Concurrency, Executors
Hi Guys
I have written this class to send mails off and it works perfecly except that it puts java.exe
at 50% cpu usage permanently.
Can anybody see a design flaw and point it out too me? I do not understand why this is clogging up the cpu?

Help me regards perfomance:java.util.concurrent.Executors
hi friends,
I implemented the concurrent.Executors in my project. to tell my problem consider a program that insert 1000 data into oracle database.
instead of inserting 1000 data as a single operations i created 5 threads using the concurrent API. and inserted 200 records per thread.
when i analyse the time(in miliseconds) i got the following result,
insert the 1000 records through a single thread thks 200 ms.
when i use 5 threads it taks atlease 200 ms to a single thread.
so every threads finished it in 200 or 210 ms. so both perfomance is equal.
Buy i want to run the each thread in 200/5. time. then my perfomance will be improved.
Can anybody help me.
With regards Princei think eventhough i use the seperate connection i
got some lock on some object when my Statement(not
PreparedStatement) executes the query(by some other
threads) so all the threads taks almost same time to
finish like ordinary operation. is't it. i want to
speadup the operation. Three threads doing the same stuff taking five turns each:
1
2
3
1
2
3
1
2
3
1
2
3
1
2
3
Notice something? They all start and end at the same time.
because in my company i am doing the process with
80000 data. i taks 1 hour to complete all tasks. how
can i minimize the time by using the threads?Find the bottleneck first. -
Using a SwingWorker in an Executor class?
Here's some code that works and does what I want but I don't know if its a good idea....
I have a program that may run one of a couple dozen long operations. I want to bring up a progress dialog to show the user how these operations are coming along.
I was using a swing worker every time I ran a long task but its a pain to make changes in so many different places. So I set up the approach below.
import java.util.concurrent.Executor;
import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
import com.sun.java.help.impl.SwingWorker;
* This class takes a long task as a Runnable and
* runs it while showing a progress dialog
public class MyExecutor implements Executor
public void execute(Runnable r)
final MySmallProgressWindow dialog;
dialog = new MySmallProgressWindow();
final Runnable fr = r;
dialog.show("Testing Executor ") ;
final SwingWorker worker = new SwingWorker()
public Object construct()
try
fr.run();
catch(Exception g)
System.err.println(g);
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Error: " + g.toString(), "Error", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
finally
dialog.hide();
System.out.println("Clean up here in finally");
return null;
public void finished()
dialog.hide();
worker.start();
I call it this way
MyExecutor execute = new MyExecutor();
Runnable runnableCopy = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
someLongTask();
execute.execute(runnableCopy);Comments?

When using a thread pool executor (java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor) to limit the number of threads executing at a time, the number of threads running still exceeds the limit number.
This is the code:
private ThreadPoolExecutor threadPoolExecutor = new ThreadPoolExecutor(2, 3, 20, TimeUnit.SECONDS, new LinkedBlockingQueue());
The number of tasks in my program are 4, so i always have 4 threads running, although i limited it to 3.
Can anyone help me with this problem? Or can u propose another solution to limit the number of running threads? By the way, i also tried using a newFixedThreadPool() and got the same problem.
Thx.The number of tasks in my program are 4, so i always
have 4 threads running, although i limited it to 3.How do you know that there are 4 threads running? If you're generating a JVM thread dump, you're going to see threads that are used internally by the JVM.
Here's a simple program that creates a fixed-size threadpool and runs jobs. It limits the number of concurrent threads to 3. Compare it to what you're doing, I'm sure that you'll find something different. Also, verify that you're not creating threads somewhere else in your program; all of the ThreadPoolExecutor threads will have names of the form "pool-X-thread-Y"
import java.util.concurrent.Executors;
import java.util.concurrent.ExecutorService;
public class ThreadPoolTest {
public static void main(String[] args) {
ExecutorService pool = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(3);
for (int ii = 0 ; ii < 10 ; ii++) {
pool.execute(new MyRunnable());
pool.shutdown();
private static class MyRunnable implements Runnable {
public void run() {
log("running");
try {
Thread.sleep(1000L);
catch (InterruptedException e) {
log("interrupted");
private void log(String msg) {
System.err.println(
msg + " on " + Thread.currentThread().getName()
+ " at " + System.currentTimeMillis());

Java.util.concurrent.ExecutorService inside J2EE Container
I want to use the JDK 1.5 concurrency class ExecutorService for concurrent execution of data-access logic inside my oc4j web-application.
I'm using the Factory Executors.newFixedThreadPool(6) for creating a thread-pool.
I know that it's not a good practice to create new threads inside a j2ee container.
Is there anything I have to think of or beware of??
Perhaps anybody here has experience using the java.util.concurrent.Executor inside OC4J or an other j2ee container.
Thanks, HaraldYes, I have used java.util.concurrent.Executor in weblogic 10 server.
You can really improve the performance of the EJB application if you use the thread pool carefully with limited size say 100 threads, by creating a single instance of thread pool for the whole J2EE application.
You have to control the life cycle of thread pool using the container's life cycle methods, create the thread pool only once and destroy every time you recycle your app.
Good luck with the implementation :) -

Concurrency exit, thread still running.
Hi all,
I am experimenting with Java SE 5 concurrency framework.
import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.concurrent.Callable;
import java.util.concurrent.ExecutorService;
import java.util.concurrent.Executors;
import java.util.concurrent.FutureTask;
public class ConcurrencyDemo {
/** Creates a new instance of ConcurrencyDemo */
public ConcurrencyDemo() {
FutureTask ft = new FutureTask<MyCallable>(new MyCallable());
ExecutorService es = Executors.newSingleThreadScheduledExecutor();
int i = 0;
while(i++ < 10) {
es.submit(ft);
//es.submit(ft);
try {
double d = ((Double)ft.get()).doubleValue();
System.out.println(d);
} catch(Exception e) {
System.err.println(e);
System.out.println(ft.isDone());
class MyCallable implements Callable {
public Double call() throws IOException {
return Math.random();
public static void main(String bicycle[]) {
calleeMethod();
private static void calleeMethod() {
ConcurrencyDemo cd = new ConcurrencyDemo();
}After executing the main in debug (in eclipse), i see two threads still running after F8,
Thread [pool-1-thread-1] (Running)
Thread [DestroyJavaVM] (Running)
Why the program is not exiting? Any idea?
Thanks,
NiravI think the process (javaw.exe) should have been terminated but i see:

Refresh of Webi in BI Launch Pad : "Failed to connect to the olap source"
Dear all,
I have a Web Intelligence document based on a BEx Query (BICS connectivity via an OLAP Connection configured with SSO)
Behaviour :
in Web Intelligence Rich Client (2 tier and 3 tier) : refresh is OK
in BI Launch Pad : refresh is not OK :
What can be the reason ? In my opinion SSO to BW is working fine because :
refresh in Web Intelligence Rich Client is OK
refresh of an Analysis Application (Design Studio) based on the same OLAP connection is working fine in Design Studio and in BI Launch Pad

Unable to deploy a war(includes web services)packaged into EAR on jboss 5.0
I am new to web services and wanted to develop one
I used the following softwares / IDE
Eclipse 3.4.2
Apache Ant 1.7
Jboss AS 5.0.1
JBoss ws 2.0
jbossws-native-bin-dist 3.2.1GA
sun jdk 1.6.0_12
So i started off quite well configuring all that is required to create a web service
i took the help of eclipse ide tools like create web service and create web service clients.
when i created the web project in eclipse i selected the option add project to ear.
and finally i start the jboss server with in eclipse and add project the ear file that contains the war file.
just when i thought all is fine the server throws an error
13:01:52,929 ERROR [AbstractKernelController] Error installing to Real: name=vfsfile:/C:/jboss-5.0.1.GA/server/all/deploy/TempWsEAR.ear/ state=PreReal mode=Manual requiredState=Real
org.jboss.deployers.spi.DeploymentException: Error during deploy: vfsfile:/C:/jboss-5.0.1.GA/server/all/deploy/TempWsEAR.ear/TempWs.war/
I have searched jira to find a solution for this , but i think i couldnt find an appropriate solution
I am not sure if the search critirea i entered was close to the issue.
The log pasted below is the one when i start jboss from with in eclipse .

Please help.When you say:
I then copied the 10.1.3 Standalone OC4J to the Solaris 5.9 box which already has JDK 1.5 Update 12 installed. We extracted the OC4J to its own directory , set the Java_Home and the Oracle_Home environment variables and were able to
startup the OC4J instance.
We had some issues when extracting OC4J to its directory but there were no errors displayed on the screen ... Only when we tried starting up the OC4J instance , it started complaining about missing XML files .. This was resolved by manually extracting the XML's from the corresponding jars and placing them in the proper directories ..
It sounds like you have some funky issues there with those missing XML files -- that is not expected or normal.
Do you mean you copied the same oc4j_extended.zip to the server and unzipped it, or you zipped up the directories you were using on the Windows box, copied that over, and unzipped it?
I don't know of any problems with Solaris, JDK5, U12.
What about if you do this to remove any issues with the remote copy aspect of the deployment.
1. Stop OC4J.
2. Manually copy CISS.ear to /home/aplperdev1/ssp_java/oc4j/j2ee/home/applications/
3. Edit the j2ee/home/config/server.xml file and add the entry to deploy the application
4. Edit the j2ee/home/config/default-web-site.xml and bind any web-modules you need.
5. Start the server and see what happens -- the application should be deployed.
Also, what happens if you use the $JAVA_HOME/bin/jar to try and view the contents of the CISS.ear file?

Image repaint preformance and threading
Folks,
I'm trying to make this sucker run faster.
My question is, can anyone please guide me, especially with regards synchronising the Threads more efficiently... I'm thinking of using join and i]notify to make the "navigator" threads yield to the swing threads, to give it a chance to repaint before continuing... does this sound sane to you?
Currently, without the thread.sleep it paints get the first "burst", and then nothing until the alrorithm has completed... exactly not what I wanted, because the whole point of this GUI is to watch the algorithm at work... sort of a "visual debugger"... I find that watching an algorithm play out helps me to "imagineer" ways of improving it... and in this case improvement means optimisation... it's all about getting from A-J faster than anyone else on the planet, especially those smarty-wishbone-legs C# programmers ;-)
The code is too big to post (darn that 7500 char limit!) so I'll split it over several posts here, and I've also posted it as a single download to [MazeOfBoltonGUI2.java|http://groups.google.com/group/comp_lang_java_exchange/web/MazeOfBoltonGUI2.java] on my google group (comp lang java exchange).
Cheers all. Keith.

}*... PTO ...*I'm persuaded that the main issue (no intermediate results drawn) is the improper use of SwingWorker.
When you've got over it, you may want to consider other smaller-effect optimizations:
Reconsider usage of an offscreen image*
public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
super.paintComponent(g);
if (image==null) {
image = (BufferedImage)createImage(navigator.maze.cols, navigator.maze.rows);
mazeColors = createMazeColors(navigator.maze);
this.draw(image.createGraphics());
((Graphics2D)g).drawImage(image, 0, 0, super.getWidth(), super.getHeight(), null);
}At first I didn't get why you wanted to draw an offscreen image, then paint it to the screen, all that in the EDT.
After reading the draw() method more closely, I guess you want to ease the coding of the scaling: you draw an image where one cell = one pixel, then paint the image, scaled to the panel's display size.
In terms of performance, I don't know how it stands:
On one hand, the image creation if lighter (1 pixel per cell). And you have a point that the built-in scaling offered by Graphics2D.drawImage(image, size) may be efficient. I can't comment on that, I hope the granphics and hardware acceleration folks will pop in the thread.
On the other hand, if the built-in scaling had poor performance, it may be good to try what "manual" scaling would bring you. That means, in a simplified version, skip the offscreen image creation, and draw directly on the paintComponent()'s Graphics2D argument. the drawing of a cell at coordinates c,r, for example, would look like:
g.fillRect(c*CELL_WIDTH, r*CELL_HEIGHT, WIDTH, HEIGHT);Performance apart, the scaling as you do it currently has functional drawbacks, if you want pathes as 1-pixel width lines over large cells:
- if the maze is smaller (in rows, columns) than the panel displaying it (in pixels), the cells will be scaled but the pathes too: so your 1-pixel lines appear as large as the cells. May or may not be a desired effect.
- if the maze is larger than the display panel, the cells are shrinked, fine, but the so are the path lines, to a point where they may be invisible (probably depending on color blending, I'm a n00b at graphics operations).
But maybe I misunderstood the need, and maybe the intended drawing of a path is actually the drawing of the rectangles of all its traversed cells, in special path colors?
Reconsider intermediate allocations*
Each paintComponent() call results in the allocation of a 2D-array of Color objects (method createMazeColors(Maze)).
I don't see what the mazeColors array brings you. I assume you wanted to decouple the determination of colors (depending on cell state) and the rendering of the colors: what does it bring: no performance advantage (on the contrary, it adds a 2D array allocation, and 2xN^2 2D-array access), and does not improve the code readability either (subjective rant, sorry).
Why don't you pass the Maze as an argument to the draw() method, and call the getColor(cell.ch) from there?
Side note, maybe a bit subjective: performance apart, the design of the usage of this mazeColor array is a no-go!
An instance method alters a static variable reference,which is used subsequently in another instance method, with no synchronization. The current code does that in a single thread (+paintxxx()+ is only called in the EDT), which keeps that safe (I'd dare to say: by luck), but considerations exposed below may have you refactor the design to introduce other threads, and may exhibit the thread-unsafety of this design.
Consider drawing the image in a background thread.*
Indeed the technique of drawing to an offscreen image is quite common, but it is often done to improve responsiveness (not raw performance) of Swing applications. Here is a resource about this (what the author calls the passive approach), although it doesn't use a background thread.
The idea is that if a paintCompobnent() methods involves lots of computation (arithmetics of traversing a 2D model, scaling things, etc.), this takes CPU times in the EDT, and all subsequent events (such as, a MouseEvent, but also other painting events) keep pending on the event queue, which is consumed by the single event-dispatch thread. The result is that the UI appear unresponsive, and painting of other areas may seem hung.
The idea is to move the computation to a background thread, which posts rendering to the EDT when the Image is ready to be displayed.
Of course this doesn't gain any CPU time. This only ensures the EDT uses a minimal part of this CPU (only render and image and process events), instead of performing the whole computation.
In your case you already have a background thread, and indeed an appropriate choice, a SwingWorker. The application of this technique would consist in calling the draw() method in the worker thread (in the update(Path) method), and invoke super.publish() only after the image has been updated. Note that the process(List<Path>) could then ignore its argument (you may reconsider the choice of type parameter of the worker), and simply get the latest version of the image attribute).
Of course in this technique, the offscreen image filling is called synchronously from the Navigator, so this halts the algorithm part itself, for the duration of the image generation. You may refine the technique by spawning a dedicated thread for the image generation - with subtle guard code to handle occasions when the algorithm goes faster than the image generation, and posts a new update(Path) while the image generation for the previous path has not completed yet...
Recuce the number of things to redraw*
Two parts:
first, depending on the number of cells and pathes, there may be (yet another) optimization, to not redraw the whole offscreen image, but only the cells/path that have changed in the last update(). In particular, if a path is not a line but a list of cells, then it's quite easy, reusing the current offscreen image, to only fillRect(...) the appropriate cells.
Second, if a path is not rendered as a thin line over larger cells, but as cells themselves rendered in special path colors, you may paint cells and path in one go: instead of drawing, first the cells, then the path, draw only the cells, electing the color using a decision method such as:
private Color getColor(Cell) {
if (cell.getPathState()!=NOT_IN_ANY_PATH) {
return getColor(cell.getPathState());
else {
return getColor(cell.ch);
}Of course this forces you to modify your data model, and update the new pathState as part of the algorithm (or better isolated, in the update(Path) method, before invoking the drawing machinery). Maybe that was the intention of the mazeColors array?
I haven't studied your other posts on the logic of the MazeOfBolton algorithm, so I don't know if it's acceptable for you that a cell appear to have only one path state, as opposed to one for each of the pathes that traverse it. This last trick may then seem incorrect, but please consider it as only a graphical information, and indeed your current image drawing draws only ONE path for a given cell (the last path in currentPaths that traverses this cell ). -

Can anyone help me, please?
SergioYou need to configure your config directory before you deploy. If you never configured v2 listener before then create a new folder like "c:\apex\config". Then use
java -jar apex.war configdir c:\apex\config
Then do your configuration as required and then deploy again. -
OBI 11g (11.1.1.6.0) coreapplication doesn't start
Hi,
I'm new with the weblogic/Fusion architecture and therefore somewhat clueless.
- fresh install of OBI 11.1.1.6.0 (simple installation) on windows 7
- during installation the 5 coreapplication processes won't start
- opmnctl startall on command line fails as well
- later I explored the Fusion Middleware Control and found the log entries below
- hints from this forum: no RPD upgrade involved; loopback adapter available
any help appreciated

this is a fresh install (Win 7), the default SampleAppLite is active and can be opened offline.
But all this doesn't bring me closer to an explanation why the coreapplication processes don't start. The thread you are referencing to confuses me. I see that I'm not the first one to encounter this problem. In the Fusion Control it's clear that the 5 processes failed at the start (I gave the log entry of one of them). What can I do and where can I look to find out the reason of this failure?
It seems to be a security issue:

Unable to pass parameter value from a Task flow to a Portlet
Hi All,
I'm using Jdev 11.1.1.6.0 and created a simple ADF application with one Taskflow which contains one JSF page to display the User details from the default LDAP configured within the Integrated Weblogic Server. The Taskflow have one Parameter to accept the User Email Id as input. Based on the given input value, we will fetch the User details from Weblogic server and display in the JSF Page. I created a portlet out of Taskflow by "Create Portlet Entry" and deployed it onto Integrated Weblogic server.
Portlet works well when executed standalone for the given User Email Id values as input.
Then I created a webcenter Application, On a page, there is a task flow that contains a form with one input text field and one Submit button, and a portlet (that displays the User details from LDAP) that listens for user input from the form. Clicking the Submit button sends the user entered texts to the listening portlet. This is a combination of contextual events established by the producer (task flow) and the wiring of the portlet based parameters from within the consuming page definition file.
The taskflow page which contains the form with Submit button, within the page defintion file contains an event binding (submitEventBinding) and a contextual based event (submitEvent). This event is tied to the ActionListener of the commandButton.
After added both the task flow and the portlet onto a page, I have subscribed to the contextual event of the task flow, and completed the wiring of the Taskflow and Portlet events together.
But in the Form, when I enter the User Email Id in the input filed and click the Submit button, I'm getting the below error -

Captcha Is Not Working When Consumed In Another Application As Portlet.
Dear all,
I have downloaded the sample captcha application from :
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/index-101235.html
Along with a litle documentation.
I convert the basic functionality,previously the captcha verification was at button click.
I convert it into the validator,now on tab out from the specific input field the captcha is getting verified.
I put one more input field in it,from which am inserting a record into the database.
then i created portlet entry for the captcha application.
register that with another ADF appplication as WSRP producer.
then consume that on to a JSF page in a pop up.
but when i run this JSF page,it opens the captcha in pop up(means portlet is coming fine),
but when i tried to verify the captcha functionality through it,
its throwing the error that, "connection is not found with the server".
I am developing the Consumer application(ADF) in jdev 11.1.1.3,with integrated weblogic server.with no extra libraries(only those which comes with the application template).
I am putting error logs in here,Please help me as this is the last bit which is remaining with me and its kind very important as we want o use this captcha on our newsletter subscription verification.
