Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I have been a happy user of Firefox for many years. Around last April first I opened Firefox and was offered an update to v 4.42.0.0 which I accepted. Installation seemingly went well. I forget now exactly what happened but the result has been that ever since April 1 I haven’t been able to open the Firefox browser when clicking on the Firefox icon. My computer now was running very slowly. I tried to uninstall Firefox, but a popup told me I couldn’t because Firefox was in use. This confused me because I couldn’t see it being used. Only now I have found that on Task Manager processes that “firefox.exe” was consuming 99 % of the CPU. After removing firefox.exe by clicking End Process my computer ran better. I uninstalled Firefox I had on my computer and installed Firefox 5.0. Unfortunately I have the same problems: Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.
Born2die! Brilliant. I am a desktop clicker and never knew Firefox had a safe mode.
Thank You!
I was unable to start in safe mode initially. The second time I disabled all of the Add-Ons and she started up just fine. I enabled them one by one hoping to track down the culprit but the problem seems to have gone away.
BTW I am running ver. 3.6.8 (in response to cor-el's earlier post) and
Firefox is in the process of downloading 3.6.10 (which I am starting to think may have been what caused this whole problem to begin with)
Incidentally, whats up with all of the Java Console Add Ons?
I have:
Java Console 6.0.11, Java Console 6.0.13, Java Console 6.0.15
Java Console 6.0.17, Java Console 6.0.20, and Java Console 6.0.21
What are they? Do I need them? Can I uninstall them? Is this due to using Open Office?
Also, .NET Framework 0.0.0 Should I uninstall it? -

Mar 31, 2015, 08:06:47 PM Self test - passedFirst step would be to remove CleanMyMac as per developers instructions. Then remove Genieo Adware. Retest for better performance after removal.
Please review the options below to determine which method is best to remove the Adware installed on your computer.
The Easy, safe, effective method:
http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
If you are comfortable doing manual file removals use the somewhat more difficult method:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

After Archive and Install = computer running slowly
I just ran Archive and Install, repaired my Hard Drive with disk utility and ran software update, everything should be gangbusters.
But now, it takes much longer than usual for my computer to boot and when I do basic things like run a web browser, the finder and itunes at the same time, I get a 'pinwheel of doom' consistenly as if the computer needs to stop and process what's going on.
Why is my computer running so slowly? I have enough ram, processing to run very smoothly and my hard drive now has 15% free space. After I started a new user and used some of my old programs in that user, they loaded faster on the admin user I've been having problems with, and it seemed like my computer was starting to go back to normal.
New problems... I ran software update and there were a bunch of security updates, quicktime and other stuff I hadn't updated. It took a while to download and install so I left my house for a few hours. I came back and my computer showed the "restart to take effect" prompt. But then it wouldn't boot to OSX and I'm back to square one. Why would this keep happening? Why would my OS stop functioning after leaving it idle for several hours?
So now I'm re-installing the OS again and we'll see what happens.
Could it be that the climate is too hot? I have a thermometer program that says the inside of my computer is 135 degrees F. Is it too hot? Maybe a fan is broken?
In the past my OS has only stopped working due to lack of HD space but now I have about 15% free space. I'm really out of ideas here. -

Apr 23, 2015, 09:44:26 AM Self test - passedOne thing that would help a great deal is more memory - you only have 2 GB ram, Mavericks is going to use 1.5 GB of that leaving only half a GB for your other software/applications run.
First thing to do is add more ram, such as from a reliable source like OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com and they will even tell you the maximum your model iMac can use. -

1) I deleted both com.macpaw.CleanMyMac files you referenced above
2) I have now restarted my computer twice since last night. both times I had to force-restart the computer. Last night, after selecting Apple --> Restart my computer essentially froze all night and never restarted. I had to force restart it this morning when I woke up. I tried to restart it again tonight after deleting the CleanMyMac files and it froze or hung again. So I force restarted it once again. I don't recall that happen ever before.
Here are my new test results:

MacBook audio not working and computer running slowly.
lately, i have been experiencing audio issues and video issues. often times, the und icon in the menu bar will be grayed out. my computer has been running very slowly and i often have to hold the power button down to get it to work (temporarily). i took it into the apple store and said it needsa new logic board. i wanted to get a second opinion before i proceed. thank you.
No one here could possibly diagnose your MacBook better than the Apple Store, having drawn that conclusion after seeing it themselves.
The best diagnostic you could perform yourself would be to run Apple Hardware Test. Restart your computer while holding option D to run AHT, or boot from your original system install DVD while holding the D key.
If it reports "no problems found" then run the extended tests, which might take a half hour or more. -
Apologies - Another EtreCheck report for diagnosis
Any help with the following will be greatfully received.
I was having some performance issues running Snow Leopard on this machine after a few years of use - was great up until that point. I installed Mavericks to see whether that would help (naive I know!) but this appears to have made things worse if anything.
Have just run the EtraCheck utility and got the following report:

I can see that there are a couple of [failed]'s as well as what looks like high page-in page-out counts though I would be interested to know whether these ought to be zero ideally, i.e. when should you start worrying about these?
I noticed that I have been having more problems on Snow Leopard after I had installed MS-Office (no choice I am afraid) and Kaspersky. Neither seems to be hogging CPU or RAM according to the above though. Up until that point I had always made a big point to PC-using-friends that I have an old Mac still running like new.
I notice that after the Mac has been running for a few hours I can hear very faint disk chatter (supporting the paging I guess) when I try to change windows. If I have left the machine along for a while it can take a minute or so to come partially back to life.
If it is just about needing more RAM would be happy to purchase, but loathe to do this speculatively.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.Braunius wrote:

Your HD is getting low on space, 30GB free on a 250GB drive isn't much. The OS will be forced to use the slowest part of the disk for new files because the HD fills from the outside towards the center of the platter. See the second chart at http://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-Drive-Seagate-MomentusXT-500GB.html for an illustration of how read & write speed decreases across a spinning HD. Whilst I think more RAM may help, getting an SSD or faster HD with more free space will help performance.
The old MySQL startup item should be removed or updated if you use it.
I'd also remove Kaspersky to see if it has any effect. Is it up to date too? ClamXAV is a better option for AV scanning, it uses less resources & doesn't try to load it's own changes at the kernel level.
Also update/remove Canon.cupscapt.bg? It's also a system level job.
Akamai could cause issues in your user account, so update or remove.
Delete the old.mac job… it will be in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-[redacted]@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist
Hopefully you have already attended to Google Drive via the Eric's link.
If you are lucky removing Kaspersky or other system level items may make the com.apple.wdhelper job be able to load. Reboot & check it doesn't fail, otherwise wifi may have issues. The rest should help you understand what EtreCheck is reporting to you.
Cleanup:
All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.
Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).
Reboot for the system changes to take effect.
How to find updates:
The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.
com.logmein.hamachi.plist means look at http://logmein.com for updates (if you don't recognize it removing it may be appropriate)
In short: You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.
Startup Items: Stored in /Library/StartupItems/
Startup Items have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in here. The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.
Kernel Extensions: Stored in /Library/Extensions/
Kernel Extensions also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.
Launchd jobs: several types
LaunchAgents - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents
LaunchDaemons - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons
User LaunchAgents - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'], non-system jobs.
EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…
[loaded] - a running job
[not loaded] - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)
[failed] - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.
User login items:
Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.
These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot. When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.
3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:
/Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions. You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences
Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.
Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).
Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).
Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level. -
Macbook Pro running slowly (EtreCheck information included)
My MacBook Pro suddenly started performing very slowly. I tried rebooting in recovery mode by holding command + R at start up, but nothing happens. I have tried to perform a software update, and when I do so, it checks for updates, and asks me to restart my computer so they can be installed, but the computer just restarts and doesn’t do any software updates. Not sure what else I can do.

Parallels runs slowly for no apparent reason-Please Help
Hey everybody. I'm running into an interesting situation when I'm running Parallels on my Core 2 Duo MBP. Basically, when parallels is running Windows XP, the whole computer is running very slowly. I have windows running on a second monitor, and I am running mac os in the laptop's screen. I checked my cpu and memory usage and it's around 30% for cpu and 27 mb for memory...this seems far from maxed out to me. Anybody have a diagnosis for what this is or a suggestion on how to fix it?
I have Parallels running on my MBP 2ghz CoreDuo with 2gb of memory. It seems to be running pretty fast.
How much memory did you allocate to Windows? Initially, I had 1gb, then lowered it to 700mb, no difference. I do, however, notice that Parallels takes up about 300-400mb real memory and 2.1GB of virtual memory.
The only issue I have is when I use remote desktop to connect to my PC at work. (my vpn sw does not work on the Intel Macs yet ...
Occassionally, Remote Desktop will go crazy sometimes and consume 100% of the CPU and hang for several minutes...hehe but that's Windows for you... -

The address assignment ("lease") expires, and has to be renewed, after a certain amount of time, which might be one hour or one day. The lease expired without being renewed because the device was offline at the time. Meanwhile, the address was leased to another device on the network. When the first device comes back online, it still has the address that's now also leased to the second device. Depending on what kind of router you have, the conflict may resolve itself automatically. If not, then from the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the TCP/IP tab. Now look at the menu labeled Configure IPv4. If the selection in that menu is Using DHCP, click the button labeled Renew DHCP Lease. Test.
Less likely, you have a network address that you assigned yourself, and another device is assigning itself the same address. In that case, the selection in the Configure IPv4 menu will be either Manually or Using DHCP with manual address. This kind of conflict won't be resolved automatically. You have the following options to resolve it:
Change the menu selection to Using DHCP.
Change the manually-assigned address to one that isn't being used by another device.
Change the address of the other device.
Which of these options you should choose depends on the details of why you're using a static IP address. Any change you make to the network settings must be applied before it takes effect. To do that, click OK and then Apply. -
My eMac is running very slowly at random points, and I would like some help either deleting items, or if there is a way to "defrag" it like I could on a PC. (of course it won't be the same thing, but something similar) There are four people using this computer, each has an iTunes library of at least sizeable weight. I know at least that mine is by FAR the largest at 30 GB, and another is about 16 GB. I would like to uninstall some older programs, but I do not know how. I deleted their icons in the applications folder, but other than that I am clueless. Help would be much appreciated.
My standard list of things to do first for these weird sort of problems. Keep in mind this list represents the programs I tend to use. There are several alternate programs that do the same things with some combining the functions of some of the ones below. So everyone has their favorites, but here are mine...
Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system, especially any external drives that you use for iMovie and iDVD projects.
Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
Reboot your Mac (after running Cache Out X you are given the option to restart the machine).
You might also check under Preferences -> Users and check to see what start up items you have under various accounts. iTunes helper is usually there for everyone, but you might find other hidden apps from past programs you tried out, that might still be autorunning at startup.
Also you can go into Apps -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor if you want to see the various processes going on and if there are any programs you don't recognize hogging up a lot of CPU time.
Finally, how much free drive space do you have left on your boot drive? Macs can slow down a lot if they start to run low on drive space and have to do a lot more swapping of temp files between RAM and the hard drive, especially if your Mac doesn't have much RAM. How much RAM do you have? Which eMac model do you use (update your profile for future posts)?

EtreCheck Report: Could somebody please have a look at this?
Hello guys (m/f)
I just did an EtreCheck after I read about it a whilke ago here on the Apple Support Communities. I'm using a late 2012 iMac now, but my previous iMac (2009, not sure when exactly) seemed to be slow too. It's slow opening tabs, sites, etc. And it's slow shutting down.
BTW I switched off Time Machine a while ago, as my external WD started reporting bad block. (Wanted to get my NAS to take over, but can't figure out why. That's why I've been going without a Time Machine backup for way to long.)
Here's the report:

Hope you guys find something. (and that this is the right place to put my question!)
Sincerely
MathyYou have a lot of potential for things to go wrong. If any of the red items are old they could be doing a lot of damage to performance, since they are loaded into the system level.
Synology appears to be doing something with SIMBL - follow the removal instructions at http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php
It is a hacky way to inject code into apps. Check the synology site for updates.
The failed launchd job [failed] de.writeitstudios.cookiestumbleragent.plist could cause issues within your user account.

That isn't a great idea. I'd suggest you logout, log back in but hold shift as you click the login button it will disable all those apps & show you if they are part of your issues.
'Safe mode' will disable all third party extensions & startup items (hold shift after the chime until the spinning 'cog' appears). Ensure the login window says 'safe mode'.
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Be aware that some features will be disabled like wifi on some models, graphics drivers will be in a reduced mode - this is normal in safe mode. Reboot to go back to normal.
Hopefully the notes below will help you understand the report better

Red items are loaded at the system level (not necessarily bad, but they have the potential to modify the OS).
Blue items are loaded at the user level
Cleanup:
All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.
Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" when you need to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).
I have a brand new Macbook Pro with Lion preinstalled. I haven't even turned it on yet. I desperately need Snow Leopard because my music software is not Lion compatible yet. I also have a Time Machine backup from my old Macbook that is currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. How can I get Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro? Also, will Time Machine replace the applications on the new Macbook Pro with the older versions I have in the backup or how exactly does that work? I've been staring at the box for 2 days now worried I won't be able to use any of my software. PLEASE HELP ME!
It depends on the build of your machine; normally, no Mac can ever boot from a system older than what it came with. However, there are exceptions: right around the time the new OS is released, there may be some machines which will be able to run both OS's. Here is some information on software builds:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
You may have to call Apple to figure out if you can use SL on yours or not. -
What to do if computer runs slowly
My iMac is about 3 years old. I am running OS x 10.6.8. I have a ADSL 2+ internet connection and use an airport extreme as I also have a MacBook pro. My computer is slow. I've been told to use disk utility to repair disk permission once a onth. Anything else I should do?
Hi allan,
Sorry for the delay - have been away. My MacBook Pro is only 6 months old and I mainly use that for surfing the web, Facebook etc so I must admit I don't put it under the pressure I expect of my iMac. I do all my photo and video editing on the iMac.
With the iMac, I make a point of not having too many applications open at any one time - iCal is always running, Mail and usually Safari.
I guess if I really think about it, most of my angst comes when I am using Word for Mac and Excel - I get the little coloured wheel while it thinks about it a lot and sometimes I have to force quit Word. I have to fess up here - the edition I am using is the very first one for OS X - just looking at the About Word info now (Yup, Word X for Mac Release 1 - 1993). You'll probably advise me to spend a few bucks and get the latest version!!!! Grateful for your thought.s
