Connecting airport extreme, netgear dsl modem, windows 7, and Macbook pro

I'm having a problem connecting my airport extreme to my netgear modem, windows 7 pc and my Macbook Pro.  Until a few days ago, I had a Westell wireless dsl modem and everything worked fine.  Now, the only way I can connect to the internet is through my desktop pc and the hardwired modem.

If your goal is to extend/boost the range of your Netgear router with either or both of the AirPorts, this will not work wirelessly ... at least, not completely by wireless. That is because, WDS is not standard and each manufacturer has had creative license to implement it as they see fit for their products.
Instead, you have at least two other choices to use the Netgear (as the main Internet router) with the AirPorts:
Connect one AirPort directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure both AirPorts for an extended wireless network. In this configuration, you would be running two separate wireless networks; one created by the Netgear, and the second the extended network created by the AirPorts.
Connect both AirPorts directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure all of the routers for a roaming network. In this configuration, there would be a "single" wireless network where wireless network clients can literally roam from one router to another and still be on the "same" wireless network.

The problem is not the router.. the issue is the vpn has put your computer in a different IP range with a different gateway. When you turn off the vpn the computer returns to local lan and can print.
Some vpn software allows you to set gateway to use local net instead of remote gateway or access to other webistes or local lan.
    Read up the issue.

    Cisco vpn client..
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/239113
I did not search much.. just grabbed the first article I could find that explains the issue.
The whole point of the vpn is whilst it is connected your computer is NOT part of the Local Lan .. it is part of the Remote LAN via the vpn tunnel.
It is also a security risk using split tunnelling so often it will not be allowed.
Plug the printer directly into the computer via usb or whatever.. Local connection will work.. not local lan.

If you have not already done so, your chances will really improve if you....
    1) Connect the printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme
    2) Download and install Bonjour Print Services for Windows on the PC

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If home sharing isn't enabled on the Apple TV, you will need the aluminium remote that came with it to do so.

  • Bridge mode for airport extreme or dsl modem? Recomendations?

I'm upgrading to a 'blisteringly fast' 12 Mbps with my local DSL ISP (no cable in my area), and I'm thinking of changing out my
My current, antiquated setup is with a Speedstream 5200 Modem/Router (8 Mbps max) with a Linksys E1200 802.11n router. We have an Apple TV with HDMI into a stout Panasonic plasma, 2 Macs, 3 iPads (2xgen4 + mini), 3 5C iPhones and an old Dell Winbox (XP vintage that I will toss out) that access this configuration in a good-sized house (2 stories, ~4000 sq.ft.).
The Linksys 'n' speed router is somewhat adequate, but we want to do movie/video/music streaming to the AppleTV and we want to buy a new Mac (probably a Mac-mini to replace the Winbox). I also want to future-proof this setup for a few years, given the pain it usually is to do a wholesale swap-out like what I'm contemplating. I want to swap-out this pairing with:
a DSL modem/router to either a Netgear DM111PSP-100NAS (ADSL2+) or an older, but robust Actiontec GT-701D (or the newer -NF).
an Airport Extreme (802.11ac) to manage my Apple menagerie for fast streaming, and also to hang a poor man's network file storage off the USB port.
I'm asking for some recommendations from the community at-large so I can minimize the hassles when I do this swap-out.  Which of the two devices (the modem/router or the AE router) should I put in bridge mode? Any performance penalties one way or another, or hidden gotchas?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm back and wanted to put a coda on this thread.
First of all, many thanks to the recommendations by Tesserax and LaPastenague.  You helped allay my fears in converting over to the Time Capsule environment.
The home network is working just great.  Internal speed-ups all the way around.  TC is working great as both a file server AND a Time Machine site.  The Netgear DSL modem is the firewall and the DHCP server for my network.  As stated in earlier posts, it has superior firewall capabilities compared to the Time Capsule.  I configured the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode with my iPhone 5C, the configuration of which only took a couple of minutes.  The speed between the 802.11 ac devices, my TC and the new Mac Mini, are unbelievably fast--on the order of 150+ Mbps at a distance of 40 feet or so through several walls--beamforming really does appear to work as advertised.  That doesn't matter overall except for the Time Machine aspects, as my DSL line is a blisteringly fast 12 Mbps.
The only glitch I've had over the last 3 weeks was due to a short power outage, and the main problem was the networking with hard ethernet connection to the Time Capsule.  I had to reboot the Netgear modem, as it was in a funky state, while other devices, such as my new Mac Mini, were waiting for the modem to vend a DHCP address.  It turns out that the Apple TV had some persistence with its old DHCP-vended address, and the Mac Mini somehow received its IP address first--which conflicted with the Apple TV.  Now, I'm not sure why the wirelessly networked Mac Mini beat the Apple TV to receiving a DHCP vending first, but it did, and the address persistence of the Apple TV created a conflict on the Apple TV network connection.  Once I realized the problem, I shut down the Mac Mini and made sure all my other devices were off as well.  I then restarted the entire network, the Apple TV received its IP address first, and all was well again.  Granted, I could have disconnected the ethernet and allowed really fast wireless to the Apple TV, but it's only 4 feet away from the Time Capsule, so I might as well have the fastest pipe available for HD streaming to my large-format HD television.
The switchover was absolutely painless.  Both the modem and the Time Capsule took, all total, about 10 minutes to set up and configure.  Much easier than with Winboxes.  Other than the Apple TV IP conflict after the power outage, it's been a real delight.
I'm very happy I switched to this new network configuration.

  • Configure airport extreme with dsl modem

Need Help-I have a new DSL modem CenturyLink Q1000z, that is providing wireless to my  home.  I want to put it in bridge mode and use my aiport extreme base station(square one).  Please explain how to configure it with aiport utility 6.0.  I will need step by step as I cannot seem to find it in any forum.  thanks

I have a new DSL modem CenturyLink Q1000z, that is providing wireless to my  home.  I want to put it in bridge mode
I suppose that it is possible that another CenturyLink user might have done this and will see this post...but at the same time it is also highly unlikely that this might occur.
Your best bet may be to refer to the Support Site for Centurylink for answers:
    http://qwest.centurylink.com/internethelp/modems.html
Once you have the modem in Bridge Mode, you can configure the AirPort Extreme as follows using AirPort Utility 6.0:
Connect and Ethernet cable from the Centory Link modem to the WAN port (circle icon) on the AirPort Extreme
    Open AirPort Utility 6.0
Click on Other AirPort Base Stations in the upper left hand corner of the window
    Click on the AirPort Extreme
AirPort Utility will take a moment to analyze things and then suggest that you configure the AirPort Extreme to "Create a wireless network"
Edit the name of the Wireless Network and Base Station as you wish
    Enter a Password and Confirm
Enter your user name and password for your provider's service
Leave the Service Name area completely blank
    Set Connection to Always On
    Click Next
When you see the message that AirPort Utility has configured your AirPort Extreme, click Done

  • How can I have the external HD connected to my Airport Extreme show up on Windows 7 and 8.1?

So, I have an Airport Extreme which works flawlessly.  I have a 1 TB external HD connected to it.  On my Maccbook Pro and a windows 7 laptop, I can view the HD as "Z".  For some reason, on another Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Laptop, it is not showing up under my computer.  Any advice?  THANKS!!

You can share files with iOS devices by using filebrowser or other file app.
To play movies on the iOS device though you would need a player that is outside of itunes.. because itunes will not play from the router.. it has no media extensions.. neither does the TC which merely adds an internal disk but is otherwise identical.
So look up how to play movies with a player on the iOS.. there is several available I am sure.
    http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/apple/3512138/how-put-films-on-ipad/
BUT itunes depends on a computer running in the network.. so storing the itunes library on the AE is useless.. and will slow the network down no end. It is much better to put files where they can be accessed.. ie directly on the computer.

  • Will a superdrive connected to USB on Airport Extreme be accessable via Wifi with a Macbook Pro Retina display?

I would like to connect 2 external drives to my Airport Extreme.
    1. A standard USB 2.0 external hard drive. No issues.
    2. An Apple Superdrive.
    Will the superdrive work over Wifi with my Macbook Pro Retina display;
Or will it only work if connected to MBP via USB port on MBP?
    Thanks

  • Why is my airport extreme signal strength so weak on my macbook pro?

I live in a 4 story brownstone, next to neighbors with lots of wireless routers. My macbook pro (OS X 10.6.8) frequently is dropped from my airport extreme router. The strange thing is, the macbook receives a much stronger connection to my next door neighbor's wireless router (which is behind 2 brick walls, and down 1 floor) than it does to my airport extreme router - located 15 feet to my right with no interfering walls. In fact, I can stay solidly connected to my neighbor's router even when I'm 2 floors above him.
There are 4 other devices in my house connected to my airport extreme router. All have no problems connecting.
An ipad, which moves around from floor to floor, even outside on my front stoop.
A stationary imac located 4 inches away from the router
A stationary brother laser printer, about 10 feet to the right of the router (no interfering walls)
A stationary lexmark inket printer, about 10 feet in front of the router (behind 1 partition wall)
What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Problem solved. My router had some significant interference from a neighbours router that is no longer an issue.

  • Can airport extreme be used to back up my macbook pro files?

Am looking for a backup drive for my MacBook Pro and PC and for sharing files, particularly photos.

For PC backups there are no Windows or Apple created software that will wireless backup your computer. There are some 3rd party software that may work, you can do an internet search for "windows time machine".
Typically it would be an easy setup. The easiest setup would be with an iOS 5 device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch). If you have any troubles or if you're uncomfortable, please contact AppleCare Technical Support for free assistance. You get 90 days of complimentary phone support with new Apple hardware devices.

  • Windows 7 and Macbook Pro 17" (Series 4,1)

I am entirely unsatisfied with the Windows 7 support that the Bootcamp 3.0 drivers supplied with Mac OSX 10.6 give.
This refers to the commercial, licensed version of Windows 7 Ultimate with Mac OSX 10.6 Bootcamp drivers installed.
While I find the Windows 7 Ultimate experience on my Macbook Pro to be in general quite pleasant, it has some significant problems.
    1. Suspend / Resume does not work. When closing the lid, the OS continues running, sometimes - which leads to dangerously excessive heat build up as the fans appear to stop.
    2. When leaving the laptop lid open and the laptop unused for a period of time - the machine will simply go black. I suppose its suspended, but the only way to bring the machine out of this state is to fully power cycle the machine, leading to a Microsoft message that Windows shutdown improperly. Repeating this over a number of times leads eventually to Windows requiring a chkdsk at bootup - something takes almost 3 hours to complete on my 50gb BOOTCAMP partition.
    3. Temperature control is appalling. The laptop in general runs dangerously hot when booted into windows 7, I have even burnt my thigh as a result.
    4. My Apple Bluetooth Wireless keyboard works inconsistently and the pairing is nearly impossible to set up, requiring a bizarre process of switching bluetooth drivers.
    5. Why is the Airport basestation + bonjour an obscure download on Apple.com and not detected as needed and available in the Bootcamp driver set? Or available via Apple software update? Surely the software would know its connected wirelessley to an Apple basestation??
As an Applecare customer and licensed user of both Microsoft and Apple software, really this situation is appalling. Apple should provide a working driver set that makes the laptop fully supported NOW. Windows 7 is out as a commercial product and enterprises are already adopting it.
If anybody knows a way of solving any of these problems in Windows 7, please do let me know. And Apple - fix your drivers so they resolve these problems before your laptops start blowing up through overheating.

  • Sharing Files between Windows Vista and Macbook Pro

    Hi everyone!
I have just bought my first Macbook Pro and I love it. I am running Windows Vista on my desktop and connect wirelessly to the internet via a Netgear router. I have managed to connect to the internet with the Macbook Pro wirelessly too.
I am not sure how to set up file sharing between the PC and Macbook - can anyone point me to some SIMPLE instructions please?
    Many thanks

this is a wonderful article! thanks so much!
only one small change though. you don't really need to create another user ID to access the windows machine. i used my existing ID and it logged on fine!
but still, thanks for the rest of the article. i was totally lost without it...

  • Problem with bluetooth connection between iPhone 5s iOS 8.1.2 and MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Yosemite 10.10.1

After the upgrade to iOS 8.1.2 in iPhone 5s and OS X 10.1.1 Yosemite (MacBook Pro Mid 2012) can not connect my iPhone 5s to the MacBook, the iPhone tells me: "The MacBook is incompatible" or the message "Connection Error, Make sure the Mac is turned on and is within range" even the iPhone being close to the Mac. Otherwise with the updated iPad 2 (iOS 8.1.2) is connected via bluetooth to the MacBook without any problems, Even the iPad 2 does not detect the iPhone bluetooth.

An iPhone will not pair via Bluetooth to a computer (Mac or Windows) except for personal hotspot and then only if your cellular plan supports it. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7722
If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5458
