Connecting direct to serial port

Hi to all!!
I need to connect flash direct to serial port to send and
receive data.
I know that i have to look for some API, but all that i fund
is some other software to do the interface, but i realy need is
distribut only the flash and not the flash and other software...
There is a way to connect direct to serial com?
If yes, how it works, were can i found information to do
this??
Tanks in advance!
Regards from, Portugal

  • Connect Flash to Serial Port with Local Socket Connection

    Hey all,
    So, I am trying to connect a Flash movie to a serial port
    and have it react to the input coming in. Of course, Flash does not
    have this capability built in, so I need a workaround. I also
    program in Director, and there are easier ways to deal with this
    there, but since there hasn't been an update in years, and for
    other technical reasons, I would like to use a pure Flash program.
    I also need to take advantage of some of the new hardware
    acceleration improvements and horizontal sync issues that come with
    running the Flash player full screen. So, there are some tools out
    there that will let me stream the input from the serial port to a
    web address. I figure I could use the local address and assign a
    port number, then use Flash to create a local socket connection. I
    am having issues opening ports on my computer, and a few other
    things, but in theory, I think it should work. I know that I won't
    get all the answers here, but if anyone has done anything of the
    sort, or might know of some similar projects, it would really help.
    I am more of a Director/Flash programmer, and not so much one on
    the system level. So, opening local sockets, etc, while I am sure I
    can figure it out, is still a bit beyond me. Thanks all!
    - Bruce

    You may want to look into flash remoting, which would allow
    you to push content to the flash movie. You could then write a
    proxy between the source of your stream and flash the remoting
    server.

  • Unable to establish serial connection between 2 serial ports of same laptop

    I am trying to run "Basic 2 port serial write and read.vi" from the labview example using the 2 different com ports of same laptop. My serial cable is fine. It has passed loopback test. Also I have successfully communicated with the microcontroller(via max232) using the same cable. Still In the given example, I am not recieving character that I have written in the "string to write" window. I have confirmed the com port numbers. The cable I am using is simple 3 wire tx-rx and ground cable. I have also tried to connect two ports on two different pc's that also doesnt work. What may be the problem? I can't see any.

    Are you changing the data being sent?  As currently configured, you need to make sure the \n stays at the end of the data.  To avoid this, turn the termination character off (input on the top of the Configure Serial Port, wire a FALSE constant to it).

  • Establish a connection with the serial port on ST2510

    Hello guys,
    I have one question about connection on ST2510 with the serial port.
    Is it possible to get the following command prompt during connection on ST2510 through serial port (as described in the document 820-0015-11):
    "Enter password to access shell:"
    instead of
    "Enter password to access Service Interface (60 sec timeout):"
    ?

    stapler wrote:
    Thanks a lot,
    ...and how is it possible to get "Enter password to access shell:" instead of "Enter password to access Service Interface (60 sec timeout):" (wrong cable connection, etc.)?
    I ask about it, because one guy said me, that he tried to establish a connection according to the document 820-0015-11.
    But instead of "Enter password to access Service Interface (60 sec timeout):" he has got "Enter password to access shell:" and the default password kra16wen is incorrect.I won't indicate how to get "Enter password to access shell" because this is a special access as indicated in my previous post. However in order to get "Enter password to access Service Interface (60 sec timeout):" you need to press "S" (capital S) within 5 sec and then the password is "kra16wen".

  • How to detect if my external device is connected to the Serial port

    Hi,
    If I remove the cable from the serial port in my pc or either remove the serial cable from my external device, then when I send a request to open the serial port from my program, it basically does nothing, it just sits there.
    I want to be able to show some sort of message or any other way of indicating to the user that they should check the cable.
    below is the bit of code to open and set serial port params:

  • How to add control buttons using Java thorugh serial port?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm new to this forum.
    I have some questions on Java and serial port.
    I want to write a Java program to control my robot, through serial port. For example, when I click "Forward", the robot will go forward, and so on.
    Now I already have the buttons, so next I would like to ask how to interface the buttons with the serial port.
    I already have all the javax.comm things installed.
    below is the code for my buttons:
    import java.awt.*;
    public class ControlButtons extends java.applet.Applet
         GridLayout myLayout = new GridLayout(3, 3);
         Button button1 = new Button(" ");
         Button buttonForward = new Button("Forward");
         Button button2 = new Button(" ");
         Button buttonLeft = new Button("Left");
         Button buttonStop = new Button("Stop");
         Button buttonRight = new Button("Right");
         Button button3 = new Button(" ");
         Button buttonReverse = new Button("Reverse");
         Button button4 = new Button(" ");
         public void init()
              setLayout(myLayout);
              add(button1);
              button1.setVisible(false);
              add(buttonForward);
              add(button2);
              button2.setVisible(false);
              add(buttonLeft);
              add(buttonStop);
              add(buttonRight);
              add(button3);
              button3.setVisible(false);
              add(buttonReverse);
              add(button4);
              button4.setVisible(false);
    }Now I would like to ask for direction on how to add in the code to make it work with serial port.
    Thanks

    The plan is, I have a robot device connected to the serial port.We don't know anything about that device. We don't know how to control it. We don't know what you have to write to the device to make it do anything. Only you know what.
    For example, when I click "Forward", the robot will go forward, and so on.So what do you have to send to make it do that? and same for the other buttons.
    Next, you need to work out from the javax.comm API how to open the serial port and send data to it. This is a standard exercise in learning a new API. You must be able to do this. Again and again.
    But the program is useless. The button can be clicked, but didn't do anything.Because (a) they have no ActionListeners and (b) there is no code to send anything to the serial port.
    You have to write all that. So you also have to look up ActionListener in the Java API and how to attach it to a button. You can do that. We all do that kind of thing every day.
    So next I would like to ask how to interface the buttons with the serial port.You've been asking nothing else since you started, but you've also only done enough investigation of your own to create the buttons. That's only the start.
    The problem is what method and command should I use to make those buttons actually functioning.See above. You've been told part of it several times. The rest only you can answer, because it's your robot.

  • Fieldpoint serial port communication?

    Hi,
      I am a researcher from School of Biotechnology, Dublin City University, Ireland. I have been using Labview programming (version 8.2) for bioprocess monitor and control. I am using Fieldpoint (FP2010) module for data acquistion and control.  I've connected analog outputs from various controllers to appropriate channels and found data acquistion working fine using respective VI's. We have few instrument outputs which are need to be connected through serial interface on filedpoint's serial port. We are using  a multiplexer (B & B electronics) for channeling all serial outputs (of instruments) to serial port of Filedpoint. VI's developed for all serial interface of multiplexer ports  found working (data logging ok!) , when it is connected directly to COM1 port of PC. But when multiplexer serial interface is connected to serial port of Fieldpoint, the data values fails to log on the PC. Ethernet cable is used for interfacing filedpoint with PC. It seems the PC recognises COM1 port for serial interface but not serial port of Field point.
    We have a driver software for multiplexer, where we already configured all serial input and output ports as required. How to configure PC to serial port present in Filedpoint instead of it using COM1?
    I tried playing with MAX configuration as wells device manager of PC, but system couldn't recognise serial port of filed point.
    kindly provide me a solution.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    There is a software component that normaly would provide the feature you are looking for. It is the VISA Server. Unfortunately this component is not installable by default on cFP 20x0 controllers because of memory limitations.
    Your controller has enough memory, so you could try  to install the Server by hacking the driver installation configuration file for the NI-VISA server. Keep in mind that this is not an official feature and the usability could be limited.
    Go to your   \\Program Files\National Instruments\RT Images\NI-VISA Server\4.x    folder and open the "install_81xx.cdf" file with your wordpad.
    Add the bold line to the file as shown below:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <?CDF VERSION="1.1"?>
    <SOFTPKG NAME="{E62A7BA2-8ED9-4C4A-AFA1-0DE33A188D61}" VERSION="4.4" TYPE="VISIBLE">
        <TITLE>NI-VISA Server</TITLE>
Remote VISA Server -- Shares VISA resources over the network.
        <IMPLEMENTATION>
            <DEVICECLASS VALUE="PXI"/>
            <DEVICECLASS VALUE="Desktop"/>
            <PROCESSOR VALUE="7002"/>
            <PROCESSOR VALUE="7063"/>
            <PROCESSOR VALUE="7151"/>
            <PROCESSOR VALUE="7175"/>
            <PROCESSOR VALUE="E002"/>
            <PROCESSOR VALUE="E001"/>
    Save and close the file and close and reopen MAX. Go to your remote target and open the software installation tool. Now you should have the VISA server as an option for installation.
    After installing it and reboot, go back to your remote target in max and go to Software/NI-VISA 4.x and choose VISA Options at the right page. Go to Aliaes and choose "ADD Alias".
    Now enter ASRL1::INSTR into "Ressource Name" and "COM4" as Alias name for example. Now go to VISA Server /Security and add a * to allow access for every Host connected to your target.
    Save your settings and change to MySystem/Software/NI-VISA 4.x and go to VISA Options at the right page. Go to Aliaes and choose "ADD Alias".Now enter visa://your remote IP address/ASRL1::INSTR into "Ressource Name" and "COM4" as Alias name for example. Save your settings.
    Now you should be able to access your remote COM4 interface from your HOST, by using the COM4 alias within the VISA ressource control.

  • Reading/writing to serial port w/ VISA in Labview

    I'm writing a Labview program to control and to read data from a Varian vacuum pump controller. It is connected to the serial port in my computer, and I have been trying to open a VISA session to communicate with the instrument. So far, however, the computer cannot see the instrument--I get the same error messages reading and writing to the instrument as I do to an empty serial port. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem might be? Thank you.

    There are a lot of possiblities. Is the cable correct? You probably need a crossover cable (TX and RX) swapped. You also need to check and make sure the serial ports on both ends are set the same (i.e. baud rate, handshaking, stop bits, etc.). Make sure that the port is enabled. I've seen people try to use a comm port only to find that a modem card installation caused the port to be disabled. You could also try using hyperterminal to talk to the instrument. If you can communicate there, you can eliminate any hardware problem.

  • Tecra A11 - Serial port not working

    I have a Tecra A11 running windows 7 professional (32 bit).
    My serial port does not appear to be operating as I am no longer able to connect to industrial automation PLC's which require connection to the serial port for programming.
    Some of the software I am using is RSLinx, Easysoft and the like.
    Any assistance with this matter will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello
    I assume you need the notebook at your company and normally in every company there is a local IT-Support that you can ask all questions if you have any problems.
    So I would recommend contacting an administrator. Usually the guys know how to connect the computers to all important industrial components/computers and how to configure the port for that.

  • URGENT: Capturing data through serial port

    Hi,
    My problem is with the use of javax.comm API. I have an RFID tag reader connected to
    the serial port. It is a handheld reader and reads tags when its trigger is pulled. The
    data that is read is sent to the serial port. This is what I want to capture.
    I tried to test the reading operation by running the SimpleRead sample. What I see is
    that I pull the trigger once to read 1 tag, but that generates 3 DATA_AVAILABLE events.
    The tag ID that is read is 16 bytes, preceded by a 3 byte AIM Identifier (that declares
    the following data was read from an RFID tag, and not a barcode which has different
    AIM Identifiers for the different symbologies - but I digress.) By inserting some println's,
    I was able to see that the 19 bytes of data are read 8 bytes at a time. The first 8 bytes
    are read on the first DATA_AVAILABLE event, the next 8 are read on the second event
    and the last 3 bytes are read on the 3rd DATA_AVAILABLE event.
    This is strange & not good for me. How can my application know that the data read in
    these 3 separate DATA_AVAILABLE events is to be concatenated to form a single
    tag ID? Why is the single trigger-pull & tag read operation broken up into chunks of
    8 bytes? Is there some configuration setting that will give me the behavior I want?
    (I cannot rely on the length of the tag ID being 16 bytes always, because the same
    reader will also be reading barcodes where the data may have varying length)
    Thanks for any help. This is really urgent.
    - Ajoy

    please use the [ code ]and [code ] tags for code.
    I don't think you have a problem with the code, it's more like understanding how to make it work.
    to make the read method return.You do not have a read() method.
    The code is behaving as it should.
    You need to use the SimpleRead class as a thread, add and remove the Serial port listener as needed.
    You read all data available, then send it to a method to parse the buffer.
    You can count how much data was read so you know how much to parse.
    I never used receive threshhold.
    Here is example (sample)of my serial port reader
    //SerialIO
       public void serialEvent(SerialPortEvent event) {
            switch(event.getEventType()) {
                  case SerialPortEvent.OUTPUT_BUFFER_EMPTY:
                break;
            case SerialPortEvent.DATA_AVAILABLE:
                this.dataManager.readData();
    //DataManager
    public void readData() {
         String str;
         int     bytes = 0;
         long endTime, now;
         try {
              while (this.owner.isComPortOpen
                   && (SerialIO.inStream.available() > 0)) {
                   bytes = SerilIO.inStream.read(this.buffer);
                   if (bytes > 0) {
                   if (bytes > this.buffer.length) {
                        System.out.println( ": Input buffer overflow!");
         **Here is where you parse your buffer
                   sendDataToParser(bytes, buffer);

    I want to communicate with a microcontroller connected to the serial port of my computer.
    *I am using the following:
    Windows 98 operating system
    Tomcat web server 4.1
    *The directory structure is as given:
    Tomcat 4.1/webapps/myjsp/web-inf/classes/remoteservlets.
    I have placed my jsp files in my jsp folder and classfiles in remote servlets folder.
    **my java program has compiled correctly.**
    ** my simple java application which accesses the serial port works fine.***
    *when I start tomcat I am able to access the sevlet as the servlet responds with the button name i have pressed.
    **** I have also tried the following
    Copied file comm.jar in <JAVA_HOME>\jre\lib\ext
    Copied file javax.comm.properties in <JAVA_HOME>\jre\lib
    Copied file win32com.dll in <JAVA_HOME>\lib and also in c:\windows\system32 and c:\windows\system
    ***************which helped me do away with errors.
    still I don't get any output. I dont get any errors either.
    PLEASE HELP. URGENT. i am at my wits end.
    Thank you.

    Servlet is the one which runs in the server side...if u want to comunicate with the serial port of the server in which ur servlet is running can be done but making use of Communication api available....
    U can download the Api from http://java.sun.com/products/javacomm/index.jsp
    There are three levels of classes in the Java communications API:
    High-level classes like CommPortIdentifier and CommPort manage access and ownership of communication ports.
    Low-level classes like SerialPort and ParallelPort provide an interface to physical communications ports. The current release of the Java communications API enables access to serial (RS-232) and parallel (IEEE 1284) ports.
    Driver-level classes provide an interface between the low-level classes and the underlying operating system. Driver-level classes are part of the implementation but not the Java communications API. They should not be used by application programmers.
