Connecting to a Wondows Server Network from Home

Hello All,
I am new to MAC (OSx)and this is the first time I will be connecting my new iMAC from home to my work network (currently accessing by Windows XP). My company uses Checkpoint Secure Client in terms of connecting and authenticating on my work network and I have been successful in getting this installed and connected. Unfortunately I cannot seem to connect to my shared folders and files. I also notice that I cannot ping the work file server. Is there a specific way to setup file sharing on the work network in order for the iMAC to see shared files or am I still missing something on my iMAC setup.
I realise that this could be any number of things but any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paul:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
You are right - there are a number of things that would affect your connectivity!
This is rather bland advice, but the first step I would take would be to contact your company IT people for help. There could be firewall settings (among other things) that may be a problem. When I was working, I had a similar problem (very different configuration from yours). In my own case, I would have never connected without my organization IT people helping me (a lot).

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

In addition to RyanJC's comments, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can store up to five different http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108081 configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • Newbie question. Trying to connect to my work network from home?

Hi, I need to be able to monitor my work computers from home. Now I have a static IP at work and a dynamic at home. I have Ard3 installed on my laptop which I take to work and I also use it at home ( hopefull to check on renderings at work). When I am at work on the local network I can monitor all the work computers but when I go home I can't. I know that I have to do some configuring but I am not sure what I need to configure. Now the router at work and home are the same model a D-link DI-524. Can anyone help I need to monitor at least but but would also need to monitor 4 others.
    Thanks
    Anron

I have the Ports 5900 and 3283 fowarding to work computer A and at home I have the Ports forwarded to my laptop. No we have a static ip at work which comes from the the modem into the Dlink Di-524 router. No I we do not use a NAT. At work the flow goes from the modem to the router to a switch to the work Computer A. At home it goes from the modem to the router to a switch to the laptop.
    I hope this helps.

  • Accessing network from home via static IP

Hello. I have a small network at the company that I own. We are a Mac network running Tiger on most machines. The server is 10.3. We just moved offices and have a new internet/DSL provider. At my old office, we had a static IP configured that allowed me to log in from home via the IP address. Now that we moved, I can't figure out how to get it set up to allow access through the new IP address. I have the modem set with a static IP for the WAN settings. Is there something I need to do on the server as well? I know just enough to be dangerous, but I'm not at all a network/IT expert. Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Greg

I think your best bet would be to configure the VPN server that way all your access would be sent over an encrypted network connection to your office network.
Basically what that means is no one would be able to easily sniff out sensitive info from you. The VPN server is pretty easy to setup and works great for me. I access my office network from my home network to fix problems in the middle of the night so I don't have to drive into work.
If you want more info or possibly some help setting it up, feel free to e-mail me at: japruim AT raoset DoT com (Make it a normal email and it will work just fine) Stupid spam bots

  • Work Server access from home.

I just started a new job and its my first time using a mac.
My employer has accounts set up with lion server in the office. they have given me a MacBook Pro. However i am unable to access my network account from home, unlike my previous job we used windows server and it had offline mode. and when i went into the office it all updated and synced together.
Can i suggest anything to my employer, or am I doing something wrong?
    Cheers
    Garrett

Windows has a built-in Sync capability which allows you to define a network folder as being available off-line i.e. when you are not in the office. As you say, when you are back in the office it will then 'sync' to the network folder and make any changes needed.
Mac OS X does not have built-in a similar feature but their are third-party utilities to do this. However before I get in to that, it is also possible to work in a different way.
Both Windows and Mac OS X allow setting things up so you can connect to the server remotely e.g. when at home, and in this case you would then be working 'on-line', with this approach no syncing would be needed as you would always be working with the real network folder. To do this you need a VPN server at the office, and you need to have a VPN client configured on your Mac, as Ralph says, for this approach you need to speak to your IT department.
Now getting back to the option of doing a similar syncing approach on a Mac. I have previously used a product called ChronoSync to do this on a Mac. Details can be found here -
    http://econtechnologies.com/pages/cs/chrono_overview.html
This can be configured in numerous ways, but the way I used it and the way I suspect would be best for you is to have ChronoSync automatically do a sync between a folder on your laptop and the matching folder on your network server when you login to that server. So when you go back in to the office and login to the server it would then automatically trigger and do a sync.
ChronoSync is not free so you will have to again speak to your IT staff or manager about getting it purchased. It does not need any special setup on the server end.

  • Want to have My iPod Touch to be connected to a WiFi while away From Home

While at Home I am connected to my WiFi through my computer system but when I am away from home there isn't very much WiFi Hot spots in my area except when I am in a Star bucks or in a business that says that they have "Free" WiFi. I have a few WiFi iPod Touch Apps that are able to locate Free WiFi Hot Spots but when I go and try to use them when I am away from home I am not able to use it at all.
Is there a way that I can have my iPod Touch to be set up where I can be connect to any WiFis when I am away from Home? or have my iPod Touch to be able to search for any WiFis in my area?
Note: I have a MobileMe Account and I have a email account with my local Isp which is a Pop account.

I'll add another positive review about the MiFi device and its use with a Touch. I've had this for about 2 months, and it works very well. And I'll disagree with the poster who said "get an iPhone".
The MiFi has several advantages over the iPhone -- First, it's a mobile hotspot that can provide WiFi for up to 5 devices simultaneously (the iPhone can't do that, even once AT&T enables tethering); Second, the MiFi allows use of a network other than AT&T (which many users may appreciate)...aside from Verizon, Sprint sells a version that works on its network; Finally, the price of the MiFi and its usage plan may well end up being less expensive than an iPhone.
It's not cheap, but then again, neither is an iPhone and its usage plan. I spend nearly $60/month on the expensive MiFi plan, but can switch down (and then back up) to the lower-priced $40/month plan if I don't need the full 5gb a month that the higher plan provides.
Sure, you don't get a telephone with the Touch + MiFi solution (although Skype works well if you add a microphone to your Touch), but not everyone wants/needs a phone...and for those who want primarily data/WiFi/Web, the MiFi with a Touch will give an iPhone a real run for its money.
I'll also add that the original poster may just need access to more hotspots - i.e., other than those that advertise "free" WiFi. If that's the case, she might consider something like a Boingo membership which will get her online in many places...including just about every McDonalds in the US.

  • MB Pro tries to connect to Time Capsule when away from home network resulting in annoying error message - how do I fix this?

I have a 13" MB Pro late 2011 model running Mountain Lion with 2.5 ghz and 8 GB ram. I have a TC setup at home as wireless network and my phones, ipads, PCs, and MB Pro all connect to it with no problem. The problem is when I leave home and connect to another wireless network my MB Pro tries to connect to the TC about every 15 seconds and a message pops up saying it could not connect to the server "Time Capsule" and it forces me to click ok. As you can imagine, clicking ok every 15 seconds makes it impossible to use the computer. I have tried turning off time machine but it makes no difference.
I have tried to read other posts and could not find the answer. Only reason I state this is because I once asked a question and there was another post out there and several got mad at me. I'm just trying to figure this out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Mountain Lion Server: Network users Home directory mount problems

I am having several problems with my server after a latest name change of the server via Server.app. (A first name change made problems, after that I have been trying to repair, changing the name a few times more. With latest name change, I also changed the server name itself from Foo to Bar while changing domain name from domain.com to bar.domain.com after which I repaired DNS so it covers the whole domain.com domain).
The users in the Network directory think their home directory is on afp://domain.com/Users, but the server is now called bar.domain.com. /Network/Servers/bar.domain.com does not exist on the server. Client machines (with mobile home directories) are now able to sync, because I added an A record for domain.com to DNS (not  nice, but does the job, or more specifically that job). Also on the clients, I can go to a SHARED folder in Finder with the name Bar and go to Users and see al the home directories there. But:
    bash-3.2# ls -l /Network/Servers/
    total 4
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 domain.com
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 foo.domain.com
    bash-3.2# ls -l /Network/Servers/*
    /Network/Servers/domain.com:
    total 2
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 Users
    /Network/Servers/foo.domain.com:
    total 2
    dr-xr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  1 Apr 14 11:14 Users
    bash-3.2# ls -l /Network/Servers/*/Users
    /Network/Servers/domain.com/Users:
    ls: Users: Input/output error
    /Network/Servers/foo.domain.com/Users:
    ls: Users: Input/output error
So, on the server looking for folder ~user does not work. It wants to  go to afp://domain.com/Users/user but that is unreachable.
Any tips on what I can do except do a clean rebuild of the server (again)?
(One of the obvious problems is that the Realm of OD is still called foo.domain.com, the origin of my problems has been that the first name change from foo.domain.com to domain.com (ill-advised, I know) failed — partly).
What I'd like to know is:
    - where is it determined which servers end up in /Network/Servers?

    Som additional info:
Other machines can mount afp://foo.domain.com/, afp://domain.com/ and afp://bar.domain.com/, but the server itself cannot mount them via Finder.

  • Trying to connect IMac to Lion server (network account)

    Hello,
I have been trying to get this to work for a few weeks now.  I have 2 Imacs and a Macbook, i am trying to login to a network account.  I did the step by step to set up my server.  I can screen share and see all the shared folders.  I have a network user in the work group, and when i go to users on my macbook, and say join the server, i get host not found, but the server is active.
My network is a DSL modem ( in bridge mode), then to a time capsule, that is hard wired to my server and one Imac, everthing else is wireless.  My time capsule hands out the Ip's, and a DNS server is running on my lion server.
Am I having a DNS problem, I am not sure what DNS has to go where starting with the time capsule.  Should i have my time capsule just server one IP to my lion server and have the server hand out the other IP's over DHCP?
My goal is to have network user account on my server, and no matter what computer you use, you can get the same information.  Then set up mobile account for when my macbook is not on the network.
I setup profile manager, and tried to push my settings to my account, but it also fails every time.
I tried to follow apple's doc's on this but I have luck with some things, and now with others.
I am running lion server on a mac mini server.
    Thank you,
         Justin

    HI,
    my experience is as follows:
    1. You have to setup a home folder for network/mobile users with Server.app
    2. Create a group for network users with the workgroupmanagement.app from serveradmin tools
    3. Create users with  correct settings under "preferences" in workgroupmanagement.app, especially "rules"
    4. Put the users in the group
    4. Set the appropriate permissions to the home folder and share it over the network with server.app
After playing around I could login from a MacBook Pro and synchronize the users library and complete home folder. After testing and restarting the machines (Lion Server is on a Mac Mini) I could relogin with the network/mobile user.
My problem actually is, that I could not login from any other Mac. Everytime the system told me, that there is a fault with login.
Before I want to login with the network/moblle user on another MacBook i logout the user form the MacBook Pro.
    No luck :-(
I test it with other users with same settings.
    No luck :-(
I integrate the MacBooks in the Computer settings in the workgroupmanagement.app.
    No luck :-(
I hope this thread give answers the next days, because I need a working synchronize and account management solution for different users and machines :-)
    Cheers
    Ishan

  • I'm trying to connect to a VPN (Buffalo Technology) from home over Airport Extreme (5th Generation)

    Hi all,
I just purchased a 5th generation Airport Extreme to replace my home router. I previously had a Linksys wireless G which gave up on me. I've got a handful of computers that will be hooked up to the router. One of them is a Windows machine and it needs to be able to VPN into work. The VPN is a product from Buffalo Technology. I don't have much further information than that right now.
When I try to connect to the VPN it connects using "WAN Miniport (PPTP)" then verifies the user name and password then tries to connect to "WAN Miniport (SSTP)." The next message is "Connecting to _____ useing WAN Miniport (L2TP)'... When I get to this step a new window pops up and shows the following error message:
Error 800: The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunel, the security parameters required for IPsec negatiation might not be configured properly.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? I didn't have these problems on the other router when it was still in business. Thanks ahead of time for anyone who has suggestions.

When I try to connect to the VPN it connects using "WAN Miniport (PPTP)" then verifies the user name and password then tries to connect to "WAN Miniport (SSTP)." The next message is "Connecting to _____ useing WAN Miniport (L2TP)'...
What this is telling you is that the Buffalo VPN client is attempting to establish a secure connection to your company's VPN server/applicance using each of the common VPN connection methods. Since it was unable to establish a secure connection, its attempt to create a VPN tunnel has failed.
Typically, IPsec is used to establish a secure connection. For IPsec to work through a NAT firewall, UDP port 500 (for Internet Key Exchange IKE) & UDP port 4500 (for IPsec NAT-T) must be opened. This is offered as IPsec Passthrough on most consumer routers ... except the AirPorts. That is because, by default, they already have these ports opened for VPN as they are known as "VPN Passthrough" devices.
I would ask your work's IT for assistance on how to properly configure the Buffalo VPN client to work with your new router. It may have been configured for the earlier router and those settings may no longer apply.
