Conditional vs Business rule transitions

Any thoughts on when I should be using a business rule transition instead of a conditional? Any need to use this yet?
I understand the primary distinction is "dynamic" but am having a hard time getting my head around the difference without an example.
Cheers,
Andrew
Andrew

Andrew,
I think business rules are mostly useful when modeling a condition that is likely to change, and you want to make it easy to change the condition on-the-fly, without having to change and re-deploy the process.
A simple example is when there is a transition that must be followed only when a variable value is above some predefined value (for example, a manager must approve all orders above $ 10K).
If using a business rule, this "10K" value can be easily changed as needed.
The ALBPM documentation has some guidelines on when to use Business Rules (section "When to use Dynamic Business Rules):
http://edocs.bea.com/albsi/docs60/studio/designer/business_rules_editor/t_Using_Dynamic_Business_Rules.html
My example is taken from the one in the document describing ALBPM 6.0 new features:
http://edocs.bea.com/albsi/docs60/resources/ALBPM6.0_NewFeaturesOverview.pdf

  • Interactive activity with multiple business rule transitions

    I use BPM standalone and studio 10g. I create two business rules.
    Business rule 1: amount greater than 100.
    Business rule 2: amount greater than 300.
    An interactive activity has two business rule transitions and an unconditional transition. This activity is set to auto complete.
    In an instance, I set the amount is 400. Then, the instance goes business rule 1 transition.
    If I set this interactive activity to user select transition, the workspace lists 2 business rule transitions and let me to select one.

    Hi Ye,
    Eduardo brings up a good point. When you have multiple Conditional transitions leaving an activity, you can specify the order in which you want them to be evaluated by right mouse clicking the originating activity -> "Conditional transitions order". This is helpful because, even though several conditional transitions can evaluate as true coming out of a single activity - you still only want the work item instance to flow out of the activity via one of them.
    It would be good if you could do the same thing when you have multiple business rule transitions leaving an activity, but unless this has been fixed on a patch that I'm not currently using - you cannot do this with business rule transitions. Unlike Conditional transitions, when you have multiple business rule transitions coming out of an activity and more than one evaluates as true, you have no control over the sequence you want them to be evaluated.
    Guessing you've already done this, but I believe your options are to:
    1) Avoid having multiple business rule transitions coming out of a single activity or
    2) Do what Eduardo suggests and to make sure that none of the rules overlap (e.g. "amount > 100 && amount < 300") or
    3) Do Eduardo's other suggestion and have a cascading list of Conditional activities. Each Conditional activity has one unconditional transition (going to another Conditional activity) and one business rule transition. If the business rule is true, you're done. If it's not true then you continue to the next Conditional activity which also has an unconditional transition (going to another Conditional activity if you have 3 business rule transitions you wanted to evaluate) and a second business rule transition.

  • Business Rules in OBPM 10.3.1

    Hi,
    I have a question related to business rules in OBPM 10.3.1.
    Is it possible to run a query using the advanced editor in the business rule?, is it possible to execute a method inside a bpm object?
    Seems from what I have tested that only conditions against the project varibles can be used but probably I am wrong...
    Thank you very much

    No - you have it right.
    There is a very simple rules editor in Oracle BPM 10g that uses the project variables and business parameters (no instance variables). The good news is that it is very simple to use and it is easy for end users to edit the business rules.
    The only time I've seen it used is from inside a Business Rule transition. Never done it, but I think you could invoke them from a method if you use the Fuego.Rules.Rule component. Look at the fetch and evaluate methods.

  • Problem with Business Rules in OBPM 10.3.1 Enterprise for WebLogic

    We're having a problem with our Business Rules. We've updated two of our business rules (that are used by business rule transitions) in Studio; however, when we publish the updated process, the business rules are not updated. We cannot find anywhere in the Process Admin where to administer the rules to make sure they're overwritten.
    I've double checked, and the updated rule code is in the .project.xpdl, but for whatever reason, the rules are not being updated during the deployment. I'm sure that we've done this many times in the past, but for some reason, now it is not working.
    We're tried variations of the different versioning when we publish, and we've also tried to unpublish all of the older versions of our process, but it does not change the business rules. We can try to unpublish and undeploy, but it seems like we would lose all old instances of that process that are still running if we did that.
    Has anyone ever had this issue, or know if there is a way to effect the business rules via the process admin?

    I see what you're saying, but here's why it works the way you're observing it.
    Once deployed, the 10g business rules are edited by a business user (the owner of the rule). Changes in Studio that a developer makes to a business rule don't override the changes that the business user made.
    To let the business owner edit the rule, add a Global Interactive activity and change its property setting to edit the business rule. Put this activity in the role for the business owner (the person you want to edit the rule).

  • Is it possible to use "not" logical operator in a Business Rule Condition?

    This seems like a very simple request to me, but I cannot see any other questions/answers about it.
    Can I add a "not" to my Conditions in a Business Rule?
    My scenario is that I have a core Entity with a Type.  The Type is a domain attribute with a Code and Name.  The Code of the core Entity should in the form 'AA-9999', where 'AA' is the Code from Type.
    The idea is that I have a business rule with the condition "not
    Code starts with DBA.Type.Code" and the Action would be "Code is not valid".
    Is this possible?  Is there a better way of implementing this?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Yeah! This is the board in question! But it has lots of versions, like K7T Pro, K7T Pro2 (my one!), K7T Turbo, K7T Turbo Limited Edition and K7T Turbo2, all of then are WS-6330 Lite...   They phisically diferent, but the BIOS seens to be the same... I want to know is this feature in the newer version is going to work or not on my board (MS 6330 Lite K7T Pro2 Ver:1) ....
    Doesn´t matter what board you choose (PRO, PRO2, Turbo, Turbo2) the MSI page shows all the same BIOS to Download... But I think that this feature is only applicable for K7T Turbo2, but will make no difference in my! At least that´s what I think...
    But you´re right! The board that I have is the one on the link you said!
    Thanks!

  • Query on handling else condition in Oracle Business Rules.

    Hi all.
    I am working on Jdeveloper 11.1.1.1.0 Business Rules. While creating rules... i am able to write if conditions around the facts and attributes and also replicate the same using decision tables and is able to derive the action.
    My Question is.. can i write an else condition which should be executed when none of the if condition are matched. If we can how... Instead of else condition, is there any way that we can initialize the facts and attributes to be derived to a default value.
    Please help me guys in this... If this is not the right foru,... please redirect me to the correct one.. coz i couldnt find a forum for oracle business rules..

  • Help: Oracle data transition with enhancing business rules

    The work referred here is sql load flat file to Oracle table. However, due to the possible data errors, the flat file may not be able to load to Oracle table totally. The type of errors involve like unique constraint, invalid characters etc. Instead of sql load direct to the destination table, I am planning to load to a temporary table. The temp table has flags to each potential field which needs to enhance the business rules. The diagram looks like:
    Flat-File -> temp_table -> dest_table
    Take an example:
    temp_table with col_1, col_2, flg_1, flg_2
    dest_table with col_1, col_2
    temp_table will take all data from Flat-File with all varchar(x) fields.
    What I plan to is to write stored procedure to move the correct data from temp_table to dest_table. If there are any errors, through a trigger to update the temp_table flags. If there are no errors, the record will move to dest_table and the corresponding records will be removed from temp_table. A serve package utilizing Oracle FORMS will take care of the error data.
    I'd like to hear all suggestions before I implement this.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Jimmy

    Hi Jimmy,
    Another approach could be to move data from temp table to dest_table using [DML Error Logging|http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/06-mar/o26performance.html]
    Or maybe even the [Badfile and External Tables|http://www.gennick.com/ETLandBad.html]

  • Get cell value in Planning Data form and using it in a business rule

    Hi Everybody,
    if i set the data type of an Account Member as text, is there a way to get the value inserted by the user in a dataform, turning it as dimensional member and using it in a business rule?
    So, if the user insert the value "USA" in a cell, can i use any functions to tell essbase that "USA" is a dimensional member and then using it in a business rule, for example in a cross-dimension like Period1->FY12->USA?
    I tried to use the function @Member and it doesn't work, but i'm wondering if there is a way that can let me get the value inserted and use it just like a dimensional member. What are the ways that can let user input value that can be used in a business rule? I think one is by using SmartList, is there any other ways? Maybe using variables?? As an alternative i tried to use Prompt Variable but there are too many members on which the rule must run.
    Please help me, i wanna know if i can or not let the user input the member on which the rule must run...
    Thank all guys
    Bye
    Maurizio

    Thanks EW for your answer,
    YesI could use SmartList even if i think it's very tough to handle. My experience on using SmartList in caclc script is not so good. I try to enter in details of my requirement:
    I have 500 account members.
    For each one, I have to calculate the monthly budget by sharing the amount among the months. The user wants to calculate it on the basis of the actual flow(over the months) of an unspecified account of the prior year. The unspecified account must be inserted in a data form.
    So, i could use a Smart List but it colud be of 500 elements and then i should make a rule with as many IF as how many are the accounts. Or im wrong? The only way to use smart list dynamically in a business rule is by referring its values in a IF condition. Or i'm wrong.
    I tried to use execution variable ma it seems don't work. In this case the user must pay attention to write the account correctly, otherwise as you say the rule doesn't work.
    The value in PD0A020 is "PD0A000" (that is a dimensional member). The value in PD0A000 is "hello". In PD0A040 the rule returns "PD0A000" and not "hello" as i would. The function @Member appears to be not able to catch the dimensional member by the value in PD0A000.
    {Example}="test"->"Input"->"Scenario_test"->"FY12"->"PD0A020";
    Fix("test1","Input","Scenario_test","FY12")
    "PD0A040"=@Member({Example});
    endfix
    So, my doubt is: is it possible for Essbase/Planning to use the value inserted in a data form and to turn it in a dimensional member? What are the practicable ways to let the user input/choose the member on which makes the rule run?
    Thank you Ew, thank you guys

    OK I bit the bullet and contacted support on this one.
    There is a known issue with MDS 2012 and business rules with a combination of "must be unique" attributes. If you do not list the attributes in the same order that they were created you will get the generic error I cited. At first they told me it must be
    in the same order the attributes are in and that worked on one entity but not the other. The difference was that in the second entity I previously rearranged the attributes in question. Once I changed the order in the business rule to reflect the *original*
    order it worked like a champ.
    Hopefully this helps save someone some time and money.

  • Request for the business rule solution to my requirement in SOA suite PS5

    Hello Experts,
    Could anyone please help me with an easy solution to build the business rule solution to my requirement in SOA suite 11.1.1.6.0?
    When I get the Input (Request), I need to get the output (Response) as below
    Request                     Response
    Brand1           ->           XYZ
    Brand2           ->           MNO
    Brand1 & Brand2      ->           PQR
    I created a bucket set with Brand1, Brand2 and linked to the input value. I build the rule set and I got rules at conditions tab like R1 - Brand1, R2 - Brand2 and R3 - Brand1, Brand2. when i tried to add action on this rule at R1, i got conflict with R3. same is the case with R2 also.
    Can anyone please let me know how can I resolve this?
    Thanks

    The first one is answered by Arghadip. Regarding the second one, what do you mean by incorporate (or what other term do you mean?). You want a batch program in your workflow? Why do you need a batch program? You can create an event when a person is fired (just like when he is hired) and wait for this event in the workflow. So no need to create a batch program (which would use basically the same solution, an event).

  • Problem executing Business Rule in BPM 11g

    I've createad one business object CPFBObject which contains several attributes. My requirement is that if relationship is parent the it goes to human task otherwise to end. for thet I've written the business rule which is as not working properly. Please suggest what to do?

    Hi
    I do not know why business rule is not working. But, if "relationship" is an attribute of the Business Object "CPFBObject", then you can also use an exclusive gateway to perform the conditional branching logic. See this example image: http://imgur.com/AhePz

  • Business Rule - Problem with Validation Execution

    I'm running into an issue where conditional Validation Execution is not working as expected. The background is that i have an Entity Object containing a few string attributes on which i must apply Regular Expression business rules to make sure only characters in a certain range is set. I am using a Not Matches regex on the following:
    .*[^\u0020-\uD7FF].*1 attribute is required, 2 are optional. The problem I am experiencing is with the 2 optional attributes.
    Since these are optional, I intended to use the Validation Execution tab so that the Rule is executed only when the attribute is not null. For example, here is what i tried for an attribute named Comments:
    Comments != nullNo validation occurred when I entered an invalid value, such as a string containing line breaks, in a corresponding ADF Faces page. For the heck of it, i experimented by setting the validation execution to the opposite of what i should be - in other words, trigger validation if the attribute is null, such as:
    Comments == nullWith this, the validation occurred as expected.
    Is this a bug, or am I misunderstanding something? I'm not particularly good with RegEx - is it possible this is due to some nuance of the expression?
    Version: JDeveloper 11.1.1.6.
    Thanks-
    -george

    i'm not sure if this is the correct answer or a workaround to the issue i had asked about. Given that caveat, if anyone else ever runs across this thread, what i found worked was to not use the attribute name in the Validation Execution tab's expression, but instead to just newValue as in the following:
    newValue != null

    Hi,
    Just checked my old backup file and you are right. It does not have the business rules. One reason I can think of is they are not part of UJFS structure and in fact uses a table driven. All the rules can found with the tables UJP*.
    You can print them into html and copy into an excel. From there I think you have to manually copy into the target system. If you are using transport route, you do not have worry as the transports cover the table driven rules with the required config in the UJT_TRANS_CHG table.
    Thanks,

  • Problem with Business Rules

    Hi,
    I just started with a simple Business rules sample.
    All the time only the first condition in the rule set seem to be executed and the result is same inspite of conditions not matching the first condition.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Prabu

    Maybe not, the rule may be working as designed. If you are doing a simple rule you also need to implement the negative, e.g.
    if I have a rule that price must be greater that $1000
    if price > 1000 then ...
    The rule will only activate for prices greater than 1000 what about less than?
    so you need to implement the negative
    if price <= 1000 then
    cheers
