailed it. Gonna do some further testing to make sure though... In the Export to QuickTime Movie window, I found that I can select some other setting, using ProRes 422 PAL Anamorphic for instance. And as far as I know - PAL is always lower field, and it seemed to work for the first test I did.

  • What Should my sequence settings for H264, 1280x720/30fps be.  Pro Res422?

I have a job coming up and an fully aware of the nightmare of editing H.264.  The footage I've got was shot on a flip camera.  H.264, 1280x720 at 30fps.  The deliverable is DVD.  Am I right in choosing ProRes 422 for the sequence settings?  I notice when comparing the clip in the browser window to the same clip in the viewer window, the clip in the viewer window looks a tad wider.  Is this a pixel aspect thing.
    My sequence settings are as follows;
    Under the General Tab;
    Frame Size: 1280x720
    Aspect ratio: HDTV 720p (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio:  Square  (Anamorphic 16:9 is unchecked0
    Field Dominance: Lower (even)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    QuickTime Video Settings:
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422
    Quality: 100
    Audio: 44.1

Shane, thank you for your reply.   I want to be sure I understand you correctly.  Convert the footage before bringing it in to FCP (compressor), or can I just render in the time line as I build the sequence?  I plan on exporting a same as file for use in DVD studio Pro for a deliverable.

  • Why wont my Logic Studio installer fully install?

i had manually uninstalled logic studio months ago.. now that i have an external hd im installing it again but it wont install many of the other components.. they are grayed out and uncheckable (soundtrack pro, compressor, apple loops, and many more)... i need help so that i can have logic studio on my mac and the additional content on my external hd...
    thanks in advance!

Although not offically supported, there is a workaround people have been using to get Logic 8 to work on Lion. All you need to do is highlight the Logic 8 app in finder, right-click, select "Show Package Contents", double click on the "Contents" folder and inside of this folder is a folder that's labled "MacOs." If you double-click on the "Logic Pro" file inside, Logic 8 will open. You might be able to make an alias of this file to cut out the other steps, but I haven't tried it.
This works for people who already had Logic 8 installed and upgraded to Lion.

  • Need video in ppt - QT choppy

I need to insert a 15 min. video in a powerpoint presentation. The iMovie works great but when I exported it "Movie to Quicktime Movie" with default settings, the qt playback is at times choppy. This is before and after inserting into PPT.
    Using 10.4.4
    768 MB DDR SDRAM
    1.07 GHz
    What should I do?

    Roman
how did you convert the movie exactly ? it sounds like you used the wrong setting.
you used File > Export to DV ... but you should have used File > Export to Quicktime...
in the Movie Exporter window choose:
Compressor: Apple DV-PAL, Quality: 100% - leave the opther settings on their default
then press "Make Movie" and save to your Scratch Disk, then import to FCP
    cheers
    Andy
