Constant fan & Less heat

I don't know if I have to complain or not.
The replaced mbp is bettet than the previous one.
However, the fan on the left hand side near magsafe is running all the time. Well, it doesn't create any noise if I lift the laptop up with my hand. It create wooooooooooong sound as soon as I put it on the desk. It seems some sort of vibration...
This means fan is running all the time, isn't it?
Obviously, it doesn't create much heat on the surface and I can put it on my lap easier than before.
Mine is 31st week manufactured & 17inch 2.16/1gb ram.
What do you think?

Yeah mine does that but I have a 5400 rpm hdd. And mine is 1.83. I think that this is normal. I would rather have my fan running than have the whine. But my fan is not as loud as the whine so I really don't have to worry about it. I am not sure but I think that is all in spec. Don't forget this is a thiner laptop than most pcs, so it needs to vent more as it does not has a big of fans.

  • Laptop consuming battery fast and a constant flow of heat from CPU

    Hello to all.
I'm having similar problems like this one, here using a Dell Vostro 3460, maybe is just some non-windows OS unfriendly hardware. Battery last like 5 or 6 hours on Windows, and just like 2 or 2 and a half on Arch. Will remove battery until there is a solution, and use the laptop only on my workplace.
I have to admit that, I don't know how to disable the discrete video card, I just blacklisted nouveau.
LCD is not hot, there is just constant flow of heat by the ventilation gap (maybe the CPU dissipator?) brightness settings are ok. On windows that heat flow sometimes just stops.
    Any help is very appreciated.
    Thanks.

    @lahwaacz,
Could you point me to documentation regarding bugs/problems with laptop-mode tools? I'm using that right now and it has always worked pretty well but I'm currently seeing higher temperatures (~10C higher on average) and trying to figure out why.
My fan operates continually but not, I think, very aggressively. But it has always done that so I assume it is normal for this laptop. (Have no idea really but it doesn't seem out of the way - it is a laptop, after all...)
I don't know anything about fan control, my laptop controls fan speed automatically, I can't even get current fan speed.
The main problem with laptop-mode-tools is that it's very huge, and the bigger the program is, the slower is the execution. Another problem is that it's connected to both battery and AC adapter ACPI events (see /etc/acpi/events/lm_{ac_adapter,battery}). On my laptop, those events are sent at the same time, resulting in running laptop-mode-tools twice. Most people once configure laptop-mode-tools to their liking and their hardware, so I think there is no need for such an extensive software like laptop-mode-tools, if something simpler does the same (or better) job.
Also laptop-mode-tools can conflict with pm-utils (which are installed on many systems as dependency for some packages):

  • Constant Fan Noise from Hard Drive

My power book runs with a constant 'fan' like noise from the hard drive (front left of pd)
My friend has same machine and has No sound,
checked with display models in Apple Store (ear right necxt to pb) - No sound
I have had this low level noise from new.
Anyone else have the same problem.
    John

    hello there!
When I upgraded to 1.4.0 and I notice that ear piercing noise and it was quite annoying. I called Apple and they advised me to look into the activity monitor. And YES, it ws the anti virus that came with .mac that 1.4.2 for some reason did not like and the process was running for such a long time consuming the resources including of course HD. I removed the anti virus (which at this point was useless) and the machine was just wonderful again.
I think what I may say is that you may want to look for a process (using the activity monitor) which is eating the cpu alive - if you can remove it the better, else try to deal with. Good luck - an OSX convert!

  • Constant fan noise on macbook pro

Hello, my macbook pro (mid 2010 model, 13 inch, 2.4 ghz intel core duo 2 running Mountain lion) is experiencing constant fan activity at very high speed. The CPU however is only used at 9% of its capabilities top. The problem occured after a freeze in adobe Lightroom, since then, the fan noise start as soon as the computer starts (except if i press some keys before i turn it on for some reason, the noise would come back if i shut down the computer and restart it, or simply close it). I'm dully aware that it is normal that the fan is constantly working, but not usually at such high speed (top speed of the system), I checked all the major solutions offered on the net so far with no success (reset SMC, reset Pram, checked if i had some printer activity on the waiting list, checked the activity monitor for any particular demanding activity or tasks and finally i tried to run an apple harware test to see if some temperature probes are broken on the motherboard, however my computer for some reason is not taken care of...).
I also would like to mentionned that i change the original hard-drive not long ago for a hybrid harddrive (seagate momentus XT), yet the problem did not start after the change.
if you do not think of any solutions, you could maybe tell me if its problematic for my computer's fan to run at full speed..
thank you very much for any help you could provide and sorry for the eventual mistakes in english (its not my first language).

Re: Apple Hardware Test. There was no original install disk, as i downloaded mountain lion. While the connection was established to access to Apple hardware test, the test could not run on my mac, the AHT program said that my machine was not supported.
thank you for your diagnostic, it seemed to be a logical explanation, however, thanks to a monitor program i could check that my processor was running under normal temperatures (35°c to 75°c) so at least the temperature informations seems to be correctly assessed by the sensor.

I just received my brand-new 1.67 GHz PowerBook today, as a replacement for a year-old 1.33GHz PowerBook which was stolen from me.
The old 1.33 used to be silent as a graveyard during normal use. But the new 1.67 issues a constant fan noise. It is not very loud, but very noticable and definitely annoying. It is always present from start-up until shut-down, even if I am not running any applications.
Should I return it to Apple? Or are there any tests/fixes I can try?

I have also got one of the latest PowerBooks and the fan noise is more noticeable than my previous 1.5Ghz model, however I wouldn't have even noticed it if I'd not had a previous model.
There have been some other similar postings on these discussion pages.
One of the criticisms of the previous model was that the underneath of the case could get very hot, I believe the fans run more often to cure this problem and in practice the PowerBook runs a lot cooler. It never gets hot, just a bit warm.
The fans still speed up when doing anything intensive, such as playing some of the high definition trailers I downloaded from the quicktime section of this website. Try it yourself and see if the fan noise increases after a short while.

  • Powerbook 12 heat and constant fans

So apparently this is a common issue but there are not many threads on this and no solution at all.
I just wanted to ask other 12 inch Powerbook users.. are the fans on all the time (during basic tasks like web browsing) on your machine... and any solutions??

In response to both authors, mine does the same, but it doesn't stay on all the time. But it does happen say, if I put my laptop on a desk with no air to breathe in between the underside, or when I put it on the couch.
When used on my lap, which I shouldn't be doing, but anyway, it will vary.
What I've done to solve the problem is to buy a laptop cooler and it really does work. It actually works better than the PowerBook's internal fans because for one, it doesn't generate heat (when my fans are on, it's because of the heat issue, but at the same time, it seems to circulate the heat as well, making it an infinite loop-- pun intended!!).
And with the laptop cooler, yes those fans are on constantly, but the laptop does not heat up.
I first tried Targus's laptop cooler (via OfficeMax) but found it aesthetically unpleasing, even though it is similar in color (aluminum colored plastic).
The one I ended up buying was a Micro Innovations laptop cooler from RadioShack (please don't laugh people), because it was black and matched my desk top--as opposed to the silver Targus one--and the best part is it's adjustable, so it works with my 12-inch PowerBook and my old Pismo.

  • Fans and heat

i have started noticing that my laptop (a305-s6898 satellite) has been getting really hot on the left half - front. i believe that the fan is still working because it is cool near the vent openings on the bottom. it is an uneven heat around the wrist area (on both sides of the touchpad) with the left being hotter than the right. the laptop has shut off before...and i've gotten the dreaded blue screen!! usually it is when i am watching videos. any help/suggestions would be appreciated

You should try to defragment your drive more often.  The more you run it, the less time it will take to complete, and the drive will perform more efficiently.  Clean up temp files and the registry using programs such as CCleaner and Glary Utilities(both free programs).  I run these at least once a week on all of my computers.  Then Defragment weekly either using the stock windows tool, or a programs such as Defraggler.
When I bought my Satellite M305, the system was sluggish, and the HDD ran very warm.  The previous owner obviously never defragmented the hard drive(or knew how to keep the drive clean).  My first defrag run lasted several days.  After cleaning it up, removing viruses, and a few weeks of defragmenting regularly, it runs much faster, and defrags in minutes.

  • Constant fan running

New Presario CQ57 302A windows 7 . Fan runs constant, low noise, no heat. Is this ok or should it be quiet.

Have you tries a SMC reset?

  • Fun with fans and heat - post your temps

Well, after using the command to double-load my MBP, and after turning off all the loud machines in my bedroom, I finally got my MBP's fans to really get going. They make a very faint noise, but they were belching out firy air, as my MBP. My macbook pro runs at a somewhat reasonable 65-72C (156F average or so) when I run reasonable applications like Safari, iTunes, Adium, and Preview at once, loading the cores less than 10% each. The bottom is quite hot in the obvious places but the keyboard and palmrest are cool. The fans are not spinning in any way that I can detect at this temperature. I use Hardware Monitor 3.6 to test my CPU core's heat.
When other people load their cores, do they get super high heat? I get up to 90-100C even, and the fans get spinning. However the CPU core temp drops like lightning down to 70 seconds after I close the terminal windows and end the suffering. I don't know how normal this is, what other people's core fully loaded temperatures are, but I would like to.
Test core temps with this: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24043
You may need to run http://macbricol.free.fr/coreduotemp/ this software first.
Then, load your cores by opening 2 instances of the terminal and running this line of code: yes> /dev/null
This all isn't fair. I tried to make my G4 12" get hot with this terminal command, and the hottest I got was 136F, while my Macbook Grill is running at over 200F.

why have ya CPU's running with nothing with this yes> /dev/null when ya could be running seti@home or this http://distributed.net running something usefull that uses all ya avalible CPU cycles... and still at the same time testing the CPU temps...

  • My computer is all of sudden making a constant "fan" noise

For some reason my computer started today with a sound like a fan is constantly going.
Before this sound happened, my computer would not turn on. I proceeded to follow the steps (which I have to say is a royal pain in the butt to do) and yes, it finally turned on. But now I have this worry some noise as if it is over heating??
To further make matters even more confusing is now the battery indicator in the top right corner has an x in it and my battery charge indicator lights will not show up to tell me if my computer battery is fully charged AND my plug in cord's light does not turn on! The latter two problems just showed up AFTER my computer started up. The lights were before I had to turn the computer on the strange way. But now my computer is acting as though it doesn't recognize the battery! (It is the same battery!)

I checked into your link and followed the directions to a "T", but still no luck! My Macbook Pro is brand new, I just bought it last November. I do not believe my battery is no good since everything was working properly except the fact that it wouldn't turn on. I had a full charge on my battery and my plug in light WAS showing green. During the time when I was attempting to turn on my computer, I noticed the plug in indicator light had turned orange. Now I have no light on it at all. Also, I am still able to use my computer if it is unplugged.
    My problems continue to be:
    1) Sounds like my fan is continually on and will not turn off.
    2) My battery charge lights do not turn on.
    3) The battery indicator icon (top right corner) shows an "x" in the middle of it.
    4) My plug-in indicator light will not light up.
If my problem truly is the battery, what are my options? I don't even know how to get to the battery!

  • Apple 20-inch with a 12-inch Powerbook = Constant Fan

Just picked up a 20-inch display for use with a 12-inch Powerbook.. I also have an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse that I use.. The fan runs constantly when the powerbook is connected to the Apple Display.. Can anyone confirm if this is normal or if I should be worried.. Thanks

Just received a 20" ACD yesterday. I also purchased a Targus Chill Pad (USB-powered fan stand) having read that 12" PBs run hot with 20" ACDs, and I really like the combination. One possible solution to the heat generation might be to avoid using the USB and FW hubs on the ACD - I don't have mine plugged in and my PB has remained nice and cool - same temps. as before hooking up the ACD (~125 F for the graphics processor, according to Temperature Monitor). I haven't heard the PB's fan go on once, and I can barely hear the fans of the Chill Pad - I'd recommend that as a 25 dollar solution to people experiencing the overheating. I don't know if the lack of hub usage is keeping the heat down, but that may also be something others want to try.

  • Much better- and question about constant fan noise

i couldn't start anew thread a few minutes ago. I replied to 2 threads, then the startanew thread iconmagically appeard! I am not making it up.
any way- i posted a while back about noise. I thought it may be the hard drive. But definatley it sounds like the fan(s) in my MBP dual core
my MPB was silen when i first bough it. then a few month in it got noisy. Now thw fans are on all the time.
anyone else with a MPB that is just noisy? this *****! macs are almost always quiet. this is annoying acually. and it is non stop! i can't recal a moment when the fns were not winding like tiny air craft jet engines! LOL wel, it's not that funy actually.
the noise does change in pitch on occasion. sort of like they slow down a tiny bit. other wise they just hum away.
I had a G-4 I mac- SILENT! then a dual G-5 tower- it was quest until it roared up on a task, then it roared with power then got quiet again.
but this tiny mpbis just noisy!
Well, i hoope it is the fans, not the HD. It prettty much sounds like fans, and constant.
but considering theroom temp is abou 68 in here, whywould the fans be on? and non stop?
we live in a cold climate, so it's not a 100 weather.
any help with the fans and perhaps a test or a way to turn them down? does my system think the core is hot?
    thanks for any help

only about 13% is a peak ap. nothing major, nor a lot of stuff. but nothing consuming 30 40 or more percent or anything. Nothing running except safar in this case, activity monitor.nothingexcessive like 10 aps , whihc i have done in the past as we know the macs can handle it
well, nothing seems out of the ordinary.
I included a pic from that FAN CONTROL AP- well was going to, but not sure how.
any way my stats from it are:
base speed, 1500 rpm (on both actually)
    ower threshhold 122F
    upper 176F
current temp at that moment was 101F
can someone compare their fans to mine and their temp- i assume it is the cpu core temp.
any way, not sure what is a safe range, nor why my fans are running non-stop.
just noisy? but like i said they do occilate a little ans slow and the hum gets deeper then they go back to normal which is a slightly higher pitch.
as for that iStat pro ap. i opened it and it just made my application dock bar flash then the dock came back. The Istat pro didn't open.
Um- it looks like a widget. I may have taken my widget ap of some time ago. I hve yahoo widgets on. but not sure how to get that istat to work. I can't even recall the name of the apple widget program.
thanksfor help on tracking this noise down-
are any of your guys's fans really noisy? is this common? mine is just non-stop but if my settings are off or if there is areason, then I can adjust it from there. just want to know what the "normal range" or operation of the fans are. but man they are noisy for a mbp. and they WERE QUIET when i first got this laptop.
    thanks again

  • Lacie 500GB External Hard Drive Fan speed / heat issues?

I have a 500gb Lacie Mini hard drive with the 1394/usb2.0 hub and for some reason when it is connected to my mac mini in the office, it works totally fine, doesnt spin really fast or anything. When I take it home and hook it up to my other mac mini, after 10-15 minutes the fan starts to blow at full speed on the Lacie. The mac mini at home is from March 2005 and its a 1.66 Core Duo, and the one at the office is from March 2007, and is also a 1.66 Core Duo, both with 2gb of ram.
I have noted at the bottom of my home mac mini is very warm to the touch after feeling between the drive and the computer, but it seems odd to me that both computers dont get just as hot considering they are virtually identical aside from the build date. Has anyone else experienced this problem with their Lacie mini drive? The fan spins so high on the drive that its annoying to even use it, and I'd like to take care of it if theres a remedy.
    Thanks!

I agree, the link you posted is strangely inaccurate. I have been trying to post the attempts on this link: http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=109630#109630 but as you can tell I have been frustrated with the whole process. The posts may be confusing because they are step by step. The lacie drive is loud under the mini but not when it is by itself.
As of now the test seem to be inconclusive. It is so strange that I would be convinced if someone told me the fan in the lacie has a temperature sensor inside. But the only thing I can come up with is that the mini gets hot on the bottom, while the lacie gets hot on top. Their combined heat seems to be too much for the lacie's fan to cool. I will also mention that I have fan control software installed on the mini, but this doesn't seem to have any effect as I am not changing the settings during my tests.
The fan having a temperature sensor is just crazy... I removed the fan from the lacie (fan still plugged in) and set up the stack. The lacie bottom was removed for this test. The lacie fan never turned on, and the drive increased in temperature that I felt was too hot. This is where sensing strips would assist in further data.
So here is my next step: Since the fan didn't turn on when the lacie bottom was removed, it seems that the open back and open bottom (the back and bottom is one piece) was enough to keep the sensor from turning on the fan. But as said before, I felt the drive was still too hot. So maybe the lacie case needs more ventilation. Two ways I have thought to do this:
----- cut the fan one large hole instead of a bunch of little ones, allowing more air out.
    - or -
----- cut the bottom vents out (maybe not all of them) to allow more air intake.
I think the first one would solve the problem, but I don't currently have the time to do it. I am going to cut the fan hole first, once I get the time.
I will tell you that the lacie drive is mounted closest to the top of the case. I have thought of purchasing some thermal sensing strips to determine what is hot and when; haven't yet.
AndyO, you said everything right except one part... the mini's air-intake is the vents on the bottom, and the air is obviously pushed out the back by the horizontal fan (there is a special plastic mold that the fan sits horizontally in). Which you would lead us to believe that the mini would heat up with the lacie underneath, but I haven't noticed any drastic changes in the mini fan speed or temperature. Instead the lacie drive gets hot or at least the fan goes crazy.
Hope this helps, I'll let you know when I get the scalpel (really sharp knife) out.

  • MacBook Fans Loud - Heat is HOT - Processor almost 90% Free! What gives?

    Hiya
I have had my Macbook since boxing day, December 26, 06 and I LOVE IT!
The only thing is that these days, when I am not running anything that uses a lot of power, like Flash 8 or Photoshop, my Macbook starts to heat up and fans go to max almost and stays that way for a while...
    I took some photos:

I was only running Adium, Safari and iTunes and my fans were fully on at 6200 RPM and the heat was 50°C!!!
I hate this heat... What is up?
