Conditional text and table numbers

I have a source doc from which I am going to generate two user guides (I am new at this). I have two conditional tags set, which I plan to show/hide as required to generate the final PDFs.
First snag: I have a products specification table, which is different for each guide. Using auto numbers, I have created the first table (1-1).
Then I add the second table (prod specs for the other product). It of course shows up as table 1-2 (and all sequential tables will be misnumbered). Using the Show/Hide command, I see the correct table.
How do I get correct sequential table numbers for each end document?
Thanks very much.

>  ... FrameMaker help refers to these as "series labels."
Thanks for the further clarification, Mike.
Just poking around on this, it's unclear exactly how many different series labels one can have. Some sources say we're limited to 53:
default(no letter), A: to Z:, a: to z:
Some sources say it's 63:
default(no letter), A: to Z:, a: to z:, 0: to 9:
which also seems to work.
Curiously enough some other single characters appear to work as well. I just tried @:, #:, non-breaking hyphen (\x15) and generic currency symbol (\xdb) for example (this is in FM7.1, entered as \x hex codes). I suspect most basic Frame roman single "standard" characters might work, which would imply a possible 255 or so counters. Two-letter labels just get treated as literal text, as would any multi-byte Unicode I suspect.
Adobe has no published "best practices" for series labels, but if one searches around the web, a common theme develops on conventions. Any shop would be well advised to pick a convention, and (note to self) write it down, for example:
B: body (ordinary paragraphs)
C: call-outs
F: figures
H: headings (volume, chapter, section, etc.)
O: outline
S: steps
T: tables

  • Is there a tutorial/primer for working with conditional text and page numbering in book folders?

I'm ramping up on FrameMaker 9 and have been experimenting with using folders in book files. I like being able to add Frame files to the folder to organize content. But I also need to use conditional tags. In one version of my book, the entire contents of some files in one folder are hidden using conditional text. I can't figure out how to set the numbering for each file so that the page numbers adjust appropriately in this scenario. Or is it even possible to do this?
Can anyone recommend an advanced tutorial for using folders in Frame 9?

    Michelle,
It would be easier to maintain if you create a different book file that omits the entire "conditionalized" set of files.
See these Adobe TechComm blogs for some more background info on using hierarchical books and numbering behaviour:

  • Conversion with Conditional Text in Table

I'm taking the first steps in converting Unstructured Frame to Structure. One document is pretty clean except for one issue: my structure breaks around conditional text in tables. (The tables have a f3ew issues oftheir own, but the conditional text seems to compound the problem) I'm not sure how this should be dealt with. The structure tags are shown in the view below.
And here is the Structure View:
Is this something that can be set up with a qualifier, and if so, How? Also, in the conversion map table, Is there any order dependency, as well, concerning where the Conditional Text element appears?

    Jane,
As far as I am concerned I do not see anything unexpected. You get dotted lines in the Structure View apparently because the element <B1_Body1> seems not to be allowed in the Element <CELL>. It looks like you worked with the defaults of the Conversion Table. Have you created your own EDD and imported the Element Definitions? Is <B1_Body1> a legal element inside <CELL>?
From my experience the Conditional Text feature works very much in parallel to the element structure. It comes from the format-based world and the structure has no means to handle text conditions. If you want to work with text conditions in the future, you would use »attribute-based condition management« as made possible through the plug-in AXCM or FrameMaker’s built-in feature »Filter by attribute«. There is no built-in method to change text conditions into certain attribute values – but it is possible to automate this move via the FDK or FrameScript or ExtendScript (from FM10).

  • The infamous Conditional Formatting and page numbers

I've been digging through these posts and I see that conditional formatting and page numbers is a common topic, but none of the posts I've seen seem to come up with an answer to my suituation:
(Apologies in advance, I know this has been covered in many previous posts, just don't seem to be able to decipher a clear answer...)
I have a client who wants a boilerplate item - the word "OVER", to signify a miltiple page report - to be printer on the botton right of the page, BUT as usual there are seeveral conditions when they want it NOT to show.
First, they wnat it to only print when a specific Source is selected. That's a database field, and I have that conditional formatting piece working,
Second, they only want it to print on ODD numbered pages, I think I can use something like MOD(SRW.GET_PAGE_NUM(x),2)=0 to determine whether or not it's an odd numbered page, but havn't been able to try it yet,
Third, if the report is only a single page they don't want it to print at all. Not sure how to accomplish this, since the holy grail of the conditional formatting seems to be the total number of pages, and none of the posts I've seen have been able to get this.
    Any ideas?

The "Select All" button selects all cells that have the format you are looking at. It makes it so you can easily modify them all at once.

  • Conditional Text in Table - Problems with row height adjustment

    Hey there,
I’m german but I try to express my problem in english as good as I can. Not always easy with the different menu names. Hope you get what I want to say! :-)
As you can see in my attached screenshot, I placed text in a table.
Text height is set to: minimum 1,5 … so it adjusts to the amount of text.
This is what I want - it should adjust the height to the marked/aktivated conditional text.
It always adjusts the hight when I blind out the first line oder lines in between (e.g. line 2+3 of 4).
But if I want to blind out the last line(s), there is a ¶ at the end and a extra blank line with the #.
I know, the # stands for the following hidden Text, but why does it work with the red/green text.
There is also text hidden (green), but the mark # is right after the last word - not in a new line.
Has anyone a solution for this?
    Thanks in advance!

That's ok so far. A paragraph sign at the end of a text forces a new line.
To change that do the following:
For every condition you need another condition just for the paragraph sign that comes immediately after the condition. Not after every paragraph of one condition, but at the end of every consecutive numbers of paragraphs of the same condition.
So in your third example you'll need two conditions more:
    1. One for the paragraph sign at the end of condition "meaasurements"
    2. One for the paragraph sign at the end of condition "price 2"
Whenever you make the other conditions invisible, you also have to turn off the new conditions that only control the paragraph signs.

  • How to center title text and table across two columns

    Hello,
I want to be able to center a table and its title across a two column page. The pages where I want to do this contain text in both columns or text in the left column and graphics in the right. On the same pages as the text and graphics, I'd like to center, across both columns, a table with a title. What is the best way to do this?
If I insert the table in the left column, I can size it to fit over both columns but I can't type directly into the cells that cover the right column (I can type in the cells covering the right column if I Tab to them but it's tedious and doesn't seem right). With the table's title, I've tried using the Across All Columns paragraph setting, but the text stays in the column the paragraph marker is in.
We are using Frame 8 on Windows XP Professional. The Master pages are Right and Left pages that are set up with two columns, both tagged as A with the Autoconnect feature on so that the text flows from the bottom of the left column to the top of the right.
Please let me know what you think.
    Thanks,
    Tim

Yes, equal-sized columns. No, they're always equal. And that answers
David's question: you're using two frames because you want unequal columns.
Frame's paragraph-level column controls only work on columns made by
dividing a single frame into two or more columns. So you're back to
square one: you need two frames because your columns are unequal; you
need one frame so you can span columns.
Another possibility is that you might set up your document with a
sidehead column, but I hesitate to recommend this because I still can't
quite envision what your layout looks like. Any chance you can post a
    PDF somewhere?

  • Is it possible to flip text and tables 90º on a page?

Hi, I am working on a blank template word processing document that I imported from Word. It is in a US letter page layout. I am working with tables and text, and would like a few of the pages to be rotated into a horizontal format, so that the tables and text are formatted in a vertical direction.
I can do this in Word via the text direction option, I was wondering if and how I can do this in Pages. Sorry if I'm unclear, I am not sure what to call the format. If you imagine a standard table flipped 90º on a page, and with the text flipped 90º as well, that is what I am wishing to achieve.
    Thanks,
    Walt

Page orientation is set on a per-document basis & you cannot have both in the same document. However, you can create the same effect using text boxes & other floating objects rotated 90 or 270 degrees.

  • Conditional text and text inserts in FM 10

A perfect scenario, I thought, for conditional text: user guides for versions A and B of the same product, where most of the content is the same for both and some specific to one or the other. Some of the variants – such as "Connecting the power supply" – are at chapter level, others at paragraph level … so I've set prepared two .book files, and two chapter files which contain a single sentence plus the condition settings: show A, hide B or show B, hide A, respectively.
Extra finesse, just sprung on me: one chapters, which exists in an A and a B version, uses a text insert for some common paragraphs and one of these paragraphs now needs to be hidden util development is completed.
    Long context, then. Short problems:
selecting all the files in a .book and using File > Import formats (with only Conditional text settings selected) doesn't seem to be working
the conditional text in the insert refuses to go away, even with the relevant condition defined, and set to Hide, both in the insert and in the chapter that calls it
Final question: do I need to brush up on conditions, or is FM 10 not as reliable as it might be here?
Windows 7.0, one single FM installation of 10.0.2.419

    Niels,
When you imported the text insert, what did you set for its properties behaviour, i.e. to stay as per the source or to use the properties in the currrent document?
Are you using "Show as per Condition" or "Show as per Expression" to control the appearance of the conditional text?
In the insert source document, does the relevant paragraph hide when the condition is applied?
Is the condition name spelled identically (capitalization and spaces) in the inset and document?

  • Conditional Text and Image based on Excel column values

    Hi,
I have an excel file which contains data that needs to be imported/merged in an InDesign document. I have converted that file into a CSV... I'm unable to figure out how to create document using Data Merge after evaluating some conditions on data ... Example InDesing document layout is like below and will be repeated for say 200 data rows...
    Heading 1
    Text 1, Text 2
    Text 3
    Image
Heading 1, Text 1 and Text 2 even Image value will be set after checking some condition like below
    if ( column 'A' == ' ' && column 'B' == '1')
      Set 'Heading 1' == column X
    if ( column 'C' == '0' && file.exist(column C & '.jpg'))
       Set 'Image' == column C & '.jpg'
Can someone please guide me how to create document when CSV and Images are given based on this scenario? and even if Data Merge is the right solution for this.
    -- Thanks.

Data merge can only reproduce one layout, so you can't merge 200 rows and then change things unless you do it in separate documents and then combine them. Of course anything you can do via scripting or manually on a regular document you can also do to a merged document after the merge is complete.
It sounds like this is a multiple-records-per-page scenario. TO do that you set up ONE instance only of what you want to merge, in the upper left position on the page. ID then duplicates EVERYTHING that is on the page as many times as will fit using the spacing parameters you provide. This means you need to be careful with frame sizes so they don't extend beyond where they should, but it also means you can add a no-fill, no-stroke frame as a border or bounding box to make it easier to get a precise size to be used by each record. Frames in merged documents are not threaded from record to record (though there are methods for doing that after the merge, if desired), so deleting a record normally leaves a hole in the page.
If you have master page items, it's probably best to us the "none" master before the merge, then apply the correct master page after.

  • Text and table structure getting jumbled up in the smartform output

    Hi all ,
While viewing the print preview of a smartform output , i am facing  a strange issue.
The hardcoded text is getting jumbled up .For eg:"As soon as possible"  becomes " as possible . soon as"
The structure of the table is also getting reversed. That is the table is now getting displayed with the last couloum first. The data in the table is also coming in the reverse order.
While executing the smartform directly , the layout is coming in the proper order. But while executing this through a transaction (FINT) , this issue is coming up.The print program is a standard program.
I have tried deleting the window , copying it to a new smartform etc.I have also tried in different systems to check whether if it is an issue with the system.
If anyone has faced a similar issue , please let me know how to solve it.Thanks a lot in advance.
    Regards,
    Rashmi

    Hi
Please check the Printout rather the print Preview. and also check the Structure/table entries also that u printing and also if u r using template, then check the assignment 1 of 1 , etc to the texts.

  • Oracle Text and table joins

Is it possible to create an index on a view as opposed to a table, when using Oracle Text?

    Thanks for the earlier response.
I was also loooking at Oracle Ultra Search. I figured out that Ultr search provides out of the box query application to do free-form text search, parameterized search and so on....
I also read that Oracle Ultra search uses Oracle text as the underlying technology to do the search.
I have a requirement where most of my searches will be on structured data spread across multiple tables. But I also have a requirement to index some static content which resides on the file system.
Is it possible to mix and match query results i.e. first perform a search on the structured data and then perform another search on the static document data and then megre results from both and display back to the user?
    Thanks for the help

  • Excluded conditional text and new lines

Since my first major issue was answered so quickly and simply
on here (thankyou!), I thought I'd go for a second (can you tell I
didn't get any training in RoboHelp before being given charge of
    this project?)
If I tag small areas of text with a conditional tag (where,
for example, different clients want to call the product different
things), the printed documentation generated puts in a line break
where the text has been removed.
For example, the following bit of source (conditional tags
    marked with <>s):
    The <A>NameA</A><B>NameB</B> translates
between the client system and the underlying hardware
If generated with conditional tag A included would form the
    following Word output:
    The NameA
translates between the client system and the underlying
    hardware
Is there a way of stopping this, or should I simply stop
tagging areas smaller than complete paragraphs?

In TrueCode, check to be sure that there is not an extra P
tag inside the SPAN tag (should be like below).
    Good luck,
    Leon

  • Merge two columns of url/text and locator numbers

Want to merge a url - http://www.vimeo.com to a numbered vimeo film locator for the 'screeners sheet' for a film contest.
The current set up is: Column A - film title; Column B will be the Category; Column C - the url of vimeo with a / at the end to accept...Column D - the vimeo film locator number; Columns E-I will be the rating topics (originality, technical accuracy etc); Column J will contain the sum of the screeners ratings from Columns E-I.
There is no need to have totals at the bottom of columns just at the end of the rows. We have about 1000 films being rated for the Contest to win over $30k in Awards (sweet!).  Ultimately this list will be divided into Categories then 'shared' with the individual screening teams to view remotely through this spread sheet and rate the film work.
Oh the coup de gras is the merge needs to keep it as an active link to Vimeo (which doesn't happen in the =Concatenate(C,D) formula. The lyper link stays active when we manually input each letter/number - but for 1,000 films - that's a yikes amount of work. Gotta be an easier way!
    Thanks for your help!

Might need the mystics as well!
I'm having difficulty getting Numbers to recognize URLs to begin with, not just when they've been put together with the concatenation function (or the concatenation operator). I do have the feature turned on, but the recognition has been sporadic, to say the least.
Assuming you have that sorted out, this might be a profitable line of enquiry:
After joining the items using concatenation, select the cells now containing the full URL and Copy, then go to the Edit menu and choose Paste Values.
Can't test it myself, for the reasons given above, but the labor cost of the home test isn't unendurable.

  • Text and Table in the same line (Smartform)

    Hello,
we have a problem related with a smartform, it contains dynamic tables and we need to do a form like this:
    Text1     Wa_tab-f1[1]       Wa_tab-f2[1]
    Text2     Wa_tab-f1[2]       Wa_tab-f2[2]
    Text3     Wa_tab-f1[3]       Wa_tab-f2[3]
(As I cannot print the form well, I will try to explain it:)
Text1, Text2, Text3 don´t need frames!!  the other fields YES. I have been testing trying a lot of solutions but I have allways the same result: When I start to print frames for Wa_tab-f1 I allways get a new line....
Do you know a solution for this?
    Thanks.
    Fernando.
Edited by: Fernando Luengo on Oct 29, 2010 6:49 PM

    Hello Fernando,
why don't you simply define a table with 3 columns. In the line definition you paint a frame around the second and the third cell in the line (this might be a bit tricky. if you use the button for the frame around the cell for the 2nd and then for the 3rd cell it deletes the frame between the cells so better mark the cell sides one by one.).
