Compressor writing to OS drive

I have had this trouble with compressor 4.0 also. I just switched to AME instead until 4.1 thinking Apple would have fixed the big issues. Still same thing. I set my output to my external and watch it start writing at 1-3mb/s to my SSD OS drive. Also even with the 1 extra instance on for my 2012 iMac I only get a total of 500% average CPU usage vs AME 700% average.
Is there a fix for these two issues or am I just going to have to keep using AME CC?
The biggest concern is the writes to SSD as I don't want to be up for an SSD replacement in one years time and pay Apple a grand just to replace it.

You could probably use ORA_FFI which allows you to call out to a
3rd party DLL. If you have some code which reads the credit
card details then you could call this directly from Forms.

  • Compressor on an external drive?

Hiya guys! I have my FCS and OS 10.4 just sitting here staring at me. I won't be able to upgrade my machines for at least 45 days. I wanted to work on some audio so I installed Tiger and Soundtrack Pro on to an external drive.
I've heard many good things about Compressor 2 and I am currently in the finishing stages of editing a current project. I was wondering if I installed Compressor onto the external drive if it would work OK. Just seems like it could get choked up running off of the xternal and I don't really have much time to waste here.
Anybody doing anything like this? This should work right? I am going to set up a test over nite but was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

X- your assumptions are correct- I was just wondering if Compressor could be run off the external B/c it is very processor intensive. Sorry for the confusion. I'm pretty good at that.

I am surprised to hear this. I thought I had read that the mpeg2 encoding was a bit slower but better quality in Compressor 2. I hate the results I get from Compressor 1. You saw the demo i sent you. That's actually MUCH better qulity than what I was getting with Compressor. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong but i don't think so.
I had a hard enough time convincing the powers that be to buy 2 universal upgrades. They just wanted to buy 1 and install on both machines but I refused.
I totally forgot about bitvice. I downloaded demos of Cleaner and Squeeze and did some testing and just didn't see a huge difference in quality. At least not enough to justify it to the boss. I'll have to give Bitvice a try. But I would be hard pressed to buy anything right now.
I'll respond to any further replies tomorrow. I'm pushing 12 hours and ready to go home. Thanx guys

  • Where can one fine documentation on writing a HS driver?

    Hi,
We'd like to write a Transparent Gateway driver for our product. From our initial research, it appears to be a reasonable task given the skills we have on-hand. Unfortunately, the HS configuration tables are only partially documented, and I have not found any specification on the TGxxx component(s) at all.
We've considered writing an ODBC driver for the system, however, that add several layers of unnecessary complexity. Where can I find such documentation? Is there a developer license or agreement that is necessary?

  • Error Code -36 While Writing to External Drive

I have a 2.16GHz Core Duo MacBook Pro with the 100GB 7200 RPM HDD and 1GB 667 RAM. I am trying to use my MBP with a Western Digital 250GB MyBook Essential external HDD connected via USB 2.0.
The external HDD used to be formatted with FAT32 (I was unaware) and I could read and write small files to the drive with no problem. However, when I tried to copy my iTunes folder to the drive (21.7 GB) I would always get an error soon after the transfer began. The error message reads:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "08 Bottle of Blues.mp3" could not be read or written. (Error Code -36).
The message will always come up on the same file. If I delete the file mentioned in the error message, the error will still come up after about the same amount of time has elapsed, but just on a different file.
Recently, I learned that the external drive was FAT32 so I formatted it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I still get the same error.
I have tried using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0b5 and SuperDuper! 2.1.4 and neither application can complete the transfer--using the Mac OS Extended file system. CCC gives me the error:
15:45:02 Error: asr: could not copy /./Applications/AppleScript/Script Editor.app/Contents/Resources/no.lproj/ScriptEditorHelp/gfx/sedebug.jpg; Input/output error
    15:45:02
    15:45:02
15:45:05 ccc.sh: The restore operation failed, Error code: 98
    SuperDuper! gives me the error:
    | 04:00:49 PM | Error | ditto: /Users/caseyhancock/.Trash/Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive/Office/Fonts/./MS Mincho.ttf: Input/output error
AppleCare support hasn't been able to help me, and I feel like I've searched exhaustively for information about Error Code -36. If anyone could shed some light on my problem and help me backup/copy files to this external HDD I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

In my experience, it was a BAD EXTERNAL DRIVE...
sometimes they are bad (and the one I had was a external USB 120 GB Western Digital) due to fall, or something, and you can format and they work, but they have a place on the disk that is just bad, and freezes the external disk, and it is unable to accept commands.
A way of testing this, is to write to the entire disk..
Doing this will kill the entire drive, but will allow you to verify that you can write to the whole drive... (in addition to erasing everything on it.. )
make sure the disk is mounted in the finder.. and give it a uniqe name... so it will be easy to distinguish in the commands below.
THE FOLLOWING IS INTENDED AS A GUIDE. VERIFY YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING BEFORE YOU DESTROY VALUABLE DATA..
    open the terminal program:
    type the following:
    df -h
you should see all the disks that the are connected to the system. a sample of the output is below:
it does not look so nice, as the font is not monospaced, but on the terminal window it lines up nicely:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s2 186G 124G 62G 67% /
    devfs 97K 97K 0B 100% /dev
    fdesc 1.0K 1.0K 0B 100% /dev
    <volfs> 512K 512K 0B 100% /.vol
    automount -nsl [182] 0B 0B 0B 100% /Network
    automount -fstab [198] 0B 0B 0B 100% /automount/Servers
    automount -static [198] 0B 0B 0B 100% /automount/static
    /dev/disk1s1 466G 463G 2.4G 99% /Volumes/wd-usb-250
in my case the last disk is a WD mybook that I called "wd-usb-250"
now, in the finder, unmount the disk and make sure nothing is accessing it...
notice that the computer thinks that the disk is connected via the path:
    /dev/disk1s1
VERIFY THAT THIS IS THE SAME FOR YOU.. IF NOT THEN USE THE APPROPRIATE DRIVE..
this next step will go and write zero's to the whole drive.. if you are not so adventures you could just read from the entire disk.. if there are major problems then the read will not work either.
SO: to write in the terminal do the following: THIS WILL KILL THE DISK YOU ARE TESTING... INSURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING...
NOTICE HOW IN THE COMMAND BELOW I HAVE /DEV/DISK1 NOT /DEV/DISK1S1.
    TRUNCATE YOUR DEVICE ACCORDINGLY...
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/disk1 bs=16m
let it run till it either quits because of a i/o error or says it reached the end of the device.. if it reached the end of the device the device just had zero written to it..
it at the end will tell you how many 16Mb chunks of zero it wrote.. (this is assuming that your disk is a even multiple of 16Mb).
now to test that the device actually works, we can read the whole thing. by issuing the following command in the terminal.
    dd if=/dev/disk1 | hexdump -C
you should get an output that looks like this (with the records being changed to be the size of your disk divided into 16 Mb chunks...:
    00000000 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 |................|

    1+0 records out

  • Error Code -36 writing to external drives

    Hello all,
I was working in Final Cut Pro with a project, and I updated to 10.5.7 (dumb, I know). The next time I tried to open my project, it returned the message "The project is unreadable, or may be too new for this version of Final Cut."
    I restarted the computer,
    trashed preferences from Username>Library>Preferences>com.apple.finalcutpro.plist,
attempted to open backup files of the project (stored on my Macintosh HD, when the working project files are stored on a different internal media drive),
connected my laptop (running 10.5.6) and moved the project file (and backups) to the laptop, and attempted to open with it,
attempted to connect external drives to move the project files, and try from the laptop that way and I started receiving two errors: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'Test_movie.mov' could not be read or written. (Error code -36), or another error about file names being too long.
I booted to the OSX disk, and ran disk utility, repairing all internal drives, and repairing disk permissions for my OSX drive.
    I tried firewire 400 & 800.
I formatted the external drives, and still received the message (actually, after formatting, the message changed from the "names too long" to the "Error Code -36" I listed above).
I don't know what else I can try. Older FCP projects as well as all types of documents and images seem to open just fine. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

I was getting the same "-36" error while trying to backup to a Lacie firewire external drive.
I had a lot of people telling me to re-format, erase, reinstall, run utility programs ... yada, yada, yada.
First off, test to see if it is the connection type (firewire). I reconnected the offending external drive via USB, restarted the drive and ... BINGO! ... all transfers went perfectly.
Once i knew it was the firewire connection and not the drive itself i simply unplugged my iSight camera (the only other firewire device connected to my machine), reconnected my external drive via firewire and the problem is now corrected.
Firewire buses seem to be very finicky things ... i would suggest eliminating all firewire devices from the machine (except, of course, the external drive you're trying to transfer to) and see if the problem goes away.
Like i said, i simply unplugged my iSight camera and the transfer to my external drive went perfect and my transfer rates went from an average of 4MB/sec to over 19MB/sec.
P.S. BTW - prior to the error and after i corrected the error by unplugging the iSight camera, my internal and external drives all checked out 100% on Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro.

  • Is writing to flash drive always in "mass USB storage mode"?

I am trying to display JPEGs on my HDTV using a MEDIAGATE M2TV 1080P Media Player. I have written JPEG files to a flash drive and connected the flash drive to the M2TV Player, which doesn't recognize the USB flash drive. The M2TV manual says that only "mass USB storage mode is supported". Are there different modes of storage? What do I get from my mini? Also I assume that my file system is HFS+. Correct? Thanks for any help.
    Owen

Mediagate are the people to ask if things aren't working. The questions should be about the partition table (Apple has a couple) of your flash drive (possibly the brand) and the format. (In-camera flash storage has, as you read in the Wikipedia, it's own, unique partition table.) Flash drives probably come from the box with no partition table, but only one partition (volume) formatted in FAT32. This default is rarely changed by people; so that should have worked.
The question is how to transfer your JPEG photos from a Mac hard drive to a flash drive. Only now is it occurring to me that they may just mean their box captures JPEG files and transfers then to your Mac's USB port in USB MSC protocol, not USB PTP.
My ignorance may have confused the issue more. I last studied JPEG when it was released . There was room in the file for EXIF data. However, I doubt they anticipated GPS data and more, which Macs could interpret as metadata (as they do 'keywords'), and require USB PTP protocol to transfer. Well, this is wrong.
I borrowed a JPEG photo with a huge EXIF file, containing GPS data, and changed the suffix to .TXT, opened it in TextEdit, saved it, and dragged this non-photo file (using, presumably, USB MSC protocol) to a flash drive formatted HFS. I then changed the suffix to .JPG and opened it with the Finder. Its size hadn't changed, and its EXIF data hadn't changed. So, PTP is a mystery to me: I don't know what advantages it offers, though I choose it on cameras. Perhaps Mediagate can explain it, since it's the preferred protocol for transferring photos.
If you really need to copy a photo to a flash drive in USB MSC protocol, you can always change the suffix to .TXT and back. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can help. (I'm unfamiliar with your device.)
    Best of luck.

  • Why am I getting disk full error writing to usb drive?

I am trying to save my altered images on an USB drive. I keep getting an error message "disk full".
    I am using Photoshop version 7 on a Windows 7 64bit.

Another likely source of problem, test each drive individually first before you create your RAID, make sure they all show near identical performance in benchmark testing, and they are the same firmware.
Even zeroing the drives and comparing times for how long it takes can give some indication. AMUG and Barefeats probably have some reviews, benchmarks, and links to various test utilities.
Sonnet recommends that if you use WD drives that they be RE/RE2 and not SE series.
You can find even other brand models where drives vary enough to be an issue and cause a drive to time out on an I/O request.

  • Reading / writing a MAC drive on a PC - how to?

Could somebodybody please tell me how to access the information and write on a MAC drive (external USB, MAC formatted) on a PC?

To share data between your Mac OS X and Windows partitions:
When you’re using Windows, you can open and view files on the Mac OS X partition. To modify a
file, copy it to your Windows partition.
If you can’t see your Mac OS X partition when you’re using Windows, update Boot Camp.
    Upgrading Boot Camp
When you’re using Mac OS X, you can view and open files on your Windows partition. If the
Windows partition uses the MS-DOS (FAT) format, you also can modify files on your Windows
partition. Otherwise, copy a file to your Mac OS X partition to modify it.
To see the format for your Windows partition, select it in the Finder, choose File > Get Info, click
the disclosure triangle next to General, and look at the Format field.
You can format an external disk so you can use it with both Mac OS X and Windows. For more
information, open Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder) and search for
    “formatting a disk for Windows.

  • HT1151 FireWire and USB issue - writing to external drives stalls

I've started having a problem with external attached drives both USB and Firewire.
Any operation that attempts to write large ammounts of data over those prots simply stalls at some point in time, for instance TimeMachine or 4GB iso
I've followed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1151 but have not been able to get to working solution.
All drives tested are working correctly on another MBP machine, I can copy few GB of information easily and speedy
I've attempted to use clear user account, getting same failure
Drive is allways detected when plugged in  under all accounts I have tried.
Same problems I have expirienced on Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion, I'm using mid 2010 15" MBP
Question is what log files should one examine in attempt to troublshoot the problem?

  • Writing to windows drive from osx?

Hi there, just got my macbookpro, and love it.
I made a windows partition, alocated 15 gigs, what i was wondering is; is there an equivelent to the 'macdrive' wich allowes you to read/write to Fat32 drives while in windows. Is there anything that will let me write to the NTFS partition from the osx side of things?
    thanks for your help.
    TT.

NTFS is read-only to OS X. There is no software currently that allows a Mac running OS X to write to an NTFS formatted drive. If you format the Windows drive FAT32 then you can read-write from both Windows and OS X.
MacDrive allows Windows to read-write Mac formatted drives.

  • Error -36 when reading/writing with firewire drives (400 & 800)

This is only happening when I connect the drives to my G5, but the drives work fine on my MacBook Pro. I first thought I had a problem with my drives, but then when they worked on my laptop I figured it must be a problem with my G5. One of the drives is a smartdisk firelite drive connected via firewire to the front of my G5, the other is a G-Drive connected via FW 800 in the back of my machine.
Any ideas of what I need to do on my G5 to fix this issue?
    Thanks!

    Hi-
The error is an I/O error. One possible cause is low power on the firewire bus, or, the drives require more power than is available. Placing a powered hub between the G5 and the drive may be the solution.

  • Re-writing a flash drive.

I know this topic must have come up, but I could not find the exact question or answer I was seeking.   I've had this problem since I've had an Apple (one year).   It seems that with Windows, I could re-write to a flash drive multiple times, never had to format, etc.   With my MacBook Pro, I can delete a file, BUT it does not give me extra space.  I know flash drives are cheap now, but ---- isn't there a way to reuse the space???   I've gone into disk-utility and done everything possible to do there, but the available space on the flash remains the same.  Thanks.

Flash drives work on Apple computers exactly like they do on Windows computers. You must have a permission or format problem where the computer is not able to delete the files.

Thank you for taking the time to post those links to informative articles.
In relation to the first article entitled "Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck"
I can confirm that i was not able to start in safe mode but was able to boot up in recovery mode and run disk utility. The only one i hadn't tried is fsck.  Please correct me if I am wrong, but if from what I understand by the article, this is to be used if I could not run disk utility, with which I have been able to do and to repair both the disk and permissions. But again, if I've missed the obvious from that article please correct me.
Te second article entitled "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" identifies troubleshooting that should be carried out in safe mode. However I am unfortunately unable to start in safe mode and have not been able to progress past the apple logo since this problem started.
Thank you for both links and for taking the time to share. If though I have missed something more significant in this regard I would appreciate your feedback.
    Many thanks

  • RDX drive -- terrible transfer rate (writing to drive). Is there any way to speed it up?

I've tried both drag and drop and the Robocopy command to copy files to a RDX drive (under Win 7 home and pro). It starts off fast anough (25MB/sec) but shortly slows down to something like 1.5 MB/sec.  Just 35GB takes well more than 2 hours to copy.  And of course if there are many files involved it just gets worse.
Are there any tricks for speeding up writing to the drive?

Yes. You can download the Firefox installer and copy the file to an USB stick or other medium and install Firefox from that drive.
You can find all Firefox versions here: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
