Confirming my worst fears

I've been having some problems with my MacBook recently and want to see if my fears have come true.
For the past few weeks, the headphone jack has only had audio on the left side, now yesterday my daughter was playing with the keyboard then suddenly I saw a grey screen with two colums of black and white characters. I pulled the battery and restarted the machine. Later on I was working on it when it shut down for no real reason. I went to turn it back on and the optical drive would go make sounds like the computer was stating up (not through the entire process) then woulf make the same sound again completeing the ejecting and that would repeat without stop. The computer would never come on and the area near the motherboard (sorry for the PC lingo) would be very hot. I've reset the SMC which has not helped.
I hope that this is not a motherboard issue, but I'm afraid that it is. Am I correct in this thinking?

Welcome!
Sure sounds like the logicboard has rolled over, but try testing with one RAM stick at a time - RAM can also cause such an issue.
I would take it into your local Apple Store or Apple Service Provider. If you don't know where they are, you can locate a one here: http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
You can also call AppleCare at 1-800-275-2273, but you may be charged if your Apple product is out of warranty.

  • ...confirm my worst fears..

TiBook is suddenly producing an intermittent whining, growling noise, particularly during especially processor-heavy activities (games, p-shop, video, etc). I'm afraid this is the beginning of the 'death whine' sound of a failing drive..? I replaced the hd about 4 years ago after the original one failed, and it seems to me this is a horribly familiar noise.
Disk Utility says: "Volume passed verification" (but I did not run it from the start up disks, only from the desktop app). Also ran Disk Warrior, which stated: "This hard drive's built-in diagnostics indicate the drive is functioning normally."
Still, there's the noise. The body feels only normally warm, not terribly hot. The noise doesn't begin immediately, but it starts up after some work or activity, as I said, especially processor-heavy stuff. The speed slows but not dramatically. It has trouble running video, but I think that's a factor of its age and small processor. If I close the lid the noise stops.
Let me know if this sounds like a drive entering its death throes. Eeek. Thanks.

You just know it's watching and waiting for that.
But the fan is an interesting thought. The noise is in fact at the right rear. Running on battery now; haven't heard it yet, but we'll see.
Sounding more like the fan. The one in the right rear normally comes on only with the power adapter connected. The fact that you don't hear the sound while running on batt is a pretty good indicator, especially if you connect the power adapter and the noise starts.
Pop open your keyboard and have a better look/listen.

  • Short-sighted approach to Bluetooth and Wi-fi.

I've just bought an Ipad - which I think is a truly amazing bit of kit. However within 36 hours I've discovered some very basic shortcomings in the software design in respect to both Bluetooth and Wi-fi. I was so shocked at their absence that I ran these past the Apple Support team who confirmed my worst fears.
The Ipad Bluetooth will not work with my Blackberry 9000. The Blackberry pairs with the Ipad but the Ipad syncs with nothing. Given that Blackberries are probably the most used smartphone in the business community - this seems like a really serious oversight?
Wi-fi printing I'm told only works with Airprint 101 - but then is limited to a narrow range of HP printers. Why? I have an HP Photosmart 3310 which is wireless and can accept wireless connectivity from any Windows based PC. I did evetually find a messy solution to the problem which I'll detail because I'm sure there are clever enough people working at Apple who might just be able to fix it better!!
You need to create a directory in the Programs Directory called 'Airprint'. You then need to download the three files that Airprint 101 uses and locate these in the directory. As soon as you rum 'Airprint.exe' your Ipad will show you any printers that are attached through wi-fi. However you must keep the directory with the Airprint files open because as soon as you close it - the printers disappear.
I improved the situation slightly by creating a task in the Task Sceduler to run when the PC opens and which automatically runs the 'Airprint.exe' file. Now all I have to do is to ensure that my Windows PC is on befire I use my Ipad!!
There has to be a better way than this and I feel it detracts from the Ipad as a potentially super piece of kit.
Perhaps someone from Apple would like to look into this and give some feedbasck? Thanks.

No. It doesn't work with any cell phones.
The iPad Bluetooth works with only with headphones and keyboards.
Wi-fi printing I'm told only works with Airprint 101
Dunno what *AirPrint 101* is. AirPrint was incoporated into iOS 4.2.1
but then is limited to a narrow range of HP printers. Why?
Besause printer manufacturers have not updated their printer firmware to speak "AirPrint". It is up to them to make their printers compatible, not he other way around.

This has nothing to do with Apple. It's somebody hack to get iPads to print through a computer.
AirPrint does not talk through a computer.
It talks directly to the printer on the network.

For almost a year now my first Apple purchase (iPod Photo) I have been amazed me with Apple's software reliability, even on my PC....until now.
Now after down loading iTunes 6.0.018 tonight, it now regularly crashes when trying to import songs from CD. It's now been the 6th time iTunes has crashed while trying to import songs on the first CD I've tried since installing the newesy iTunes version.
Please tell me I'm not the only one experiencing this issue.
    With much frustration,

  • No enhanced podcast with iPad

I've searched around and found a couple of posts in the iPad discussion that seem to confirm my worst fears: you cannot view an enhanced podcast on an iPad!!!! It's a brick! This must be because the "ipod" app I guess cannot carry out the high-tech sequencing of still graphics with the audio. Or did I miss something and Steve Jobs just announced that the iPad will have no artwork created after 1500, lest anything later be construed as too flashy? Apple, please give us back enhanced podcasts-- it's a fair trade for taking the iPad leap of faith.

I do enhanced podcasts for my online students with Keynote and Garage band. I created an .m4p and it plays FINE on my iPod touch, so I can't imagine why it won't work on an iPad.
I get the Episode artwork but none of the chapters. The tracks all show up in the list view, but no images. Also, if I display the Episode artwork, I can't get the controls to appear. Bug, bug, bug.

  • Shortcut Method for Replace Pages dialog box

What is the keyboard shortcut method for bringing up the Replaces Pages dialog box.  I use Replace Pages function a lot in preparing PDF documents and need a faster method than using Mouse on Tools right sidebar.  I note that shortcut key for inserting pages is Cntrl-Shift-I   --  what is shortcut for Replace Pages.  In previous Acrobat 9, I could use  alt-DNR, which brought up Replaces Pages dialog box via the menu, but there no longer is a Document item in the menu bar -- it has been removed.  Please, this is VERY important to me.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your quick reply.  You have confirmed my worst fear.  But anyway -- going forward .....  in your opinion, what is the best way to get information to Adobe on ideas for improvement so that future version or maybe even an update for this version could have something like what I need, that is, shortcut key for Replace Pages -- or ability to access customized quick tools via keyboard, etc.  Is there someone keeping a list of these things that I can write to?  Thanks again.  (And don't worry, I won't extend this discussion past your hoped-for reply.)

  • Opening a RAW image from RL4 Beta in PSS5.1 I get this error message!

I can't find any reference to the ACR-7 plug-in on the Adobe Labs site.
When I select the 'Render using Lightroom' option,  the rendered image looks the same as the RAW image in LR4 Beta,
that's good however you lose the Smart-Object capability, no more RAW image.
Will Adobe be releasing ACR 7 for CS5.1 or are we going to be expected to upgrade to Photoshop 6 :-( ?

Thanks for the update Victoria - although it probably confirms our worst fears!
I'm in agreement with the OP about this series of upgrading Photoshop just to keep Camera Raw in sync with Lightroom.
I've started a separate thread with a slightly different angle (ie the reliance and continued need for both Camera Raw and Lightroom
in the same workflow), and would be interested on your feelings on this... Thread is here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/950168?tstart=0

  • HELP! Has Carbon Copy Cloner Killed This G5?

I've got myself into a right old pickle, and wondered if any of the Mac faithful would be able to share any bright ideas on how to proceed.
    Essentially, here's how I spent my Bank Holiday;
Mission - To completely clone the 150GB System and 230GB 'Projects&Sounds' internal drives on a Dual 2GHz G5 - both drives over 99% full. OS=10.3.5
Began by downloading SuperDuper only to find Sys Reqs not met. (10.3.9 required).
Used Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate 230GB Internal to 240GB partition of 400GB Ext FW800 drive - all good.
Used CCC to move 56GB of files from 150GB Ext FW400 drive to 130GB partition of 400GB Ext FW800 drive - all good.
Used CCC to clone internal 150GB System drive to 150GB Ext FW 400 drive. 'Bootable clone' selected.
At end of cloning process, with roughly 1GB left to go, CCC hung up.
Force quit CCC yielded no result.
After 2 hours, whole system was frozen, including menu-bar clock & dock. Hard restart from power button.
Stalled at grey screen - Apple & spinning cursor
Disk utility verified all clones OK - backups intact. Initial side by side check reveals all files seem to be present.
Mission now to get G5 going again.
Hooked up 1st G5 by firewire Target Disk Mode to 2nd G5.
Ran Disk Utility on 1st G5's System drive from 2nd G5. Error reported; "The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)" Also reported "Keys out of place" Failed to verify/repair.
Installed Disk Warrior 3.02 on 2nd G5 & ran on 1st G5's System drive. Reported major differences between original and rebuilt directory in preview, chiefly in HD Library (App Support) & System Folder.
Made note of differences and rebuilt directory of 1st G5's System drive with Disk Warrior.
Rechecked with Disk Utility, 1st G5's System drive appeared fine this time.
Attempted to boot - stalled at grey screen - Apple & spinning cursor
Booted 1st G5 into Single User mode; fans screaming; reported
    "Can't open Library: / System / Library / Frameworks / CoreFoundation.Framework / Versions / A / CoreFoundation (No such file or directory, Errno = 2)"
    Ran fsck, all good.
Exited Single User mode, Finder failed to launch.
Relaunched Target Disk Mode, copied missing file from clone back to original.
Attempted to boot - stalled at grey screen - Apple & spinning cursor
Booted into Single User mode; reported huge screen of gobbledygook (see pic!)
Attempted to reinstall System 10.3.4 (Archive & Install) from Install disk - got first kernel panic
Would not boot from install disks
Ran Apple Hardware test - test would not run
    Error - "Invalid Memory Access at %SRR0: 00000000.00000000 %SRR1: 10000000.00083030"

Reinstalled system 10.3.4 over firewire Target Disk Mode from 2nd G5 using Install disks.
Attempted to boot - Kernel panic.
Ran Apple Hardware test again - test still would not run.
    Error - "Invalid Memory Access at %SRR0: 00000000.00000000 %SRR1: 10000000.00083030"
    Apple PowerMac7,3.5.1.8f2
    BootROM built on 05/21/04 @ 10:56:59"
Unplugged all FW & USB peripherals
Removed all but 2 of RAM chips (8 x 1GB DIMMS installed in machine altogether)
Attempted to boot - Kernel panic.
    Swapped RAM around in pairs
Attempted to boot - Kernel panic.
Ran Apple Hardware test again - test still would not run.
    Error - "Invalid Memory Access at %SRR0: 00000000.00000000 %SRR1: 10000000.00083030"
Ran out of ideas, patience and hair to pull out. Went home to sob on the wife's shoulder and hug the cat.
    Now what?
I have to get this computer working again fast!
cheers, and sorry for the long post

    G5 2GHz

    Just an update on the situation;
First of all, many thanks you guys for all the replies and helpful suggestions - I was a few millimetres from the end of my tether when I first posted.
After I ran DiskWarrior on the System Drive, it appeared to be OK according to both DU and fsck, so I was able to do another backup copy of all the important stuff. I'd already used Target Disk Mode to create some space on it, prior to my Archive and Install of 10.3.4 over firewire. This still had no effect, however.
As luck would have it, yesterday morning a mate of ours who is an audio systems tech was in the building on another job, so he popped by to have a look. When I opened it up, it was like it had been found in the middle of an ancient pyramid, brown sandy dust all over the fans and the heatsink. We performed a PMU reset, swapped the ram around again, unplugged the HDs and attempted to boot from CD - still no joy. Quite a lot of swearing though.....
My techy mate confirmed my worst fears that it is most likely a blown processor or logic board. We're going to swap in another system drive today just to make sure, but it doesn't look good. Fortunately, he was able to loan my colleague another machine to use whilst the G5 goes away to sickbay for diagnosis and a no-doubt costly repair, but we still had to reinstall and reauthorize the mountain of plugins (over 250!), then copy over more than 100Gb of project and audio files from the backups, which took until 10pm last night to accomplish. We'll have to do the same thing again if and when the original machine comes back from repair.
I'm devastated, this is exactly the disaster I was trying to avoid in the first place. I didn't know you could clone from DU (thanks Tom) - if I did, I probably wouldn't be in this mess..... you live and learn, eh?
This morning though, everything seems to be running fine, the temporary G5 is performing well. Three days behind schedule, looking at a possible £1500 repair bill, but at least we can get some real work done now!
    Thanks again to everyone
    Dave

  • Disasterous Home Move experience (so far)

Back in April, I knew I would be moving from my old address (Home 1) at the end of June, so.. in May, I contacted BT's Home Move Team to arrange for my services to be installed at my new address (Home 2) a couple of days after I was due to move in (an engineer was booked for 28/06 pm). In total, I have a phone line, call sign, anonymous call reject, call minder extentions, caller display, ring back and call waiting.
When I placed the order in May, I was told I could move my old numbers to the new address without problem. Anyway, the 28th came and went and no engineer visited although we did have a dialing tone when tested. However, the phone didn't ring when either line or Call Sign numbers were called and the caller would just get a single ring tone and then the line would drop.
I called 150 the following day and was put through to, what seemed like a customer call centre in India. After 30 minutes of waiting on the phone whilst the operator tried to get through to an engineer, I had to give in as I had somewhere else to be. I left my mobile number with the operator and asked for someone to call me back when she finally managed to get through to the engineers. No call ever came.
I called 150 again on the 30th which was again replied by some gentleman in India and was told the hold up was due to an issue with activating the call sign service. I was asked again for my call sign tel. number as they did not appear to have it on their system and I was assured that the issued would be resolved "within 24 hours" now that they had the number.
I called 150 again Thursday pm and elected to be put through to the Home Move team this time round to find out why my order had still not been fulfilled. I was promptly told that the order had obviously not been completed correctly and that the issue would be passed to a manger who would phone me back within 2 hours. I gave my mobile number again and waited. No call ever came.
Friday AM. I contacted the Home Move Team yet again on 150 and was told that the order could not be fulfilled as they had received "conflicting information" from me. I asked what this was and I was told that I had given my Call Sign number but I was unable to take that with me because a new number would have to be generated if I opted to transfer the call sign service despite the fact that a) I had previously moved my call sign number before on a previous move and b) BT customer service reps had constantly asked for my call sign number up to this point. I was told that my original order would have to be cancelled and a new order generated. How long was I expected to wait? Well, as it was BT's mess up in the first place by not placing the order correctly, they would be able to get the line on by Tuesday 6th! Oh, but they would have to allocate me a ghost number temporarily because my original number had now been assigned to the previous order but no fear, they would be able to get it reallocated by the 7th. Feeling the issue had been resolved, albeit delayed, I felt somewhat happier UNTIL....
A nagging feeling in the back of my mind was saying to me to log in to the BT Order Tracking system online with the new order number I'd been given. I inputted the VOL number and new postcode. NOTHING. Order could not be found. I inputted the VOL number and my old postcode. VOILA. There was the order. A quick check to 150 yesterday morning confirmed my worst fears. The order had been allocated to my old address!!!!! The apologetic BT customer services rep. told me, once again, my order had to be cancelled and another one raised for new address. Oh, and, the system is telling me "we won't be able to complete this order until 19th July" WHAT!!!!????? I announced. "Don't worry" I was told, "due to the error/circumstances we'll be able to bring the order forward but I can't offer you an earlier date at the moment because the order has to be accepted by Open Reach". I was then asked to call back later on in the afternoon so that Open Reach had opportunity to accept order and an earlier date could be arranged.
Guess what! I did that and Steve the Customer Service guy promptly told me there was nothing they could do to bring the order forward because it was not an Open Reach error but a BT one and Open Reach can't prioritise BT customers over other customers. I was offered 1 month's free line rental for my inconvenience and "was there anything else I could help you with?" I exclaimed "so, you're telling me that, despite no fault of my own, you are leaving me without a phone line and other subsequent services for 3 weeks and there is nothing you can do to alleviate the situation". I was then, quite curtly told, that I had received one month's line rental free for the inconvenience and that, in the past, BT might have had some sway with Open Reach, but not any longer. And that ended the call.
If this is what BT determines as, I quote "moving with less stress", I think they need to re-evaluate their competences, customer service and what the customer considers satisfactory!!!!!!

    Reads as follows;
    Dear iTunes Customer,
Thank you for downloading the movie The Three Flavours Cornetto® Trilogy. Unfortunately, the movie you received may have had some noticeable quality issues.  We have corrected the problem and a new copy is available to download, free of charge.  To receive the new version, please re-download the title from your iTunes purchase history.

I don't tend to click on unsolicited links and sure as heck don't remember ordering this movie. I have figured it to be a phishing scam.
    Anyone else?

    Dear ed2345 and Nadine_brizuela,
As a Network Administrator I understand how these emails at first glance appear to be legitimate. Everything about them seems legitimate. That is why before commenting further, I waited for a response from Apple concerning this matter before confirming my worst fear. And as MiniBeast has stated: "I have figured it to be a phishing scam.", "it raised red flags immediately", "it's definitely a Phishing Scam to steal info." turns out to be correct and the word needs to get out to Apple customers as soon as possible, before any damage may be done.
As confirmed by Apple it is indeed an Phising scam. The links appear to be legitimate. They seems to point to Apple and above all, the very worst part is that they appear to be emailed from a legitimate Apple email server, when in fact it was not sent from Apple, as confirmed by the following response from Itunes support.
It is indeed a confirmed scam sent by hackers who could have only pulled this off by a DNS poisoning attack, but for me still seems fishy because of whois confirmation, but Apple confirms it did not come from them.
What is DNS poisoning: http://www.computer-network-security-training.com/what-is-a-dns-poisoning-attack /
For me, when I got this email, it seemed fishy to me as well, I opened it and it went to Apple, I closed out that browser and opened a different browser and went to Apple and reset my password and contacted support and then responded to this post above. With DNS poisoning it seems that the links are real because your browser says apple.com/... when in fact the links are completely fake sending you to a completely different server. And it even appears to be emailed from Apple, which, as confirmed by Apple, it was not.
The word needs to get out especially to all Apple customers, that this particular email is fake and a Phishing attack designed to get the users Apple ID login. I would not have believed it myself unless confirmed by Apple.
    RESPONSE FROM APPLE SUPPORT BELOW:
    Thanks for choosing Apple.
Greetings from iTunes Store Customer Support. My name is Mohammed and I am happy to assist you today.
I understand that you receive two emails from Apple about the movie. I know you must be eager to get this resolved. I will provide the necessary information.
I looked into this and found that neither the email nor its sender are affiliated with Apple. The email appears to be a phishing attempt, designed to trick users into visiting a website.
If you still have the email, please forward it to [email protected] so we can investigate it. If the email contains links or attachments, please don't open them.
Apple will only send you an email asking you to verify an email address in these situations:
    - When you first set up an account
    - Immediately after you add or change a contact email address for an Apple ID
Also, an email from Apple will never ask you for your password, Social Security Number, or full credit card number.
If you haven't already done so, I recommend following the suggestions in this article:

  • New iPhone OS renders 3GS inoperable and unusable

Beware of upgrading your 3GS to a newer version of OS. I purchased a newer 3GS phone in April 2010 and now it has been rendered simply worthless and unusable. I spoke with Apple support who simply moved me to the very latest OS several weeks ago. The problem of unbelievable slowness and delay in keyboard response and recognition has rendered my 9 month old iPhone unusable. The representatives at the local AT&T store confirmed my worst fears and cringed at my demo of slowness during simple calling and waiting between most menu changes of 3 to 5 seconds and more. My coverage with AT&T in my marketplace is marginal and this phone issues has simply broken my loyalty with AT&T. I placed my order for a new plan and number change to Verizon with a Droid Phone. I really think this problem has been brushed under the rug by Apple and it will cost them many converts to phones that look and operate as simply as their iPhone products. Buyer Beware.

Not on my iPhone. My 3gs is better in every way on 4.2.1 than on any previous version.

Hi, I am having some trouble with my Probook 6550b and am pretty stumped and just want to inquire to the online community before I confirm my worst fear that I have a problem on the motherboard. I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. I bought this laptop about a month ago second hand and it needed a new battery right off the bat and I knew this going in to the purchase. The laptop would still power on with the AC adapter though and the system seemed to run great other than the battery issue. I purchased a OEM replacement battery and installed the battery on arrival and I booted the computer up and everything looked to be working just like it should, the battery was charging and the icon was there in my tray as proof. I thought I had found the remedy to my situation but I was wrong. The battery had charged to about 50% when I shut the system down and I did not touch it for about 5 days until I came back from a family vacation and when I powered it back up the battery had 50% life left but it was no longer showing as charging in the system tray, yet the AC adapter was plugged in. The icon that I was seeing was a battery level without the plug next to it. I started to reasearch this issue and found many topics online about uninstalling battery drivers in device manager and followed that process quite a few times with no success. The battery was still not charging. I ran the HP battery check utility and everything came back perfect which led me to believe the battery was perfectly fine. A message appeared at the bottom of that window that told me there was no power supply hooked up (even though the adapted is still plugged in). I ended up running the battery all the way down to 5% during the research and experimentation process and now the laptop will not power on when both the battery and the AC adapted are connected. The battery itself will not power the computer back on (I am assuming since there is <5% life left), but it will power on with the AC adapter connected (but the battery cannot be installed). The system tray icon I am receiving is a low battery with a flashing 'X'. I have searched and searched online and have not really been able to come across any other possibilities other than a bad power supply or a bad charging mechanism on the motherboard. Some questions I have: Would a fresh installation of Windows possibly remedy this? (I figure not since the laptop will not start up with both battery and AC plugged in; screams hardware issue to me)Any BIOS settings that I may be overlooking?Could a BIOS update help?Any other Windows settings that I may check? If indeed this is a motherboard issue, where could I find a replacement? Thanks so much ahead of time for any and all responses, hopefully somebody will be able to help me!

EDIT: I install the battery after I startup the laptop with just the AC adapter and that's when I lose the power from the supply and the battery icon shows loe battery with a flashing red X. So basically when the battery is plugged in the computer disregards the power supply totally.

  • ITunes Store US and iTunes Store Germany

My brother lives in Germany and tells me he can download certain songs from iTunes Germany that are not available on iTunes US. Is there a way to download both iTunes software of access both iTunes stores? Would it work on the same computer? Thanks for your help.

I'm sorry to be argumentative here, but do you mean
to say that the rights holders in Germany, the UK,
Japan or anywhere else in the world don't want to use
iTunes as a global platform to NOT ONLY make their
goods available to anyone with a home computer, but
also to make international dollars? To me, that
makes no sense. iTunes HAS the technology to make
    all this music/books/media available...and "artists"
need to make a living...I don't really see them
    having ANY issue with taking
    dollars/euros/rupees/pesos/whatever...they are
looking to increase their own bottom line.
I think that iTunes should allow you to buy whatever,
from whereever...no matter what your "credit card
    billing address" is.

I agree 100 percent and unfortunately, I am confirming our worst fears. Unfortunately, its not always as easy as you think. Each artist has representation that is different in each country, perhaps if artists had the motivation to sell abroad, it would work better, but the recording companies don't agree with this. I am sure that Apple would love to sell you whatever music you would like to buy, but their hands are tied. They cannot sell what they are allowed to.
