Conform caption timecode to sequence timecode?

Working in a foreign language edit, had to cut and reassemble a caption track along with its corresponding video that needed moving around.  Caption clips move in the timeline and play fine on the program monitor, but the original timecode in the caption bin remains unchanged.  Upon export, captions pop up in their original, pre-edit, bin timecode, so that captions no longer match clips as they did in the program monitor.
Is there an automatic way to conform caption timecode to where reassembled captions appear on the sequence, so that exports work/look the same as the program monitor?  I can't find any documentation on how one would do that. Not that a lot of people need this function, but I do.
Conforming times manually is feasible but slow/ laborious: scrub the timeline,   type in the new start + end timecodes on the caption in the bin, one by one. Of course if the new time overlaps with an existing caption, Premiere won't let you make the change. Untangling this can be a real mess because you need to find un-captioned spaces.
So, to avoid the overlap/untangle mess, one can first change all bin timecodes for after the end of the program (e.g, +1 hour); once lined up in the great beyond I can substract the extra time (again, manually, both start + end timecode) so that they again line up with my video sequence… hopefully in the correct places. But as you can see, laboriousness aside, this invites error (e.g., inadvertently breaking the translation).
Any suggestions for shortcuts or automation for this process within Premiere?

It's true you can't do it in Print to Video.
Edit to Tape can look complex at a glance, but it's really pretty simple. You can get detailed instructions on how to use it in the manual (or search your "Help" menu for Edit To Tape), but basically, this is what you do:
1. Set your timeline so your footage starts at 00:01:00:00, as you mentioned was your requirement. That means you're sequence actually starts at 00:00:20:00 due to the 40 seconds of bars/tone/countdown.
2. Open the Edit to Tape window and click the "Black and Code" button at the top of the window.
3. Set it to "Current Settings" and to start at 00:00:10:00 (you need to give the tape enough code for preroll to start at 00:00:20:00).
4. Black and Code the tape.
5. Set the In Point (bottom left of the Edit to Tape window) to start at 00:00:20:00.
6. Drag your sequence right from the browser to the "Assemble" button in the Edit to Tape window (you can also use "Insert," depending on your requirements).
7. Done and done.
*It's a good idea to close all your sequences and turn off "Show overlays" in the canvas before you edit to tape. helps things run smoothly.
Also...For the above explanation I am assuming you have placed the 40 seconds of bars/tone/countdown in your sequence. If you haven't, you can add them in using functions of Edit to Tape as well...again, see the manual. It's really quick.
I may have failed to include some steps that are second nature to me so that's another good reason to check the manual or the Help file.
Hope this helps,
Joni
(one more thing, make sure your Beta deck is set to "External" when you're outputting so it takes the timecode from FCP)

  • Conforming project to dpx sequences

    Hi there,
I have an advert I've cut in premier cc and had graded professionally - Ive had dpx image sequences given back to me . Is there a straightforward way to get premier to relink to these sequences?

OK, I chatted with Adobe and after they got back to me via email, here's what they wrote:
    "Hi Sami,
    This is Adobe Technical Support.
We are responding in reference to your case# 0185837302 regarding the Adobe Premiere Pro, I researched the issue and found out that the issue is reproducible on our end.
I have reported the issue to the higher level of support team. They will research on this issue and will try roll out a patch update to fix it."

  • How do you edit to tape with captions?

    Howdy,
Captions are in sequence, show up in the program panel and are in 708. VANC is enabled. Where do I go from here? Is it supposed to ask me if I want to export with captions (like it does when you export media)?
    Thanks,
    Dana

Captions are very confusing to me at this moment. I've been captioning for the last 18 years so I'm very familiar with 608 captioning. 708 captions on the other hand are acting bizarre. Yesterday we captioned a show and we saw captions from head to tail. Great. When I checked captions the weirdness begins. Naturally when you finish laying a show to tape your at the end of the show. So I rewound the tape 2 minutes to check sync and no captions. On our scopes I can see the pip on line 9 (vanc area) and I can tell the data is active but no display of captions. If I rewind to the start of the show captions are there. I can play all the way thru the show and captions are there. But if I'm playing the show and watching captions and change the input to our QC CC monitor and then changed it back no captions will be displayed. The only way I can rationalize this is there must be header info that plays at the beginning of the CC file that interprets the 708 data but if you start ( or tune in) in the middle of the show there is interpretation going on and then no CC is displayed.
If I put 608 on V2 and 708 on V3 will only one track be embedded, the one the display setting is set to?  Most network shows have both 608 and 708 and I'd like to be able to do that also.

  • Animation sequence pauses

    Hi
I have a slide where 4 text captions appear in sequence then a line and oval shape following in sequence.
If I play the slide from the timeline the sequence is OK.
When I preview the slide- the four captions appear in sequence OK but then the piece pauses and I have to click the play button in the in the playback bar to start the rest of the sequence.
I can't figure out why it pauses or find a control to amend it.
    Help appreciated
    Thanks

If you'd like, I'll take a look.  Send the Captivate file with just the offending slide in it.

  • FCE Sequence specs change

Somewhere along the line, my sequence changed it's specs from 1920x1080, pixel aspect: square to 720x480, pixel aspect NTSC 601. My project is now 4x3 instead of 16x9. Late in the project I added some 720x480 clips, but they conformed nicely to the sequence and I even exported a version the looked correct. Now the sequence has changed and I can't seem to find a way to change it back...ouch.

Go to Sequence>Settings. Click the load presets button and select the correct preset. Then select the clips in the timeline and use the remove attributes function to reset them.

  • MAJOR CC PROBLEMS!

Ok...I'm at a complete loss. I don't know what the heck is happening. I re-exported my entire main show from FCP and gave it the proper timecode from the first voice spoken...00.00.14.16. I then brought that mpeg2 file into DVSP and attached the SCC file which Kelly reset for me to start at 00.00.00.00. I then set the "track offset" to 00.00.14.16. When I build the DVD, it still is giving me that error of " Some closed caption data does not fall within the video timecode and is being skipped." I have no idea why it's saying that. Please help!

Perfect Day, I hope you don't mind, but I thought I would let everyone know how this thread was resolved.
The problem with the .scc files the were working with, was as follows. The first track that contained captioning, had a chapter marker within a few frames of were the first caption was to begin, so the lead-in data for the captioning was getting cut off. This was resolved by, Perfect Day moving the chapter marker a few seconds prior to where the first captioning started and I had to adjust the placement of the leading data, so that it was in the video that was displayed after the chapter marker.
This lead-in data is not the caption itself, (that is displayed) but rather supporting data, that proceeds the displayed data and is not displayed, which without, the first caption would would be missing, part or all of the displayed caption text, for the first caption only. So placement of this lead-in data, in the video proceeding the first caption is critical to displaying the first caption of any .scc file.
This was a very unique problem, being that there was only a few frames and not even seconds before the first caption needed to be displayed, normally there are several seconds before most first captions are displayed and this lead-in data is contained in those few seconds before first caption.
The other issues with the .scc files that Perfect Day was working with, were:
    1. Lead- data placement on some of the other .scc files had to be adjusted.
    2. Timing of the captions was off by several seconds on some, which was also fixed. Performed a ripple timecode adjustment, (changing of all captions timecode placement.
Well that it, hope this helps anyone else that runs into this issue!

  • Wrong capture frame rate

    Hi,
I'm trying to conform a movie from recapture, and I'm with troubles.
I'm capturing from HDCAM 1080i 59.94 and after capture my material should be 29.97fps. But always is different.
Sometimes is 29.95 or 28.54 well... severals differents values.
I see the speed of image is OK, I haven't drops.
But when go to conform the timecodes doesn't match.
FCP shows correct frame rate on Bin, but QT shows these variables frame rates.
Anothers programs as Autodesk Smoke and Assimilate Scratch recognize the wrong frame rate too.
I have a Mac Pro 12 core, using the latest Snow Leopard, FCP Studio 3 and QT.
For storage have a External SAS disk array with 32 TB wich has a sustainted througput of 700MB/s (fully tested and OK).
For capture I'm using a Aja Kona 3.
Actually I already saw this problem in anothers versions of FCP and anothers machines.. but I never get to fix it.
Please, someone already had this problem and fix it?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thiago Cabral

QT almost is always wrong.  It plays what it can... and with Snow Leopard, QT X is just worse.  The fact that Smoke and Scratch report the wrong frame rate is really puzzling.  Try this...use the CONFORM option in Cinema Tools to conform the footage to 29.97.  Might be just the thing needed to LOCK that frame rate still.

  • FCE output quality is less than average :-(

I really hope someone can help, I'm under a crunch to complete some software tutorials and all my trials result is average to POOR quality.
*Here's the scoop* (I am testing this with only a 24sec. video):
*Using ScreenFlow >>* I am capturing my screen to create the tutorials. I am outputting them as: Web-High (best quality) H.264 multi-pass video encoding at 850 kbits/sec., AAC stereo at 96 kbits/sec., scale 100% or 1440x900 +(realizing the higher quality out the better so I can convert/compress down to flv 720X format/size and still end up with some quality)+. I've also kept the size the same throughout the process below, to no avail +(again rather go "down" to 720X so I don't lose quality, this is the desired final size for our software demo videos)+.
In Quicktime it looks absolutely awesome, clear, and the sound is perfect. I could stop here and convert these to flash for our site but I need to add intro/outros to "dress them up" and describe each tutorial. NOW...
*In Final Cut Express >>* I import the xxx.mov file in along with audio, etc. When finished with intro/outro/transitions I: 1) set mark in/mark out, then, sequence > render all(all checked). 2) File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion > and used Default, Broadband-High and Broadband-Medium,
and I've tried every setting in "QuickTime Movie" format as well as "Flash Video FLV" and NOTHING looks worth a darn.
If anyone has any suggestions, or is local in Scottsdale, AZ and wants to work for an hour Fri or Sat (yes paid, LOL), i could really use the help.
Thanks so much up front for any help-direction! Cheers.

can't I just change the "Easy Setup" settings so it would work without degrading the input and subsequently the output? Sorry, I don't quite grasp "fixed-resolution" yet so may be asking something that doesn't have an answer.
FCE only works with certain presets available in the Easy Setup menu. If your footage isn't one of these resolutions then FCE will conform it to the sequence you have selected, downgrading the footage in the process. Final Cut Pro gives you the option to make a sequence set to the dimensions you want it to be, without worrying about whether your image matches a preset.

  • AME Bug: Creates new CFA file for each clip queued!

Here is my workflow:  I have a 60 minute sequence of a dance performance of about 20 dances.  I queued in AME 20 exports to H.264 files by moving the workspace to the segment I want to export, adding it to the queue with a file name, and repeating for the next section (dance).
For each queued export I make a copy so I have a low and high resolution export (40 in total).  Finally, the last queued export is a MPEG DVD file for Encore.
The issue is that when I start the queue, the first thing AME does is conform the ENTIRE SEQUENCE'S AUDIO (not just the clip).  Then it starts the export.  On my computer (Core i7-2600, 24GB RAM), it takes over 15 minutes to conform a 60 minute sequence (the CFA ends being close to 2GB).  While it's conforming the CPU load never goes above 10%.  The export starts for the first clip and that takes less than 90 seconds with all 8 cores pegged at 100% and the GPU over 50%.
Then AME startes the conforming AGAIN FOR THE ENTIRE SEQUENCE instead of re-using the CFA file it just conformed!
Why doesn't it re-use the CFA file?  Or, why does it conform the entire sequence if all I'm exporting is a portion?
    And why isn't conforming a multi-threaded process?
At this rate, it will take all night and consume close to 50 GB of disk space in CFA files.
Here is what my queue looks like:

Actually, I think it's working as designed when it conforms upon export.  See the online help HERE.
    It says, in part:
Premiere Pro does conform audio in uncompressed clips when you use them in sequences with non-matching sample rates. However no conforming is done until you export the sequences or create audio preview files.
The audio in my Canon MXF file is uncompressed 16-bit Linear PCM, so when I bring in the MXF files all PPr does is create PEK files.  This is really nice since I don't have to wait for conforming to begin editing.  Creating PEK files is really fast compared to conforming.  There is a caviat, though...
The max file size from my camera is about 2GB.  Anything longer will span multiple files.  If I copy the contents of the CF card from the camera to my computer, the browse to the files using PPr, it will find all the spanned clips and interpret them as one longer video file.  Not problem, and that's how it's supposed to work.  BUT, since PPr is treating all these spanned files as one longer video clip, it WILL conform the audio.
So to speed things up, I just bring in all the spanned files separately, then sort them and insert them into a sequence in order.  It works fine, and no conforming.
My problem with AME is when it DOES finally conform, it's not re-using the CFA file.  In my particular case, I'm taking one long sequence and exporting different portions of it as separate exports.  I would think that AME would conform the whole sequence once, then re-use it.  But no, it sees each as a separate export, so each export gets its own identical (but different named) CFA file.
So now my current workflow is:
Import in all the video as separate MXF files.
Import audio from digital recorder (house audio).
Mark the clapper sync points on the video and audio files.
Add video clips to a sequence in ascending order
Add to the sequence the audio track and align the sync markers
Balance the audio tracks with the mixer
    Create a new sequence
Add to the new sequence the first sequence
Render and replace audio so I can get a waveform (it helps find edit points) and conformed audio
    Add titles as needed
Edit the timeline, transitions, add Encore chapters, etc.
    Export clips to AME queue
    Save early and save often!

  • Video quality is less than expected when playing inside Flash

iam using flv video. i played it back in many ways , with flv player that comes with flash ,as embedded in the time line and using external class that use  NetStream ,the video quality was less than playing the same video  outside the flash invironment using any  stand  alone video player like media player classic .
why is that happening , did i miss some thing ?
is there a setting  that i should do to play hd video in high quality ?

  • CC don't appear in timeline

I created a caption in the timeline but it doesn't show up in the program monitor.
    [Thread title updated for clarity.]
Message was edited by: Jim Simon

Did you place the captions on the sequence and did you enable them to be viewed?
Or did you mean subtitles and not closed captions?
You have to create the subtitles and then place them on the timeline. If they do not show up, make sure that the track is enabled.

  • Video pixilating after render on timeline...help me please.

    Hello,
I have been trying to find out how to stop my videos from pixilating after I render them, the video looks fine when I view them, but once I transfer to the timeline and render it, it becomes pixilated...mostly around the edges of the people in the video, you see it a lot with movement. How can I stop this from happening...frustrating.
    Thank you,

That would be your problem. You are putting an HD clip of frame size 1280x720 into a DV sequence with frame size 720x480. When FCE renders the video, it conforms it to the sequence settings and makes your video fit in the 720x480 frame, thus sacrificing quality.
What you should do first is to change your Easy Setup to 1280x720 (File > Easy Setup). Then, create a new sequence. This sequence will automatically match your Easy Setup and have a frame size of 1280x720.
You then have two choices. As H.264 is not a supported codec for FCE, you will have to render it in the sequence to make it editable. You can either simply place your clips into the sequence and render them out, or you can use the free [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com> to first convert your clips to the supported Apple Intermediate Codec. If you convert your clips first, they can be edited natively in your sequence without the need for rendering.
Whichever way you decide to do things, editing your clips in a 1280x720 sequence should solve the major quality issue.

  • Change of software - a few questions

    Hello everyone,
So here I am - yet another editor disgusted by the release of Final Cut Pro X - exploring Adobe Premiere Pro.
Now I am really impressed with the looks and feel of Premiere. I use to cut away on Premiere 2.0. From there I picked up Final Cut Pro and never really got back until doomsday - last week. Great to see the work Adobe has put in to the software, they seem to really believe in it. My compliments.
However, I have a few questions that I hope you guys can help me answer. If an question was already posted I apologize, but I find the forum to be very chaotic.
    What's to know;
I work on a  Mac Pro from early 2009 - 8 core, hyperthreaded machine with 12 GB of DDR3 RAM. I have four monitors of which two are referential and work with the BlackMagic Decklink HD Extreme.
I am also very sexy which might bring confusion to the program I suppose.
    Question one:
Coming from Final Cut Pro I am used to the Apple Pro Res workflow and I like it - A LOT. The render quality compared to it's file sizes is amazing. Is there anyway to work with Pro Res in Premiere Pro?
    Question two:
I know Premiere Pro to be 64 bits but when I render my cores won't go over 35% usage. How do I get it to render for the full 100%?
    Question three:
I work with XDCam EX material. However, if I want my sequense to have playback over the BlackMagic devices I need to work in a BlackMagic codec sequense. I have all the latest drivers and I can work in a Pro Res or XDCam EX codec sequense in Final Cut and it will playback just fine. Now of course, you can say - well the blackmagic timeline seems to be a fine workaround - but then of course I have to render everything I put in there. Quite unnessesary. Is there anyway to set my timeline to an XDCam codec (or Pro Res if question one gets answered positifly )?
    Question four:
I notice that whenever I return to Premiere Pro from another program (say via CMD + Tab) it freezes up for some time. Everytime. Frustrating. Is this a common problem? Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
    Question five:
After I import media (thank God for XML support!) Premiere Pro starts generating Peak Files. I read somewhere that it's supposed to be a background proces so that eachtime I do something in the timeline it stops and gives full core and ram power to where I need it. However, I find that it just keeps going and makes Premiere Pro really unresponsive and slow. Anyway to fix this?
    Question six:
Why does Final Cut X suck so badly?
    I think that's it for now .
Hope you can answere these questions all positivly... oh - Questions seven: why is there no dictionary functionality in this text editor??
    Kind regards,
    Wesley Blokker.
PS: If you like check out my work here: http://vimeo.com/eclipseav/videos

    Question one:
Coming from Final Cut Pro  I am used to the Apple Pro Res workflow and I like it - A LOT. The  render quality compared to it's file sizes is amazing. Is there anyway  to work with Pro Res in Premiere Pro?
You bet: import it, and edit. Check out this thread: Apple ProRes workflow in premiere pro?
    Okidoki, thanks mate.
    Question two:
I know Premiere Pro to be  64 bits but when I render my cores won't go over 35% usage. How do I  get it to render for the full 100%?
    What do you mean
by "render?" Are you referring to rendering previews? Exporting? A lot
of it can be influenced by the source footage, the destination format,
the effects you're using, etc. The bottom line is that you won't always
get full-tilt boogie rendering, regardless of the app being 64-bit. In
fact, if you're working with ProRes, you're actually limited to
32-bitness, since Premiere must use QuickTime for decoding of that
format, and QT is only 32-bit. That's more than likely the bottleneck
    you're encountering.
Well I mean rendering your timeline for smooth previews. My footage is XDCam EX 35mb/s material at 1080p25 and comes of a RAID (e-sata) via a server and ethernet cables. However at the moment I am not working with Pro Res since I didn't know you could. I keep the original source footage and place it in a BlackMagic timeline because otherwise I cannot playback via my BM card.
    Don't
worry so much about rendering in Premiere Pro; there's no need to the
vast majority of the time. Even if you're seeing a red bar, that's only
saying that you might need to render to get real-time playback.
Most of my sequences have red bars due to the footage and effects I
use, and I still get rippin' real-time playback. Naturally, on export,
your footage will be rendered, but that's an unavoidable
necessity. Ultimately, sequences work a bit differently in PPro than in
FCP: you can plunk anything you like into a PPro sequence, and it won't
try to render it in the background to conform it to the sequence. Just
    edit and be happy
That doesn't make any sence mate - I have XDCam material right. If I put it in a native sequense, which would be ideal, it won't playback via my BlackMagic monitors. Why is that? The rendering is just another negative aspect of it, but you're right, that don't really matter.
    Question four:
I notice that whenever I return to Premiere Pro from another program (say via CMD + Tab) it freezes up for some time. Everytime. Frustrating. Is this a common problem? Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
    There
have been a few reports of this; I can't remember the resolution. You
didn't mention: are you using CS5 or CS5.5? If you're using CS5, make
sure that you're fully updated to version 5.0.4; go to Help > Updates
to check. If you're on CS5.5, the current version is 5.5.0, so there is
likely something else that is the cause. I'm a PC user, so I've not
followed those reports to closely. Here's one thread which says this is
fixed in CS5.5: Adobe Forums: Premiere CS5 post alt-tab freeze
    Unforutatley I'm running 5.0.4.
    The
generation of PEK files and CFA (conformed audio) files is a point of
frustration for most Premiere Pro users. The best bet is to simply let
it finish: usually, it won't take that long. After you import your
media, go grab some coffee or do some jumping jacks or something else
interesting, and let the process finish. Now, if Premiere Pro continues
to generate files, there is something wonky with the media database,
and it usually means purging the PEK/CFA/etc. files and then cleaning
the media cache database. Premiere Pro will have to regenerate the files
(yeah, again), but this time, they'll usually stick. I think it can be a
little touchy if you continue to try to work during this process, and
Premiere Pro can lose track of those files. That's why most of us have
griped again and again for this process to change or go away forever and
    ever.
    Roger that. Thanks.
    Question six:
Why does Final Cut X suck so badly?
    That's a tough one
    I demand to know!
Questions seven: why is there no dictionary functionality in this text editor??
There is; click the little ABC-checkmark button at the top right corner of the text field.
    Aight, thanks
Thanks for your help mate. I hope you can help me solve the BlackMagic problem here and give some more information about the rendering as it's far from optimal.

  • Capture Card for rendering speed vs. no card

Only having HDV firewire output from my camera,
can't really use a card for capture, but,
would a card (eg. Blackmagic HD Extreme) speed up the quicktime export from FCP6.?
currently 50 mins sequence takes 6 hours to output.
Speed up conforming to a diff sequence (eg. Prores)?
    speed up everything or anything?????

Not if you are limited to sending back out HDV. The reconforming process is slow (as you have experienced).
in the for what it's worth category, this is why it's takes time.
Sony's version of HDV is formated into a 15 frame GOP (group of pictures). Simply put, this means there is one full frame (I frame) then 14 frames that reference the differences to the full frame. These reference frames do not contain full information and only make sense when compared to the last I frame and any intervening frames.
When you make a cut in this GOP, the chances are you are NOT editing on an I frame, you are cutting somewhere between them. This means FCP must generate an internal I frame at that point. As you can imagine this is an editing nightmare. That FCP gets it to work is truely a bit of wizardry.
When you are all done, FCP must re-conform the the footage, that is, generate a continuous 15 frame GOP structure from the beginning of the footage. Some I frames become reference frames and new I frames must be generated in the correct pattern. This is very computationally intensive and is totally dependent on processor speed.
So, If you want to speed up output to HDV, get a faster machine.
    good luck,
    x
