FIX FOR:computer freezes during install of Leopard on a G4 MDD w/ ATI x800!
I had problems with freezing during installation of Tiger & Leopard on my G4 MDD. It took some trouble shooting, but when I installed Tiger I found out that the freeze was from the video card I had installed, an ATI x800 xt 256mb AGP video card. I do not know why this card freezes the installation process, but I found a way to get the installation to complete without freezing. I took an old ATI PCI video card, installed it in an empty PCI slot, connected monitor to PCI card, and then installed Tiger with no problems. After install I hooked the monitor back up to the AGP ATI card and it worked great. So when my G4 froze with the Leopard installation I did the same thing, switched to an old PCI video card and Leopard installed with no problems whatsoever, then I switched back to AGP card after install. I hope this helps someone.

WHAT CAUSES FOR AN APPLICATION TO FREEZE DURING INSTALL?
What causes for an application to freeze during install? and how do I fix it
helloWorld pretty much said it all.
When I'm looking for problems like that nothing beats a good trace file. Also don't dismiss the idea of programmer stupidity (of the one that developed the app), I've ran across code where exceptions where caught and nothing done about it, just let thing run merrily along again. The cause is usually farther back in the trace than the point it hangs or appears to start having problems. -
EXS 24 crashes when I load any sample. Is there a fix for this, perhaps an install / reinstall option as such? Any help would be very grateful.
I purchased the iMac second hand and is in very tidy condition only used for production. I'm not totally clued up on the Mac side if things as I was a windows user for years. Please be gentle ! :)Thank you. I figured it out right before I heard from you. Running the OCR before the redaction made it work correctly.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question.
Make it a great day.

I pressed 'X' during a backup after it froze during an update to software 4.3.5 and now it won't let me backup on my computer. Does anyone have any ideas? It either freezes during backup or says my 'backup is corrupted' or 'I cannot backup on my computer'. I have had to abort quite a few attempted backups since the initial problem, which I think has made it worse. I have already tried restoring my ipod, deleting the aborted backup from my preferences/devices in itunes and deleting it from my user/appdata/etc on my PC hard drive. Any ideas what to try next?
After hours of frustration I eventually decided to restore. I lost my apps, but i didn't have many and was able to reinstall them for free. During the restore it updated my ipod to the latest software 4.3.5, which i think may have caused the initial problem, but the backup issue remains. Sometimes it stops me from syncing and other times it allows me to skip the backup, but still says that i can't backup on my computer. I'm worried that it has done something to my computer as it took me six hours to do a Bullguard scan, which only normally takes about an hour. The scan didn't come up with any viruses, but it stalled at system32 for ages. The only other thing that i can think of is that a demo CD I uploaded may have caused a problem. iTunes couldn't find a track listing for it but gave me a few different options. i thought I had to choose one to continue, so did that then changed the track details to the correct tracks. I'm now worried that may have introduced an issue or caused a glitch in iTunes. How paranoid am I sounding?

IMac freezes after installing snow leopard
I recently installed Snow Leopard in my 5 year old iMac. It had functioned flawlessly until that point. Now it freezes constantly. The only way to get out is to shut it down and do a safe reboot. Another difficulty is that I am not that computer literate. So any responses need to be formed simplistically please.
See this FAQ which may help: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html
Also, how much memory do you have? 1GB is the minimum, but more is better.
How much free space do you have on your hard disk? Generally speaking, 10% or more of the total is good, with a minimum 5GB. Less than that can really crimp OS X and slow down performance. -
NetInstall - Grey screen after logging in for user created during install
I am creating a NetInstall of 10.8 for mass deployment in my workplace. I am currently having difficulty with a user account that was created by a script that runs in place of the Setup Assistant.
I am trying to skip the Setup Assistant, and as such, the script touches the /var/db/.AppleSetupDone file (which doesn't exist at this point).
This works, with the installation progressing straight on to the login screen where the user 'administrator' has been created, and is available for login.
However, when the user logs in, they are presented with a grey screen & the mouse cursor. No dock, desktop, no finder menu bar.
I am at a loss as to what is going wrong as this had worked perfectly fine in the developer preview.
The script is as below: (certain sections have been removed for security purposes)
Any pointers would be much appreciated.

(1) You cannot run the installer program while booted into your primary partition; you must boot into the DVD. Restart the computer while holding down the C key until the DVD boots.
This isn't true. The retail Snow Leopard DVD is designed to start the install procedure while started up normally. When you do this, after performing some checks on the target partition it writes some pre-install files to it before restarting automatically from the DVD. This speeds up the install procedure.
(2) You cannot install Snow Leopard on this computer from a DVD that came with another computer; you must use, as it were, a free-standing commercial Snow Leopard installer DVD.
The exception is, as Xian Rinpoche correctly surmised, a Mac model released after the currently available retail Snow Leopard DVD became available. The newest Macs require a later version of the OS than what is included on the retail DVD, which is why it won't work with the new i5 & i7 models. (See Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than that which came with your Mac for more about this.)
As a general rule, use either the installer that came with the Mac on its grey system discs or a retail disc released after that Mac model was released. You can also refer to this handy chart of the OS version that ships with each Mac model. -

Time Warner Roadrunner Dialer Fix for MAC X 10.5.1 - Leopard Modem
RR Dialer FIX:
There is a fix for dialing up with MAC OS 10.5.1 (Leopard). The Road Runner dialer is not compatible and will not work at all, but
you can use the MAC Networking to configure the Mac dial up capability. Open Network Preferences, select:
Modem...Advanced...PPP... settings-configuration...
check off: send ppp echo & check use tcp header compression under Terminal script ... select Script.TXT.
And then click on connect... this will work ! HTH, NY2LA36
======Thanks for the your dialer solution. It worked for me after I entered my email address for Account Name. I suspect that not everyone who finds your procedure will realize that they need to make that entry since it isn't the account name.

Computer freezes during startup
My Mac book pro. Freezes during startup. Spinning wheel goes for about 15 seconds, then just stops. Any ideas?
Ok, I tried that and it didn't help, but thanks for the suggestion anyway because device drivers are always a pain in this.
Then I started looking for log file changes because I suspected that something (related) ought to be logged about this nagging bug. The witch hunt directed me towards the google updater agent -- whatever -- that got stuck on bringing chrome to the latest level.
I read all sort of incompatibilities between google chrome and macbooks, this could be another one. I downloaded the latest version of chrome manually, overwrote the existing implementation of chrome and the freeze-up seemed to vanish.
Not so nice this all. -
Sparc 5 freezes during install
As the subject says I have a sparc 5 that freezes
during an interactive install of Solaris 8 4/01.
It is inconsistent, and the only way to unhang the machine
is power off (does not respond to stop-a).
Is there a way to tell what is going on?
Thanks,
A. J.Thanks...
Problem solved... it was a SIMM that wasn't seated properly.
The strange thing is, that I did test the memory using POST and also doing test-memory at the PROM level and those did not indicate any problem (on a hunch I reseated the memory...).

Microsoft Word for Mac Freezes During Time Machine Backup
Since upgrading to Lion, I have found that when Time Machine is performing a backup that word for Mac freezes. I have all software updates for both Mac and MS. Running on 17" MacBook Pro.
Any ideas?
This appears to be the same issue:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2403912?start=0&tstart=0
Thanks in advance. The Time Machine backup data on the network device is corrupt. The first thing you should do, if that's your only backup, is to make another complete backup to a locally attached storage device. One backup is never enough to be safe. Network backups are less reliable than local ones.
After that, hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
If you continue to get panics, erase the backup device. With an AirPort device, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the device again as a backup destination in the Time Machine preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.
If you still have problems after erasing the device, it should be replaced. -
On Leopard after running software update computer freezes during restart
Hi All,
I hope I am posting this in the right place. I have installed Leopard (brand new installation with formating the HD before install). It went lovely. Migrate all of my accounts and settings form my other HD. BTW that other HD was upgraded to Leopard they the upgrade feature of Leopard instal and had the same problem that I'm going to describe here. After installation was complete, I worked on my computer just fine for a few hours, restarted it a few time an it worked great. I've installed software updates (iTunes 7.5 QT7.3 etc...) at this point when my system requested a restart and I click "restart" button, the computer tried to restart and froze at the point when the screen went black but the tower never restarted. In fact after about a minute of system being frozen, all of the fans in the tower went blowing full force.
Now, here is the history. I've done the Leopard upgrade on my system HD a week before this happened and after downloading this software update had the same problem. Can not restart at all. The computer works fine for about 1 day and after that the system starts to slow down a lot.
I called Apple, they didn't know what that was. Went to Apple store, they check the hardware and... It's good. Was advised to reinstall the Leopard on "clean" HD with brand new installation rather then update. I did all this yesterday on my 2nd HD and as I've said above, it worked just fine until I've installed this update.
So, my question to you all. Did anyone else experienced this type of problem?
I'm still on hold wanting for Apple tech support to try and resolve this with them. I was just hoping that some of you may know this and may have a fix/advise for me.
Thank you in advance for your helpSame thing happened to me and I get the same error message. These are the programs that don't work

Computer Freezes during Playback, Render and Scrubbing in Premiere Pro CS5.5
CPU - Intel i7 980 3.33GHz
RAM - 12GB (6 x 2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600
PSU - 850watt Corsair
Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570
C: Drive - 600GB Velociraptor (with only program files stored on the drive)
OS - Windows Ultimate 7, 64-bit, Service Pack 1 (up to date)
Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium (with all updates)
My problem occurs only in Premiere Pro CS5.5 and not with any other Adobe programs, including After Effects. Playback, scrubbing, or rendering in my Premiere Pro timeline causes the computer to freeze. When it freezes I cannot move the mouse, I cannot use the keyboard, there is no automatic shutdown, and there is no BSOD. The computer just freezes, forever, and needs to be shutdown manually.
This problem began a few weeks ago, only happening occassionaly. Recently the problem has escalated to the point that I cannot use Premiere Pro CS5.5 for more than 30 seconds before it freezes.
I have several different Premiere Pro projects saved to a 1TB WD Black Caviar HDD. In some of the projects I am using Cineform converted .mov files and in others I am using the raw(compressed) footage directly from a Canon DSLR. This dedicated harddrive has 60% free space.
Mercury PLayback Acceleration is enabled, and I have been successfully using Premiere and the rest of the creative suite intensively since October 2011 with absolutely NO problems. I cannot remember the system ever crashing once during this time period, until now, which is remarkable. All software on my computer is legitimate, and there are no third party codecs installed.
What can I do to fix this problem? All help is extremely appreciated. THANK-YOU!
Drew NortonThank you, Harm I will do this. In response to the video card being a possible cause of the problem, I moved forward and downloaded Furmark to test it. When running Furmark the program crashes. It gets going on the test and crashes, and apparently according to other websites this means my graphics card is not running at capacity. Do any of you have experience with this?
If it is as clean cut as a busted graphics card I would be very excited to know. -
Hi, I have already checked to see that I meet the requirements in the instructions (and answers on similar questions). I am using a CD direct from Apple of the software (a copy of a 10.6.4 CD). Yet the install CD says it can't be installed on my computer and simply stops, its very vague about why.
>(a copy of a 10.6.4 CD). That's your problem. You got the wrong CD. Any system with 10.5.8 will not be able to use a 10.6.4 CD. The only 10.6 installer that will work with a 10.5.8 system (assuming it is Intel and 1 GB of RAM as G5 and G4 and G3 won't work), is the one with this label*
Anything with a different looking label is system specific only for the vintage Mac stated on the label that was released with the 10.6.x release stated on the label, or anythign with Upgrade, Dropin will not work on a 10.5.8 machine, unless that 10.5.8 machine was released during the 3 weeks prior to the August 28, 2009 release of Snow Leopard. OEM discs will not work unless Apple offered it directly to you stating it would for your Mac model and vintage Mac.
Contact AppleCare if you received the wrong disc from them.
Contact the person who gave you the disc and tell them it is the wrong disc otherwise.
You can buy a 10.6.3 retail disc with the above image if you have the system requirements for Snow Leopard from the Apple Store for $29.95. -
Fix for continuous reboot after installing Service Pack 3 in Windows XP
After contacting HP Technical Support and speaking to a supervisor we were able to solve the problem of Windows continuously rebooting after installing SP3. Here are the steps that fixed the problem with my HP Pavilion running on an AMD processor. The steps are actually fairly straight forward and easy....
Issue: The computer reboots continuously after installing Windows XP service pack 3
Computer reboots continuously after installing Windows XP service pack 3 on AMD systems. The problem is that with some configurations, SP3 causes the computer to crash during boot, and Windows XP, by default, is set up to automatically reboot when it crashes. That is why you end up in the endless rebooting scenario.
Cause:
On HP computers, the same Windows installation disc image for Intel processor based PC's is deployed for the AMD processor based computers as well. Because the original installation image for both Intel and AMD is the same, all have the intelppm.sys driver installed and running. That driver provides power management on Intel-based computers. On an AMD-based computer, amdk8.sys provides the same functionality for power management.
Symptoms:
Ordinarily, having intelppm.sys running on an AMD-based computer appears to cause no problems. However, on the first reboot after a Service Pack 3 installation, it causes a big problem. The computer either fails to boot, or crashes with a STOP error code of 0x0000007e.
You may not see the error code because the computer reboots too fast. In order to get the error message, you need to set an option during startup. To do so, open the windows advanced menu by tapping the f8 key on startup. Then select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" option.
Solution:
If you have an AMD-based computer, however, you do not need the intelppm.sys driver and can disable it. There are three methods in order to do this.
Step 1: Please try to log on the system in safe mode.
1. While using Safe mode open the command prompt.... Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt
Run the following command in the command prompt just like it's typed: sc config intelppm start= disabled
Step 2:
If the issue persists, please try to log on or boot the system in recovery console (refer to the web document)
2. Using recovery console:
If you booted into the recovery console, from a command prompt, type: disable intelppm
Step 3: Please check in registry.
3. Using windows registry:
1. Run regedit
2. Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3. From the File menu, select "Load hive"
4. Navigate to %systemdriver%\Windows\System32\Config on the dead system and select the file name System
5. Name it something you can remember, such as "horked"
6. Navigate to horked\ControlSet001\Services\IntelPPM
7. Double click the Start value and set it to 4
8. If you did what I did and completely messed things up by running a disk check previously, navigate to ControlSet001\Control\SessionManager. Open the BootExecute value and clear out the autochk entries.
9. Repeat steps 6-8 for the other control sets.
10. Reboot

For future reference: Service pack 3 Installation steps:
Before installing the service pack 3 update, please follow the steps listed above and save yourself much time and effort.
To uninstall service pack 3, I suggest that you uninstall it from add/remove programs.
Step 1:
Uninstall service pack 3 from add/remove programs:
1. Click Start.
2. Select Run.
3. Type appwiz.cpl in the run field.
4. Click OK.
5. Click change or remove programs.
6. Select the program -service pack 3 that you want to uninstall or remove.
7. Click Remove button.
8. It will pop up the message stating that "Are you sure you want to remove the programs".
9. Click Yes. It will help you to remove or uninstall the installed programs from add and remove programs.
Step 2: If the issue persists, I suggest you to perform system restore and then try to install the service pack 3 after performing the steps mentioned above in regards to removing the intelppm.sys Driver.

I hope this helps someone who is having this problem. It sure took me a minute to get it all figured out. :0)Still useful as of 12/30/11. Have ten Lenovo 5042 computers with downgrade licenses to run XP and have a ghosted image from another Lenovo 5042 having and Intel cpu. My target computers all have AMD cpus in them and the image would continuously reboot on
the AMD computers.
Used method 1 and it cleared the problem instantly, many thanks for the post and the time and effort it took to dig up the answer..
