Console logs - All Messages v Console Messages

Hi,
In Utilities/Console, what is the difference between the Console Messages log and the All Messages log?
Thanks,
b.

My understanding is that Console Log is really showing you the current System log from /private/var/log. The All Messages log would also show you things from the Kernel log, crash logs, and any other separate logs that your apps/user may create.

  • Strange message in console after upgrading to ML

    Hi!
I recently upgraded my system to ML. The operation went fine and the only issue I had was that VMware fusion stopped working, as it was outdated. Everrithing seems to be working nicely well, indeed much faster than OS X 10.7.4. However I'm getting the following error message in console log and have no idea what the reason could be.

The console log is much larger, this messages will repeat ciclically no matter what applications I'm using, numbers between brackets will vary (I can't see them in activity monitor so I'm not sure if they're PIDs)
    Things I've done until now:
    - Looked for corrupted preference files
    - Repaired permissions and searched for wrong preferences files.
    - Cleaned the system from potentially troubling user agents and daemons
    - Removing third party apps from launch at login
    Any clues?
    Thanks.

    Hello:
Your English is excellent...far better than some who claim it is their mother tongue
My answer was a bit flippant, sorry
I looked at my own logs after reading your last post.  I note all sorts of incomprehensible (to me) messages - some indicating errors.  I have no clue what the sandbox messages indicate.
The other problems could be caused by a number of things - including hardware problems.
You might try resetting the PRAM and SMC.  Those are not cure alls, but they cannot hurt anything either.

  • Console logs: Couldn't read user-specified computer name

Last night I was experiencing frozen apps, was unable to open web pages and could not open the Apple menu to Restart computer. Somehow I eventually managed to Restart and everything seemed OK.
When I checked in Console logs tonight, I saw this message:
Couldn't read user-specified Computer name; using default using default "Macintosh 00145112d484. local instead"
I found BDAqua"s reply to a similar problem dated 4/14/08 - "Try editing it in both places in Sharing Pref pane." However, I could not find what I exactly had to edit!
I would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks.

    Hi there,
However, I could not find what I exactly had to edit!
    In System Preferences>Sharing Pref pane...
Then click on the edit button to verify, it'll have the .local after it here.

I am assuming that this is related to my slow computer after waking from sleep.  Every click has delayed reaction up to spinning beach ball in length.  Went to console log and see this same message repeating over and over and over.  What does it mean?  How do I fix it?  Is it related to the slowdown?
    Thanks

Ok...  Sometimes Mail will abort the restart that I am trying to do to get the system back to normal speed so I was wondering about that "plug-in" which appears to be more than a plug in.  It put a bundle in my Library/Mail folder that can't be deleted...
Here is my log now which starts showing errors as soon as I reboot... I am backing up now.  It seems that there should be something that I could remove without a clean install, but I can't figure it out from this....Thanks for the insight...

  • Time in console logs stay in between 7:00 and 7:59

My system time seems to be fine, but somehow, my console logs and my Adium chat messages always show a time between 7:00 to 7:59. Any logs to the console always report a time between what I said. It never changes, no matter what time of day it is. I can type "date" from the command line and I get the correct time of day, but I'm not sure why part of my system thinks it's always at 7. Here's a sample of what my console logs look like before it reverts from 7:59 to 7:00.
    7/13/09 7:59PM [0x0-0x18018].com.apple.systemuiserver[241] DigiHub:sendChargingCommandToDevice RequestExtraPower(kUSBPowerDuringWake) returned 500

Here is one where it changed the time in the morning at 7 instead of at night. "ocspd" seems to be the issue, but I don't know how to fix this.
    7/13/09 7:54AM /usr/sbin/ocspd[2001] starting
    7/13/09 7:09AM /usr/sbin/ocspd[2026] starting

Ok, maybe it's not ocspd, but something to do with Timemachine. Here's a new log I've copied and pasted.
7/14/09 7:59PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1583] Ejected Time Machine network volume.

I have no idea why the time keeps on resetting back to 7PM. Does anyone have any debugging ideas I could do?

  • Log every incoming messages and outgoing messages in OSB

    Hi,
There is a customer who owns a service platform with hugely traffic.
We wants to sell him the OSB.
But he wants to keep record of every incoming and outgoing messages in the platform, so if there is any problem in the platform, he can quickly identify the problem.
Is there any function or tool to do this feature in OSB?
    Thanks for any suggestion!

He wants log all incoming and outgoing messages and related information (ex: message id) into DB, so his administrators can easily track down specfic messages. For these type of use cases we provided report action. OSB comes with default report provider , but you can as well right one if out of box report provider doesnot t not suite you requirements. http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13159_01/osb/docs10gr3/operations/reporting.html
Other option would be to use WebLogic Logging Services to capture the proper log information and store to DB. I remember log4j has that ability. http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs103/logging/logging_services.html

I had a system freeze. After forced shutdown, repairing permissions, repairing disk, cleaning caches etc.

In the console app under "LOG DATABASE QUERIES" the entries all messages and console message are no longer showing entries!!!
The last ones are up until the crash.

you can follow the instructions given on MacFixit:

just deleting the asl files within the /var/log/asl directory may be enough to fix the problem; the asl manager will be forced to reinitialize the logs writing that appear in the log database database queries on the console.

  • Error messages in Console Log of Apple System Profiler

Today, I manually executed some CRON scripts from the Terminal window as part of a regular maintenance cycle. Before doing so, I ran the Apple System Profiler (OS 10.2.8), clicked on the Logs tab, and checked the Console Log. It had three days of error messages and other info (more on this later), but my intent was just to check the last entries in the log before running the CRON scripts, so that I could detect any additional errors logged as a result of the CRON scripts.
Having checked the log, I quit the Profiler and all other applications. Then I opened the Terminal window and entered:
    sudo periodic monthly
I was prompted for my adminstrator password, and it then executed the script. It took just seconds to execute. Following this, I also executed
    sudo periodic weekly
    sudo periodic daily
The weekly CRON took about 2 minutes to finish, and the daily only a few seconds. I ran Apple System Profiler again and checked the console log and found this additional error message (not present prior to running the scripts):

Can anyone tell me what this error means, and what, if anything, I should do about it?
Following all of this, I next repaired my permissions with Disk Utility (and yes, after dragging iTunes 6.0.2 to the desktop). I then ran the profiler, checked the log, and encountered these two additional error messages:
file not in an order that can be processed (local relocation entries out
    of place): ./Library/Frameworks/StuffIt.framework/Versions/A/StuffIt
file not in an order that can be processed (local relocation entries out
    of place): ./Library/Frameworks/StuffIt.framework/Versions/A/StuffIt
    (Again, hard returns are inserted.)
The errors are identical. They presumably were generated by my running disk permissions, as other applications were shut down. It appears the error refers to the Suffit application.
Any ideas what causes these errors?
Finally, a last question. (And thanks for being patient with such a long post.) The console log contains a large number of error messages for each day. This occurs even on days when I have had no apps hang, or any other system problems (power failures, etc.) that I was aware of. Many of the errors seem to involve windows manangement. The most common one is:
    Feb 14 17:11:18 Drake-Bradleys-Computer /System/Library/
    CoreServices/SystemUIServer.app/Contents/MacOS/SystemUIServer:
    kCGErrorIllegalArgument : CGSGetWindowGeometry: Invalid window
    But other examples are:
    Feb 14 17:42:21 Drake-Bradleys-Computer WindowServer[194]:
Cannot merge groups (yet) for wid 1877, otherwid 1881
    Feb 15 10:34:37 Drake-Bradleys-Computer WindowServer[194]:
Reserved range exhausted. (0xbbf45000 to 0xbc271000 goes out of
    bounds)
    Feb 15 10:35:03 Drake-Bradleys-Computer WindowServer[194]:
    CGXRemoveTrackingArea : Invalid tracking area
Is it fairly common for the console log to be filled with dozens of errors like this on a given day even though the iMac seems to be functioning normally?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Drake Bradley
P.S. I have a Casio digital camera and an HP printer hooked up to the iMac, and very recently, an Iomega HDD. (The latter was not connected for the tests reported above.)

    Hi Drake,
Yes, it is common, and I wouldn't worry about it.
These "errors" are not about anything wrong. My guess is that it's a developer jargon to indicate that something didn't happen, only because there is no possibility of it happening given your specific settings/system options.
See for example the statements "System woke from sleep" or "System going to sleep" in "error_log"...
We don't know to what extend these "errors" belong to so many unmodified files that used to do something in UNIX 15 years ago, but are now completely useless, harmless and so small they can't affect Mac OS X performance in any way?
    Enjoy your Mac!

    Hello,
a few days Mail.app of 10.4.11 stopped receiving mails. In console.log I find this message:

It happened a mail 78. So I deleted the corresponding mail from the server and another similar looking one as well. Now the problem happened downloaden mail 76, which of course was a different mail than the one which caused the error at first. I then created a new account in mail.app which downloads from the same mail account and the problem happens there as well.
    It is a POP account.
I then tested what's happening if I create a new user in Mac OS X and use Mail.app in the new account. This works.
So the problem is limited to my user account and there to all mail accounts going to the same POP server/user.
Do you have any ideas what could cause this behaviour and how I can solve it?
    Bye

Welcome to the forums Oliver... good work at narrowing the problem down so far!
Try dragging this file to the Desktop and reboot...
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Might also pay to clean caches, I use Applejack, but there are many. The log makes me think cache especially.

  • Please, can somebody read my console log and tell if this repeating message is an error?

My cursor has been moving erratically and I was told that it could be because of a software error.  I was told to check my console log for errors but it all looks like hyroglyphics to me.  Please, can somebody tell me if you see a probelm or error message?

  • Console app "All Messages" goes silent

On my iMac G5 running 10.5.3, the "All Messages" display of the Console application has gone blank. Or rather, it doesn't show history, only messages from the moment I start the app. I can find messages in several of the contributing logs, such as system.log (using the app), but "All Messages" only shows messages logged while the app is up.
Is this the new "how it's supposed to work"? Is there some setting that makes it do this that I can unset?

It might be that your asl.db database is corrupt. That's a database used by the ASL framework, which is Apple's logging infrastructure and includes things like syslogd.
That database is located in /var/log, so you could try to delete it and have the system recreate it. Here are some command line steps that would do that:
    1. sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.syslogd.plist
    2. sudo rm -f /var/log/asl.db
    3. sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.syslogd.plist
    4. Restart your computer
The first command stops syslogd, which is one of the main processes responsible for logging. The second command removes the (possibly) corrupt database. The third command restarts syslogd. Step #4 might not be strictly necessary for things to start working again in your Console app, but upon boot up, your system will recreate the asl.db database.
Please note: always be careful when removing files from system directories, and take what you read in these discussion boards with a grain of salt. If you don't feel comfortable in the Terminal, for example, it's better to ask for alternate solutions than to perform tasks that you are not accustomed to.

    Hi, wbracken ,
As known, there are 2 different questions I raised.
Regarding the reply for the second one (Nothing to do with Chinese), I noticed there are several similar issues found in this forum, and it seems no response could solve my that problem. The related methods and classes were also well check, as well as the parameters put.
Any way, your reponse was appreciated.
    Thank you for the help.

  • Console Logs, what they are and what the messages mean

I wonder if there is a resource somewhere that describes each of the logs in Console and what they and the messages in them mean. Some of them are self-explanatoty, others are not.
