Connection Failed, To A Server On My Network

I have a Mac Mini that I use for backing up several other Macs on my network. The problem is, the only user that can log into the Mini, is the user name and password that is the owner of the Mini.
I connect to the Mini by: Finder > Go > Network
Then I select the Mini and choose Connect.
When I enter the user name and password of the main account on the Mini, it works just fine.
When I try to connect to the Mini with any of the other accounts I set up on the Mini, they all fail. The message I get is:
Connection Failed -5000
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
G5 Dual 2.5 GHZ, 4.5 MB (cause WinXP Can't), GeForce 6800 Ultra, Sonnet SATA 4+4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Here's how I moved the user directories:
Move User Folder:
sudo ditto -rsrcFork -V /Users /Volumes/SecondPartitionName/Users
Update NetInfo Manager:
/Volumes/SecondPartitionName/Users/
Delete Old User Directory:
sudo rm -dr /Users
Create Symbolic Link To New Directory:
sudo ln -s /Volumes/SecondPartitionName/Users /Users
When I mentioned that I had to "point" the system to the neew drive, I realized that I had forgotten to update NetInfo Manager with the new path name.
So, as I first mentioned, I did all the above steps when I first set up the system. However, then I added new users, who weren't in the user directory on the second partition. So, I deleted all the new users. Then added one back. I performed all the steps above, except I added the new user name after /Users. Such as:
sudo ditto -rsrcFork -V /Users/NewUser /Volumes/SecondPartitionName/Users/NewUser
This appears to be working. The new user can now log directly into the Mini. Also, the new user can log into the Mini over the network and the new user can see all the contents of their home directory.
In terms of the Second Partition:
Ingore ownership is NOT checked.
Owner is system.
Group is admin
Others is Read Only
However, I have a second, external drive that I partitioned for each user. I want each user to be able to access their own parition and use that to back up their files. I don't want the other users to have access to other users partitions. (except for the Mini's administrator). Unfortunatley, the only thing each user can access is their own Home directory. Only the Mini administrator can log into the Mini and have the option to mount any of the partitions.
Now each of the partions on the external driver DO have ignore ownership on this volume checked. Also, the owner for each external partition is the Mini administrator. Also the Group is the Mini administrator.
Should I assign ownership for each partition to each user?
Will the Mini administrator still be able to access all partitions?
Do I need to create some new groups to better manange this?

  • Connection failed the file server is running on your machine

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could potentially help me figure out an issue I have been encountering when connection to server via VPN Connection.
I can successfully connect to a VPN connection, however, when I try and connect to my server I am receiveing a prompt that "connection failed the file server is running on your machine"
Does anyone know what this means or has suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Alex

Check you network settings and the computer name in sharing preferences.
If you still have problems read a few of the hits at this Google search:

I cannot get my iMac with built-in airport wi-fi to allow internet connections to Nook and PS3. The devices access the network, but internet connection fails. Internet sharing is enabled, network security (WEP, WPA) is disabled.  What to check next?

On an additional note, I've purchased a wireless router and everything connected on the first attempt.  It just vexes me that the built-in wireless isn't working as a router.  Is this another example of "Mac only plays with Mac"?

  • I recently bought an external hard drive and attached it to a wireless modem router. The problem is that i can't access it from my macbook. I get a "connection failed" and "the server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally".

Well I believe I described the problem above. I want only to add that the external hard drive is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive 1TB and the wireless modem router is a Belkin N Plus (model F5D8635-4 v1). Also, in the finder window under "shared" I see a "belkinserver" and when I click it, it says "connection failed". If I click "connect as" I get the "the server "belkinserver" is available on your computer..." which I mentioned above. I tried to connect macbook via ethernet to the modem router and then when I typed "smb://belkinserver" it immediately prompted me for a username and a password and when I typed them finally I got to enter the contents of the hard drive! So what's the problem wirelessly?

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • DTW connection failed to license server

    Hi,
we got problem with the license allocation of the SAP Server, I followed the solution below from SAP Notes.
    1. Close all SAP Business One clients.
    2. Make a copy of the file (C:\Program Files\SAP\SAP Business One
ServerTools\License\B1Upf.xml) and save it with a different name or in a different folder.
    3. Delete the original file.
    4. Stop/Start the license server.
    5. Connect to SAP Business One and assign the licenses (Administration -> License ->
License Administration). You will need to reassign licenses for all your users.
After this the problem was fixed. but when using the DTW it wont connect to the license server.
    the error it says:
Connection to localhost has failed error code: 100000001/100000000x
    Connection with license server failed
    Pls. help with the solution.

  • BPEL server connection failed in Integration Server connect

I am creating an 'Integration server' in the JDeveloper.
After furnishing the details (App server name, Host, Port) on testing the connection it gets failed for BPEL process manager server:
    Application Server: OK
    BPEL Process Manager Server: FAILED
    ESB Server: OK
The BPEL identity service failed to start because of the error: java.io.FileNotFoundException:http://hostname:8888/integration/services/testconnection/BPELConnection
    Any ideas?
    thanks in advance.
    Bin

    Hi Françoise,
I think Application Server Test uses OPMN Port and for testing BPEL and ESB HTTP port is used.
Do you use default 8888 HTTP Port Number? When you create a Integration Server Connection it is default value, but maybe you have installed Oracle Application Server on another http port.

  • Server App won't connect to my MacMini Server on my network via Wi-Fi, what am I doing wrong?

I've been able to connect to my server thru screen sharing with no problems, but when I try to use the Server App via my 13" MacBook Pro via Wi-Fi it just keeps spinning and never connects?  Any ideas?

    @jlisburn
servermgrd is what the Server App communicates with to read/adjust settings.
You could uninstall/reinstall the server app.. that may take care of your issue or is at least worth a try.
Not much of a downside to this, your data and settings are not kept in the app.
When you trash it, the services will shut down. When you replace it (download from app store) it will re-use the same settings and data.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4141719?start=0&tstart=0
of course, make sure your local DNS setup properly forward and reverse.
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
should return positive (matching) results, not a mismatch.
I would also verify your volume with disk utility.

  • Local network error: Connection Failed.

I get the following error message when trying to access any of the computers on our local netwrok:
    Connection failed.
The server may not exist or itnot operational at
this time. Cjecl tje server name or IP address and
your network connection and try again.
The computers on the network show up in the Finder under Shared, but when I choose one of the icons, it shows up as Connection Failed - and nothing happens when clicking Connect As.

Have you tried manually connecting to a shared Mac by its IP address?
from the finder press command +K then enter the IP address of the mac you are trying to connect to.
this would rule out an issue with ipv4 networking.
then using the same method use the macs bonjour name. This is the computer name specified in that servers sharing preferences followed by .local
    eg.
    imac.local
This would find out if the issue is with bonjour networking.
Also in an earlier thread a mac could not connect to any shared computers and this was resolved by the procedure shown in Mac OS X 10.5: "The text entered does not appear to be a recognized URL format" alert when connecting to server or Time Machine

  • G5 - 10.4.11 - Connection Failed Error - Have network access

A Mac user where I work had a crash this morning that is causing an odd issue.
All other Macs and PCs I've tested can connect to both the Windows and Mac shares.
The OS at the time of the crash was 10.4.10, the issue existed then and remained after applying 10.4.11.
The Mac in question can ping the server name and IP address of the servers it cannot connect to and has full internet access. I've reset the netinfo database, tried using the secondary ethernet port and replaced a host of preference (plist) files.
    Any suggestions?
    Symptoms:
    1. The user can no longer mount AFP shares G5 XSERVE using the server name or IP address. When attempting to mount a share, they receive an error stating "Connection Failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again."
    2. The user can no longer mount SMB shares on a W2K3 server.
The error received is "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "the share name" or IP address could not be read or written. (Error Code -36)"

Unfortunately, I didn't keep a list of the .plist files I deleted, but I remember deleting the finder one and any that had network in the name.
I ran the Applejack utility and it did fix a great number of permissions and I saw two pages of items with AFP in the path flash by my eyes almost Matrix like. There were no disk errors. After the reboot, still no joy. I did manage to find an afpLoad.crash.log and a mount_smbfs.crash.log file on the machine.

  • Ask another DNS server if connection fails with the current one

    Hello,
I'd like to ask if there's an addon available or a hidden feature in Firefox which allows it to enable trying to use other DNS servers if a connection failed to a server. Lets do an example, would be the easiest way of explaining:
    1. I want to connect to Google.com
    2. Firefox / Windows asks the DNS server for the IP
    3. Firefox tries to connect to Google but fails (Website took to long to answer for example)
    4. Firefox will try another DNS server you have entered in your IPv4 DNS Page
Or does Firefox already do that? Because sometimes it fails to connect to a server while using a special DNS server. If I change the settings to another DNS Server it works.
    Thank you

    Please update to version 20.

  • OS 10.4.4- Classic - I'm getting a "Connection Failed" Alert

This problem started out of the blue... running OS 10.4.4 with Classic, I'm getting an alert "Connection Failed This file served is running on your machine. Please access the volume and files locally." BEFORE Classic finishes loading. I click the "OK" button and all is well - UNTIL I print from Classic - then I get it again. (Mainly from Pagemaker 6.5) Sometimes when I click "OK", it just goes away, and the document prints... other times, it repeats and I have to take Classic out.
I have checked my Network settings, my Classic settings, and my Sharing settings - all to no avail.
HELP! This is driving me crazy! At some points, I have to reboot in OS 9.2.2, and run everything from there - YUK!
    Hints, tricks, advice???

Well, with some minor changes, I've succeeded in getting my alert to go away.
I did all the usual stuff--ran cron scripts, repaired permissions (even OS 9), etc but without luck. Still got the alert when booting classic with extensions off so I figured the problem had to be on the OS X side of things. I stopped all file sharing services (personal, windows, web, etc) and rebooted classic--voila! No alert. I then turned on sharing services one at a time and rebooted classic with each change to check the effect. I was able to turn my original sharing services (personal and windows) back on without the alert returning.
I don't know why this worked, but hope it will work for you.

  • 'Connection failed' dialogue box

Using my MacBook (10.5.6) on my home Apple Extreme network I'm getting a persistent 'Connection failed' dialogue box.
I can connect to the network and other Mac's on the same network without any problem, yet this persistent little box keeps popping up with its message: 'Connection failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again'
I'd be grateful for some pointers as to why this may be happening. Is there anyway to disable it?
    Many thanks

    Hi All,
I also had the same problem here... driving me nuts trying to fix it. I also had my connection to my Time Capsule drop, reconnect, only to drop again in the same session. The combination resulted in over 8 minutes to fully boot up my MBP with an questionable airport connection. Looking at another issue, I may have found a fix (at least it cleared up my problems). Looking at "Macbook sporadically fails to connect to Time Capsule" (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9239652&#9239652), I tried a fix posted by Joel H --
    +++++++++++++++++++
"Open airport utility, click your time capsule, click 'continue'. On every page you can either accept current settings or change them. You want to change the one that has a 'device' password to a 'disk' password."
    +++++++++++++++++++
I tried this, after I had deleted my Keychain Airport prefs and rebooted, entering in my Airport Time Capsule password again (my TC was already set to 'disk' password). Wahlah, it worked solving both problems!!!! I still get an "Unable to mount G-Drive" error (I use my G-Drive to backup my TC via USB) when I don't have my G-Drive connected to my TC and powered up but the boot time is now less than a minute. Apple still needs to address this problem. We, Apple users, shouldn't have to scour the entire discussions site to find a fix.

  • Suppress "Connection Failed" Error Messages on Client?

    Hi there,
I have a Leopard server which is Managing Preferences for users in groups. In my Login Preference for a group, I have it basically "auto mounting" shares, such as smb://leopard-server/accounting and smb://leopard-server/graphics.
The works great so far. A user logs into their machine, managed prefs determines their group membership, and poof all the appropriate network drives show up on their desktop.
Problem is - when a user is off the network (for instance, at home with their laptop), after they power up and login they are immediately assailed with error messages, one for each failed connection to a network drive: "Connection failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time".
Now it is understandable why Leopard is bringing up those error messages - it's trying it's best to connect to the network drive but the user isn't on the network.
Question is: is there any way to suppress these error messages and let the users who are off-network boot to their desktop "quietly"?
I know you can hold the Option key at login in order to turn off Managed Prefs altogether, but the problem with that is users tend to forget to turn Managed Prefs back on when they get back into the office.
    Any ideas?

It's not just you, I am seeing this behaviour too.
Where 10.4 clients would fail silently, 10.5 is throwing the "Connection Failed" error message as you described.
I agree it is confusing to end users and would like a way to supress it, the only thing that springs to mind is manually mounting the share via a login hook that first checks network availability rather than using a WGM configured mount. Trouble is, to mount an afp share with the users credentials via a script is a whole new problem in itself.

  • Time Machine "Connection failed" window constantly appears

I have had many problems with Time Machine and Time Capsule. I could not get it to back up for weeks and constantly had windows popping up saying, "Connection failed. The server 'Pages–Time–Capsule.local' may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
I finally decided to give up on TM and simply back up to a hard drive using Super Duper! After shutting off TM, restarting, etc. I STILL get this message constantly. Often I have to click on the close button six times to get it to stop! I am not a computer expert, but I have tried everything I can think of and have read the Apple forum until I am cross-eyed, but have had no success in getting rid of this message.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
I can see why you might want to stop using the Time Capsule as a destination for your backups, at least temporarily, but why did you stop using Time Machine? It will happily back up to an external hard drive, and keep you better protected with it's hourly backups and copies of previous versions of things you've changed or deleted. All you have to do is be sure the disk is formatted/erased properly (see #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum), and use the +Select Disk+ button in +Time Machine Preferences.+
The difficulty with your Time Capsule seems to be either some sort of interference or signal quality problem.
I'd suggest browsing, searching, or re-posting that in the +Time Capsule+ forum, where the communications gurus hang out. It's hidden in the +Digital Life+ section, at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1253

I've tried opening iDVD from application folder as well as from within iMovie.
It's been a couple of weeks since I used it. Worked fine last time. There was an update that I noticed in the last couple of weeks. Perhaps that's it, but I don't see any other posts.
Any suggestions, please let me know.
    Thanks.

Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner.
I own both a powerbook G4 and Mac Pro, and network the two sometimes in order to switch files back and forth as necessary to take things on the road.
Although the iDVD project was exclusively on the MacPro, (Indeed, I even tried starting a new project on the MacPro, but iDVD still wouldn't respond), I believe the Powerbook must have been connected at some point in the process (just hanging out there), and for some reason iDVD got confused. As soon as I reconnected the Powerbook, iDVD was fine.
And then I disconnected the two computers and iDVD continued (and continues) to work fine.
I'm not a programmer. Not sure what happened, but it seemed to fix itself.
PS: For those programmers out there, when I say iDVD was unresponsive, I mean it. I had to force quit every time. It wasn't just that iDVD couldn't find any necessary files.
