Confused about kernel extensions
I've learned two things about kernel extensions from Google searches:
1. Kernel extensions are stored in System/Library/Extensions
2. You can list all Apple extensions with the Terminal command kextstat and all third party extensions with the command kextstat | grep -v com.apple.
But something doesn't add up: the files listed by the kextstat command all begin with "com.apple". No files in System/Library/Extensions begin with "com.apple". In fact, none of the kernel extensions listed by the kextstat command seem to reside in System/Library/Extensions. So where are they?
I have the following result with the terminal command kextstat
Index Refs Address Size Wired Name (Version) <Linked Against>
111 0 0xffffff7f80b71000 0x5000 0x5000 com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower (1.6.6) <101 5 4 3>
126 0 0xffffff7f820f4000 0x3000 0x3000 com.bresink.driver.BRESINKx86Monitoring (9.0) <5 4 3>
I found the Soundflower driver in /System/Library/Extensions/
But ccould not find the other one BRESINKx86Monitoring anywhere .
where is it hidden?

Confusion about .html extension
Hi Guys,
I have a problem with my site at www.dubkasm.com, I find that if I type in just dubkasm.com it takes me straight to my home.html page, but when I type dubkasm.com/remixed it won't take me to that sub page, unless I type the address with.html at the end.
The problem is, I have quoted the link dubkasm.com/remixed on my album artwork (already in shops) but when this is typed in, the page is not found! Is there a way I can remedy this
I hope this is clear. Thanks for your help!

Confused about Reader Extensions
I've created an interactive form and the users using Reader can email the XML data from it to me, and I can import that data into the forms using Acrobat Pro 7.0 just fine. The users have requested that they be able to save a copy of the *completed* form. We're also considering the upgrade to Acrobat 8 Pro and would "enabling Usage Rights" in the form through Acrobat 8 Pro enable the Reader users to save their completed forms or not?
Potentially. Key question: What is the absolute maximum number of
users a form might have? And the maximum number of uses one form might
ever have? 100? 500? 1000...?

Confused about capability of extensions
Hi,
I'm a bit confused about what extensions are used for. I've
never used any, and can't seem to figure out what they're for
besides copy-paste.
I looked at dreamweavers help file about creating extensions,
but all it does is allow you to make a code block that can be
inserted at a click of a button.
Is there a way that you can make extensions that actually ADD
options to dreamweaver menus? Like when a user right clicks
somewhere, or something like that? Like if the user clicks anywhere
a link to go to google.com is on the menu or something, thats
simple.
What I want is to build a window that is an extension. You
can find what I am attempting to accomplish at:

What can you do with extensions? Can you actually add onto

Dreamweaver creates a local copy of menus.xml that overrides
the copy in
Configuration. See this link for info:

Files window ect?
Yes, look up Floating Panels in the Extending Dreamweaver
manual.

Check the DW API reference in the help menu. Almost every API
call is in
there. Additional functionality is in Configuration/Shared.
Check the
dwscripts.js file and others for a good idea of what can be
done.

I've always found hard to find good information about this card - some sources, even, contradict themselves. All what I know is that it is an integrated graphics card and that it features the RS780M chipset. These are some tips I've got from the system logs:

I also found good (?) information, or at least a clearly-explained article, here. After reading it, UVD appears as the AMD's counterpart of NVIDIA's VDPAU for video acceleration.
What I'm not sure about, is:
- Does it support video acceleration? I'd like to offload video processing to the GPU, but am not sure if my card and the open-source drivers support it or not. Wikipedia's article about VDPAU states it comes from NVIDIA, but then it says it has an open-source implementation.
- What has gallium to do with it? What gallium drivers should I enable in mesa? And what about DRI drivers?
I configured mesa as follows:
./configure --prefix=/usr \
--sysconfdir=/etc \
--with-dri-driverdir=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri \
--with-gallium-drivers=r600 \
--with-dri-drivers=radeon \
--with-llvm-shared-libs \
--enable-gallium-llvm \
--enable-egl \
--enable-gallium-egl \
--with-egl-platforms=x11,drm \
--enable-shared-glapi \
--enable-gbm \
--enable-glx-tls \
--enable-dri \
--enable-glx \
--enable-osmesa \
--enable-texture-float \
--enable-xa \
--enable-vdpau
Not sure if I missed something, though.
I am very confused about how Linux manages graphics, and what all those layers are for. DRM, DRI, VDPAU, VA-API, gl, gl3, xv, xvmc... it's a mess!
Thanks in advance.
Last edited by Kalrish (2013-06-16 17:54:04)The feature matrix might help. The easy part to answer is that the 3D driver is split into two parts: DRM which is part of the kernel and DRI which is in userspace and comes from the mesa package.
Xv is an Xserver extension supported by pretty much all drivers. Found in the DDX (xf86-video-*), it uses features of the card to speed up the display of video (but not decoding). It can either do this by using the "video overlay" or creating a shader.
Now if you want to use Xv but also offload decoding to the card, you need a video acceleration API. The ones to choose from are XvMC, VA-API, VDAPU in increasing order of feature support. They were developed by Xorg, Intel, Nvidia respectively but anyone is free to implement them. I don't think it's correct to call UVD a counterpart of VDPAU. UVD is a bunch of registers on newer AMD cards. And if you sent bits to those registers in the right way, you can implement VDPAU.
The other way to implement VDPAU (say if the documentation for UVD registers was not released) is to use gallium. There is a gallium state tracker which can still do it at the expense of being slower. It is a hack whereby you convert video frames to polygon textures and make the OpenGL part of the card think that it's calculating part of a 3D scene when really it's decoding video. -
Hello everyone, after spending a few days reading various posts about similar topics, here is a breakdown of my question:
(I made a Time Machine backup on an external HD, even though EtreCheck says "Not Configured")
1: I used EtreCheck to diagnose my laptop, and I do not know how to locate the Kernel Extensions in the computer to eliminate them, or "solve" them. Can I find them with Finder? If so, do I just delete the files? How else can I pinpoint the issues EtreCheck shows me?
2: I am experiencing the "15 second waiting period" with the gray spining wheel when I restart, which only started happening about three weeks ago.
3: After multiple attempts, it seems that Mavericks 10.9 is finally downloading from the App Store, but I would rather not upgrade if I don't need to, since 10.7.5 has been working well until now.
MAINLY, this is important to me since I am using Abelton Live 9 with a new 64-bit Saffire Pro-14 firewire audio interface, and it has started clicking during playback, which cannot be solved with buffering/latency fixes. This is the main reason I got this laptop (for audio production) and I want to make sure it continues to function at the highest level for that purpose.
To be clear, I have not experienced a "kernel panic" that requires me to shut down... I am simply trying to maintain my system for optimal performance by deleting problem files.
Thanks to anyone who can give me some basic daemon/kernel hunting instructions.

0 B Page-outsOS X upgrades don't cause problems, they reveal them. Every OS X upgrade since at least Jaguar has elicited complaints ranging from crashes, slowdowns, reduced battery life, everything short of an outbreak of hives. Most problems reported on this site are directly attributable to incompatible system modifications and poorly written or otherwise ill-conceived utilities. They exist in roughly the same proportion that have existed with every OS X upgrade since Jaguar, at least. Apple has no way to fix problems caused by software they did not develop and cannot control.
In your case, one definitely problematic system modification is the PACE anti-piracy app that does not appear to have been updated since Snow Leopard. I do not know what software you have that may require it, but it should either be updated or uninstalled before upgrading to Mavericks.
There are others that could be a concern including a launch daemon curiously named "com.hidden.deamon.plist". Well-written software should not be attempting to hide anything, but perhaps that was just an unfortunately chosen name. (Edit to add: read http://hiddenapp.com/support/installation/how-uninstall/ - it doesn't appear to have been updated for Mavericks either.)
If your boot time is excessive then an impending hard disk failure may be the cause. You must have a backup strategy, and rule out hardware failure as the possible cause of that symptom. If you have a backup strategy, then upgrading to Mavericks carries no risk whatsoever. If you don't like Mavericks, you can always restore your system from its backup. Merely having a backup often seems to preclude the need for it.
I upgraded many portable and desktop Macs of various ages and configurations. In every case not only was the upgrade completely uneventful, every Mac enjoyed quantifiable performance improvements. None of them have the notoriously problematic software or incompatible hardware modifications that seem to have caused others misery though. In broad terms those can be categorized as third party "anti-virus" or "security" junk, "cleaning" or "optimizing" utilities, any number of invasive Google services including Chrome, and similarly ill-conceived system hacks.
In your case the only potential concern with which I am familiar is PACE. Since I have no way of knowing what software you use I can only speculate what may require it, but I seem to recall PACE is or was used by Avid Pro Tools. Does that help?

Confused about logical table source
Hi,
I'm confused about logical table source(LTS), there are 'General', 'Column Mapping', 'Content' tabs in
LTS, in General tab ,there are some information, like 'Map to there tables' and 'joins',
just here, we have created relationships in physical layer and BMM layer, so I would like to ask what's the use of the 'joins' here?Hi Alpha,
Valid query, when you establish a complex join it is always between a logical fact and dimension table.Consider a scenario,
Example:w_person_dx is an extension table not directly joined to a fact but joins to a dimension w_person_d.
When you model the person_d tables in BMM, you ll have a single logical table with w_person_d as source. If you have to pull columns from both w_person_d and w_person_dx tables in a report, you add dx table as inner join to persond table in the general tab.Now when you check your physical query, you can see the inner join fired between the two dimensions.

Two boots for OS? (Something about kernel)
I have the latest generation Mac Pro with customized built, 1x 3.33gHz 6-core and 8 Gig of RAM.
Here's something strange happened to me lately... about two weeks ago, the OS X will not load during the first boot. I have mine set at verbose mode so I can see the messages and usually from a cold boot, it will mention something like kernelcache is out of date and the kernal loading is now stopped. It will automatically reboot and then everything went fine as the OS loads up fairly quickly.
Does anyone has any idea on this? I have resetted the SMB/EFI by power cycle but still doing the same.
Thanks guys!
It's not a problem, just annoying

Loading them individually takes too long. So they are put together into a kernel cache and loaded "all at once".
If the timestamp on the kernel cache disagrees with the timestamp on the directory that holds the individual extensions, something has changed -- start over.
If you boot into Safe Mode, this will do one pass of Disk Repair and also cause the loading of a minimal set of extensions. The next time you boot, the kernel cache will be rebuilt properly, and you should live happily ever after... maybe.
If you are booting 10.7 off a RAID Array not created under 10.7, you may continue to be in for a wild ride. Anomalies with installing onto and booting off a RAID Array are all over the early reviews of 10.7.
Consider going back to 10.6, or creating a "normal" boot drive with only System, Applications, Library, and the Hidden Unix files including paging/swap. Move all User files off to another drive except the original Admin user, and use that one only for Administration. -
Kernel extensions in backtrace using iPhoto
Every time i try to use iPhoto whether it be loading images, editing them or anything else, it ALWAYS crashes and makes the system almost impossible to use. Even when i repair and rebuild all the databases, it still happens straight after.
Its becoming beyond a joke now, can anyone please help - Below is a copy of the last error i received
Thank you to anyone who can help

Thunderbolt Bus:You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they might still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired free of charge, and you don't want to pay for the service, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Kernel extension problem after upgrade form 10.5.8 to 10.7
Dear Experts,
I was trying to prepare t show my students in the next term building MAC OS X "kernrl modules"
next to Linux kernel modules in the same way via compiling directly form source
While using MAC OS 10.5.8 then evereything in the
http://unixjunkie.blogspot.com/2006/12/kernel-extension-by-hand.html
worked well
But was to buy 10.6.3 in the last available MAC BOX Set in our conutry yesterday Using this Ibundlw I was to upgrade to the MAC OS X 10.7 Lion. Then I was not able to insert this kerne; extenion and I was unable to find any source about it except that since 10.6 there were changes in the system of producing kernel extension with no details.
My outputs
sudo kextload -verbose 6 ./MojKext.kext/
Password:
Kext user-space log filter changed from 0xff2 to 0xfff.
Kext kernel-space log filter changed from 0xff2 to 0xfff.

sudo kextutil -nt MojKext.kext

Check library declarations for your kext with kextlibs(8).
sudo kextlibs MojKext.kext -all-symbols
For all architectures:
No libraries found.
For x86_64:
0 symbol found in one library kext each.
This is beacuse I was removed printf from the source.
Is there anybody who is able to get me some informations/documentation, how to build kernel extensions, please?
Thank you for any help
I look forward hearing from you
Yours faitfully
Peter FodrekI think at a minimum you'll need to get Xcode 4.1 for use with Lion. It's free from the App Store.
And Kappy is right, the developer forums are more likely to be of help.

Question about kernel compilation from wiki
Hello,
I compile kernel in line with arch wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … rom_Source). In paragraph '2. With makepkg and pacman (Recommended)' are lines:
mv [kernel location]/* src/
cp -r [kernel location]/* src/
Does it make sense? First I move [kernel location] to src/ (I think it should be '/src/') and then I copy nonexistent [kernel location] to the same path.
Thanks
#edit:
I looked through word 'either' So now I'm not sure with this:
(my build directory is ~/kernelbuild)
1. in ~/kernelbuild create 'src' directory

Am I right?
Last edited by cinan (2009-08-22 12:16:34)Commands are correct, but as I said I was little confused about names/terms (eg kernel location-kernel source, making directory usr). I hope the wiki page will be more clear for users who never compiled custom kernel.

Kernel extensions show as directories
I was looking at the AMD and the Nvidia kernel extensions in /System/Library/Extensions to see if there was any info on the supported graphics cards in the Mavericks version of these files and I noticed something odd.
About 2/3 of the .kext files are presenting as directories.
For the few .kext files I did look at all I did was right click on the file and select "show package contents". Nothing was edited, or even opened in an editor. I do understand that .kes\xt files are basicly directories that are packaged up in a specific way.
Here is a snipet of what I am seeing...
I don't thing I even looked at any of the .kext files that are now showing as directories. I'm not sure if this will cause a problem on reboot or not.
Has anyone seen this issue before? Is this a finder problem?
Thanks,

If some of the items have lost that attribute, then your installation is corrupt and you should reinstall. You should also get rid of any third-party "utilities" that could have caused the damage.
Your screenshot doesn't show anything abnormal. -
Udev: confusion about identifier ATTRS{idProduct}
Hi,
i'm confused about how exactly udev identifies a device, imho the idProduct identifier is (in this specific case) inconsistent.
Short story:
'lsusb' and 'udeadm info' indentify the devices idProduct as "1002", but to get udev rules working i have to use ATTRS{idProduct}=="1001" though.
Long story:
I have this usb-to-midi device (midisport 2x2), which needs to load firmware to work (midisport-firmware). This is the udev rule to load the firmware:
#/etc/udev/rules.d/42-midisport-firmware.rules
# MidiSport 2x2
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0763", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1001", RUN+="/sbin/fxload -s /usr/share/usb/maudio/MidiSportLoader.ihx -I /usr/share/usb/maudio/MidiSport2x2.ihx -D %N"
This rule ("idProduct=1001") works!
Changing "idProduct" to "1002" does not work.
However, here's the output of
~# lsusb
Bus 003 Device 007: ID 0763:1002 Midiman MidiSport 2x2
and
~# udevadm info -a -p /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb3/3-2/

which both indicate, the correct idProduct would be "1002"!?
The midisport box is the only device where this inconsistence appears, all other usb-devices (hdds, sticks, sound card, dvb-t stick, mp3 player) get identified as expected.
I want to know, if anybody can explain this/ if anybody has had similar experiences!Looking at the udevadm info output, it shows ATTR{idproduct}=="1002" and ATTRS{idproduct}=="0001" and your rule uses ATTRS{idproduct}=="1001".
Have you tried with just ATTR{idproduct}=="1002" (note no S)? Looking at the output of info, I would still not expect ATTRS{idproduct}=="1001" to work, but udev's changed a fair bit in the last few years and the old bible for rules is way out of date. -

Hi there reb10!
Judging by the issue you are seeing, you might want to try reinstalling your operating system. This procedure is pretty simple, and we have an article that can walk you through the steps for completing this:
OS X Mountain Lion: Reinstall OS X

I would urge you to make sure you have a good backup of your data before going through this process, even though it should not affect your personal files on your computer. An article about backing up your data can be found here:

Kernel extension : keyboard shortcut trigger
Hi everybody !
I have been stuck for two weeks on this problem now. Not by lack of research ; most probably because I am new to kernel ext programming.
I would like the user to be able to trigger specific low level actions, that needs to be executed from within the kernel space. However, I could not find a way, for instance, to register for notifications about keyboard-related events in a kernel extension. (such as specific sets of key being pressed)
Does anyone knows how to achieve such programming ?
The former solution is preferred, however, on a last resort, I am also willing to consider listening to all keyboards events, and sort them out. But I could not find any (recent) info on that one and I understand that such discussion topic is most unwelcomed...
Any idea ?
ThxActually, I am not using the kext because I don't want to have to interact with the graphic server / windows manager.
I found a post about this, from people who tried to add a "CDROM Eject key" kind of functionality on a mac. Below is what they did.
But it only worked with 10.0 to 10.2 I think. Clearly it does not work for 10.6.
I want to do something very similar. If you have a suggestion... I will try it !
*Intercepting at the IOHIDSystem Driver*
The best place to intercept the data flow with current knowledge turned out to be the IOHIDSystem class in the kernel. Unfortunately this class is statically linked into the kernel, it's not possible to replace it with a custom driver. The main challenge was to replace the kernel's implementation of IOHIDSystem with a slightly modified version.
If the IOKit had been written in Objective-C instead of C++ (like its ancestor, the DriverKit), things had been simple: We could create a subclass of IOHIDSystem and tell it to "Pose As" the IOHIDSystem class. Every creation of an IOHIDSystem object would have been an instance of our subclass.
Since this is real life and not fiction, it has not been so easy. We nevertheless implemented it the Objective-C way as posing subclass, but we had to do some low-level C++ runtime hacking. iJect contains a subclass of IOHIDSystem which overwrites two virtual methods which process keyboard events. The modified versions of the methods simply call the superclass implementations, or they ignore the event by not calling the superclass implementation. The tricky part is how to make the kernel use our subclass instead of IOHIDSystem. It's necessary to understand how virtual C++ methods work. Instances of classes which have virtual methods have an additional (hidden) instance variable: a pointer to a v-table. This v-table is a function pointer table pointing to the implementations of the virtual methods. To implement the posing, we simply overwrite the pointer to IOHIDSystem's vtable with a pointer to our class' v-table. This turns the IOHIDSystem instance into an instance of our class.
