Configuration of standard server, 10.5.4 install disk, small office, DNS

I've reinstalled more times than I care to count.
Been on the phone with support people- no one seems to know how to install standard in my config.
I have a fixed business class IP-
it connects from their modem to my Apple Extreme basestation N gigabit
which then connects to a 24 port gigabit ethernet switch.
The server is manually mapped by MAC address to 192.168.0.2
In the standard setup-
It asks for login to Apple Extreme basestation N gigabit- I provide- password- then configure manually (rest of computers use DHCP)
I supply.
Manual configured ip at 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
router 192.168.0.1
left DNS blank.
Standard install.
The ethernet is configured to run through an ethernet card from my xserve- since the internal one doesn't seem to register.
I used the MAC address for the machine in the Basestation to route to this mac address and reserve .2
once it gets completed- it whines: server cannot connect be found on the network check that the server hostname
etc.
System prefs> Network settings- DNS I've tried with 192.168.0.1, I've tried with 127.0.0.1 and with 127.0.0.1, 192.168.0.1
nothing works. I've even tried with 192.168.0.2
It can't find server.name.lan (note I changed my actual 3 letter name for "name" in this example)
it can find 192.168.0.2 sometimes - but slowly.
I've reinstalled this about 50 times now.
I've even done it with someone on the phone-
at no time have we had:
Jabber working at server.name.lan
server.name.lan resolving to the wiki page
calender working
and vpn enabled.
I've lost countless hours with this-
My employees haven't been able to work at times (like tomorrow morning- because we keep all our files shared on this server).
this is getting to be uber ridiculous.
suggestions?
The last install- I tried it name.private
going to terminal- it still says to repair dns.
There is a spot in the airport Internet settings for domain name- should I put in name.private or server.name.lan?
I've also tried the disconnect the ethernet cable routine- that one tech had me do-
I now know how to go into terminal and check- using sudo ipconfig -checkhostname
where I have not been able to get the two entries- always get the message to repair dns.
This shouldn't be that difficult.
Thanks in advance

The most obvious problem from your posted details is:
left DNS blank.
You can't do this. You HAVE to have working DNS somewhere.
For the initial setup this could be a DNS server managed by your ISP. If you're configuring internal DNS then it could be your internal DNS server (or even 127.0.0.1), but not until that server is up and running.
I used the MAC address for the machine in the Basestation to route to this mac address and reserve .2
I don't understand this statement. MAC addresses don't (or, at least, shouldn't) come into the picture at all.
System prefs> Network settings- DNS I've tried with 192.168.0.1, I've tried with 127.0.0.1 and with 127.0.0.1, 192.168.0.1
nothing works. I've even tried with 192.168.0.2
192.168.0.1 won't work - that is your base station and your base station is not a DNS server.
127.0.0.1 won't work until you configure and start up the DNS server in Mac OS X Server.
192.168.0.2 won't work either - for the same reason as 127.0.0.1. It will work once you configure the DNS server on this machine.
So it sounds to me like your first order of business is to setup the DNS server. During the installation process you were asked which services to run. Make sure you enabled DNS then use Server Admin to configure your DNS zone.

  • How to install and configure NI Visa Server without having to install MAX?

    Hi,
I need to install NI Visa Server on a computer so that remote systems can connect to the devices connected to it. However, the flash-drive on the computer is marked as "removable media" by the operating system which is causing the MAX installer to error out (this is a known problem with standard windows installers and removable media).
Before pursuing a hardware change, I was wondering if there was a way to install and configure NI Visa Server on the embedded computer without having to install or configure through MAX?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hello!
Your system should appear under remote systems and then you can right click on the software folder and install software. Our 8145s for instance have compact flash drives and this process works. Could you give me more details on your hardware? Are you getting an error message when you try to install the software?

  • How to install and configure the SQL Server

    Hi All,
We have to install SQL server in the new server because the old server is crash and need to upgrade. Please advice How to install and configure the SQL Server to run SAP Business One 8.8 successfully and what part we do have to give attention.
    Kind Rgds,
    Steve

    Hi,
    Try this solution:
The step-by-step installation guide can be found in the documentation included in the installation media. (\Documentation\SystemSetup\AdministratorGuide_SQL.pdf).
Below are some important parts that you should pay attention to during the Installation process.
    Resolution
Collation setting: It must be set as SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS,even the company DB is non-english location. The company DB will be created as corresponding collation settings automatically.
Instance and TCP Port : It is recommended to run SBO on default instance and TCP port 1433. Otherwise, some optional components such as B1i may not work properly.
Native Client: SQL Server Native Client should be installed on every client machine to enable the ODBC connection to DB server.

  • How to install and configure ms exchange server 2007 both role hub and edge transport role in one network

How to install and configure ms exchange server 2007 both role hub and edge transport role in one network

    Hi,
Edge role is design for perimeter networks, to keep security risks minimum.  So it’s not recommended to have edge role in internal network. Must have separate network or subnet for edge services.
If you are playing around it in labs, then you can put edge role within same subnet as other exchange roles and no specific requirements in that case.
    Thanks.

  • Help with Proper DNS Setup for Leopard Standard Server Setup

    Hello All,
    Problem Description-
I was reviewing some training today on DNS setup and checking for proper setup with the sudo changeip - checkhostname tool and I seem to have an incorrectly configured DNS setup. So I need some help on correcting it. When I go to the "Server Preferences" tool I cannot log in using apple.ourdomainname.com instead in order to use the tool I have to input localhost as the server name. Now I just thought that the system was broken or something and with the help of my training I now see it's a DNS problem. I thought I had everything proper since I followed the steps of creating proper DNS/RDNS entries with my ISP. Now I am stuck wondering what else isn't working properly due to the DNS issue. Thanks in advance.
    Technical Info-
My ISP provides us with 5 static IP's and we have asked them to create entries and verified the setup of apple.ourdomainname.com = x.x.x.x which is one of our public IP's assigned currently assigned to the WAN port of our Apple Airport Extreme. We have also had them create a PTR record which also is present, verified and functional. Our MacMini running 10.5.5 is connected directly to one of the ethernet ports on our Apple Airport Extreme which is our NAT/Firewall for the LAN. So during the setup of the Standard Server install the OS configured the Airport with the required ports for chat/web/vpn. And mobile Mac's can VPN in and gain folder access and web works fine too. We don't use the e-mail portion so I can't say how that works. The server is using the DNS of 10.0.200.1 which is the IP of the Airport and the airport is programmed with the DNS of OpenDNS servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. The reason for this whole long shpeal is that I want to give as much technical background as possible for the best possible help.
    Thanks
    DM

  • Mac OSX 10.5.3 Leopard STANDARD Server CHANGEIP questions

I am confused on how to check and change TCP/IP addresses via Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.3 server in STANDARD mode.
I watched the great Sean Colins Lynda.com tutorial on OSX 10.5 Server, but i still have a few questions with how to deal with DNSs and CHANGE IP
Here is the hardware & scenario:
-- G5 Silver Doors Tower with 1.7GB Ram and Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard 10 user server
-- Cablevision ISP with there BOOST service [that allows you to set-up a server and does not block ports 25 or 80]
-- NO Static IP from Cablevison [they change it once in a blue moon when they want so I rely on DYNDNS below]
-- Apple Airport TimeCapsule [with all latest firmware updates etc]
-- DynDNS account and client software installed on server to update the DYNDNS severs with the current Cablevisions TCP/IP address
    Problem and Question
    ===
Three times a year I will need to move this server. 1/3rd of year and at setup it is on residential Cablevision Account and Apple TimeCapsule Router, Then 2/3 of year server will be behind two funky large networks where I will have to set-up manual IP, DNS, and proxy info
I need to know what the proper process is when I want to move the Mac. When the 10.5.3 STANDARD Server is in STANDARD mode can I just change the TCP/IP address in SYSTEM PREFERENCES...NETWORK ? Do I have to run the CHANGEIP command Afterwards [or Before]
Also, for DNS config on server does it always need to have the loop back self reference [127.0.0.1] or can it just be configed from the Airport and/or network?
And, big problem for now... dumbly when I set-up the OSX Server on the TimeCapsule Network I forgot to write down the TCP/IP address used. Now I am on the second funky corporate network and can't use the command:
    sudo changeip - idon't_knowip 10.0.96.48 server.cmtenyoffice.com server.cmtenyoffice.com
Also, another question for the HOSTNAME... should it be HOSTNAME or FullyQuallifiedDomainName?
My HOSTNAME seems to be "CMTE-Server.local" but I specified the FullyQualifiedDomainName to "sever.cmtenyoffice.com"
NOTE: I do NOT have this domain registered and am not yet hosting a website or email server on this machine, but I may soon register the domain and then point MX records etc to the DYNDNS record that would point to server
    Anyhow, to wrap up,
1- What is the proper process for changing the TCP IP address with a Leopard 10.5.3 STANDARD SERVER?
2- What do I do with CHANGEIP command if I don't know what the STARTING TCP/IP address is?
3- For HOSTNAME should I be entering the unregistered FQDN or the "CMTE-Server.local"
Thanks for any an all info.

    Hi Eric
You use the one its using now.
If the Server is Standalone issue:
sudo changeip - oldIP newIP oldhostname newhostname
Even if nothing changes you can still issue the command, supply the system admin name and password and let it do its stuff. Prior to doing this you must change the address in the Network Preferences Pane. Although not necessary it does not hurt if you restart afterwards.
If the Server is an OD Master issue:
sudo changeip /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 oldIP newIP oldhostname newhostname
You will not only be prompted for the system admin name and password but also for the Directory Administrator name and password. With both command you will get feedback as to what is going on. Obviously you will see more changes made if its an LDAP Server. Hostname will be the fully qualifed domain name (FQDN) defined in the DNS Service eg: myserver.mydomain.com.
    man changeip
For usage. Actually prior to doing any of this and incidentally a good way of finding out not only the hostname but also the IP address associated with that name issue:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You should run this before/after making the change. If everything checks out OK it should report 'the names match, there is nothing to change'. This is a good a test that lets you know its worked. However its not the only test. I would run host, nslookup and dig also. Next set a client to use the Server for its DNS and then test connectivity with firstly the Server's fqdn and lastly its IP Address.
Ultimately the truest test is: "what impact has the change made on clients accessing the Server and its Services successfully?"
If the Server is a mature OD Master (possibly PDC as well) with DNS, Mail, AFP, SMB, iCal and any other 2-3 additional services configured and running then issuing changeip may appear - superficially - to have worked. Occsasionally - in my experience - serious problems begin to develop with the LDAP database to the extent where the only 'cure' is to demote to Standalone, sorting out DNS and re-promoting. This can have serious repercussions if you have not made preparations to limit the re-build time prior to changing the IP address and issuing the command. Equally it can be successful. However can you take the risk?

  • Standard Server installation while connected to Airport Extreme

    Hi,
I'm an advanced Mac user but I'm very new to using Server and have a question about initial installation & setup. I've search for info about it here and elsewhere but can't find a definitive answer.
    Here's the scenario...
I'm installing Server on a new Mac Pro that is connected by ethernet to a fairly new Airport Extreme. (The Airport Extreme already provides wireless access for our small office, as well as sharing a Xerox printer via Bonjour. All this works fine.) I'm opting to using the "Standard" configuration of Server during the installation. During the installation process, the installer asks for the password for the Airport Extreme and seems to adjust/confirm some settings on the Extreme. The installer gets DHCP info from the Extreme and seems to set up Server fine... That is, I get no error messages throughout the entire process and once done the Server can access the internet. Also, all clients in the office can bind to the Server without any error messages at all.
(For what it's worth, in the Airport Extreme's settings -viewed with Airport Utility- there is an IP reservation made automatically for the Server. I'm guessing this is part of what's happening during the installation as I didn't do it manually. Also, doing a Lookup in Network Utility with either the reserved IP address or Server name returns the other successfully.)
The problem arises when I try to setup a CalDAV account on a client's computer. I'm not sure exactly how it's supposed to work, but I keep getting error message after error message when trying to find the Server. I realize that this particular problem might be best dealt with in the iCal Server forum, but even before I get to that, I'd love to know...
*Must I assign a static IP manually to the Server during the installation process or is the installer getting/setting up the address it needs to have all the Standard services work properly?*
I'm hoping that someone here can answer this definitively.
    Thanks!
    -Neil

You won't actually connect using a IP address through the browser URL. I access my external from Finder, Open a new window, go up to Finder then preferences, click Sidebar the button at the top and make sure you have a checkmark under Devices for External disks. Then in your original finder window under shared you should see the name you gave your external drive or the original factory name. After that if you click it and have setup a password in Airport for the external drive it should prompt to connect or hit connect as and put in that password

  • File Server Configuration on Windows Server 2012 R2

    Dear All,
I need your support in my scenario.
    Work Environment:
I work in a company where we have multiple departments.
    My Department is elearning.
All Departments get Internet and Network Access from IT Department.
    My Department Requirement:
I Need to Install and Configure File Server and assign storage space for 25 users for storing their respective work files.
    Availability:
I have installed windows 2012 R2 on my physical server which is connected to my local network
    My Question:
Do I have to make my server a DC to Install and configure File Server for my requirement?
If No, then How can I fulfill my requirement ?
    Kindly revert.
    Best Regards,
    Ahmed

Do you already have an AD domain in your environment? If yes then simply add your File Server as member server and use your AD user accounts to grant the required accesses.
    If no then you can:
Create local user accounts and provide access using them
or make your server a DC, create AD accounts and then grant the required accesses
Before proceeding, it would be better to see with your IT department what is already available and their recommendations to manage your needs.

    Hi Ganesh,
In order to access the Visual Administrator, go to Start > Programs > SAP J2EE Engine > Visual Administrator. After you login, you will see 2 nodes i.e. Dispatcher and Server. Expand the Server node. Then go to "Services" and expand it. Then go all the way down to "TREX Service". Then on the right hand side, go to the property "nameserver.address" where you will key in "tcpip://<nameserver>:<port>". Then hit "Update" and click on the "Save" button. Then when you go to TRex Monitor, you should be able to see the Name Server running. Hope this helps.

  • How to configure Oracle HTTP server

Hi, I installed APEX 3.0 in Oracle 10.2.0.2 database. I installed HTTP server from Oracle 10.2.0 database companion CD. The problem is I am not sure which conf file I need to modify as in the installation document, it only shows steps for how to configure HTTP server 9.0.3/11g/Oracle Application Server 10g. Anybody knows where to get the right doc? Thanks.

    Hi,
Configure the Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) from the companion CD is the same for other OHS (apart from OHS 9.x where it uses wdbsvr.app).
So just follow the install guide from

  • Configuring a Directory Server for Digital IDs and Certificates

My company is moving toward using electronic signatures for internal documents. All of the users are on XP machines and have Acrobat Professional 8.0 installed. So far, I've been manually adding trusted IDs for each person who will be receiving signed documents that need to be validated. I'd like to make this a little easier by storing everyone's certificates on a server (Windows 2003) so that people can just go out there and add them all as one .fdf file. What I'm wondering is, what is the difference between doing it this way versus going through Acrobat and configuring a directory server? Will it work either way?

  • SBS 2003 to 2011 Migration - Exchange Server 2010 cannot be installed

    Hello,
We have a Small Business Server 2003 server that we are trying to migrate to SBS 2011 using the out of the box migration process. After the install, the SBS console showed a couple installation issues - the big one turned out to be "Exchange Server

Here is the end of 'ExchangeSetup.log' showing various error messages:

I should add that the source server's AD configuration might not be perfect due to this being the second attempt at a SBS 2011 migration install.
I'd be grateful for any help I can get on this as SBS migration has been plauged with multiple setbacks already. I really need to get this done! ;)
    Thanks,
    Voon

Thank you Larry and Al for your replies.
    I used the 'official' migration
    guide plus this page (http://www.techieshelp.com/step-by-step-guide-to-migrating-to-sbs-2011/)
as my migration references. The SBS migration prep tool gave no errors on the source server when I ran it.
I have a full system drive image plus a a system state backup from before migration. Though I am very loathed to rollback the migration and attempt a new one - again. I will do some searching to see if I can resolve the Exchange server problem and continue
the migration/installation. If not, then its a system state restore for me. One of Al's links had a resource for doing a thorough check of AD - which something I'd run if I have to another migration attempt.
I am also really tempted to open up a paid MS support ticket for them to help me fix this problem. :)
