Concerning privacy, and trust

I've been using the last "good" version of skype (i prefer older versions a bit more) for a long while now, and I find it rather disturbing that I'm forced to update.
Why does skype keep doing this? Every update skype has, makes it less enjoyable. Shouldn’t I be allowed to continue to use the last version of skype I could enjoy, without wondering when it is that my time will be up?
You could, at the very least, make more releases similar to pre 5.0.0.105 versions of skype. At least then; updates would be voluntary to say the least.

The Air network is seperate, it is broadcast as a seperate network, so you will see your BigPond/Telstra network and Telstra Air and FON Wifi being broadcast by your modem (as well as a guest network if you have one activated). But as the FON/Air networks are broadcast seperately no one using those can access your network or details

Do you mean run VSS between your 4507R and the new 4507R+E ? If so then no you can't do this as the orginal chassis plus the supervisor II+ does not support VSS. See this link for hardware requirements needed for VSS -

Questions on privacy and safari, browser history; top sites; private browsi

In one thread someone suggested that those concerned about the privacy of their web browsing and its history try Private Browsing. What are the consequences of Private Browsing? Does Private Browsing interfere with some of the web page features or javascript from working when I'm trying to access a page that has java or Flash? Will my bank's website load ok etc? I guess I was a little worried it would stop the showing of the last page visited and if so then hopefully that won't stop some sites from functioning.
Is Private Browsing the best way to go all around for those concerned about privacy loss in Safari or does it not really help much? I wonder why it isn't the default.
I want to be able to use my browser to access sites that don't load well when I use Firefox with NoScript, such as bank sites, but I do not want my browsing history to stay in view constantly, and I'm also upset at seeing it want to "learn" my browsing habits and try to suggest sites for me without my setting it to do this.
For this reason I will be setting Firefox or any other browser I feel is more private than Safari, possibly Camino, to be my default browser. I will probably only be using Safari when a site won't work without it, same as when I used to settle for Internet Explorer on my windows computer when Firefox didn't work.
I'm also concerned that I can't get that Google search bar out of my browser. I don't want Google keeping tabs of every site I visit. I'm not sure if Google has access to tracking every place I go if I never put any text into the Google search bar or how far into bed with Google Apple has now gone but I'm afraid of the privacy invasion possibilities.
Perhaps Google gets no info if I do not type anything into the google search bar. I wish I could drag it off the menu bar however. (If I want to go to google, I know how to type google.com for crying out loud).
I hope Apple will hold the line on its partners re: privacy in products like iPhone and Safari that work with its partners regardless of their tendencies to disrespect privacy.
Does anyone know if the fact that this Safari software wants to learn what my favorite sites are affects outside parties including Apple, Google, and/or others possibly getting access to info on my browsing habits?
If i allow the Top Sites page to work, will it just be something I MYSELF have access to the info on or are the URLs of my favorite sites reported to Apple, Google, or others?
Does hitting RESET clear things out in this regard? I'd like to use these tools if I could be sure that using Safari doesn't turn the computer into a spyware tool for outside entities, commercial interests and governmental interests to mine data from.

You can set the history to be deleted after one day (or longer). If you are concerned, it is quite easy to clear history before you sign off.<</div>
I've been using RESET to clear my history in the past; I assume it still works although Reset doesn't seem to permanently make certain cookies with future expiration dates go away permanently, which I find come back later even without my visiting a site for weeks and this was happening in the previous version of Safari too.
You can remove the Google search box (or anything else) from the menu bar. Right click on it. One option is +"remove item."+
That doesn't work in terms of just removing the Google search bar at the top right, I see.
I did not want to lose my blank for typing a URL; I only want the thing out to the right that says Google on it, which seems to use Google's search engine to go away. I certainly hope that every time I type a URL into the blank at the left top (which is not the part over to the top right that says Google and a magnifying glass) that I'm not having Google track my URLs I visit like they would if I put a search term into the blank at the top right, but maybe it does since the two are forcibly linked.
I guess I'd have to try Command L - Open Location in the Find menu if I want to try to go to a URL without using the URL blank at the top left I normally type in. I would only want to go to that trouble if typing in the top left blank for URLs results in Google tracking my URL visits like they certainly would if I typed in the top right google tool bar and hopefully Open Location does not result in the same issue.

I seriously doubt that Apple (or anyone else) is "reporting" anything about you to anyone. As you are no doubt aware, most web sites store cookies on your system when you visit that site. The information stored varies, but you can, of course, block cookies if you wish.
I have the ability to block cookies, and I use Noscript a lot too with Firefox (although that set up does not always work with a few webpages here and there, so sometimes I have to use Safari or Camino). I use Safari less and less because there is no Noscript type of third party software for it. The only time I feel I have no choice but to use Safari on my Mac is when I go to my Mobileme account.
My concern is of Top Sites "learning" my favorite sites and displaying to me the names of a lot of suggested URLs, as to who else is receiving that data; hopefully no one. Maybe I'll get to where i find info explaining that Apple and Google aren't collecting data about my "top sites" if I use that feature.
It's just that there has been an increasing amount of privacy intrusion in the commercial realm combined with a corporate arrogance in terms treating consumers as though there is no need to make any assurances or explanations to consumers to help them trust the privacy. Instead we get browbeaten by various parties about how stupid or obvious we are if we ask a question to remind the corporation it's an issue to those of us who want to feel comfortable with the privacy of the software we use.
I'll try to use the Feedback form to ask as well.
At the risk of stating the obvious, it is quite easy to find out all sorts of information about an individual if one is interested. If you are really concerned, I suggest you severely limit your use of the Internet.
I may well limit my use of the internet if what you say is true that there is no way to do any reading on the internet without being spied on by commercial and governmental interests.

How to fix privacy and extensions tab that are blank (using Safari 5.1.7)

I have looked at the help provided in this forum for fixing the privacy and extension tabs that happen to now be blank. However, being new to a mac, I was not able to follow those instructions. If anyone can give me some help/guidance, I would really appreciate it. Also, what exactly does the privacy tab do? If it has been blank for a while and I have been to websites and used my credit card information was it secure? Thanks so much in advance for any/all help. TAD

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Nobody else should be able to download from a new device or computer unless they have access to two of your password, a trusted device, and your recovery key. You are sure that they are using it e.g. there are a number of phishing emails doing the rounds saying that something has been downloaded on an account and to click on a link in the email if it wasn't you that made it so as to request a refund (i.e. so that they can capture your password and payment details).

Import and trust a self-signed CA certificate from the Terminal

Hello there,
i have a problem: I would like to import and trust a self-signed CA(root) certificate from the Terminal to the System.keychain.
My request is to create a installation script to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client and the needed certificates.
For the import i have used the following command:
    sudo security import certificate.cer -k "/Library/Keychain/System.keychain" -A
    The Option "-A" says:
Allow any application to access the imported key without warning (insecure, not recommended!) <- From the Mac Developer Library
The command reportet: 1 certificate is importet ... but ... the certificate is not trusted.
What do i need to do to set this certificate as trustworthy at the terminal?

... and i get the following message:

     Error reading file ~/Downloads/mycert.cer
Today i changed the last argument to:
   /Users/User/Downloads/mycert.cer
and its run.

Adding sites to compatibility mode and trusted sites, IE10 and Server 2008

We're having a challenge with configuring a GPO to add several sites to Compatibility View Settings as well as adding several others (the same sites, plus some others) to Trusted Sites. We are currently running VMware's Persona Management/floating
pools (thin provisioned linked clones), with the appdata folder redirected to the Persona server. Clients are running IE10, DCs are running Server 2008 R2 with IE8.
gpresult/r shows the GPO listed under Applied GPOs on the User Settings side (and all the settings are user settings); however, compatibility and trusted sites settings do not apply.
From prior research on the topic, I seem to recall that I needed to install the IE10 IEAK; however, I cannot install that without having IE10 installed first, and I cannot install IE10 without installing the pre-requisite elements, which I cannot install
(either through Windows Update or the IE10 standalone installer). When the IE10 install fails, it refers me to a Microsoft KB article that won't open. If I open the article on a workstation PC, I find links to five separate prerequisite files.
If I download all five files and attempt to install them, they say they're not applicable to my computer. I can't post links in this article yet (account hasn't been verified), but a Google search for "MS KB 2818833" leads to the page with
the links.
64-bit Server 2008 R2.

Before going further, how did we configure the settings? Since Windows 8, the IEM settings have been deprecated. As a result, IEM settings won't apply to IE10 or above. However, in this situation, we should be able to use administrative templates
to configure the settings we want.

PDF Certificates and Trust Levels

Using Adobe Pro 9 9.2.0. As a developer, this is my first experience with PDF. The requirement is to harvest data from fillable PDF in XFDF format for parsing and input to a database, and save the filled PDF to a server. I am aware of the JavaScript API to export data in various formats. I am also aware of the app.trustedFunction and its use to perform non-privileged functions, like exporting and saveas functions. When I run the export/save script using the trustedFunction wrapper I still get a NotAllowedError. I rem'ed out the body of the function and found the error is occurring with the trustedFunction itself. Checking the security settings under the Advanced menu, Certificate Details, under my user ID (corporate environment), and Trust tab, I find the Trust Settings entries are red X'd out and that the certificate is not trusted.. The fillable forms we use are obtained from a government agency (FAA). My questions: Can the trust level of a document be altered once created? How are certificates involved in the process and/or can new ones be created or attached to a document?

I'd want a correct, current and valid certificate chain (and would likely set up a private CA, as is my wont), as bad certs can block some sorts of secure network access until either corrected or overridden, and as training the end-users to always "yeah, whatever" with certificate security can potentially lead to... well, other issues.
The software update server will certainly download new and updated changes, but shouldn't need to re-download everything. Disk images will need to be updated.
I'd verify proper local DNS services and correct certs as part of the initial validation of the configuration, yes.
That's entirely your call. Won't really help with the disk images, and will require a re-download of updates.

Domains and Trust

So I got in this morning to start working with AD (prep for the move to Office365) tried to launch domains and trust and I receive the following error: "The configuration information describing this enterprise is not available. The target principal name is incorrect. I believe the secure connection is broken. At present, I cannot log on to the PDC emulator. I have 3 DC in total and its the PDC that's giving me problems. I believe this is stemming from a Kerberos error event id 5. Authentication against the PDC is still good however I cannot do anything with domains and trust.
I have read several posts about stopping KDC and resetting the password but I cannot gain access to the PDC.

Keystore and trust store

i am writing a lib that uses JSSE. I need to set the keystore and trust store for the SSL to work. i do not want to use the system properties to set the above as it is a lib and user may have different values set. Is there any other way of specifying the location of Keystore and trustore, other than System properties.

There must be a problem with the app store right now as a number of people seem to be having this problem right now. Try purchasing it using iTunes on your computer, accept the terms and conditions there, then either sync it to your phone or download it on your phone as a past purchase (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519). If this doesn't work you'll have to try again later when the problem is fixed.

Note that the "Use custom settings for history" selection allows to see the current history and cookie settings, but selecting this doesn't make any changes to history and cookie settings.<br />
Firefox shows the "Use custom settings for history" selection as an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings is not the default to make you aware that changes were made.<br />
If all History settings are default then the custom settings are hidden and you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History" (Never remember history means that Private Browsing mode is active).
"Use custom settings for history" stays selected if at least one of the History or Cookie settings is not the default to make you aware that changes from the defaults are made.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

BT Net Protect Plus Problem: Quarantined and Trust...

The Navigation TAB in BT NetProtect Plus provides access to:-
Quarantined and Trusted Items
"Lets you review and handle items that either you or McAfee has quarantine or trusted"
Clicking on this tab takes user to
Quarantined Items, Quarantined Potentially Unwanted Items and Trusted Items
The McAffee virus checker is not infallible and can erroveously quarantine software and thus make this unusable to user unless following actions are carried out
1. RESTORE and remove/ deactivate virus checking software (little value if system requrus checker!!!)
2. Send to McAfee (BT Tech support cannot telll me when I will get answer)     (Problem logged)
3.   User moves items into Trusted items area.
       BT Tech support could not explain how to move items into Trusted Items location.
         More annoyingly BT Tech support refused to understand the phrase shown in software :-

Sounds like another McAfee problem which will probably right itself in due course. But why persist with an antivirus program that's an unreliable resource hog, now so poor that even its originator John McAfee has disowned it? There are several superior, free choices out there, eg Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira, AVG.
If you opt for an alternative make sure to uninstall McAfee fully, including the removal tool.

Thank you for replying. Unfortunately, I already did all of these things. As you can see from the below screenshot, the language is already set. Also, this screenshot was taken in Safe Mode, so NoScript is not enabled. About:accounts still says I need to enable cookies for some reason. So, this solution didn't work....
