Concept of COBRA in Oracle Databases

Hi,
What is the concept of COBRA in Oracle Databases? It the same as RAD?
Adith

What is RAD?
Oracle has an embedded Java Runtime. Java has CORBA interfaces.
Can you be more specific as to what you want to do?

  • How to configure Oracle database in a failover zone cluster

Setup: Oracle database and zone configured on highly available local filesystems.
    Two node cluster.
Oracle database running inside the zone.
Note: I dont have a zone cluster.
    1. I need to make the zone and the oracle database highly available.
    2. Can I configure the Oracle Data service directly to run in the zone or will it involve creating sczsh_config script to do the same.
I have been going through the guides and searching over the net, but haven't found any help so far. Its so much simpler to configure this environment in Veritas cluster. Hope I find some help here.
    TIA,
    Sudhir

The Oracle Solaris Cluster concepts guide has some information on which zone model to choose:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18728_01/html/821-2682/gcbkf.html#scrolltoc
When managing a Solaris zone with the HA Zones agent, the cluster basically regards the non-global zone as a blackbox.
As such you can either start the Oracle database as part of the runlevel/SMF startup of the non-global zone, or you can use the sczsh or sczsmf component and use your own scripts to start, probe and stop the Oracle database.
Usage of the standard HA Oracle data service is not supported in combination with the HA Zones agent.
If you require a more fine grained control of services running in non-global zones, why not setup a zone cluster and then having HA Oracle failover the Oracle database between non-global zones?

But of cause if you want to learn more DBA stuff then the OCA DBA is a good thing to prepare with.
For both certifications you need to pass two exams. The first is an SQL exam which is identical for both OCAs. The second one is a PL/SQL exam for the OCA Developer and an Adminsitartion exam for the OCA DBA.

    hello
    my pc has following configurtion
    256mb ram
    60gb hdd
    p4 2.4 ghz
    win xp pro sp2
I want to know if my pc will be able to run " Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) " standard edition on it.
I thought of increasing RAM, but it is not feasible.
I know i could run oracle XE, but can my pc also run the standard edition.
I could not find minimum hardware requirements for standard edition on this site.
anyway, i will use it for sql and and other advanced concepts in RDBMS which i may learn during my course in database. so i prefer standard edition instead of XE
    any help greatly appreciated
    thanks in advance

I suggest you not to doubt   regarding   Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) installation.
It is not necessary. If you don't receive an answer within a reasonable amount of time you could edit your thread with whatever ( a period is enough) to raise it to the top once again.
It becomes difficult for us to track duplicated threads and unnecessarily duplicates efforts.

  • Creating A New Oracle Database And Sql Developer

    Hi,
I'm a newbie to Oracle and and a not so newbie to Sql Server and Visual Studio.
I am trying to learn Oracle on my local machine. I want to create a new Oracle Database and start learning from there.
I have downloaded sql developer, the data modeler, and the Oracle Client. Could someone please provide some guidance on how to create a Oracle Database?
From the responses, it appears that none of the items I mentioned actually creates a database. Sql Server provides a free download, also a developer version for a minimal fee. What specific Oracle product would be best to provide this type of service?
    Thanks,

Edited by: user8948230 on Jan 7, 2010 9:50 AMIn addition to downloading and installing the database software to create a database, might I also suggest you start getting familiar with the documentation.
Learning where to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career. To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
Go to tahiti.oracle.com. Drill down to your product and version.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab you will find the complete documentation library.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what kind of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what kind of information is available there.
Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
Do the same with the Utilities manual.
You don't have to read the above in depth. They are reference manuals. Just get familiar with what is there to be referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
After you have familiarized yourself with what is available, read the "2-Day DBA" manual to help get you started.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual.
    - Look in your alert log and find all the non-default initialization parms listed at instance startup. Then read up on each one of them in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again.
Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.

  • Use of JDBC to execute ddls in oracle database

    Hi,
I am knew to the JDBC concepts. My requirement is to execute oracle database ddls from a JSP application. The ddls like 'Alter tablespace...', 'Alter session...' etc.. The application is using JDBC to connect to the database.
Is there any option available to do this task using JDBC
If not, then please let me know if there are any other ways to execute such statements from an application.
    Thanks

If you can't do it in a proc then you can't do it from jdbc.
If not, then please let me know if there are any other ways to execute such statements from an application. You can run scripts via the command line using sqlplus (character mode.)
    Sqlplus is an application.
You can control any application (character based) in java via Runtime.exec/ProcessBuilder.

  • Oracle database normalisation and logical design documnetation

    Hi ,
Am a begginer on DB design , can anyone help me find Oracle database normalisation and logical design documnetation for reference.
    Thanks,
    Swaroop

Database logical design and normalization are typically DBMS (Database Management System) independent. Meaning that you could do a whole LOGICAL design without regards to the platform in which it will be based. There are many, many resources on the internet if you search for them. if you used terms like "logical database design", or "database normalization" on Google or your search engine of choice I imagine you'll come up with many results.
When it comes to the actual physical design of the database (as in tablespaces, datafiles, indexes, etc) I would first consult the "Oracle Concepts Guide", and then something like the "Application Developer's Guide." This documentation is all available at:
    http://otn.oracle.com
    Hope this helps!

  • Create new oracle database with JAVA

    Hi!
I would appreciated it if you could help me to solve a problem that i have.
I am trying to create a new oracle database by a JAVA 1.4.2 application. I am using the scripts that Oracle 10.g supplies during the creation of a new database from the server (Generate Database Creation Scripts) with the appropriate changes, generated by a java application. Unfortunately, i am unable to connect with the database and the listener. Is there any other way to create a new database by java and how can i solve my current problem with the oracle scripts?
    Thank you.

    A) To create a new schema, you need to be connected as a user that has create schema privilege, or as tyhe user who is to own the schema (remembering that the user has appropriate create privs, as seen in the GRANT command in the SQL Reference manual). Not an issue at all, I think, if you coordinate this with your DBA. Discussed very well in the Administrator's manual.
    B) Alternately, you could create a complete copy of the schema, including all desired objects (tables, views, etc.) in a separate database and simply export the user and schema. Then simply invoke the OS-based import command (imp) to load that entire thing into the target database.
    C) To create a new database, there are 3 simple steps ...
    1) create the appropriate initialization parameter file
the init{sid}.ora file should be placed in the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs or %ORACLE_HOME%\database directory. (I recommend you do not attempt to create the spfile.) Of critical interest will be setting the block size information, the control file parameters, and using the appropriate memory management parameters, based on the version of the software you will be using to create the database instance.
    2) start an empty instance, pointing to the parameter file
This will be an OS specific call, and will require that you have the correct OS environment set up as well as access to the ORACLE_HOME which will provide the software that you will invoke. In *nix you will need to call the sqlplus command with sysdba provs and in Windows you will need to call oradim to initialize this as a service.
    3) run the SQL create database command
You might want to use the dbca to create a template of the create database command, or look in the SQL Reference manual for the variations on the command. Of critical interest will be initializing the redo logs as well as the system, sysaux (if needed), temp and undo tablespaces after which you can set up the regular tablespaces, users and schemas. I highly recommend that you have redundant copies of the control files on separate drives.
You may want to review the online Concepts manual and the Adminstration Guide for some of the specifics to your needs, but I think I've covered the basics.
Remember that ideally you will only have one database instantiated on any given server as the memory and CPU overhead of each instance is significant.
    Good luck.

  • Oracle Database Authentication against Microsoft Active Directory

    Hello
Does anyone know if it is possible or can point me in the right direction of some documentation that discuss Oracle database user authentication against and Enterprise Directory Service, in my cases MS AD?
My environment consists of Oracle RDBMS 10.2.0.3 on Linux Red Hat AS 4. Our users connect in from Window clients. I would like to know if there is a way to autheticate users from Windows to the database using LDAP based (AD) authentication. In oters words how do I configure authentication to be done for "identified globally accounts"? I know that the identified by globally accounts require the use of the CN which I have done, but it seems like there is some piece missing. Perhaps an Oracle schema or modification to Active Directory??
    So my questions are
    1. Is it possible to authenticate users against AD without the implementation of OID?
    2. Is there documentation someone has or can point me to that outlines the required steps?
    3. Anything I should know?
I appreciate any help. The documentation I have found so far doesn't seem to be what I need... So I am looking for some advice.
    Thanks.

Sure, two methods to auth from Oracle DB to MSAD:
    OID and OVD
I am working on our own proof of concept configuring EUS connect to OVD with an MSAD as auth at the moment. OVD basically is presenting the database with OracleSchema and OracleContext info. And when you connect via netca (ldap.ora), you assign it as OID directory authentication type.
Here's an OVD manual on Integrating with EUS (chapter 7 is for MSAD)http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/id_mgmt/ovds/pdf/e10286.pdf
And this would be what the EUS config should look like:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/security/database-security/howtos/eus-how-to.html
If you've done everything in the first doc...
    Hope this answers your questions.

  • Please help, urgent! How to hold the connection to oracle database

I used java to connect Oracle database using thin driver. But I found out the connection will be closed very soon if I did not make any request of query. I query the database like after 1 mins without doing anything, my application will dead for about 2 mins, then everything become normal again.
How can I hold the connection or is there any other solution? thank you!

Duffy is, as usual, correct. If you have a single-user environment, then holding onto a connection is probably okay (not desirable but also not pernicious). However, once you have more than one user, you will want to use a connection pool. Jakarta Commons (jakarta.apache.org) has an open source pool that is reliable.
But the fact that you are having additional problems makes me believe you are missing a few fundamental concepts, such as transactions. Even if the connection dropped, you should be able to reconnect without issue (granted, with some additional latency). The only time it would pose an issue (above and beyond the ones mentioned above and in previous replies) is if you are not managing your transactions properly.
In short, take some tutorials on JDBC, DataSource, connection pools and transaction management.

  • Download problems Oracle Database 10g Express Edition

    Completed download.
Attempted to start application but cannot find the server.
Removed the software using add/remove programs.
Attempted to reinstall but it seems that some applications are still on my system.
Attempted to remove the application but the add/remove program does not recognized the application
    What can I do.

    Hello,
I need to install "Oracle database 10g Express Edition" with different database name example dev but it is taking
default name that is XE and there is no option come during installation where i can put the name of database as per my desire.First, note that you can't install more than one instance of XE per server. Changing the instance name won't help you with that.
As you've already found out, the installer always creates a database instance with default names. That's part of the "Express" concept: As little configuration as necessary to get a Oracle Database installed with just a few clicks. The second advantage is, that you can also simplify the documentation, as you can forget about several aspects when you don't have to configure them...
Since you don't have tools like dbca in XE, your only option would be to rename the database once it's created. There are a few threads on that topic in this forum, e. g. {thread:id=403056}.
But before you start working on that, could you explain why exactly you have to use a different database/instance name?
And also explain why we use "Oracle database 10g Express Edition" instead of Oracle database 10g. what is the meaning of Express Edition. Why and how should we answer why you picked a certain edition? The most likely cause is license costs: XE is available for free, all others are just free as long as you use the OTN license...
For an overview, there is a [url http://www.oracle.com/us/products/database/enterprise-edition/comparisons/index.html]Comparison Matrix for Oracle Database Editions.
I'd furthermore ask why you still use 10g XE instead of the current 11g XE?

You SHOULD start learning with book "Expert Oracle Database Architecture" by Thomas Kite. That book teaches you the basis. Only after you finish it, read

What is the maximum size possible
for an Oracle Database on Linux ?
Is it limited to 2GB ? (the max file size

Mysql allows 4GB max, but for each table.
In fact 2GB with Linux (due to Linux
    Max file size = 2GB).

Log to sqlplus as system ...
    1. Create a new tablespace & datafile.
CREATE TABLESPACE "TESTSPACE" DATAFILE '/db/u01/oradata/testdata.dbf' SIZE 1000M DEFAULT STORAGE ( INITIAL 100K NEXT 2K MINEXTENTS 2 MAXEXTENTS UNLIMITED PCTINCREASE 0 ) MINIMUM EXTENT 2K
    2. Then add datafiles to the tablespace as needed...
ALTER TABLESPACE "TESTSPACE" ADD DATAFILE '/db/u01/oradata/testdata2.dbf' SIZE 1000M
This will add two 1000m datafiles...
You can alter and make the files sizes larger and smaller... You can also add more files...
Also when you create tables make sure you reference them to the testspace tablespace or they will default to the user tablespace which will not be able to accomodate large data without modification.
This is really just the tip of the iceberg...
I really recommend reading the server concepts manual.
