Computer not powering down

Something interesting cropped up today - my iBook will not shut down using the normal method. I tried Apple>Shut Down>Shut Down, I tried Apple>Shut Down and then letting the count down expire, and lastly, when I hit the power button, I clicked on the Shut Down button there. No such luck. The only way to get it to turn off is to hold down the power button.
The only thing new is a SanDisk 1 gig flash drive "cruzer," but I was able to use the normal shut down routine last night after using the flash drive for the first time (and the flash drive has not been plugged in until after the boot up is completed). Nothing else has changed - no downloads since the last Office update about a week ago.

Hi,
Welcome to the Discussions.
Resetting the PMU should take care of it.

  • KM3M-V system's PSU not powering down ...

    Hi all,
I got a KM3M-V installed and working fine. But upon shutting down WindowsXP Pro /sp2, the mobo and CPU fan powers down, but the PSU fan remains running for hours ... and never stops.
    Any idea? Thx!

Get another PSU! I agree with Wonkanoby. The one you got is mostly meant for a Cube system of some kind, and the PSU has been discontinued, probably because it wont even power these. This is the closest to an amperes list I come:
    DC +3.3V +5V -5V +12V -12V +5V-SB COM PS-ON PW-OK
    OUTPUT 11.5/18.7A 16/13A 0.3A 11A 0.3A 2.0A RETURN REMOTE P.G.

Thanks Fedrik! I think I might just have to go this way ... I just want to make sure its not the mobo. But since its working fine as it is, except for the switching off issue, I might just go for a new mobo. In the meantime, I'll just power off the socket!

  • Computer Not Shutting Down

The last few days when I have gone to shut down my computer it won't shut down, it just keeps restarting itself.

yes it seems like mine started doing this when we had the last security update a few days ago.
I go to shut down and finder just spins and needs to be relaunched and then does nothing to shut down. All my applications now need to be quit before I can even do a shut down command. This is frustration for sure. Not even my automatic shutdown works, it always finds programs that won't allow the system to shut down.

  • Macintosh HD not powering down. Yours may be running 24 hrs a day like mine did.

This is my second attempt to inform this forum of a hidden problem I've found with my hard drive continuously spinning for no reason.
My 5 year-old domestic iMAC Macintosh HD disc drive burnt out, literally. After removing it and taking it apart, I found foam rubber had burnt over a small chip.
I replace it with an external drive (re-named it Machintosh HD) and restored my system via Time Machine.
After some time, I noticed the drive's light was on in the morning after it had not been used all night! The screen was black.
Investigation using Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities/Application Monitor.app) showed that writes (red lines) were made to the disc before it had time to shut-down. I don't know if it's an OS 10.6 or a hard-drive specified time-out to power down, but the writes were before then, so it never shut-down.
    WORD 2004
This was the first I found to cause the problem. Is it a Microsoft or Apple OS problem, I don't know. What happens is that even with no documents open, just Word open, a small amount of Data is written before the drive can power down, so it's continously spinning (I've felt the vibrations and heard it running). Thus, when I was doing a lot of Word processing a few years ago, I left it open for days-on-end without knowing the hard drive was continously running (24x7). No wonder it burnt-out.
    SAFARI
This is another source of the problem that I've found. Sometime it's a problem, sometimes it's not. However, it appears that it does depend upon what activity Safari is doing, eg flashing, blinking, what-ever. Haven't tracked it down as I'm happy to just shut it down when not needed when it no longer is a problem.
Maybe this is still an issue with OS 10.7 (Lion), Microsoft Excel, Power Point 2004 or newer versions of them and Word. I don't know.
You may need to check it out so your drive doesn't prematurely pack-up like mine did.

Agree 100%!  There seems to be no helpful instructions on how to manage Sharing & Permissions using the GetInfo panel. I'd like to ensure that my user files are only readable by myself. If I log in with my Admin name and password on Partition #1 and open my home folder, I find that Myself, Staff and Everyone has Read/Write privileges, by default. Is that stupid, or what?
I think so, because if I reboot as admin from Partition #2 that has its own, separate Snow Leopard system, I find to my dismay that I can still see virtually all of the contents of Partition #1, including all of my Partition #1 Admin home folder files!
Again rebooting from Partition 1, when I getinfo on my admin home folder, I could set myself to Read & Write, and set 'Staff' and 'Everyone' to "No Access".
But in the English language, "everyone" means EVERYONE, (which also includes MYSELF, right???) So, if I set Everyone to "No Access", will it remove MY read & write access?  Or, If "everyone" REALLY means "everyone else", why didn't they simply call it "everyone else" in the first place?
Next question: Who is "Staff"?  Does that include Everyone, or some sub-set of Everyone?  Am I, as Admin, part of "Staff"? But it gets even worse: Who is "Unknown User"?  I see this appear, sometimes. Really, this is enough to drive a person to consume multiple Margaritas...!!!

  • (955X Platinum) IDE HDDs on VIA Controller not powering down

    Hello,
I never had this problem on any motherboard that I've had. Currently, I have one SATA HDD connected to Intel ICH7R controller and two IDE HDDs connected to VIA IDE Controller (running in IDE mode). I have set Windows to power down the HDDs after 30 min. of inactivity (through the Screen Saver tab > Power button). SATA HDD does power down after the specified inactivity period. The two other IDE HDDs don't power down and are spinning all the time.
I always keep my PC on and would like the HDDs to power down when I'm out (sometimes days on end). I have FTP and HTTP servers set up and can access my data remotely whenever I need to and hence do not want to turn off the PC when its not in use !
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

pck, the advantage of having your IDE HDD on ICH7's very own IDE because this IDE is channeled directly into the southbridge. However, the VIA RAID controller is sit on top of PCI bus, then only channeled back to the southbridge (ICH7). Somemore, PCI bus is a shared medium with other PCI devices. However, ICH7's very own IDE is dedicated.
And of course, ICH7's very own IDE can support turn off HDD.
and VIA's controller DOES support Optical drives.

  • PC not powering down

When I run 'shutdown -h now' my PC (PII 166Mhz) will shutdown but not power off.  I've tried out several Linux distros on this box, including RedHat and Slackware, and Arch linux is the only distro which doesn't power off.  With Slackware I had to run 'modprobe apm' but that module doesn't appear to be available for Arch (even after I added package 'apm').  Am I missing something basic here?  Should 'shutdown -h now' power off the PC?  In case it is of importance, GRUB config is as below:-
    timeout   5
    default   0
    color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue
    title  Arch Linux  [/boot/vmlinuz26]
    root   (hd0,2)
    kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/discs/disc0/part3 ro

As suggested I re-compiled the kernel with only APM support (including APM realmode-power-off), but with no effect - the PC still halts but does not power off.  Should there now be a different parameter in GRUB?  I tried 'modprobe apm' (which is what worked for Slackware) but I just got 'module does not exist'.

  • Battery drains unless shut down on top right. Just touched, not powered down

I suspect this has to do with some App that is too power hungry.  My prime suspect is NEST.  Any thoughts?

  • Why must I reset sharing password every time host computer is shut down?

Using 10.7.5 on iMac desktop. Sharing Internet via Airport card. Every time the host computer is powered down the sharing password must be reset. Have tried using both security settings offered with same result.

Have you disabled hardware acceleration? (not solved by reset is usual)
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]

  • 30 cinema screen- does not power down

My screen does not turn off when the computer is powered down. The monitor light is lit as if it is sleeping. I am now experiencing problem turning on computer with monitor. The computer powers on but the monitor does not come on. I recently unplugged the monitor and powered on the computer and the both started up. Should the monitor light turn off is that creating a monitor issue? How can I fix this?

I have tried what you suggested but I still have the same problem.
The problem happens all the time in all Modes (sleep, hibernate, restart, shut down). The only way to get it back on it to hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Even closing the lid is the same a blank screen but the computer is still running and the only way to get it to come back on it to hold down the power button.

  • I just upgraded to Lion and I have not been able to successfully complete a restart. I go to apple menu, restart. The computer powers down no problem and starts but it does not open the desk top. It remains a grey screen with the spinning icon. Any help?

I have just upgraded to Lion 10.8.2. I have not been able to complete a restart. I go to the apple menu, click on restart. The computer powers down and restarts but never opens the desk top. The screen remain grey and a graphic just spins. I have left this happen for as much as 15 minutes without it openning the desk top. When I power down the computer with the power button and start again with the power button. It starts no problem.

    Hi Anythony ...
v10.8..2? Most reccent version of Lion is v10.7.4.
Use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk if necessary, or reinstall the Mac OS X.

  • My battery died while I was powering down my computer. Now I can't login. Please help?!

    Hi,
I was in the process of powering down my computer when the battery ran out of power. Now after I have typed my password  to login and pressed Return nothing happens. I can move the mouse but everything else freezes up and I can't click on anything. The only thing I can do is to manually power it down with the power-button. I am using Time Machine and therefore I re-installed a copy that was one week old but the same problem still exists.
    What do I do now?
I have the first version of Macbook with the aluminum body.
    Thanks for the help!

I am not sure how you re-installed from Time Machine, if you can't click on anything?  Anyway, with the power chord connected (since the battery is flat), try an SMC reset as described in the link.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If this doesn't improve the situation, I would suggest holding the Option key during a restart and selecting the Recovery partition, from where you can verify the disk and repair permissions and ultimately to do a re-instal of Lion if necessary.
