Connection to the database (beginner's question)

I do not quite understand the relation between "@connect alias" and actual TNS name. The documentation tells that the syntax should be:
connect user/pass[@connect_alias] as sysdba
I have TNS names defined myora01 and global one myora01.home.net. Are one these two names suppose to be a "@connect_alias"? Well, it does not work this way:
connect user/pass@myora01 as sysdba;
ERROR:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
Where is my mistake?
Regards
Leonid

LeonidIf you use the syntax "sqlplus scott/tiger" (or within sqlplus, "conn scott/tiger"), you are asking to connect to a local (on the same machine) database instance identified by the value of the environment variable ORACLE_SID. Tnsnames.ora is not involved.
If you use the syntax "sqlplus scott/tiger@mydb" (or within sqlplus "conn scott/tiger@mydb") you are asking to connect to the database (local or remote) identified by the "mydb' entry in your tnsnames.ora file.
=================================
Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
{code}
larry =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = curley)
{code}
Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
{code}
$> sqlplus scott/tiger@larry
{code}
tns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Next, tns sends a request to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
Next, the request arrives at port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, you'll be connected.
A couple of important points.
First, the listener is a +server side only+ process. It's entire purpose in life is the receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It +creates+ the connection. It doesn't +sustain+ the connection. One listener, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a +client side+ issue. It's purpose is for addressess resolution - the tns equivelent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
What can go wrong?
First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"

  • Problem with EM (Enterprise Manager is not able to connect to the database)

    Hi all,
    I've Oracle DB 11g Rel.1 installed on Windows XP SP3. The database is up and running i.e. everyone can connect to the DB by using any App tool e.g. SQL*Plus, Forms, or Reports. It means that the listener and the service is running. But the problem is that when I try to start the EM I see some error messages on the webpage.
    It says:

    Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g is running.I have checked some documents around config files in sysman and test_orcl\sysman directories. Moreover, I have checked dbsnmp and sysman account for unlockness and password accuracy. But they did not help me to solve the problem.
    My question is if every thing is working fine then what is the problem with the EM? Why it is not connecting to the DB?
    Thanks.

  • How is the best way to connect to the Database ?

    I just have a question regarding to the connection to the Oracle DB.
    Every time I create a new JSP I am writing java code such as:
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver").newInstance();
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@host:1521:DB",
    "user",
    "pwd");
    Is there a way I can reuse the connection that we create on JDeveloper on the tab Connections, under the Database node ?
    Because I would like to centralized more the way how I connect to DB.
    Thanks!
    Giovani

    That is a nice solution, but only works if you use embedded OC4J, if not you must define datasources, maybe in standalone OC4J, OAS, JBoss, etc
    this is because the embedded OC4J automatically create datasources if it sees database connectiones created through Connections Tab

  • Best Practice for closing a blocking connection to the database.

    Background:
    Using toplink/eclipselink to manage the the connection to the database.
    We support 3 databases, Oracle, Mysql, and MSSQL.
    We host the an application locally (SAAS) and we also distribute it to our clients so they can run it on premise.
    Problem:
    From time to time the application will execute a route that query the DB and will take 10+ minutes. When we find these queries we generally fix them, but it takes time to fix the problem and roll new code to production. We have also found that if an end user executes the query to many times they can potentially bring the service down - maxing out the database connection, or putting a huge load on the DB effectively rendering the system to a crawl.
    During this time period the IT team need a way to abort a transaction. The current approach, for our SAAS solution, to scan the database find to the long running query and kill it. The application is smart enough to recover and everything seems to work fine. This doesn't always work for our on premise customers - often they don't have a DBA or adequate resources to monitor the system. Therefore, I'm looking for a way to have the application kill/close any query that is lasting longer then X minutes. We currently track the duration of every thread so I can get the time the thread has been actively running.
    Stack Trace
    Currently we keep track of how long each thread is running waiting for a response from the database such as the stacktrace below, I would like to grab the connection and physically close it. Since we are using a java socket and it's in a blocking state there is no way for us to interrupt the thread. The only option is to wait for it to receive a response from the db - kill the sql process - or to close the java socket.

    Question
    What is the best way to grab the connection and close it - from another thread?

    The reason for changing the namespace is to guarantee that they appear as different versions.  The namespace is part of the strong name of the DLL when deployed.  Yes they will be deployed to separate servers because a server can only belong
    to one farm.  But when you are doing a migration it won't be clear that you need to install the 2013 version since the .DLL will report that it exists in the 2010 farm already. It will work without changing the namespace, but it would be best to differentiate
    versions at that level to avoid confusion.

  • URGENT!!!!!!!! Tomcat 5.0 does not connect to the database !!!!!!

    We had an already existing system on tomcat 4.1.18. Since migrating to Tomcat 5.0, we are facing lots of problem while trying to connect to the database. The database in SQL Server 2000.
    The first time i try to connect (after restarting tomcat service) the system is able to connect to the database but after sometime it again stops connecting.
    The beans on our system are able to connect to the database without any problem but when we try using the same via http, it doesnt connect. The classpath is set properly. Also the database drivers are also the latest ones and in the proper place. We have placed them in the common/lib folder. We have checked that normal jsp pages which are not connecting to the database are working fine.
    Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks in advance

    well.....Tomcat is not a database connecting engines.....U would need to check your db connection codes to check if you have missed anything.....so the first question will be

  • Unable to connect to the database to product shared services

    Hi
    I got an error in configuring shared services with the Oracle server database
    "" Unable to connect to the database to product shared services ""
    I created a database that is working properly when accessed by a client.
    I typed everything in config utility, Does we need to take care of any other servies?
    I appreciate if any one help with this.
    Thanks

    Version: Hyperion System 9 and Oracle 9i

    John is of course correct that XP is not a supported environment for Essbase 9.3.x.
    Having said that, I have successfully installed Shared Services, Essbase, and EAS on multiple XP laptops. I have done so with 9.2 (painful) and 9.3.1 (just about painless) although always against SQL Server. This is strictly for development/kick the tires work, never as a production environment.
    Planning has quite an issue with XP (and Vista) although I have heard that there is a Windows Registry fix for this.
    Of course Oracle support is going to gong you if you call up with questions about your laptop -- it isn't supported.
    One last thing -- Shared Services and laptop suspends =! stability. For my development purposes, I have backed off Shared Serivces and just go with Essbase as a service with native security and EAS.

    P.S. VMs are probably the way to go if your desktop/laptop has the horsepower to drive a proper OS with the VM overhead. On a 4 gigabyte laptop with a Duo Core (no, not a Mac, I just can't remember what Intel calls it -- the power of marketing) VMServer running Windows Server 2003 and the full stack is pretty slow, but it works.

  • Connection to the database

    I have a page that contains a task menu. The links of some of the tasks leaves me to a jsp page. The bean associated to the loaded page connects to the database to load the dynamic data.
    My questions are: each time someone loads the jsp page, a connection to the database is established? Where do I have to close the connection?
    Is this a good solution or is it better to use a servlet that in its init method establishes the connection, and then pass this connection to the bean? If I use a servlet the action of the taks menu will have to call the servlet and then this will have to redirect to the correct jsp page. Am I right?
    Where can I find a good example that helps me decide when to use a servlet or when to use a jsp page?
    Thanks for your comments and help

    The links of some of the tasks lead you to jsp pages. From each of those jsp pages call a servlet (keep only 1 common servlet).
    This servlet would determine the request type (i.e. from which of the jsp pages the request is coming from). Based on the request type the servlet would perform the operations.
    Write a class say, CreateConnectionHelper that creates the connection.
    The servlet will call this class whenever it needs to create a connection.
    After you create a connection perform the database operations and close the connection.

    Any ideas on how I can fix this!

    Well, that's an old version of SharePoint! That database is the name of the configuration database for your deployment. This may have to do with the Timer Service.
    Can you check this kb to see if it's of any use for you?

    Please give it a try and let us know how it works out.

  • Itext connect to the database and put values in a table

    Hi, I have a problem because I can't find any tutorial that would connect to the database using the itext servlet and then update the table. I have found a source code that is transferring the database items on the list package of itext. I need an example that is dynamically creating a table. Can anyone please help me with these problem. I need it to for my reports or could anyone suggest an easy to use library rather than itext. THANKS

    Guys, need your help...I just want to populate a resultSet on an itext table.I don't know what it means to "populate a ResultSet on an iText table". I guess the tool you are using to translate your question to English isn't very good.
    Does it mean you have an iText table (whatever that is) and you want to create a ResultSet that allows you to extract data from it? Or do you really have a table in your database, and you want to use a ResultSet based on that table to create something in iText? Or what?
