Compressor's output: every 15th frame is blurry

Every 15th frame in my MPEG2 (.mv2) file created by Compressor is blurry:
http://eidschun.fastmail.fm/Eidschun-Every15th_FrameBlurry.mpeg
My GOP settings are the default: closed, 15 in size, IBBP in structure.
My source footage is DV, shot in progressive mode. My sequence setting is progessive. I'm rendering to uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2. I'm exporting using current settings, with audio and video, with DVD SP markers, and as a self-contained movie.
Has anyone had this problem before? Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks.

Hi Steven,
See this discussion:
http://www.kenstone.net/discussions/read.php?3,13048,13048#msg-13048
Basically, I believe that the fundamental problem is with FCP, as it seems to be generating QT output that "confuses" Compressor.
Either of the three following "solutions" work for me:
1) GOP structure: IBBP
GOP type: closed
GOP size: 7
Two-pass VBR encode
2) GOP structure: IBBP
GOP type: closed
GOP size: 15
CBR encode
In fact, CBR encoding should work regardless of the GOP structure.
3) Do not export an entire Master Sequence. Instead, export each of its sub-Sequences individually,
encode each individually using Compressor, then concatenate the resulting MPEG2 files in DVD SP.

  • Pixels appear every 1 frame between 13 frames last about 15 sec

I got master which is HD 1920 x 1080 prores then convert it to 720 x 480 widescreen then compressing it to m2v. Notice pixels appear every 1 frame between 13 frames last about 15 sec on m2v. Why is that? Is there other compressor program than apple compressor. I use Compressor 3.5.3.

YOu don't need to do that first compression. Just take your HD output into Compressor and use the DVD presets.  Your method is adding a compression step that is unnecessary, and might be the cause of those issues.

  • Compressor and outputting progressive mpeg-2's

Ok, bit of a dilemma here. Within compressor and outputting a file for a dvd project (mpeg-2), I've created 2 droplets. One, I have set the frame rate to "automatic" and the field output to "automatic" to use with my stock footage containing a frame rate of 23.98. After compressor has created the .m2v file I can import this into DVDSP with no problems. However, the second droplet I have created I have set the frame rate to "23.98" (same as source) and the field output to "progressive"...using this option allows me to control the GOP settings which is why I created the second droplet to begin with. The .m2v file that is output by this droplet will NOT import into DVDSP. It tells me the file format is not compatible. This is confusing me, because both .m2v files should be the same, no?
Can someone explain to me why setting the output fields to "automatic" rather than defining the output settings would make a difference even though the defined output is the same as the source file? I'm confused.

  • DVCpro50 shot at 23.98 interlace problems every fifth frame ... help

I have footage shot on DVCpro50 with the SDX900 Panasonic camera at 23.98 frame rate and I have captured it with the AJ-SD93 Panasonic deck through the built in Firewire cable to my G5 dual 2,7 ghz sysem with a Lacie Porsche 250 gb drive.
I captured using a custom capture preset that I made using the DVCpro 50 NTSC compressor at 720x480, setting frame rate to 23.97 (initially and then tried 29.97 later) and checked Anamorphic as well (footage is 16x9).
The problem is that on playback the image appears to be tearing, especially on all movement. This happens when watching in Viewer and in a sequence (set to match the clips capture settings). When I step through the image frame by frame it is clearly every fourth frame which gets jaggy and the edges of moving objects seperate and "tear" and then it is fine on the next frame. This appears on both my computer monitor and on my NTSC monitor.
I assumed that meant it was a pulldown issue and tried adjusting the pulldown settings in the playback control to no avail.
I have done a lot of reading on this discussion board as well as much experimentation with different capture presets and have found only a very slight difference between capturing the footage at 23.97 or at 29.97. It looks slightly better at 29.97 but the problem is still there.
When I go to the desktop level and look at the quicktime files with the quicktime player they look fine. IE no tearing and smooth playback. When I step through the image with the qtime player every fourth frame is a repeated frame which is also what I see when I look at the master tape frame by frame with the AJ-SD93 deck cabled directly to a NTSC monitor. This I assume is the pulldown on the tape created by the camera when recording 23.97 video rate to the 29.97 tape.
So then I decided I would take the footage at 29.97 with the repeated pulldown frames since that looks fine on both the tape and the qucktime files BUT when I captured at 29.97 it played back once showing a "clean" image - no tears, the fourth frame a repeated frame BUT then when I played a second time it switched and began displaying the fifth frame as a "tear" again.
So then I thought this is simply a playback issue and if I edit to tape on the AJ-SD93 it will "pullup" the image and fix the problem as it goes back to tape BUT NO. The tearing was worse when I layed it back to tape.
SO what is happening? Can anyone out there help?
My preference is to capture at 23.97FPS DCVpro50 NTSC anamorphic and be able to play back with out any tearing.
    Is this possible?

you should try capturing as regular run of mill video. launch cinema tools, import the video file, remove the telecine and then import the .rev file into fcp.
i'm assuming the sdx900 is writing the video at 29.97fps interlaced. changing the frame rate of the capture compressor is mucking up your workflow. try cinema tools, see what happens.

  • Compressor is adding ONE random frame to the beggining of my videos... why?

I am exporting a video with the settings depicted in the screenshot below.
For some UNKNOWN AND IDIOTIC REASON, compressor is grabbing one random frame from the middle of my video and adding it to the front of my video.
You can see it in all of it's stupid action here:
    http://howtofightnow.com/check-your-****-email/
This causes an odd flash, and just generally looks horrible.
Why is it doing this inexplicable and absolutely unnecessary stupidity?

Sure.... transcode before you bring into the editor and then youre files are 150 times the size that they need to be for editing.  Having filled up about 5 dfferent 4tb drives even after media manager, I'm done with that.  How does a 64gb memory card filled turn into 450 gb when logged and transferred?  It's too much.
NAS is related to distributed processing because you can't simply expect your Mac's to efficiently access a drive simply because it's shared.
For example, I have a 12tb G-Speed drive... the fastest connection I can provide to that drive is a Firewire 800 from my MacPro.  That means that everyone is limited to that connection speed, as opposed to having the ability to connect directly to the data with a 1gb ethernet connection... wayyyyyyyyyy faster.  That's multiple computers with a dedicated lighning fast connection, instead of everyone sharing one single moderate connection.
Additionally, if my editor is working and I restart my computer with the shared drive... media disconnect for him.  I'm essentially tied to his activities.   Beyond that, even if we share a project, you have to reconnect media from every computer you use because the path of referenced media is changed... instead of:
/gspeed/media being the source for media (if I saved it on my home computer), everyone needs to reconnect to:
macpro/shared/gspeed/media... this is a huge headache when multiple people are working on projects.
The NAS drive allows the absolute fastest, uninterruptable connection to data... my transcoding time has been cut down to about a FIFTH of what it was.  You can do this through a normal shared folder, but depending on the hardware involved in your network, you might find yourself incredibly limited.

  • Every 12th frame...

Okay, I have a wedding ceremony that is like 20 minutes long. After using an Mpeg-2 Highest Quality (60 minutes) encode I have the following problem. The whole video looks great up until about the 15:40 mark. At this point every 12th frame of my 23.98 progressive footage has a digitized mosaic-y look. THe weird thing is that eventually gets to the point where it is every frame artifacty. This all happens for about a minute then suddenly everything is back to normal. I tried re-encoding to no avail.
The original footage is fine, so its not the camera or tape.To make things more interesting, in my edit I am cutting between two different cameras and the effect happens on both cameras footage during this time 15:40 to 16:50 time period.
There are no effects or transitions used. Also it should be noted that my workflow has been perfect for my first 2 projects.
ADDITION - I tried just encoding the 15:40-16:60 segment as a separate clip in compressor and it works fine, so I really don't know what to do.

    Thanks Brian.
I haven't used the Field Shifter Filter because Graeme suggests on another post that it's not required.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=479251&tstart=0
Quote: "Remove the Apple shift fields filter - let the plugin handle all the field stuff"
However, Ive just discovered the problem goes away completely if I set Field Dominance to Progressive (in Compressor).
Is there any harm in doing this?
My bulk audience will be watching on TV - and quite a few of them are likely to be people with older TVs and DVD players.
If it's OK to use Progressive, should I alter the FCP Sequence Settings at all? (NONE - for instance)

  • Fx TimeCode In Premiere CS5.5 - Non Linear Evolution (Jumps Every 24 Frames) ?

Hi, Can anyone please provide some feedback on an issue I am having with an fx TimeCode that I have placed in a video clip of a sporting event? I have set the TimeCode to SMPTE format with the source set as either "Cip" or "Generate" and the TimeCode display is set to 25. The timer starts at a specific point in the event and runs through just past the end of the event. If I advance the video one frame at a time the timer follows this in a linear manner with increments of 0.01 seconds per frame for 24 frames then the timer jumps by 0.76 seconds when advancing to the 25th frame. It seems as though the timer is compensating every 25th frame to keep in synchrony with real time in the video. My thought were that the timer should advance by 0.04 seconds per frame for a 25fps video in true linear manner without these large incremental jumps? Is there any setting I can use to get the time to advance in linear manner by 0.04 secs per frame instead of 0.01 secs per frame for the 1st 24 frames followed by this large jump of 0.76 secs on the 25th frame? I am trying to extract timings at the granularity of hundredths of a second so any help in resolving this would be most appreciated. Rgds

I think that I might not be interpreting the SMPTE timecode format correctly, my original understanding was that it was in the format of:
    hh:mm:ss:hundredths of seconds
however, I am now thinking it is in the format of:
    hh:mm:ss:frames
So, the timecode is counting time in the granularity of seconds and the figures to the right of the seconds after the colon is the framce count in that second. On the assumption that this is correct then an SMPTE timecode is not what I need. I need a timer that can count in one hundredths of a second.
Any suggestions for inserting a timer to count in one hundredths of a second most appreciated.
    Rgds

  • Every Other Frame is Blank &Green with MP4 Share

When rendering an imported Motion JPEG OpenDML- AVI clip to MP4, every other frame comes out solid green when played with Quicktime Pro and iTunes, or an iPod. I have no issues with playing the source AVI clip in Quicktime. I have no issue with playing other mp4 clips (h264 compression) in Quicktime. It is only MP4 clips (h264 compression) that have been rendered by PE 7.0 that seem to have this flickering issue. The blank frames are not displayed if the clip is re-imported in to PE 7 or if viewed in SUPER transcoder. I have played with the compatibility setting on the Advanced Export Settings dialog box, but to no avail. Also, this issue does not occur when exporting the project to WMV, but I need MP4 for broad compatibility reasons.
Other details: To be able to import the AVI (an MJpeg from a digital camera) I had to install an additional codec from Main Concept. This allowed the AVI clip to be viewable and playable in Premiere. I have tried to make this project as simple as possible: I trimmed the imported clip to 20 seconds and have no editing or effects, whatsoever. The clip plays fine inside Premiere. WHen I go to share it, I select iPod high quality preset and then render the file. It will not play properly in Quicktime Pro or iTunes. As mentioned, I can play it with SUPER transcoder, but that program is cumbersome and when transcoding the file, it ends up much larger than what Premiere exported.
I run an HP elitebook 8530w with:
    Vista downgraded to XP
    QX9300 Quadcore @ 2.53 Ghz
    4G Ram
    Premiere Elements 7.0
    Operating System: Windows XP
    Browser: Mozilla
Video capture card / driver: NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M (512MB)
Source was captured from Digital Still Camera (Nikon)

OK, I figured this out after 2 days:
MP4 rendering in PE 7.0 will produce a file with every other screen blank and green when utilizing the iPod presets. Oddly, even though it does not display properly with Quicktime or iTunes (which uses Quicktime) it WILL work when loaded to the iPod. This is an Apple issue, not a PE issue. You CAN solve the incompatability (between iPod and Quicktime/iTunes) problem by rolling back Quicktime to 7.4.5. There is also a discussion of MP4 compatibility issues with AppleTV @ http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5705015 These settings are the ones to use if you want an MP4 to play on your desktop. The upshot of that discussion for me was for desktop playback, you need to tinker with the "Advanced" Settings dialog box (accessed through the "Share" and then "Mobile Phones and Players" buttons.) You need the the Profile set to "Main" and the Compatibility set to "Standard." For iPod playback, you need the Profile set to "Baseline" and Compatibility set to "iPod." If you want to know why, go to Wikipedia.org and type in h.264.
Steve is right- to play with Motion Jpeg, you have to install additional codecs. PE then works just fine. I got mine at http://www.free-codecs.com/Motion_JPEG_Codec_download.htm

  • Is is standard for JSP to output every newline character it sees?

I've encountered a very annoying problem using JSP. It seems JSPC outputs every newline character it sees in the JSP page -- even if it is after a JSP comment or JSP directive. Look at the sample JSP at the bottom: it will output 4 blank lines (3 from comments + 1 from directive) before it prints "JSP Body Line 1". Granted, this is not a big problem if the content is HTML and will be viewed in a browser. However, my content has to be plain text because the client in my case is not always a browser.
I've tested this on both JRun and TomCat. Same results. I don't understand why is this, because intuitively the JSP designer would not have meant to output those blank lines, right? I'm wondering if this is really an "official" behavior prescribed by the JSP standard, or just an oversight in JRun and TomCat? Could any expert help me verify this in JSP standard (by the way, which one is the official document that spells out the JSPC implementation?) or anyone help me test it in other App Server (e.g. WebLogic, WebSphere, etc.) which I don't have access to? Your help is greatly appreciated!
    ======= Sample JSP code ========
    <%-- JSP Comment Line 1 --%>
    <%-- JSP Comment Line 2 --%>
    <%-- JSP Comment Line 3 --%>
    <@ page contentType="text/plain" %>
    JSP Body Line 1
    JSP Body Line 2
    ...

The truth is, newlines (as far as HTML or most XML is concerned) are just any old kind of whitespace. An extra line or two isn't a major problem, the only time this will really cripple you is if you want to insert scriptlets above the <?xml...> line.

  • AE is grabbing an unimported file and playing it every other frame

Ive been working on an illustrator comp in AE CS3 with no problems until i increased the project length past one frame. I interpreted the footage to loop so i could animate with it, only to find that AE is playing a file that i never once imported, every other frame. Its those colored tv bars with a black sign in the upper left with the name of a pdf file that was sitting in the same folder as my comp. Not only that but its playing extremely slow.
I removed the offending pdf, created a new project and brought the original illustrator comp in to see if it would still appear and its gone, but now i have no way i getting my project back and no idea if this is going to happen again.

Sounds like you may have imported the Illustrator document and the PDF as an image sequence, rather than as individual images.  Did they have sequential names?
In your original (problematic) comp, replace the original file with the Illustrator document, but ensure the "Image Sequence" checkbox is not checked in the import dialog box.

  • Is there a way to test Compressor's output before total rendor?

I have a few HDV sequences that I shoot each month. I use Final Cut Pro to edit them. Then Compressor to output to the format I need.
I always have goof ups and unexpected results, so I'm wondering if there's a way to allow Compressor to output say a minute of video and then view the results to ensure I set things properly?
Today I have to wait centuries for things to render.
I upgraded/replaced my G5 iMac with a dual Xeon 2.66 with the high-end graphics card. Sure Motion plays great, sure FCP RT extreme works perfectly--but rendering still takes 8 to 12 hours for 20 minutes of video. guess that's what I get for sourcing it in HDV...
    Any suggestions?

Thanks. I'm new to FCP and editing in general (not doing it professionally, just the guy at corporate who got the responsability) So I don't often think of this kind of stuff.
    Appreciate the patients.
So is shooting in HDV using a CANON XH A1 at 1080i/60 and then down converting in compressor for letterboxed iPod video the right course of action?
If I could just get the output settings for this workflow down, I could elminiate a lot of my frustration. But it seems like its a crap shoot everytime I finish editing the video to convert it to the various formats.

  • How can I generate automatic inspection lots every 15th day

    Hello,
My client receives chemicals (Raw Mat) every day. Incoming inspn is done only for physical spec and Usage deciison is taken on same day itself.
As he is getting raw mat from good vendors, he usally do chemical analysis every 15th day.
Whats the best way for me to map this process of generating inspection lot on every 15 day. initial incoming lot we cant use as he already taken UD on that.
15 day chemical analysis dont have any impact on qty posting as Raw mat usally will be consumed.
Is there anything other than manual lot. I welcome all ideas.

In this case your looking at a pooled sample of the approx. 15 batches of material that were received in.  Correct?
If you are batch managed, then no.  Since the sample is a composite sample, you can't link it to anything else really and you don't have a batch number to enter into the inspection lot upon creation.  First, you'd have to create a dummy batch to hold the results.  Which you could do maybe by date if your system allows external batch numbering.
Then you could at least manually create the inspection lot.
The is no true "event" to trigger the creation of the inspection lot as there is when you do a GR.  The only why you could trick the system would be if your were willing to maintain a separate storage location, and do a stock posting to it of the sample quantity each day.  Then you could have an inspection plan that would create a skip lot each day.  On the 15th day it would become required.  You would probably utilize a copy of movement type 411 for this and use that custom one to make the moves.
The problem with this is then you'll have to write off that little bit of material at some point for accounting purposes.
Another option.. you could create dummy batch and set a 15 day inspection interval on it.  Use deadline mointoring to create the lot one day in advance of expiration.
One more option:  Use standard calibration inspection to set up a calibration program.. I.e. recalibate every 15 days.

  • Capture problem -- blurred motion every 4th frame.

revised posting to an earlier question...
any of you fcp folks ever experienced a capture phenomenon where every fourth frame of a captured 24p (2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal) clip was BLURRED by thin horizontal lines WHEREVER THERE IS MOTION WITHIN THE FRAME? this results in a stilted "jerky" motion when the clip is played. other words, a character moves an arm-- every 4th frame of that movement is "blurred" with these thin lines.
i'm shooting an xl2, at 24p advanced, 16:9. 1/48th shutter. capture is set for dvntsc 23.98 with 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal and 16:9 anamorphic.
strange thing is, i've captured and edited 21 reels clean, without this problem. then had a capture issue where a few clips, for some reason, captured at 29.97 so i reset my capture settings as above and captured these clips again. since that time (the last two reels of shot footage) i've had this bizarre fourth frame issue crop up where the motion is blurred by these lines. something's going on but damned if i can figure it out.
few forum guys have offered help but nothing that's solved the issue and the question is now buried so... here 'tis again. thanks.

    Some basic questions:
Have you upgraded to iMovie HD 6.0.3 (v6.0 had jerkiness in its PAL export)?
Have you set iMovie video preference to the same standard as your camcorder (PAL = 25 fps or NTSC = 29.97 fps)?
    Is FileVault turned off?

  • Every fifth frame is repeated when speeding up footage

Hello, I have some footage recorded at 29.97 fps and I am trying to speed it up to make a timelapse. I import the footage into my sequence and click the 'match sequence settings' option so the sequence is at 29.97 fps as well. The problem I have is when I right click the clips and change the speed/duration to 2000% (I also tried 1500, 1800, 2400), every fifth frame is repeated. Is there a better way of going about this? Thanks.

Hello, thanks for your response. I am using CS6. I have done some troubleshooting thanks to Michael MTT and have tried importing some footage from my 7D at 29.97 as well. It seems to have the same issue. However, if I export the footage and import it back into premiere, all of the frames are there, so it seems like it is just doing this for the preview.
If I view my sequence settings, the preview file format is P2 1080i-1080p 50Hz DVCPROHD, the codec is DVCPRO HD 1080i 50Hz, the width/height is 1920x1080, and the maximum bit depth and render quality are both unchecked. It seems to me that it isn't previewing the fifth frame to run more smoothly, which is fine with me. Is this normal for Premiere to do? If it doesn't seem like there's a problem I'll go ahead and mark this as resolved.
Thanks for the help and suggestions.
