Connecting Powerbook to Netgear Router using WEP

I am trying to set up a wireless network in my house using WEP Password protection. I have Netgear wireless router (WGR614 v5) that supports both WEP and WPA protection, but I am trying to add my dad's laptop to the network with a Netgear WG511 v1 network card, which only supports WEP protection. My PB connected fine when I had it set up with WPA, but since I switched to WEP, the Powerbook says "There was an error joining the AirPort network...". I also have one windows desktop wired to the router, as well as my PB, right now. Any suggestions

Here are a few more methods of solving this problem:
- try entering the same 13-character alphanumeric passphrase on both the Netgear router and the Mac
- try entering the same 26-digit hexadecimal passphrase on both the Netgear router and the Mac
Make sure the Netgear router is running the latest available firmware version available from Netgear's web site.

  • I cannot get my Apple TV to connect to my Netgear router. I can get it to connect if I disable the security for the password but once I enable it it won't connect.

I have an issue with connecting to my Netgear router. I have tried a lot of different options on my router but the only way I can get it to connect is to disable my security password and I don't want to leave my network exposed without a password. I have tried resetting, updating my software and restarting the Apple TV. I just bought this last week and haven't gotten to use it yet.

then it throws and error message.
    What is the error message?

  • Just got a new IPOD Touch and it wont connect to our Wifi home network with a Belken N Router. Our router uses WEP 64 bit security, but had a "blank" password field, which the IPOD did not like. Changing to a 6 char numeric PW didnt help either.

OS is whatever OS ships with current IPOD Touch
I cannot understand why the APPLE engineers have designed this product so that it has SO MANY WIFI problems.  This is supposed to be an easy-to-use product.  We've had no problems connecting our new laptop, our ROKU box, etc, but it seems impossible to get the IPOD touch to work.  NOTHING LIKE SPENDING XMAS MORNING DOING APPLE TECH SUPPORT TROUBLESHOOTING TO LEAVE YOU IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT!!!  Argh!
In fact, the only way we have been able to get this expensive brand new IPOD to work on our home network is to DISABLE SECURITY in the router settings.  THIS IS ANYTHING BUT A GOOD IDEA.
DON"T KNOW WHY BUT MANY OTHER USERS ARE REPORTING THE SAME KIND OF PROBLEM SO APPLE ENGINEERING NEEDS TO GET BUSY AND FIX THIS PROBLEM SO THAT NEW USERS CAN CONNECT TO THE INTERNET WITHOUT HAVING TO BE TRAINED ROUTER ENGINEERS TO DO IT!!!!
Ok, sorry for the rant, but surely those of you who are experiencing this share my frustration.  This is not why I bought an APPLE product.
IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY THAT APPLE WILL NOT ALLOW A WIFI PASSWORD with more than one identical alphanumeric character?  Any ideas?  We also tried eliminating the 40 MHZ setting under Bandwidth settings in the router settings for our router, but it made no difference.  The router has the latest firmware, too.  Running out of ideas, and am ready to box this unit up and send it back!

Thanks, Bob!  You are correct.  And, we learned this as we spoke with APPLE TECH SUPPORT by phone on Christmas day (800-APL-CARE).  One of their reps spent the time to help us troubleshoot this, but the boiled down conclusion is your answer, and to repeat for the benefit of others, here is what worked:
    1. With our Belkin router set to "out-of-the-box" WEP 64 bit security, we could not get wireless access of any kind.  Only with the Security Mode set to DISABLED, could we gain access.
    2. Changing the router's security mode setting to "WPA/WPA-2...." and entering a new min. 8 char passphrase, and then entering that same passphrase into the IPOD Touch, and restarting the router, did the trick!
Based on this, and some info found in another posting, I can only conclude that the IPODs and IPHONES do not support WEP security mode in many generic routers used by thousands of consumers.  Hopefully, those same consumers can figure out how to change their wireless router setttings to WPA/WPA-2 security mode and ALSO get all their other wireless devices (PCs, laptops, WII boxes, ROKU boxes) all reconfigured to WPA mode, too.
I THINK THE BOTTOM LINE HERE IS THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE THAT APPLE NEEDS TO ADDRESS WITH WEP COMPATIBILITY and it may also be the case that MOST CONSUMERS ARE USING WEP 64 BIT security on their home wireless routers?
In any case, it's working now, so anyone who is having problems should try changing to WPA mode and post back here if it worked for them!

  • Help- can't connect airport to Netgear router?

I posted yesterday then thought I had solved the problem but I hadn't so here goes again:
I've never used Airport before, so i'm green
I have a G4 sawtooth tower connected to a Netgear wireless router MR814v2.
I don't think I have an airport card in the tower unless it came as orig equipment.
Anyway 2 G4's ( both OS 10.3.9) are connected to the router by ethernet cable and a PC laptop has a Netgear wireless card that also connects it.
The 2 G4's share internet, file sharing and printer access - no problem.
The PC laptop shares internet, but I've been unable to figure out how to get it to share printer or files - not too big a deal -
Now I just bought a 1.5GHz Powerbook that has Airport Extreme in it (running Tiger) (second hand no apple care anymore). I hit the little icon in the upper left corner for airport, and it shows my Network - Good.
But when I click on the network it asks for a WEP Password - I have no idea what Password to use.
I've tried everything connected to my router that I can think of, everything related to adminstrative passwords and I always get - "error connecting to network" ( or something like that)
Do have to set something else up, create a password, or is it another problem?
I found on the netgear website that I needed to download a firmware update for the router to make it work with airport extreme.
OK I did that, still doesn't work.
I can connect fine to my neighbors linksys network that doesnot require a password.
Also do I need to set up another email address for this machine?
I can't log into the same email address on 2 machines at the same time can I?

Open the Netgear configuration page. Go to the wireless settings. On my Netgear, the encryption password is visible.
If the password isn't visible on yours, simply change the password to something new.
Also do I need to set up another email address for this machine?
    No
I can't log into the same email address on 2 machines at the same time can I?
Sure. If you are using an IMAP account and have the settings to leave the messages on the server everything will work well. If you are using a POP account it can become confusing because the first one to check mail will get messages and remove them from the server. So one may see messages that the other doesn't.

  • Why can't I connect to my NETGEAR router all of a sudden?

This one is baffling me. So I have a wireless network set up in my apartment using a Netgear router. I've had it up and running for months without any problems. As of last night, my Macbook Pro has been unable to connect to it. It can recognize it along with all the other networks in the area but when I try to join it and enter my password, it says the password is invalid. Before, I never even had to enter a password other than the time I set it up. My xbox, ipod, etc. can still connect to the network just fine using the same password. I switched to Windows on my Macbook and was still able to connect on that side, and I could see that my password was still the same as I remembered. For whatever reason, I cannot connect to the router from the Mac side, even with the correct password, without it telling me the password is invalid and kicking me out. I've tried resetting the router, resetting the computer multiple times, changing the network's name and password, and everything else I can think of. I'm all out of ideas. Any thoughts? Thank you!

  • Cannot automatically connect to my Netgear Router

    Hi,
When I turn on my Mac Book Air (2011) it will not automatically connect to my Netgear WNDR3400 on either the 2.4ghz or 5ghz bandwidth.   When I over at a friends house I able to connect automatically to a linksys or cisco router.   Do you know what the issue could be?   Thank you.

Someone from the Netgear forum solved my issue.   My mac air was trying to use WPA instead of WPA2.   Once I removed the saved network and added it back it works great.

  • Hp pavilion d4790y windows vista cannot connect to internet wirelessly unless using WEP

I have a HP Pavilion d4790y with Windows Vista 32 bit home premium.  I can connect to my ISP router wirelessly using the HP internal network adapter, but the connection from the router to the internet does not work unless I downgrade the router security to WEP.  If I connect to the router with a wired connection, I can connect to the internet no problem even with WPA2.  I have done all the recomended troubleshooting steps like resetting the router, checking for network adapter driver update, uninstall/reinstall network adapter driver, release and renew the ip config, etc.  Suggesions?  Is there a more recent driver that is not being recognized during the update search process?

    Hi,
This is a hardware thing and the wireless card does not support this. Changing the wireless card may be the way to go.
    Hope this helps.

  • IChat AV not working when connecting wirelessly thru Netgear router

Ok, I have read nearly EVERY forum out there about this issue, and I have tried nearly everything. I even called Apple. Noone can seem to figure out what the deal is.
I have a Netgear WGR614 v5, and it is connected to a modem that I got from RoadRunner (Time Warner Cable).
My cousin, who has a Mac identical to mine, is set up in the same fashion with a Netgear router.
Neither of us can get a video connection using iChat. When we click the Accept button, it says "Connecting to ...." and then we both get an error that basically says there was a "communication error".
I was informed of an Apple test address that I could test it with. AIM username is appleu3test03. I added it to my iChat buddy list, and clicked on the camera icon, and voila! It connected and I get an iPhone video (which is what is supposed to happen)
So, what EXACTLY is that supposed to tell me???? The Apple test site says that means there is no problem with my connection, but that the issue is on my end somewhere....but I don't understand how that can be.
Anyway, I don't have ANY firewalls on, and it works when I am connected directly with an Ethernet cable.
    PLEASE!!! HELP!!
    Thanks

  • Why won't my iPad connect to my Netgear router?

Good evening.  Until yesterday, I had a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and life was good and devices connected.  Then, after 10 years of service, that guy died.  Well, now I have this Netgear WNR2000v3 router.  I got it set up last night.  My MacBook Pro connects, my Kindle connects, my Android phone connects, and even my ******** "smart" TV connects.  My iPad, however, won't connect at all.  Steps I've taken:
    - The iPad's MAC address is definitely in the list of allowed addresses on the router.
    - The router's firmware is definitely up-to-date.
    - The iPad definitely connects to other networks (like the one at work).
    - I've powered the router and iPad on and off.
    - I've reset the network settings to defaults.
I've also read through all of http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398 and I don't think I missed anything.
Here are the wireless settings on my router:
    - SSID broadcast enabled.
    - Channel: auto.
    - Mode: up to 300 Mbps.
    - Security:WPA2-PSK [AES].
    - Fragmentation length: 2346.
    - CTS/RTS threshold: 2347.
    - Preamble mode: automatic.
    - WPS settings:
        - Disable router's pin is not checked.
        - Keep existing wireless settings is checked.
        - I don't use this, however.  I attach all of my other devices without it.
    - Wireless card access list (MAC filter):
        - On and the iPad's MAC address is there.
Is there anything else?  Is there some known issue and known fix?  I see a few other people have asked about the same router on the web, but there aren't any useful answers that I haven't tried.
    Thanks in advance!
    Jeremy

I had.  Several times.  However, I just solved it.  It's really quite embarrassing.  I wish I could erase this thread from history   Although I checked and re-checked and re-re-checked what I typed in the MAC filter for the iPad, I still buggered one character.  F is not the same as E and just one incorrect character is all it takes to throw off the MAC filter.  Correct address entered, iPad is on the network.  I am going to go quit IT work now.  Thanks all!

  • My Ipod Touch won't connect to belkin 54g router with wep password 128 bit

Well basically, I try to connect to my router it is belkin 54g, I have a 128 bit password WEP security. When I put the password in correctly, it says that it's " Unable to connect ".
However, when I only put in the first 10 hex of my password it says connected, but when I go on facebook or safari it says " No Internet Connection".
Before you refer me to any solutions these are some of the things that I have tried but didn't work:
Putting a $ sign in front of the password
    Restarting my router
Turning off security and then put back on ( When i turned it off it connected but when I turned it back on it wudnt connect)
Changing it to WPA (still doesnt work)
I have noticed that on my router, it keeps blocking me from connecting to it. All of the comptuers can connect to my router as normal however, my ipod touch can't.
It's really annoying because you can't even do half of the things without being able to connect to internet.
    Please help me

are other things still connecting to the wifi without a problem?
Have you tried resetting network settings, then unplugging modem and router from power for 40 seconds then plugging back in letting the lights stabilize and Then recconecting with the ipod>?

  • I have a Comcast Modem which is connected to a Netgear Router for my home network. I just bought the Apple Time Capsule. Do I simply take the Netgear Router offline and substitute the Time Capsule. If so does this require a new Network name and security?

The router and modem are connected t oa PC but all the other computers on the network are Apple.

You should be able to substitute the TC for the netgear.. although you might find the wireless range is somewhat less.
Power down both the netgear and the cable modem.. plus all the clients.. leave the modem off for 5min at least.. maybe 15min..
Put the TC in place of the Netgear.. you do not need to change the name, although PC will work better if you keep everything SMB compatible.. that means both TC name and wireless names, short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
Power up the modem.. wait 2min then power up the TC, then the rest of the clients.. check in airport utility to make sure the TC got public iP on  the wan interface.

  • IPad2 has slower wireless connection than laptop (netgear router)

I have done numerous speed tests that show my laptop at 5meg and ipad2 always below 1meg. All the similar posts i have read suggest turning off qos on the router but mine doesnt even have that option. Its a netgear 150 and brand new. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me mad!! Thanks

Have you powered off everything and power up again?  Power off printer and router.  Power on router and wait 2 mins.  Power up printer and see if it connects to your SSID.

  • TS1398 have been connected to my wireless network using a netgear sky broadband router succesfully for a few weeks, suddenly can't connect, network is showing but no signal - all other wireless gadgets are connected just fine - including iphone - any idea

my ipad 4 has been connected to my wireless network using a netgear sky broadband router succesfully for a few weeks, suddenly can't connect, network is showing but no signal - all other wireless gadgets are connected just fine - including iphone - any ideas?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • I have a netgear router that I am trying to hook up to my emac and I keep on getting connection errors messages on the emac. why?

I recently received an eMac as a gift from a friend. I am having some problems setting it up. First, for some reason, I cannot get my osX disks to install onto my eMac. the eMac tells me the install disk is not bootable. Why would that be? So, I have os 9.2 installed on the eMac. I have the eMac connected to a netgear router, and when I set up all the ip settings in the eMac, I get connection errors. I do not know why. I can easily hook up any windows computer to a router, but when I try to connect an Apple Computer to a router or an ethernet modem, I always get connection errors. Why? What am I doing wrong? In the Apple System Profiler, the eMac tells me that it cannot identify the router. Why would that be? Do I need a special eMac driver for my netgear router? I have tried to find such a driver, but am having no success. I need help! Can someone please help me? I really want to use this eMac! But if I cannot get it set up for the internet, it is going into the junkyard!  I really don't want that!

Encryption wouldn't matter except for Wifi.

  • How to connect iPhone 5 to Netgear router

After spening several hours on the phone with an Apple rep trying to figure out why my new iPhone 5 would not connect to my Netgear router. I decided to google Netgear router and iPhone. I stumbled on this discussion from defiantmacho dated August 2008 -
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1686716?start=0&tstart=0.
I followed this instructions and my iPhone connected within min. I know that it's the long way around the issue but hey it works. If I would have found this on Thursday, I would have save myself so much time. The Apple Support team need to be made aware of these work around instructions.

Ok guys. This is the simple way i used to connect my iPhone to my Netgear router. Netgear can be a pain in the butt!, You should have followed the router's installation instructions to the letter first. Usually you will have to turn your modem and router off, then connect the ethernet cable from the modem (out) to the router (in), and then turn the router on first. Then, turn the modem on a few seconds later. Your computer should then be connected from the router (not the modem) via ethernet as well. After all is done, open your browser and type the address given by your router's instructions (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2), then login. If none of it works, use a pen to reset the Netgear router and repeat everything I mentioned above.
THEN, after all that is set:
    1. In your iPhone, go to Settings>General>About. Then, scroll down to "Wi-Fi Address". This is your MAC address. This you will need in order to authorize your phone in your Netgear page (which usually looks something like XXX.XXX.X.X (where "X" are numbers)). I already gave the addresses above.
    2. Log in to you Netgear page (remember "admin" as generic username and "password" or "1234" as the generic password?. I am assuming you read the router's instructions, right?. I mean, come on, it's only a double sided page!
    3. On the blue left panel of the screen that comes up after user and password entry, click on "Wireless Settings". A new page comes up.
    4. Check mark both boxes and click on "Setup Access List".
    5. Check mark "Turn Access control On", then click on "Add" to enter the require info needed for your phone to gain access to your network.
    6. On "Device Name" I entered "iPhone". This name is irrelevant, so enter whatever name you wish, but keep it simple.
    7. Now, on "Mac Address" (the single most important info here) enter the number you obtained in Step 1. Make sure you enter it with the colons (:), although I found out it can be entered without them as well and the page formats it for you .
    8. Add and apply, and wait for the blue bar at the top of the screen to do its thing. It will take only a few seconds to update the network.

You can use Photo Transfer App to transfer photos from iPhone to iPad or vice versa using Bluetooth or WiFi
