Connecting wireless imac and wired pc

I have recently purchased a large imac that is ready to go wireless but, my roomate has a pc laptop that can't go wireless. There is not enough room for both of us to operate in the same space and we can't work at the same time. I know it is simple for me to go wireless, but how do I keep him connected at the same time

Get a wireless router and have your room mate connect directly to it using ehternet. Take your iMac wherever you want (within a 100ft) and connect to the wireless network of your router. Alternatively there should be a 'slot' on your friend's laptop for a network adapter. If there is then your iMac connects by ethernet to the wireless router and your friend can take his laptop away and connect to ethe network. It would be much easier if the laptop is wirless because it is much easier to transport than the iMac

how do i connect my imac and my macbook so they are in sync and up to date with the same documents?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
There isn't a way to connect both Macs with a cable to keep your documents updated on them. However, if you need all your documents updated on both Macs, you can use a cloud service as iCloud or Dropbox to sync your documents. Preferably, I recommend Dropbox because it can sync all type of files between both computers > http://www.dropbox.com
Another thing you can do is to buy an external disk and put your documents here

  • Unable to set wireless connection with imac and Canon MX860 printer ...

I recently converted to a Mac and bought a Mac Book, iMac, Airport Extreme, and a Canon MX860 printer. i have installed the canon software numerous times on my iMac to set up the wireless connection. yes, the airport extreme recognizes the printer and i am able to connect to my private and guest networks. the signal strength is good. It's the next part that I'm always stuck at. The Printer settings does not display when i choose More Printers and select Canon IJ Network. I called Apple support and we tried changing my network settings to an unsecured network and it still has the same issue. It was recommended this may be Canon driver issue and advised me to contact Canon. I reset the Airport, changed my network name and password .. i think i tried everything and it still does not work. What was I thinking when i said i wanted to convert to Mac? I can't move forward and connect my macbook or pc yet until I successfully connect the imac. Yes, i installed the latest canon IJ Network tool. of course the USB connection is fine but that defeats the whole purpose if why i bought this printer. please advise how to fix. this is getting very frustrating.

"I ran into the same network installation issue that I've seen in other Canon printers. Canon's network setup forces you to connect by USB cable first. Only after you tell the program that you want to use the computer over the network can you remove the USB cable, move the printer if needed, and if you're using a wired connection, reconnect a network cable. The process isn't particularly difficult, but it's more cumbersome than what other printers let you do, which is simply put the printer where you want it, plug in an Ethernet cable, and install the software." source = http://shop.pcmag.com/shop/product/pcmag/84634068.aspx?SB=6&OB=1
"MAC wireless network printer setup requires turning off firewall, and works fine if you leave firewall off (not recommended). If you set firewall at "essential connections only," wireless networked MX860 won't work. You must add MP navigator and solution apps to your firewall enabled list. Then it worked fine on the admin account, but still won't work on users account which required additional permission settings and selections. After 2 hours it worked fine, but I would've expected better instruction manual for MAC." source = http://cnet.nytimes.com/multifunction-devices/canon-pixma-mx860/4852-3181_7-3352 9769.html
"The only trouble that I have had with this machine is setting up the wireless network. The manual instructions are impossible for me to understand and I ended up having to call for assistance. Which easily solved the problem. And again when I had to reconfigure my network settings it was impossible to follow the logarithm of instructions in the manual. Again I needed to call for assistance. If I need help after the year manufacture's warranty I will be charged for these calls." source = http://www.zimbio.com/InkjetPrinter+Reviews/articles/1932/Canon+PIXMA+MX860+Wireless+One+PhotoPrinter
    Even Windows people have trouble:
"I NEED INTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO CONNECT MY HP LAPTOP TO THE CANON MX860 PRINTER."
"I'm with you. I have my mx860 connected usb to my pc with the printer being shared but my wireless laptop can't find it no matter what I try."
    And, unhappy Vista person:
"I had high hopes for this printer - it seemed to have it all. But the wireless feature never worked, it only worked on my gigabit network for about two weeks (only THREE print jobs including the test print), and never observed it to work via USB - Vista (x64 Ultimate) would throw an error saying it could not attach the device."

  • Printer and Network connection between imac and PC (Wireless)

    Hi All
I Have connected successfully to the internet via my imac through airport as has my pc through a wireless network card. But my problem is sharing files, networking between the two computers, it doesn't want to happen!!
And i am unable to print through the imac, the printer is linked up to the PC via a USB. The imac and PC are both connected to a wireless router/modem.
Would like some advise on these issues. Any suggestions welcome!
    Cheers.

Everything I know about a mixed Mac/PC network, I learned from iFelix and Joel Shoemaker. They both have fabulous sites that go through the process step-by-painful-step.
As far as the printer sharing goes, it took me a while to get it right, but I ended up using both the files found here and got it to work. Of course it was an HP printer, but there are others located here for other brand printers.
Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

  • Can't connect wireless printer to wired PC in wireless/wired network

We have HP Officejet 6500A Plus (E710n-z) printer
Wireless router with 4 ethernet connections (SAGEMCOM 2864) - some pcs connect wirelessly and we have 3 connected via ethernet (network has several printers, 2 netbooks, IPad, 2 laptops and 4PCs currently configured - but with 5 active users it changes frequently)
Am able to connect printer to wireless PCs, laptops, etc - but cannot connect to wired PCs (running windows XP-home version)
I'd like to avoid forcing IP address for printer (everything else is automatic)  - Is there another workaround?
I do have another printer connected wirelessly to both wireless and wired PCs
Install / troubleshooting software assumes network is either all wired or all wireless
I don't mind using fixed IP address for install, but prefer not to use for ongoing connections
    Thanks for your help

PS - one computer has problem with "serscan.sys" file not found - this can, I believe, be resolved once I find download *since no longer have the windows XP install discs

    Hi Nancy,
Have you tried running the HP Netwrok Diagnostic Utility, which is available at www.hp.com/go/tools?  I no longer have a WinXP machine so I can't verify that it works on WinXP but, assuming it does, it could help you diagnose the problem.
Regarding using a static IP address, it is a really good idea (especially since it sounds like you know how to assign one to your printer).  It even helps to have a static IP once things are up-and-running because it generally prevents your PC's from losing contact with the printer.

  • How to configure Airport as wireless bridge and wired mode?

    I have two airport extremes.
1)APBN#1 - connected to Cable Modem and local 8port switch
    2) APBN#2 - in wireless bridge mode + Ethernet connected to APBN#1
I would like APBN#2 to act as a wireless bridge to extend my wireless range for my notebooks, but also provide wired ethernet connection to computers connected to it. HOwever, this creates an IP loop.
How would I be able to confiture my APBN#2 to act as BOTH a wireless bridge and ethernet switch without conflict?
    Thanks

I am having related problem I think ... have Cox ISP, a Linksys cable modem and AEBS #1 ... ethernet out of cable modem into AEBS #1 then into netgear 24 port switch (to feed all the ethernet ports in my house). I am unable to have both the AEBS and the wired network function at the same time.
They have been working for a couple years now ... and for some reason recently (past couple days) been problems...
If I get the wired (flowing through the AEBS) to work -- then no DNS is being sent to the wireless. If I get the wireless to work, the wired won't.... AEBS #1 (numbering it because once I it up I have another to extend it....)
    thanks

  • Sharing airport express internet connection with router and wired network

    Dear,
I want to set up the following network, but can't succeed.
    Components:
2 Powermacs quad G5's (airport and two ethernet ports)
2 Powerbooks G4 (airport and 1 ethernet port)
1 broadband wired router (1 Wan and 4 Lan ports)
    1 airport express
    1 cable internet connection.
1 LaCie Ethernet Disk mini 300 GB
The internet connection is at the other site of the office (little architecture office). It is not possible to get the internetconnection directly to the desk wth the computer. 1 Powermac G5 is set up to share his internet connection. (Share via airport with ethernet 1). The ethernet 1 port is connected to the Wan port of the wired router. The other Powermac G5's ethernet 1 port is connected to Lan 1 of the router. The LaCie Ethernet Disk mini 300 GB is connected to the the Lan 2 of the router.
All the conputers get their IP adresses bij DHCP. The router is set to distribute IP adresses. Without the router and the LaCie everything works fine. There is internet connection on every computer and filesharing in between them is possible.
I like to be able to do the following.
Use airport connection on the two powerbooks, for internet and access to the network. Use the wired connection between the powermacs and the lacie for filesharing. On the second powermac use internetconnection through the router. With this configuration is it possible to copy files fast between the powermacs and the lacie harddisk.
At the moment I'm trying to get internet connection on the second powermac. The ethernet port gives me a proper IP-adress and tells me that I can connect to the internet, but it won't let me go on the internet and when I turn the airport back on, safari buggs. Without the ethernet cable connected I can go on the internet without anny problem, but off cours the fast filesharing isn't possible any more.
A drawing of the desired network can be downloaded at the folowing website
    http://homepage.mac.com/maesen_jeroen/FileSharing14.html
Is there a possible sollution to this problem?
    thank you verry much
    Jeroen

Disable the DHCP server on your wired router. Since your Power Mac G5 Jeroen is sharing Internet, it is already providing DHCP.
Use airport connection on the two powerbooks, for internet and access to the network.
Sorry, but it is not possible for the PowerBooks to access the subnet created by the Power Mac G5 Jeroen.
Use the wired connection between the powermacs and the lacie for filesharing.
    Shouldn't be a problem.
On the second powermac use internetconnection through the router.
On Power Mac G5 Jeroen, you will need to disable the firewall or open the ports through the firewall needed by Power Mac G5 Nico to access the Internet.
Is there a possible sollution to this problem?
What you have is incredibly complicated. A much simpler solution is to
Get a 2nd AirPort Express (AX).
Use WDS to wirelessly connect the 2 AXs.
Connect an Ethernet switch (or hub) to the Ethernet port on the 2nd AX.
Connect all of your Ethernet clients (2 Power Mac G5s and LaCie) to this switch (or hub).
In this configuration your PowerBooks will have wireless access and all of your Ethernet devices will get IP addresses from the AX connected to the Internet.

  • Connection with iMac and Time Machine VERY slow

    People
For the past of couple of days the connection with my iMac and Time Capsule has gone askew. The iMac shows the wireless connection at 5GHz with a transmit rate over 200. However, internet is slow and backing up about 300mb is in its 24th hour and it's only reached 180mb.
I don't understand what may have happened. The two machines have been best mates for a long time and now something's gone wrong. The only thing I did a couple of days ago is install the Update for the Apple Magic Mouse.
On the other hand, my MacBook, which also have the Magic Mouse update, has not trouble with internet speed - wireless, once again - and the Time Machine backups are happening without a hitch.
I bit the bullet and turned off the Time Machine and rebooted it. Unfortunately, it's made no difference.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

Both your 5 GHz band and the guest band have the same SSID unless you have assigned separate names to them. I think it's much easier to identify them if they have separate names of your choice.
If you have a separate name for the guest 2.4 GHz band, click on the Airport icon at the top of your screen and then click "Join other network". The 2.4 GHz band should appear as a choice and you can connect to it.
I'm using Leopard, not Snow Leopard so I don't know if things display the same way on our operating system. If you want your computer to connect to a given network:
    Click System Preferences, then Network.
Click the AirPort connection on the left and then click the Advanced button at the lower right. You can drag the network that you want your computer to connect to first to the top of the list.

  • Brand New iMac and wired keyboard not working

I just bought a new iMac.The wired keyboard seems to work, the mouse is plugged into the keyboard and that works, and I can, somewhat make changes to the volume and other small changes. The ESC key works (I can turn off VoiceOver)but... I can not even get the computer up and going. I can not put in my name or other registration information.
Any ideas if the keyboard has some kind of other settings that I need to turn off. There is no software or anything else in the Mac that I know of. It is brand new and just arrived today.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm so sorry. I know this a bummer. But better to take it back. When you take it in, if they boot it and get it to work, make sure and shut down the iMac, wait about ten seconds and press the power button. Make sure it boots to the Desktop and that your keyboard functions as it should. Just make absolutely sure it works before you bring it back home. In fact, since you could not get through the registration process, perhaps they will go through that with you since had problems with it. Something isn't communicating between the iMac and the keyboard. Could be the USB ports, software/hardware ... hopefully they'll repair it to your satisfaction or replace it.

  • Connecting My iMac and Macbook

I am currently trying to connect my macbook and iMac to share files between them both. I have file sharing enabled on both computers but when i go to the finder and see my macbook under the shared pulldown menu it wont let me connect. It just says Connection Failed and nothing happens when i click Connect as. This happens when i do it from my iMac and my Macbook.
I am new to this so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to hear it's fixed! When you do an 'archive' install, all the directories associated with the OS are moved to a "Previous System" -- this includes folders you don't normally ever store your own files or applications in, as well as the applications & utilities that would have originally come with OS X found in the Applications or Utilities folder (which are replaced with fresh copies). This folder exists for archive/reference purposes only. OS X will never actually use anything in that folder ever again.
You can see a detailed list in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Anything YOU put on the Mac (apps you installed, files in your home directory, etc.) are mostly not affected.
I say "mostly" because there are a few exceptions and these wont apply to everyone.
Any app you install which has to modify an OS component in order to work (the most common example I can think of is a 3rd party VPN -- for example I use Cisco VPN on my laptop.) While I would still see the Cisco VPN icon in my Applications folder, if I were try to use it, I would find that it doesn't actually work. The solution is to remove the old app and re-install it again.
You'll find the "Previous System" folder is taking quite a chunk of disk space. It doesn't hurt anything to leave it, and the only reason to leave it is if there were any files you modified that you might want to reference (for example... if you added static host definitions to /etc/hosts and wanted to copy these entries to your new /etc/hosts) -- again... things that most users would never touch.
Once you've been using your re-installed Mac for a while, have exercised every app you've installed (at least once) and find that everything is working, you can go ahead and free up that disk space by erasing the "Previous System" folder.

  • Connecting 2 iMacs and using Syncopation

For some reasen I just don't get it done: connecting two iMacs (with up to date software) and then using Syncopation 2.2 to make a back-up of my iTunes library.
I'm not comfortable with 'networks' and this seems to play a role here.
I have connected the two Macs using ethernet but I have the feeling I forget something or do something wrong.
That, combined with the fact Syncopation provides very unsatisfactory instructions, makes that although the machines 'see' each other:
a newly bought album is not back upped to the second Mac.
If anyone can provide me with a step-by-step-manual-for-complete-dummies to solve this, I would be very, very grateful.
    Thanks!!!

We do not have any way to know how your app 'Syncopation" should work or is working.  You need to go on the web and contact Syncopation's web Techincal Support to get proper help with that.

  • Which Firewire Cable to connect an iMac and a Mac mini ???

    Hi guys
What Firewire cable should I buy to connect an iMac G5 and a Mac mini G4 and use a partition on the mini as a Target Disk?
    I've read something about 4 pin, 6 pin, 9 pin... 400, 800
I have no idea what type of cable I have to buy and if it makes different about performance...
    Cheers!

No, you need a FW400 6-pin to 6-pin cable and they are all the same. FW800 has an entirely different connector and neither the iMac nor the mini have it. It might be called IEEE1394 or iLink on the package, but it is all FireWire 400 in stores generally. I have never seen a FW800 cable in a regular retail store.

Here are the logs : ap_logs.png
    2) I have motorola 9190 connected to a specific SSID, our customer use these motorola to scan the merchandising. They disconnect some times and they have to reconnect manually again, or reboot the scanner...
Here you can find the logs also: scan_logs.png
Here you can see the client was connected at 8h03, and disconnected at 8h05...
If someone can help me, because i really don't understand what is going on...
    Thanks in advance,
    Alexis

Stay away from this code... I would recommend you to go for 7.6.130.0 (7.6 MR3) when it releases within next couple of weeks.
    Then see whether problem persist
