Connect 5G to stereo - headphone jack vs. line out

Is it better to connect my iPod to my home stereo using the 3.5mm headphone jack or buying the Apple Dock and using the 3.5mm "line out" (assuming either would go into the "AUX" RCA inputs on my stereo)?
I have read that the "line out" from the Dock isn't a true line out since the click wheel still controls the volume.
Using the headphone jack, as I am now, I have to have the iPod volume up all the way and my stereo up quite high to get adequate volume. Would this still be the case using the Dock?

You get loads better sound with the dock althought you can control it with the clickwheel. Using the headphone jack limits your sound to a small amount while having a line out and connecting it to speakers lets you able to turn your music up as loud as you want. Also has better sound.

  • There is a problem with the left headphone or stereo  headphone jack connection in the ipod touch 2nd generation

I have had my ipod touch 2nd generation for 3 yrs. Now its been a year with this problem but i never seem to get it fixed because i lost my warranty and repair certificate a year ago. So  the problem is whenever I put in a headphone jack for some reason only the right head phone or right speaker works not the left, but when i place the ipod on the docking port both speakers on my stereo work.
Now I have taken great care of this thing. Never lost it. I assume that a connection inside the jack port is pushed in from debrie (forgot how to spell that word)  because, I always place my ipod into my pocket. The only way to get the left speaker or headphone to work is to push on the headphone jack so it tilts, then the left speaker works; but when i release it the left speaker or headphone turns off or stop making sound. So i know its not wiring problems its the connection for the headphone jack to the ipods jack's connection for the left speaker. Though microphones work.
My question is can this be a DIY or do i have to take it in to a local apple store. Problem i lost the warranty and protection repair form or license 2 years ago. I have had no problems with my ipod at all these years until this problem has consisted to happen since last year.
    Anything?
    Thanks,

  • Headphone / Optical Dig. Out to Stereo Headphone jack?

Goal: To output sound from my Powerbook G4 to my stereo speakers.
Problem: My stereo is an older model and only has a headphone jack (no RCA); the speakers connect via bare wires and clips in the back of the main base unit.
Question: What are my options? I've read there are minijacks that can convert headphone to RCA, but in my case I'm sort of going from headphone jack to headphone jack. How do I ensure that the sound from my Powerbook outputs through my stereo speakers?
If there's a thread that I missed, I'll happily read it instead. Thanks for your time.
    Powerbook G4 15" Mac OS X (10.4.4)
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Your simplest and best bet is to get a set of small speakers that run from the PB headphone socket, there are quite a few alternatives and they're not that expensive.
You can't connect the PB directly to your speakers as the headphone output is not powerful enough to drive larger speakers, which also tend to be less efiicient. If your base unit has inputs for other equipment (usually called Aux), then if this uses 2 inputs - left and right, you can get a Y cable which connects a single plug to the PB headphone output and 2 plugs (left and right) to the base unit Aux input. You can't justconnect 2 headphone sockets together as both wil be outputting sound at each other. As an alternative, If you buy some speakers and an amp or receiver then you can also do what I've just suggested.
I hope that helps, it's difficult to know what the exact options are without being able to see your stereo.
    You might find some good options here;

  • BC 3.0 Realtek driver thinks headphone jack is line in (iMac)

The computer in question is an iMac from the previous generation (Radeon 2400).
I noticed some other people having problems with external speakers, and I think I've pretty much figured out that the Realtek driver thinks the headphone jack on this computer is an input.
Anyone have a solution besides rolling back?

Yes, I had the same problem.
Then I installed the Realtek from Boot Camp 2.1 in compatibility mode under Windows XP.
Then he returned to work well!

  • Headphone socket and line-out probl

Hey I've got a Creative Jukebox 3 and over the past few months the headphone socket has stopped working properly, I can only hear through one side. I got past this by using my line-out to listen instead but that has also done the same thing, only difference is it is the opposite headphone I can't hear out of! :smileyvery-happy: I've tried changing headphones so it's definitely the player. Any ideas? I'm probably going to buy a new one seeing as it is two years old now but I would like to get the old one working again.
    Cheers!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Mac Pros, which your profile says you have use a Toslink connector. This means for certain DTS sound systems, you can get up to 5 channels of independent audio that run simultaneously. If you just use standard RCA audio connectors, unfortunately you are stuck with a single stereo channel per port that can be used only on that port at a time. It might be time to consider a multichannel audio system that works with your Toslink connector. Logitech makes a few of them.

  • Headphones vs. Line Out - a Hassle

Just took delivery of a shiny new Mac Pro and noticed that, when I plug headphones into the jack beneath the Power button, I must manually select Headphones through System Preferences (In System Preferences, "Headphones" becomes "Internal Speakers" when headphones are unplugged). To get sound back, through my "Line Out" speakers, I must, once again, manually select this option in System Prefs. My G5 recognized the insertion of the headphone jack regardless of which "Out" option had been selected - Internal Speakers/Headphones, Line Out (or Digital Line Out). I use headphones frequently, and all the opening and closing of System Prefs is a hassle. Is this the way Apple designed the new Mac Pro? if so, is there a script, Automator, or 3rd party workaround which allows you to easily "toggle" between headphones and Line Out speakers? Thanks.

I swear my G5(s) didn't work like this until one day I did something, and my Mac Pro does it as well. There has to be a setting somewhere for this.

  • 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack has broken. I want money, Apple.

I went to the Apple store today and found out that I have been inflicting irreversible damage to my iPod by wrapping the earphones around it when I'm not using it. Apple told me that, +while this is a common problem+, they don't replace or repair the earphone socket. When my mom questioned why no one told me that wrapping is harmful, they shrugged and said that +it wasn't a common enough problem to publicize it+. *Furthermore*, this is the *exact* same problem that broke my last iPod. No one even mentioned a '+stressed left ear sensor+' back then. Apple has cost me (old iPod + new iPod prices) +$550+ for _THEIR LACK OF PUBLICITY ON THE SUBJECT_. I've been looking through the iPod touch safety manual and it says absolutely nothing on this problem. I request a *repair* and an _OFFICIAL warning from Apple_ so that other users will not fall victim to this.

That's why I am frustrated. I didn't know it was harming my iPod. +I didn't even know it was putting stress on the socket+. No one informed me of my error, not even after the first time. Besides, coffee is naturally hot. You expect it to be like that when you order it. The iPod is a portable music-playing device, so it's only natural that someone should capitalize on this by wrapping the headphones around it. I know I'm not the only who does this, so I'm disappointed in Apple for not issuing a warning.
The coffee comment was referring to a lady that sued McDonalds when she spilled coffee in her lap and got burned. At some point people have to take some personal responsibility and quit blaming someone else for their mistakes. Apple does not state in their warranty every specific thing that can invalidate the warranty. That would be impossible.
The coffee comment was referring to a lady that sued McDonalds when she spilled coffee in her lap and got burned. Of course it was hot. She would have complained if it wasn't. At some point people have to take some personal responsibility and quit blaming someone else for their mistakes. If you are concerned with your earphone cables lying around, you could get a set of bluetooth headphones.

  • Is there a way to use my headphone jack as line-in as advertised?

  • Worn-out headphone jack as optical out for computer audio via external DAC

I have been using my iMac's headphone output jack to connect with a DAC and my audio system for some time now, but I apparently have inserted and removed the optical plug connector so many times to switch between DAC and internal iMac speakers that it has worn out: pulling the plug out of the jack no longer always switches the sound output back to internal speakers - Built-in. I have to pull it in and out several times and even this doesn't always work. Is anyone aware of a switch I could install to do this without constantly pulling the plug out and plugging it back in?

My suggestion to work around this problem would be to hook up an Airport Express. The AE also has an optical out the same as your iMac. As long as your wireless connection is robust enough you should be able to stream from your iMac to your AE and then have the optical cable connect between your AE and your DAC, which then connects to your Integrated Amp/Receiver/Pre-Amp (depending on your system configuration).
I assume because you are using the optical out and connecting to an external DAC that you are looking for a high level of Audio quality ?

  • Macbook Headphone Jack no sound out but mic works problem Mavericks

    Hi,
I currently was plugging my macbook Pro to a amplifier to listed music louder, It never worked. After that i Puted a Headphone and worked and unpluged it and plug the headphone again and it did not work anymore. But if i put my blackberry headphones the mic works perfect and on system preferences it says Headphone Port so the mb pro recognizes the headphone but is not able to exit the sound to the headphones. I formated the macbook pro but the problem persists. I'm trying to find a software solution because in my country Venezuela there is no apple store or Certified Tech Service so I'm on my own on this.
    Hope you can help.
    Thanks in Advance.

I changed them on varius settings and nothign happened. Any other ideas? Thanks

  • Use the headphone jack output and bluetooth at the same time

I am going to buy a blue-tooth headset for my 3GS.
Am I able to use the blue tooth mic and the headphone plug on the 3GS in the phone conversation?
Message was edited by: Winson Ip

Now I listen the music with the Ipod through headphone amplifier for better sound quality. The amplifier is plug into the dock port. I have to buy a bluetooth headset come with the 3.5mm jack. I want the sound output still from the headphone jack or line-out. The bluetooth headset work like a cordless mic. Also, the headphone amplifier still getting work.

  • Record sound coming from a headphone jack

I have stereo whose only output option is a headphone jack.
I've tried connecting to an aux input for the speakers connected to my iMac and directly into the line in port but am having trouble finding software to capture the recordings.
Audacity, Apowersoft Audio Recorder, Adobe Audition will not recognize the input.
QuickTime, GarageBand and Audio Hijack all recognize the input, but only records and plays back out of one channel (and yes, the balance is set to the middle). But when I'm using the aux input from the speakers, both channels play.
What type of device do I need to connect between the stereo's headphone jack the line in port?

We need to know which iMac variant (there are over a hundred) and what version of the Mac OS you are running. Those affect how you get to a result.

  • Distortion workaround: can chip swap using line out jack for rear out ja

I am using a SB Audigy EAX. My headphones sound like a blown speaker mostly out of left ear. I tryed everything including reinstalling xp on my dell and nothing worked [yes I tried other headphones to no avail]. Finally I played around with the balance and realised that the left and right channels were leaking together slightly so I think there is a physical problem on the card. As a temp solution I have set my card to use four speakers and plugged my headphones into the rear out which is a different jack on the card. It sounds fine from the rear out jack but I wish there was a way to have the card use the rear out jack for line out output. In other words is there a program or driver that can tell the chip to swap line out jack for rear out jack? My card is no longer under warranty and I only ever use heaphones. The problem with my temp solution is that some winamp plugins and games don't function properly.

On my sound blaster ex, when connecting through the analogue 6 channel output, Line Out 3 is a 4 pole mini jack. My sound system is only 5. and doesn't need the centre rear speaker. Does any one know if in this case I can just use a standard 3 pole stereo jack for subwoofer and front center?
For analog 5. it should work. See the user's guide.
