Const not allowed in global variable definitions?

Can someone tell me why the compiler complains when I do this:
const int MY_CONST = 100;
char *myStr[MY_CONST];
This is being done outside of a function, as I want myStr to be a global variable.
I get an error saying the initializer must be constant. I've tried this with other compilers, and they don't complain. Any ideas?
Thanks.

In C a variable of type int remains a variable, even if the const keyword prevents it is modifiend during program life. Given this, C does not permit to use it in a array definition since it is not a "constant". As far as I know C++ does permit this declaration.

  • Not allow changes to table definition

    Hi all,
         I need not to allow any changes to a specific custom table definition. I'm looking for something similar to the "lock editor" in se38 applied to SE11. Can anybody help me ?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hello Gianluca,
    When you have created the table and the required entries have been made ..change the data browser/table maintainance view attribute in the 'Delivery and maintenace tab 'to either  'Display/Maintenance allowed with restrictions' or 'Display or maintenace not allowed' according to the requirement.
    hope this will resolve your issue.

  • Why string arrays not allow in shared variables?

    I'm changing a program to replace some global variables with shared variables.  The need for an executable is the reason the globals are being replaced with SV's.  At least one of the variables is a 2 diminsion array of strings.  Under the 'data type' drop down list on the shared variable properties there is no option for an array of strings among the 28 posibilities.  Any way this can be accomplished?  I'm using version 8.0
    thanks, Mike

    Nick, I am attempting your solution.  I upgraded to 8.5, created a custom control as a 2 diminsional array and made it a shared variable.  it works fine in uncompiled mode but when the programs are made executables the array info is not passed.  Now I have to say I find the whole compile process with Labview pretty confusing so I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong in that procedure or I am simply misunderstanding this whole data passing concept on some fundemental level. .  I have attempted several different compile property setting under the "Source Files" page.  Both the write and read programs are in one project along with the custom control and the shared variable.  I compile two applications using the write and read vi's as startup files and have included the custom control and the shared variable in the "always included" area.  I've tried including the last two files or not including them in the compile and it makes no difference.  Setting the variable as 'single process or  'network published'  makes no difference either.

  • How to create a global variable in forms 6i

    How to create a global variable in forms 6i

    :GLOBAL.my_var := 15; Well, this statement is not correct! Global variables
    stores a character string of up to 255 characters in
    length. Thus, valid statement for Khurram example
    is:
    :GLOBAL.my_var := TO_CHAR(15);
    or
    :GLOBAL.my_var := '15';
    But numeric values are implicitly converted by oracle so there's nothing in fact wrong with the statement...
    :GLOBAL.my_var := 15;

  • Global variable in BR

    Hi,
    I have created one global variable (run time prompt) in which Budget admin will pass the scenario member parameter and I have also created a local run time prompt in one rule(which will pick up the scenario member from the input form POV with which the rule attached to) and inside the rule I am checking one condition that if the global variable value is equal to the local variable, then it will execute one calculation.
    As I want that the modify priviledge to change the value of global variable will be only with Budget Admin, so I have defined that at the time of Global variable creation. I chose Member from scenario dimension with the default value 'Budget'.
    I have hidden the local variable in input form. I have set 'run on save' with the 'Use Members on Data form' and 'Hide' option. The default value for local variable is also 'Budget'.
    As I have not hidden the global variable, so at save, pop up coming for the global variable. My problem is that, if I do not hide the global variable, then other user can modify the value, so my purpose is defeated.Otherwise rule is running ok.
    And If I hide the variable, then error is coming "The following value is not valid for the run time prompt it is entered for: ."
    Not understanding what is missing here. Can you please suggest the relevant solution/work around...
    Thanks & Regards.

    Hi John,
    Thanks for the reply and suggestion. But,actually my purpose was to match the budget-admin's scenario with the user-input form's scenario (and depending upon that we will pick up other member intersections and do the calculation for those combination only. So, two set of BR execution seperately will not solve our problem.
    Meanwhile, I tried hardcoding the global variable for debugging, keeping only the local variable picking value from input form. Now getting error that value is not valid for prompt as below---
    "The following value is not valid for the run time prompt it is entered for: ."
    Is my local variable not picking any value from input form....
    Can you please put some light on the issue?
    Thanks & Regards.

  • Apex 3.2 - Global Variables loosing value!

    Hello Everyone,
    I am using Oracle Apex version 3.2. I am using global variables in my queries.
    I found that some times but not always these global variables loosing their
    value. How I can resolve this issue?
    All replies will be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your replies.
    -Parveen

    Hi, thanks for your answer.
    The king of caché I was talking about is something like this:
    * I get a table record (rowtype) from a query accesing the table by PK.
    * I store the value of my PK and the record I got in PL/SQL and go back to the app.
    * Then, if I need to get another record from my table accesing by PK I compare the PK value I got in memory:
    - It is the same value: return the record (in this way I don't have to query my table).
    - It isn't the same value: query the table with the new value and store the record and the PK value.
    It is easy to do this in applications like Forms or .NET, but can I do it with APEX?
    Thanks.

  • Using built-in with global variables

    I am trying to setup built-in source code control for LabVIEW. It seems to be OK except in one case:
    Is it possible to use built-in with global variables ?
    VIs that use a global variable are supposed to be updated automatically when global variable is modified but what happen when VIs are checked-in ? LabVIEW cannot updated them. Is it necessary to check out all VIs before modifying global variable ? This is not convenient if global variable is used in more than 100 VIs !
    Is there another solution ? Can Perforce resolve this problem ?
    Thanks for your help !
    David

    You can still use and update global variables while they are checked in to SSC. The default values will still be saved in SSC but they can still be modified and read by other vi's.

  • Slider - setting via global variables

    Dear friends. Is there any possibility to change the "maximum value" at the slider module externally, using with the global variable?
    I am programming the communication with TSA syringe pump and I need to change the range of charging rate according the used diameter of the syringe. I can prepare six different sliders for each diameter, but it is too inconvenient. Do you anybody have any idea? I tested put the variable to maximum value at the slider module field, but only a number was possible.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    What version of DASYLab are you using?
    My slider module with DASYLab 12 allows a Global Variable for the Min and Max, and it changes while running.
    One way to tell if a Global Variable is supported... right click in the parameter field.

  • Timeline. How does (or does not) update global variables?

    Hello All,
    I am having problems to understand how a timeline updates values. In my case the timeline is supposed to change an index within a second always by incrementing it by one or decrementing by one. Basically I am trying to create a mosaic of images that when I press left key all the columns move to left and when I press right key all the columns move to right.
    To do this I have a deltaX constant that defines the translation.
    Then I have a global tracker initialized to 0 and then udated +1 if move to right, -1 if move to left.
    The Timeline is:
    public var tracker: Number = 0;
    var thumbnails: ImageView[] = bind for (column in [0..appModel.CATALOG_COLUMNS + 1]) {
                    for (row in [1..appModel.CATALOG_ROWS]) {
                        def imageView: ImageView =  ImageView {
                                    image: bind catalogData.dataAt(row, column)
                                    x:  bind (column - 1)*catalogData.maxThumbnailWidth + column*xSpacing
                                    y:  bind ySpacing + (row - 1) * (catalogData.maxThumbnailHeight + ySpacing)
                                    translateX: bind tracker*deltaX
                                    transforms:  bind [
                                        Rotate {
                                            angle: bind direction * rotation
                                            pivotX: bind imageView.x + imageView.boundsInLocal.width / 2
                                            pivotY: bind imageView.y + imageView.boundsInLocal.height / 2
        override public function create(): Node {
            return Group {
                        content: bind thumbnails
    public function rotateAndTranslateToRight(): Void {
            direction = 1;
            translateAndRotateTimeline.stop();
            translateAndRotateTimeline.play();
        public function rotateAndTranslateToLeft(): Void {
            direction = -1;
            translateAndRotateTimeline.stop();
            translateAndRotateTimeline.play();
        var translateAndRotateTimeline = Timeline {
            def initialValueTracker = tracker;
                    keyFrames: [
                        KeyFrame {
                            time: 0s
                            values: [
                                 rotation => 0,
                                 tracker => initialValueTracker
                        KeyFrame {
                            time: 1s
                            values: [
                                rotation => 360 tween Interpolator.LINEAR,
                                tracker => initialValueTracker + direction tween Interpolator.LINEAR
                }The problem is that if I first move to right the Timeline works correctly and tracker goes from 0 to 1 in one second, therefore I see a translation to right of tracker*deltaX pixels. So far so good.
    Then if I move to left, I am expecting the Timeline to change tracker from 1 to 0 in one second, but really it is changing tracker from 0 to -1... which of course messes up my translation to left.
    I thought Timeline updates global variables (define outside the Timeline in the context of the class the Timeline is defined) during the transition, but apparently from my observation it doesn't.
    Or maybe I am not defining correctly the Timeline itself and/or the tracker variables?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply... but it didn't help me that much in finding the workaround. I wrote a simpler example to prove the point that can be easily copied and pasted and run. The example draw a circle and for every right key it should move the circle to right of a deltaX number of pixel. If left key is pressed then the circle should move to left of a deltaX number of pixels. The code is:
    import javafx.stage.Stage;
    import javafx.scene.Scene;
    import javafx.scene.shape.Circle;
    import javafx.scene.paint.Color;
    import javafx.scene.input.KeyEvent;
    import javafx.scene.input.KeyCode;
    import javafx.animation.Timeline;
    import javafx.animation.KeyFrame;
    import javafx.animation.Interpolator;
    var deltaX: Number = 70;
    var direction: Number = 1;
    var tracker: Number = 0;
    var circle: Circle;
    var translate = Timeline {
        def initialValueTracker = tracker;
                keyFrames: [
                    KeyFrame {
                        time: 0s
                        values: [
                            tracker => initialValueTracker
                    KeyFrame {
                        time: 1s
                        values: [
                            tracker => initialValueTracker + direction tween Interpolator.LINEAR
    Stage {
        title: "Application title"
        scene: Scene {
            width: 900
            height:500
            content: [
                circle = Circle {
                    centerX: 100,
                    centerY: 100,
                    translateX: bind tracker*deltaX
                    radius: 40
                    fill: Color.BLACK
                    onKeyPressed: function (e: KeyEvent): Void {
                        if (e.code == KeyCode.VK_RIGHT) {
                            direction = 1;
                            translate.stop();
                            translate.play();
                        } else if (e.code == KeyCode.VK_LEFT) {
                            direction = -1;
                            translate.stop();
                            translate.play();
    circle.requestFocus();I understand how KeyFrame works. However the final value I'd like to be the initial value for next key press. I also tried to assign explicitely the final value to the tracker variable at the end of the timeline, but next time timeline still picks up the initial value 0 of tracker.
    Thanks.

    i m getting the following error
    java.sql.BatchUpdateException: ORA-01027: bind variables not allowed for data definition operations
    can any1 help me with this.

    Can you explain what you are trying to do from a business perspective?
    If you are creating a view, it doesn't make sense to pass bind variables to that DDL statement. The view definition itself is going to have to end up with hard coded date values there. So what possible benefit is there to using bind variables?
    As an aside, if you are using bind variables and you have DATE columns, you really want to pass in the proper data type (i.e. setDate or setTimestamp rather than setString). Otherwise, Oracle has to do implicit string to date conversion, which depends on the session's NLS settings, which is likely to be different on different client machines and lead to all sorts of odd errors and behaviors down the line.
    Are you trying to build a view that takes parameters? If so, there are a few options for that sort of thing.

  • Can not use Global Variable in Event Structure

    I am using LabVIEW 2009.
    In my LabView project I have a Boolean Global variable called EStop. I can read and write the Global variable. If I double click on the Global variable, it takes me to EStop.vi which includes a Text Button. EStop.vi is part of my Project.
    In one of my VIs, I have an Event Structure. If I go to one of the Event Handlers in that Event Structure and right click and then select Add Event Case, I get a list of possible events. But that list does not include EStop or an EStop events.
    I want to Add an Event Case for EStop: Value Changed.
    Why can't I Add events to an Event Case that include events on Global Variables like value changed?

  • Function module Global variables not cleared from memory?

    Hi,
    This is may be simple & stupid question ( after posting  4242 posts ):)

    This is code in the function module.

        " Here this internal contains the previous entry
        clear i_yatt71.
      endloop.
    This function module is called 25 times in a minute.
    My problem is this
    For example : 1st tranmission is called this fm with 50 records,
    and 2nd tranmission is called fm with 10 records.
    My results are showing
    last record in the 1st transmission is still on the memory while calling 2nd transmission.  ( Here in int table I_YATT71 still contains the 1st transmission's last records during the 2nd tranmission call)
    As per my knowledge if each time calls comes in to fm all gloabl variables get cleared. but some how this not happening.
    Anybody come across this scenario.
    PS. I know i need to use clear statement within the loop as first statement.

    You must understand that when calling a FM, you load the entire function group into memory. IF there are global variables, then they are "alive" for the entire duration of the program execution. Meaning if you call the function numerious times, or even if you call another function within the same function group, the functions still have access to that same global variable space, so it must always be cleared manually by the developer at the required points.  You can not rely on the runtime to clear the global variables at the end of the function call.  So you should clear all you globals as the first operation in your function module call, if that is what is required.
    Is this clear?
