Computer freezes during sync

I tried to sync my ipod today and when I plug it into the computer,
the computer completely freezes. The mouse freezes. The only way to un-freeze
the computer is to turn off the computer. Alt-Ctl Delete will not shut off the computer. I have to unplug it. I tried it at least 5 times and still
nothing. I-tunes was working fine. The Ipod still works with my headphones.
Any suggestions??

Welcome to the club...I just had this problem and ended up returning my "new" refurbished 3g ipod (15gb) to the apple store for another one. My 3g ipod would lock up itunes and then the mac after loading about 300-700 songs out of 2500. I am currently awaiting my replacement's replacement.

  • My 4th gen ipod won't backup after it froze during a software update to 4.3.5. I had to cancel the backup at the start of the update and now it won't let me backup to my computer, freezes during backup or says my backup is corrupted.

I pressed 'X' during a backup after it froze during an update to software 4.3.5 and now it won't let me backup on my computer. Does anyone have any ideas? It either freezes during backup or says my 'backup is corrupted' or 'I cannot backup on my computer'. I have had to abort quite a few attempted backups since the initial problem, which I think has made it worse. I have already tried restoring my ipod, deleting the aborted backup from my preferences/devices in itunes and deleting it from my user/appdata/etc on my PC hard drive. Any ideas what to try next?

After hours of frustration I eventually decided to restore. I lost my apps, but i didn't have many and was able to reinstall them for free. During the restore it updated my ipod to the latest software 4.3.5, which i think may have caused the initial problem, but the backup issue remains. Sometimes it stops me from syncing and other times it allows me to skip the backup, but still says that i can't backup on my computer. I'm worried that it has done something to my computer as it took me six hours to do a Bullguard scan, which only normally takes about an hour. The scan didn't come up with any viruses, but it stalled at system32 for ages. The only other thing that i can think of is that a demo CD I uploaded may have caused a problem. iTunes couldn't find a track listing for it but gave me a few different options. i thought I had to choose one to continue, so did that then changed the track details to the correct tracks. I'm now worried that may have introduced an issue or caused a glitch in iTunes. How paranoid am I sounding?

  • Itunes and ipod freeze during sync

    hello,
firstly, i would like to thank all you kind souls who post to this forum with very helpful suggestions. you have helped me with many past difficulties.
my present issue concerns transferring songs from itunes to my ipod (4th generation). here's the story:
on friday, my ipod started acting funny (skipping songs, etc.). by saturday, it would no longer do anything (folder with !, resetting did not help). this had happened to me before so i did not freak out and figured i just had to restore (that had worked the first time around). however, when i plugged in my ipod to my computer (powerbook g4, just three weeks old), it was not recognised and i was prompted to initialize the disk. i then came to this forum and read pretty much everything related to this kind of problem. countless resets, erases, partitions, etc., later, i was able to get the ipod software back on the ipod. it seemed all normal but there was no music on it (makes sense since i'd restored it). but then...when i plugged in my ipod to sync it with itunes, it would freeze at a given song (not always the same one, sometimes 31 songs into it, sometimes 500). i came back to this forum and read that i should reset my ports, which i did. didn't help, the sync still freezes both the ipod and itunes.
so that's where i'm at: i have the ipod software on the ipod, but i can't sync it with itunes (i.e. i can't get my music onto it). my brother thinks i have bad blocks (or sectors). is this a possibility? the ipod does make some noise (not sure whether it's the infamous clicking...).
    so here are my questions:
    1) is there anything i haven't done yet that could get the ipod to sync with itunes?
assuming i have done everything and the problem is with my ipod's hard disk:
    2) would a program like disk warrior potentially be able to fix the ipod?
    3) would it cost me less to have the ipod serviced than to buy disk warrior?
    4) is there somekind of open-source or freeware disk repair utility that could perhaps repair my ipod's disk?
thanks for reading and i really look forward to any suggestions.
    gen
p.s. the ipod's more than a year old, so no longer under warranty.

Okay, I got it to work tonight...
My U2 iPod would freeze while syncing. I restored and tried to sync and it would freeze on different song #'s. All the while I heard a clicking sound coming from the drive that I never noticed before. It would just click once in a while, not repeatedly.
My fix: (a version of the carpet drop) While the iPod was on and spinning, I held it tight with my right hand, facing me and smacked it's side into the palm of my left hand, simulating the amount of force that it would incurr from a waist-high drop onto carpet.
Now, this force was sheer approximation, being that it would be too time consuming and difficult to calculate this exact amount of force. I mean, my waist may be higher/lower than the original carpet-dropper, and not to mention the plushness of the carpet! Who knows if he did it on Shenandoah Shagg or maybe just some Bermuda Burr Rug?!
By the way, the problem started after being left out in the car on recent cold nights... hmmmm, my iPod thinks me a jerk.
Anyways, here are some previous attempts at fixing my situation (in no particular order):
    1) restored from 5 different iPod updates (2004-11-15, 2005-02-22, 2005-06-26, 2005-09-23, 2005-11-17)
    2) tried to fix with Disk Utility
    3) tried to fix with Tech Tool Pro
    4) tried to fix with Disk Warrior
    5) tried to initialize multiple time (even writing zeroes)
    6) manual sync

I am trying to resync all of my songs & videos from Itunes to a 160GB ipod. When it gets to about 4GB, the ipod freezes and sync stops. I have tried resetting the Ipod, but it doesn't help. Any ideas?

I having a similar problem. Sometimes while my ipod is syncing or when I am deleting something, it freezes. I cannot close it at all. It doesn't effect the rest of the computer. I cannot get rid of it unless I restart the computer and I can't keep doing it, its becoming an annoyance. I've reinstalled 4 times and it doesn't seem to be working. PLEASE HELP!

  • Computer freezes while syncing

I am trying to sync my Touch to my laptop for the first time. At the top of my iTunes screen in states that it is optimizing photos and beneath that it states a number out of 3750. My entire computer freezes when it reaches 835 of 3750. I had to actually take the battery out of my laptop in order to unfreeze it and restart.
I've tried twice now to sync and it froze at the exact same spot both times.
    What do I do?

  • FIX FOR:computer freezes during install of Leopard on a G4 MDD w/ ATI x800!

I had problems with freezing during installation of Tiger & Leopard on my G4 MDD. It took some trouble shooting, but when I installed Tiger I found out that the freeze was from the video card I had installed, an ATI x800 xt 256mb AGP video card. I do not know why this card freezes the installation process, but I found a way to get the installation to complete without freezing. I took an old ATI PCI video card, installed it in an empty PCI slot, connected monitor to PCI card, and then installed Tiger with no problems. After install I hooked the monitor back up to the AGP ATI card and it worked great. So when my G4 froze with the Leopard installation I did the same thing, switched to an old PCI video card and Leopard installed with no problems whatsoever, then I switched back to AGP card after install. I hope this helps someone.

  • Computer freezes during startup

My Mac book pro. Freezes during startup.  Spinning wheel goes for about 15 seconds, then just stops.  Any ideas?

Ok, I tried that and it didn't help, but thanks for the suggestion anyway because device drivers are always a pain in this.
Then I started looking for log file changes because I suspected that something (related) ought to be logged about this nagging bug. The witch hunt directed me towards the google updater agent -- whatever -- that got stuck on bringing chrome to the latest level.
I read all sort of incompatibilities between google chrome and macbooks, this could be another one. I downloaded the latest version of chrome manually, overwrote the existing implementation of chrome and the freeze-up seemed to vanish.
    Not so nice this all.

  • Ipod freezes during sync then error that it cant read file...

A little pre-info... I have owned a black 30gb 5th gen (video) Ipod for a couple of years now. I plug it in fine, my computer recognizes it fine, Itunes works fine with it... everything works great.
I just bought another Ipod off ebay that is exact as mine except white- auction states the Ipod works fine, seller has awesome feedback, etc.. I bought this for a gift for my sister for Christmas. It is second hand, so warranty is expired.
I plug it in the computer, and first tried to transfer some normal text data via explorer. I had put this same data on my own black Ipod with no issues, words fine. The white? Lo and behold I get that "Data Cycle Redundancy" error during copy. My experience is that that has always meant that the original file is messed up, not the destination its being copied too... but in this case I know the original file(s) were/are ok.
And the Ipod freezes. So I safely unplug, and try to hard reset it. It wouldnt for a bit, and I noticed the Ipod was rather warm (but this might be because it was frozen for several minutes with the backlight still on as well). Finally I get it to reset. Same stuff happens again, again its hard to reset.
So then I decide screw it, forget adding the stuff via explorer, Ill just try to get the music on my computer at least, over via Itunes, after I first restore the Ipod.
Itunes opens... recognizes the Ipod... I go to copy music, and it copies until it essentially 'freezes'. I tried many times - its not a bad file because the same file would copy the other times Id try. It would freeze on any random file, during the write process.
Then Itunes comes up with this error:
"the ipod cannot be synced. the required file cannot be found"
I dont think this is referring to my files trying to be copied, they werent deleted or moved from their location since importing into the Itunes library. Im wondering if theres a system type file on the Ipod that Itunes speaks to as it transfers...and when the Ipod freezes... hence it cant be found...
At the same time I get this error from Itunes, I get a Windows XP bubble pop up that says:
"Delayed Write Failed - Windows was unable to save all the data for the file x. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
Now again, my computer/windows is NOT the issue. Its the Ipod.
All the advice I have searched says to fix things on my computer. That includes that Apple support page in regards to those errors - it points the finger at my USB ports, etc - and thats simply not the case. If it was, my other Ipod wouldnt be working either - nor would my flash drives.
    Its the white Ipod.
I saw one site suggest to format the Ipod via Windows first, then do the Itunes restore, but the Ipod froze and Windows couldnt format.
I went into Device Manager and compared the two Ipod settings, both share the same settings. They are not set on 'enable write cache'.
I have tested the HD via Diagnostics, and the BL blinked after the test, showing the HD passed... so right now I can only think of three things... a bad logic board perhaps, or the Ipod system files are corrupt somehow no matter how many times I do the restore... should I revert to an older update; is that even possible. Or the HD is bad after all and its just being missed in the test.
So now... I need help. Am I missing something important? Is it a simple fix... a corrupt file thats freezing the Ipod somewhere - or did I get a bad Ipod from the seller.
Its so close to Christmas, if there was some simple fix(instead of it being a bad HD) I could fix it myself, Id rather do that than go through the hassle of returns/refunds. Not to mention, its always a gamble how the seller will react. Will they help, or say its not a problem on their end and try to screw me... then Ill have to go through Paypal for reimbursement and that takes 90 days at least...

I wish I had good news but all I have is information. I have access to 4 5th gen ipods. 2 black 30s and 1 white 30 and 1 black 80. The one white and one of the blacks work and have worked flawlessly for the past two years. The other black 30 and 80 started having the issue mentioned here some time after upgrading to iTunes 8. I tried to lowlevel format the iPod drive to fix any issues and that didn't cure the problem. I bought a MacBook a couple of months ago and restored my ipod to Mac format and low and behold it would accept files again! However it wouldn't let me fill the ipod beyond about halfway, this was on both ipods. Now the ipods have become slowly less and less fillable. Seems like syncing rather than putting the songs on manually seems to help, but again its getting worse all the time. (the two ipods that don't have any problems belong to my girls and the problem ones belong to my son and i) <- Grasping at straws I know, but my son and I are constantly changing the songs, playlists, videos and such.
When I bought my Mac the guys at the Apple store were shocked that I was having this problem and practically begged me to bring it in so they could see what it wrong with it. I will post an update when i do that.

  • Itunes Freezes during Sync on 3G & 3GS with Vista 64 & 7-64 all USB ports

To start. I originally had an iPhone 3G over a year ago on this desktop running Windows Vista 64Bit. My phone was able to sync with the PC for about a month and stopped being able to sync. I received many error numbers and put support tickets in with no avail. I then upgraded to an iPhone 3GS. Still under Windows Vista 64Bit and could not Sync my phone. It consistantly froze during the sync process. I tried all USB ports on my PC. People said to try restoring your iPhone and iTunes. I tried that and then got stuck on my restore. I had a broken phone until I was able to sync with my laptop.
I now have the same desktop Acer AM3641-EQ8200A but I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I have always had the latest iTunes version, and tried 32 bit and 64 bit versions of iTunes. I still cannot successfully sync my iPhone. If it sits there long enough it will freeze up, start to freeze my computer etc. I decided to try again last night after I got a new USB cord and had the same issue.
In addition, my girlfriends iPod will not sync to the desktop either.
I have been stuck doing syncs on my Netbook for over a year now. Optimization of 3,000+ photos is horrific on it, but it works.
People say to get an external USB that is self powered. Why should I have to do this and chance frying my PC?
The deal is this, the phones won't sync with the desktop but will sync with my netbook also running windows 7 ultimate. All USB drivers are up to date on both.
I have tried Reformatting and Installing Windows. Reinstalling itunes. Updating all drivers. Tried different versions of iTunes. I first called Apple Retail, they had no answer. I wrote apple a lengthy letter with all the Error codes, they said they would call me even though my warranty over the phone support was expired. Never got a call back after they heard my problem.
What can I do to rectify this? I am not the only one out there.

    UPDATE:
After putting a USB 2 card in my mac, all worked properly. The problem seems to be using USB 1.1.
    This is really tragic because:
    + many Macs don't have USB 2,
+ it is very difficult to find out out if USB 2 exists on your computer (why are no USB 1 or 2 details spelled out in system profiler ?),
+ there are no warnings as to the sort of issues that would be coming up with USB 1.1 (yes I know the specs clearly says USB 2, but it looks like it was working at first),
+ there are no spelled warning by the system (after all, the iTune, iPod combination could detect easily that the incorrect USB standard is being used and warn the user),
+ there does not seem to be specific advantages to use USB 2 (like speed) as the syncing peaked at 6MB/s, a speed achievable with USB 1.1
Come on Apple you can do better than this !

  • Itunes Freeze during sync

    Hi there,
Im operating Windows Vista on a Dell Inspiron e1505 and a 5th generation Ipod 80gb Classic with the latest version of Itunes(9.0.2). I've encountered this problem numerous times and have searched many different locations for an answer. Hopefully someone can provide an answer, or tell me I'm out of luck.
With the amount of music I have I don't have the capacity on my Hard Drive to store it all. Therefore, I choose to manually sync my ipod. However, as I'm syncing, whenever I near 4000 songs on my ipod, Itunes freezes indefinitely, at which point I am forced to disconnect the ipod only to see that all of the music is wiped clean. This occurs during the period where itunes is "determining gapless playback information" of the songs I have just chosen to sync. This occurs whether I have chosen to sync 1 song at a time or 250 songs. The deciding factor is the nearing of 4000 songs.
I've looked around and from what I can determine the answer may lie in the fact that not enough of the "computer's power" is directed to the syncing process; too many background applications perhaps. I've tried turning off anything unnecessary and I run with minimal programs.
Thanks in advance for any help, I'll be happy to try to answer any questions.

That sounds like it might be a library file issue with your iTunes.
If you recreate your iTunes library, are you able to get past the 4000 song barrier when you sync?

  • ITunes freezing during sync, "Delayed Write Failed"

I've been having a really annoying issue with my iPod Classic 160GB for about two months now. Whenever I try to sync my iPod with my iTunes library, iTunes suddenly freezes completely during the sync. The problem usually appears when the sync is at around 30GB out of 40GB, but it can also appear at other points during the sync.
Sometimes, when iTunes freezes, an error message appears in the right corner of my screen saying, and I'll do my best to translate it from Norwegian:
    "Delayed Write/writing failed"
"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file G:\iPodControlArtworkF10281.ithmb. The data was lost. This error may be caused by a failure on your hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file somewhere else"
The freeze leaves me with no choice but to plug my iPod out of the computer when it says on the iPod screen that I'm not supposed to, and this probably isn't good for it.
When I plug my iPod back in, the files that should have been synced up until the delayed write error appeared and iTunes froze and that should have been audio and blue, has turned into orange and "other" on the main iPod page in iTunes.
I've tried everything from the 5 Rs to even calling iPod support where they told me that this was an Apple software issue, and that it had nothing to do with either my iPod or computer. They also told me that I could solve the issue by rolling back to iTunes 7,7 until an update to solve the issue was available. I tried this, and the same problem appeared. I tried to roll back to iTunes 7,6 as well, but no luck there either.
Now I'm getting sort of worried that my one year warranty will expire and I'll be stuck with an iPod that has a software with a really annoying problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I am having the EXACT same problem trying to sync my new 80GB Classic with itunes on a Macbook.
I restored and updated to latest ipod firmware. No change.
I updated iTunes to 8.0. No change.
I updated OS X to 10.5.5. No change.
Oddly enough, iTunes freezes to the point where it must be force quit. But it will not quit even then. I have to restart just to get back to a point where itunes will open again.
    Help!!

  • Help: iPod classic freezing during sync, can't figure out  if this is an iPod or iTunes issue....

I have a 160gb iPod thats barely a year old, been working fine. Earlier today I was putting some music onto my iTunes when I got a software update for iTunes, 10.6.1. I downloaded the update and installed it and what not. I connected my iPod and noticed that it wasnt synching and iTunes froze. I put my computer on hibernate just to disconnect my iPod. I disconnected it and suddenly all my music vanished. I connect my iPod back and again, it won't synch & iTunes freezes. I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, same problems was happening. I tried uninstalling the updated iTunes and installed the last version to see if that would work. Still nothing resolved.
I ended up restoring my iPod somehow so that it connects to iTunes. I thought I figured it out, it was synching with iTunes and I started the process of putting all 7000 songs back, but during the synch it freezes at some point. I categorize my music by artists, alphabetically. The synch freezes exactly once I get to the letter D. So I have about 1100 songs. I'm going to apple tomorrow to see if they know *** is goin on. Anybody have suggestions tho? This is ****** me the **** off.

First off thanks to all the views and no replies, lots of help....... :sarcasm ended::
anyways, I went to the apple store and they told me the hard drive in the iPod was damaged. If you drop it one too many times, work out with it etc, it takes a tole on the iPod. The hard drive couldnt write the files being transferred through the sync.
So basically, I bought a new iPod and I paid about $120 less.

  • Computer Freezes during Playback, Render and Scrubbing in Premiere Pro CS5.5

OS - Windows Ultimate 7, 64-bit, Service Pack 1 (up to date)
Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium (with all updates)
My problem occurs only in Premiere Pro CS5.5 and not with any other Adobe programs, including After Effects.  Playback, scrubbing, or rendering in my Premiere Pro timeline causes the computer to freeze.  When it freezes I cannot move the mouse, I cannot use the keyboard, there is no automatic shutdown, and there is no BSOD.  The computer just freezes, forever, and needs to be shutdown manually.
This problem began a few weeks ago, only happening occassionaly.  Recently the problem has escalated to the point that I cannot use Premiere Pro CS5.5 for more than 30 seconds before it freezes.
I have several different Premiere Pro projects saved to a 1TB WD Black Caviar HDD.  In some of the projects I am using Cineform converted .mov files and in others I am using the raw(compressed) footage directly from a Canon DSLR.  This dedicated harddrive has 60% free space.
Mercury PLayback Acceleration is enabled, and I have been successfully using Premiere and the rest of the creative suite intensively since October 2011 with absolutely NO problems.  I cannot remember the system ever crashing once during this time period, until now, which is remarkable.  All software on my computer is legitimate, and there are no third party codecs installed.
What can I do to fix this problem?  All help is extremely appreciated.  THANK-YOU!
    Drew Norton

Thank you, Harm I will do this.  In response to the video card being a possible cause of the problem,  I moved forward and downloaded Furmark to test it.  When running Furmark the program crashes.  It gets going on the test and crashes, and apparently according to other websites this means my graphics card is not running at capacity.  Do any of you have experience with this?
If it is as clean cut as a busted graphics card I would be very excited to know.
