Confused about what to download

Hi all,
I am getting back into Java after 5 years and am totally at a loss as to how to set up my environment and what I really need.
I am trying to download the j2EE SDK and I am offered the following choices:
Java Application Platform SDK Update 2
Java EE 5 SDK Update 2
Download the Components Independently
and under each choice, I am given the following options:
Download
Download with JDK
Download with Tools
I downloaded the "Java EE 5 SDK Update 2" using the "Download with JDK" option" but when the time came to set my "Java_Home" variable, I have no clue as to what directory to set it to. The software was downloaded under c:\sun\sdk. whereas all the forums online show that the JAVA_HOME variable should be set to something like "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02".
What am I doing wrong? The Sun naming convention has me totally confused to say the least. Can someone please shed some light on this? Thanks!
KD

Sorry that this isn't clearer. Welcome back to Java, by the way!
Having downloaded and installed the "with JDK" option, you should find the JDK installed in a subdirectory under where you installed the Java EE SDK itself.
To be honest, it has been a long time since I installed that variant myself so I don't remember for sure what directory that'll be but if I recall correctly it'll be obvious at the first level below the installation directory.

  • Confused about what I should do about my PC's declining performance.

I'm very confused on what I should about my PC's declining performance. My desktop computer is a HP Pavilion 20 All-in-one. The original OS was WIN 8, current OS WIN 8.1. I received my computer 11/8/13 and upgraded to WIN 8.1 just a few weeks later due to annoyance of it's pop-ups. The first installation of it failed but the very next day it installed on it's own and was successful. Not to long after that I began to have problems with performance. Lagging, freezes, blank or black screens, poor graphics and choppy audio and app crashes (which were solved under my HP warranty). A few months after the 8.1 upgrade I received a message in HP Support Assistant stating that my computer model was never tested with 8.1 and that could be the cause of my performance issues. The message also came with a compatibility scan which was of no use since 8.1 was already installed, and was recommended to either wait for drivers to become available or uninstall.  I got tired of waiting so Dec. 2014 I did a refresh back to 8 and didn't reinstall the 8.1. I got back my computers excellent performance. Unfortunately that was short lived due to 8.1 automatically reinstalled it's self without an option to decline it, just a warning that in 2 days it'll restart my computer to finish the installation. That happened last week and now my computer is back to poor performance again. The audio is choppy (esp. when playing games), and after a few hours of use a humming sound starts, at first it's choppy (on & off), then it becomes constant. Also sluggish loading and lagging esp. of the mouse curser which happens on and off. I checked the task manager one day while that was happening and the Disk and CPU were turning red and going up to 100% and the Memory also spikes high but not up to 100 (in between spikes MEM stays around 30% maybe that's due to recent install of The Sims 4.  Today I had a critical event happen with the Kernal Power and my computer restarted it's self. Those are the issues that I need help fixing but I also have questions that I hope can be answered here or get pointed in the right direction to an answer. 1) How or where can I get a straight forward answer to the compatibility of my computer with 8.1. When I had HP tech support I asked about the message I received from them and I was told to disregard the message because they are compatible. But after I refreshed back to WIN 8 the message came back and there was a note at the bottom of the page stating that the message could be old and possibly there are drivers available now. So I'm perplexed, if the two are compatible then why am I having the same problems that the message has listed as signs of incompatibility? 2) When I use HP Support Assistant to check for updates no downloads are available but when I use HP's website page software and driver downloads by product. It shows 10 downloads available for driver audio, driver chipset, driver grapics, driver network, BIOS, diagnostic, and software multi-media.  Should I download all of them or do I need to check them out one by one to identify if they're old or new. 3)  When my computer is idle why are background tasks performing scans that show on my action center icon but the stop as soon as the cursor is moved? and how can I identify which background processes & services can be ended or suspended to improve performance while playing high resource using games like The Sims 4? Here is some more info about my PC and thank you for taking out the time to help me.

I would suggest that you update your Windows 8 drivers to the Windows 8.1 version drivers.
I had a look and the Windows 8.1 drivers are all newer versions.
Start with the Chipset, then Video, then the others, but not BIOS [yet].
    Reboot after each install.
If performance doesn't seem better after updating your drivers to the Windows 8.1 versions then I suggest you also perform the BIOS update that is also available.

  • Somewhat confused about what RAM to get for PB G4 (the DDR2 model)

Hello. This is a long post since I'll try and explain in great detail what the problem is. I've purchased a refurbished 15.2" Power Book G4 off ebay the other day, it is the last 15 inch powerbook G4 apple released in October '05 since it has DDR2 RAM.
I haven't got the laptop yet, but figured I'd think ahead and get some more RAM for it to max it out. However I'm in a confused state of mind now as to what RAM will actually work in the laptop. On the Apple specification page for the laptop (which also lists the 1.67ghz 17 inch and the 1.5ghz 12 inch), it states for the 15 inch that it works with:
"512MB (single SO-DIMM) of PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM running at 333MHz; two SO-DIMM slots; support for up to 2GB"
Is that correct though? PC2-4200 RAM is 533MHz, not 333MHz. Or at least all the PC2-4200 RAM I can find is running at 533MHz. The 333MHz DDR2 modules are called PC2-2700. The other odd thing is, I use lowendmac.com a lot for specifications since I find they tend to list more details than Apple generally do (or at least they tend to go into more detail). On the page for the same laptop they state:
"RAM: 512 MB, expandable to 2 GB using 533 MHz PC2-4200 DDR2 RAM"
So they are apparently in agreement with my train of thought here. Not that I'm disagreeing with the official Apple specifications of course, it's just really confusing. Now I know I need SO-DIMM RAM, so I went onto an online retailer I generally use for this sort of stuff and found some Kingston value ram real cheap:
    1GB, SO-DIMM, PC2-4200 533MHz, Non-ECC CL4 Unbuffered 1.8v module. Model number KVR533D2S4/1G.
Is this going to work in the laptop? If I believe Lowendmac.com, it will. If I believe Apple specs, it probably won't, or at least it may cause undesirable operation. Just to see what Kingston had to say on this, I went onto Kingston's website (valueram.com), I used the configurator search function and put in powerbook g4 as model, and it showed me a list of powerbooks. I picked mine (15 inch using DDR2) and sure enough it came up with the right page, and listed two RAM modules Kingston sell. A 512mb (of which I'll ignore), and the 1GB (the one I want).
The 1GB module was model number KTA-PB533/1G. Now just looking at that suggests to me that it is 533MHz, since it has 533 in the model name (and a trend with Kingston model numbers is to put the speed in the model name). Just to be sure though I did look for some detailed specifications but oddly enough I couldn't find any for that RAM module on their website so I googled it instead, and came up with several websites suggesting that it was 533MHz.
So, what should I do here? It would seem Apple's specs saying 333MHz was wrong, however I've got two RAM modules by Kingston here and they both appear to have the same specifications except one is obviously specifically for the powerbook, the other is just for generic laptops. So unless the one specifically for the powerbook is a different shape or something I can't see any reason why I should should pay a lot more money for the specific model, when I can get the apparent same exact RAM module for a bargain.
    This is, confusing.

Strong recommendation to not go 'cheap' on the memory. Powerbooks are particular about the quality of memory, due primarily to the way Apple manages power on the memory bus. While some memory can meet Apple's published specs, it can fail in use. if you scan these discussions, you'll find people who have tried the KVR (Kingston value ram) memory and it has not worked for them. If you want to try it, suggest you get it from someplace you can return it and get your money back.
As already mentioned, Crucial (also sold as Micron) and Samsung are two brands that work reliably. Regular Kingston memory works well too. Crucial guarantees their memory will work when chosen from their memory selector at http://www.crucial.com . You can usually find a discount coupon on the web too. Samsung you buy through distributors, and I'd also recommend OWC at http://www.macsales.com . Kingston you already know is at http://www.kingston.com . You can scan the discussions for other brands that have worked (like Hynix, mentioned in the prior post, for example).

  • Confusion about what is going on with my 'repair'

    Hi,
On the 27th November, my phone line stopped working, no dial tone, and when dialing in, the phone does not ring, although my broadband is still working fine.
Reported the fault via the website on the 28th November.  Got a call three or so days later saying the fault is in my property, and maybe my equiptment.  Was advised that if my equiptment I would get charged £130.  Not wanting to get charged, I checked my phone in mother in laws house (it worked), checked her phone in my house (did not work).  But, because I was away with work and this took a bit of time, the 'fault' had expired on the website and my only option was to re-report it, which I did on the 9th December.
This morning (12th December) I got a call from BT saying the fault was inside my property, and maybe my equiptment, so might have to pay etc. etc, and should expect a call from the engineer about his visit.
This afternoon (12th December), I email and an SMS saying "We've had a look at your problem and think we can fix it by the end of 15/12/2011".  So, now really confused, is an engineer coming, or have they now found a fault elsewhere, that they can fix without a visit?  Why another 3 days?  Phoned the (Indain) call centre, no help what so ever, just reading from a script, and could not answer any of my questions.
Really frustrating as been without a phone since 27th November and can only get a (bad) mobile signal outside in the cold and rain.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks for letting us know, good to hear the engineer was able to find the source of the problem (though I'm sorry it took longer than expected).

  • Still confused about what's a "blank" tape...

    Hiya,
Please can someone point me at, because I haven't managed to find, an explanation of what OSB regards as a "blank" tape, and how this fits with labelling them?
If I pre-label and pre-assign a media family to a new tape using obtar, does this make OSB prefer it to a truly blank tape? Or does it only prevent it from being used if the media family doesn't match?
I ask because I pre-labelled one of the several tapes in our silo with the media family for the backup I was about to run, and ran the backup, expecting it to use that tape. I was a little perturbed to find that it had used a different tape, blatting all over what was on there previously.
Is this expected behaviour? I'd prefer to be able to control it better than this, as we are quite likely to have other tapes in the silo, some of which have useful data on them but are not OSB tapes. I don't like the idea of it randomly picking one and writing over it...
How can I tell OSB to only use the tapes I've explicitly told it it can? I imagined that was what labelling was all about, but it appears not.
    Can anyone advise?
    Thanks,
    David

    actually it doesn't:

    The 64-bit architectures PPC64, s390x, sparc64 and AMD64 must place 64-bit libraries in /lib64, and 32-bit (or 31-bit on s390) libraries in /lib.
sure, arch isn't intended to be a multilib system, but there _are_ two directories lib and lib64, and both are created (and needed) by core (i don't know if extra too) and used by community packages.
so why not go the more transparent and simple way?

  • Confused about what happened to layout tools in CC

I'm wondering what happened to the tools that used to be in DW CS6 on the bottom of the layout window?  It seems that many of the tools have been eliminated?  Is there someway to get them back?  I've attached screenshots of the same doc in CS6 and CC.  Please note that the option to make the view 100% is gone as well as the pointer and the hand tool. Please help!  Thanks!!!

  • I am so confused about what format is used to fit the most music on my 6th gen 16 gig, does anybody speak not tech to give me some guidance?

i am seriously unable to figure out how you format your music library to fit as much as possible. i have got to be doing something wrong. i have a brand new 16 gig 6th gen and it filled up half way thru my content. i do not want ,nor do i have any other stuff on it. no videos or pictures, no nike fit, nothing.but i did set it to do the album cover in custom color. i am wondering if that is what is hogging my gigs? i have the settings for music as mp3 and at the lowest setting of kilobites, or bitrates, or whatever its called (?!) 128... is there any hope of squeezing more music on this little guy? does anybody have any hints or suggestions ...also while we are delving.. how do you check the old content to see what its formatted as. i do not have the newest version of itunes because when i hooked my new ipod up to my computer for the first time it wasnt showing up in itunes devices. as far as i could tell there was a glitch with the latest version of itunes so i uninstalled and went back to previous version. it seemed to be okay after that but hey  i'm the goon who cant get all her music on the ipod that everyone assured me would hold all of my content. otherwise i would have gotten the ipod with 64gigs. please help if you arent too annoyed with my ineptitude. it would win you my everlasting gratitude and you get a star in your crown... so thats nice...

thank-you! yeah, i cant see going to 64.  as it stood sound quality was dodgy. good on some stuff, great on others, and terrible on a few. i have some great news...my ipod is not showing up in itunes.   again. i give up. it has music on it. its full to the tippy top. i fooled around with some of the things the trouble shooter wizard thing suggested last night for hours. didnt fix it. after awhile i was just going in circles. i will just live with the thing the way it is. but i will say one thing; after reading some of the posted issues other folks are having i'm just glad i didnt put everything in the cloud....peace

  • Making the move to 16:9, but totally confused about what settings to use!

Hi, It seems to me that since all new TV's being sold are wide-screen, it is time for me to stop making videos in 4:3. But I am completely stumped by the procedure to work in 16:9. I have shot my footage in standard definition, 16:9. The final product will be a DVD created in DVD Studio Pro. I would like the picture to fill a widescreen TV, and.... when played on a 4:3 screen, I would like it to fill the width of the screen and be letterboxed on top and bottom.
I think that I am correct to capture this footage into Final Cut Express, using Easy Setup, and choosing 'Anamorphic'. At least that gives me a 16:9 screen in FCE.
But can someone tell me what settings to use in DVDSP when I when I import that video? I tried to import Anamorphic video into DVDSP, and went to Preferences, and chose 16:9 Letterbox. I got a wide screen, but my footage came in as a squished 4:3 image. I'm totally at a loss, and would very much appreciate any help you can give.
    Thanks very much, Bob

Yes, Anamorphic is the Easy Setup you'd want to use in FCE.
When I say it's distorted, that means anamorphic is recorded to tape squished (much like how it imports into DVDSP for you) and that the format demands being unsqueezed during playback. Sorry, if I scared you.
The encoding settings are also available in DVDSP's Preferences under the Encoding tab.
Also - and this is the single most important element of this workflow - in addition to setting the default Display Mode to 16:9 Letterbox, be sure to confirm that this is not overridden (for whatever reason) after you've placed your clips onto a track. So check the Inspector and make sure Display mode is correct. (It's been known to happen once in a blue moon and, if not readjusted, will mean that your DVD will not display correctly on any proper setup)

  • Confused about what displays will work

I am to understand correctly that if I buy a mac mini i can use most monitors, keyboards, and mouse with it. Even if it was made for a PC? Can I use the stuff off my old PC on my new mac mini.

As long as the mouse and keyboard are USB, yes they should work without a problem (serial keyboard/mouse will not work). The monitor should also work with the included DVI->VGA adaptor.

  • Confused about the instructions for installing MySQL on my OS X client

I installed MySQL for OS X as recommended here:
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/opensource/osdb.html
it looks like I managed to created a test database in the mysql directory, but now can't access it.
Basically, I'm confused about what to do after installing the MySQL server about setting permissions, getting databases to be where I want them to be, etc.
I tried download phpMyAdmin, since I am used to using that via cPanel on my ISP, but don't know how to use it on my Mac. Do I need to start up Apache to do that? And if I do that, won't it interfere with the mongrel server that I'm trying to use in the separate Ruby on Rails instructions?
I guess I could probably do all my development online via my ISP, which supports Ruby on Rails and where it is easy to set up MySQL databases, but if I could just figure out how to use MySQL on my Mac it would be fun to try to do this development offline.
    Any hints?
    Thanks,
    doug

Have you done anything past those instructions? like creating MySQL user accounts, granting permissions, etc?
There's a whole lot more to running MySQL that just installing it (and I'm not sure why Apple suggest building from scratch when MySQL offer binary distributions which do all the hard work for you.
Once installed you should follow the MySQL Post Install Instructions for guidance on setting up accounts and configuring MySQL.
As for the PHPMyAdmin question, yes, you'll need Apache running. Whether that will conflict with any other web services you're running depends on how they're configured. I've never heard of mongrel to be able to advise further there.

  • Bit Confused About Leopard Firewall

    Hey ya'll!
I'm a little confused about what's going on with the Leopard firewall. It seemed that before, you could choose an application, and which ports you wanted to associate with it, via the System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall tab. Now, they went and moved it, and you can only choose the app, and whether it can receive incoming connections. OK, fine. So let's see what ports are open:
    Thee-MacBook:~ rick$ sudo ipfw list
    Password:
33300 deny icmp from any to me in icmptypes 8
65535 allow ip from any to any
Huh? How come I'm only seeing two rules here?
My original concern was for SoulseeX, and whether the required range of ports were open. While I can search and download, others have problems downloading from me, and I cannot directly connect to others, and other weirdness. So I decided to start checking things out.
I do have SoulseeX listed in the Firewall tab, and set to receive incoming connections. But when I used this site <http://closer.s11.xrea.com/etc/port_scan.php> to test port 2234, it returned "failed".
In short, here's what I'm wondering:
Is the Firewall tab in System Preferences using ipfw?
By setting an app in the Firewall tab in System Preferences, is the entire range of ports the app wants, in SoulseeX' case, 2234, 2235, 2236, 2237, 2238, 2239, and 2240, made available?
How can I see what rules are being used, what ports are open?
Will writing (a couple of) my own rules to ipfw screw up the other settings in the Firewall tab? I would, if possible, like to keeps things simple, and not have to rewrite all the rules by hand. Besides, I'm not exactly an expert!
    TIA!

Leopard's application firewall is not a port firewall. I'm not sure where you would be able to see the actual port numbers that an application has opened, but your failures may be due to the ports being stealthed. Theipfw firewall is still there if you want to use it - the new firewall won't overrule it.

  • About what can be done with free tools today

    Hi,
I'm quite new to MHP and JavaTV. I've seen many web pages that informed me about MHP (like Steve's one, thanks if you see this message), but I'm still a bit confused about what can and cannot be done with the free tools available today, eg XleTView, openMHP or others.
I'd like to fetch a DVB stream (or an object carousel? I'm not sure about it) from a DVB-T card (which has BDA drivers) and access it with MHP (in order to find which services are available, etc...).
Tell me if I'm wrong, I think XleTView or openMHP can't access my DVB-T card, it's just useful to test Xlets.
Is there a way to have it access the DVB-T card, or even a stream or an object carousel that would be on my hard drive?
Many thanks, and sorry for the silly questions.

    [oops]
when I say "it's just useful to test Xlets", I don't want to say it does only minor things. I understand all the MHP stuff is complex to implement, so don't take it bad, I just expressed myself the wrong way :)
I'm grateful to the programmers who help to do this. Thanks!

I understand that i have to install the Runtime Repository in the database computer and the Target Schema through the client's computer...
so all this while... i am just confuse about what to install into the source database and what to install into the new database...
    Please help...

Location is a logical entity in your OWB design that can be either a database schema, a flat file location, an SAP application location etc. Once you complete your design and are ready to deploy the design into the runtime environment, you will have to 'register' the locations by providing the physical details of your location to OWB (user name/password, database, hostname etc.).
I am a bit confused by your configuration - are the source and the target in two separate schemas or in the same schema? Your posts are somewhat contradictory.
If they are in two different schemas, you should:
    1. Create a source module pointing to a source schema (you can then import data object structures from the source schema - i.e. you don't have to create source tables manually in OWB, but you can import them into the module automatically). This module will have a source location (for example SRC_LOC).
    2. Create a target module where all your target objects will be (i.e. where the data will be loaded). This module will have a different location (TGT_LOC). In your target module you will also create the mappings.
    3. When deploying, you will register SRC_LOC with the physical details of your source schema, while the target location will be registered with the physical details of the target schema. The code generated by OWB during deployment will make sure that the data is extracted from the source schema and inserted into the target schema (either by generating and using DB links or by qualifying the schemas in the extraction queries if source and target are in the same database instance).
On the other hand, if both source and target objects are in the same db schema, you can have all your objects in the same target module and you will only have to register the location of this target module when deploying (LOC_TGT).
That said, there can be a variety of reasons why there is no data in the target after you run the extract mapping that have nothing to do with locations, such as logical errors in the mapping (an inappropriate filter or a wrong join), insufficient privileges etc. I suggest you take a look in the runtime audit browser that should contain the error messages relative to your mapping.

    Hi Maahjoor,
It is a very good idea to get some training before starting this quest :-)
It will save you a lot of time.
