Videos in 720p and in 1080p don't seem HD on my 13" rMBP

Is this normal?

If you have contacts that are not in the iCloud group they will not sync with iCloud, and hence will not sync to your PC.  The remedy is to copy or move all your contacts to the iCloud group.  You can't manage contact groups on your phone, however without an app.  You'll either have to manually re-enter the non-iCloud contacts into the iCloud group or look at using an app like Speed Names, ABContacts or similar to move the contacts on your phone between groups.

I'm trying to isolate skin with a secondary layer and am successful.  I want to blur the skin to reduce blemishes but when doing so the blur and degrain sliders don't seem to have an effect. Can I apply a gaussian blur fx on just that secondary? Can't seem to figure this out.  Is there a better way to smooth skin?

Here's an Adobe help page for isolating skin with suggestion on the use of the blur slider also:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/speedgrade/using/apply-secondary-color-corrections.html
And here's one of the original creators of Iridas/SpeedGrade, Patrick Palmer, a six minute vid-tut on using secondaries (specifically in CS6 but this hasn't changed):
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-speedgrade-cs6/secondary-color-correction-in-speedgrade-cs 6/
I'd note, the "blur" and "denoise" tools on the Secondary tab are more about smoothing the keying of the secondary ... they apply a bit of blur or de-noising to make the secondary smoother and cover over the odd pixel or three or four that don't "fit" the key of the secondary in the middle of something you're aiming for.
In current SpeedGrade, I'd try using the Guassian Blur (Range) effect, and sample a good range of the skin tones.
And a lot of people use Red Giant's "Cosmo" plug-in over in AfterEffects or Premiere Pro ... it's a tool designed specifically for working skin tones, dealing with blemishes, wrinkles, spots, and such.

    Hi Ingrid
Thanks a lot for the response.
That parameter is right now set to "0".
But on reading the documentation for that parameter, it says you should change it only if SAP recommends you to do so.
We checked in our other systems as well and all that is set to "0" as well.
Will that be Ok to change the parameter to a different value?
If yes, what is the value to be used?
    Thanks a lot

  • I updated to Firefox 4 and now I don't seem to have the Mozilla weather program, which I had before. Can't remember the name of the weather program.

I can't remember the name of the Mozilla weather program that was on my computer, but it's no longer there now that I've updated to Firefox 4.0.1. I don't know how to get it back!

  • Help and Mail search don't seem to be working properly in Mountain Lion.

When i search for a keyword in mail and specify 'Entire Message', I don't get any results. Also, the OS X help function is not giving me any results because it says that it can't connect to the internet. The internet is connected and working normally in all other applications.

Regarding Mail, the entire message search uses Spotlight to find results.  Is your Spotlight icon (magnifying glass) in the dock still indexing, or otherwise corrupted?
You may wish to just add and then remove your main hard drive from the Spotlight privacy pane.  This will cause Spotlight to re-index the whole drive, and once that's done (it may take a few hours) the searches would work.
I'm not sure on Help... Any chance you're behind some sort of proxy server?

  • Time Machine and Time Capsule don't seem to work well together?

    Reposted.
I get the feeling there are some serious problems with the combination of Time Machine and Time Capsule.
This is extremely disappointing, as the idea of a centralized backup device on the network (instead of disks attached to each and every computer we have running Leopard) seemed like such a good idea and a good way to supplement our tape-based backup that takes place with Retrospect.
In reality, it's a disaster on both Intel and PowerPC systems. All systems and the Time Capsule are fully up to date with software updates from Apple. I have two 1TB Time Capsule units. It goes something like this:
    1. I have a few systems (mainly Intel) that work perfectly with the Time Capsule. There are no complaints and no issues at all. These systems just quietly run their backups as they should. They are the definite minority--maybe one or two have worked properly.
    2. I have some systems that complain from time to time (mainly PowerPC) but will back up with a little encouragement. These too are the minority.
    3. And finally, I have systems that are nothing but pain. These are both Intel and PowerPC systems. They are also the majority of the systems I have. The most common problem is sudden loss of the credentials needed to access the Time Capsule hardware--a user will be going along about their business when the Mac OS asks for the Time Capsule user name and password--after it's already been supplied and backups have been running. This should simply never ever happen.
Another charming behavior I've seen is corruption of the sparse disk image file that each computer creates on the Time Capsule. Time Machine will complain that it can't perform the backup, and examining the disk image file with Disk Utility shows it to be severely damaged. Turning off Time Machine, deleting the corrupted sparse image file, and starting over fixes it. For a while.
Finally, there are the machines (again, both Intel and PowerPC) that just can't seem to actually get through the first backup run. They either go so far and can't continue, or never actually manage to get started. I've checked the disks in these computers and found no problem with the hardware or file system. The installations are fresh and fully up to date.
Meanwhile, I have computers running Leopard with directly attached disks configured for use with Time Machine. One is a QuickSilver that isn't even officially supported by Leopard, with a Firewire attached disk. It doesn't skip a beat. The other is an Intel Mac mini being used with Mac OS X Server 10.5.4 and a USB external hard drive. These machines just do their thing, and I never have to babysit them.
These problems with the Time Capsule have been so severe that I've just given up on most of the computers and shut off Time Machine entirely. We have tape backups that run over the week, so it's not a huge loss. But that's not what really made me throw up my hands and say "enough"...no, that was the speed. Even with just one computer backing up to it, the Time Capsule seemed terribly slow. Watching the progress indicator was just painful.
I put in a word about all of this to my independent Apple dealer, and they say I'm definitely not the first to complain about some or all of these problems. In fact, they told me they were going to set up a test lab in their shop to see if they could duplicate these findings. I have no doubt that they can.
There are a total of seven computers backing up to one Time Capsule. They all store maybe ~40GB worth of data including the OS. There are about six computers on the other. Because of the way the network is laid out, the Time Capsule is connected to a Gigabit switch (and that is the only thing it's connected to). It cannot be used as the router, although I know Apple suggests this. The Airport section is disabled--I have no need or desire to use it. Some computers link up at 100 megabits, others at 1 gigabit. There are no network problems--we have no problems moving large amounts of data across the same network to our tape backup machine.
Is anyone else seeing these kinds of problems? Am I doing something wrong or expecting too much from Time Capsule?

I may be on to something. The Time Capsules I have live in a telephone equipment room that is indoors but not directly air conditioned or heated. It doesn't ever get too hot to be comfortable in there--the highest I've ever seen the temperature was 80 degrees (F). Most of the time the temperature is between 60-78 degrees.
I happened to touch one of them the other day while it was in use, and I noticed that the casing was hot to the touch...not dangerously so I suppose, but much hotter than I would have expected.
So I turned a small fan on both Time Capsules and have left it running. And I've noticed that not only do backups seem to complete more quickly, the reliability is also better. I am going to try some of my most troublesome computers once again just to see what happens.
I know there is a fan pointed at the hard drive in the Time Capsule, but I can't see how it does much in the way of cooling things down. In my opinion, it's just surrounded by too many heat producing devices to do much good...after all, not only is there a 7200 RPM hard disk in there, but also a 500MHz Marvell processor and radio set.

I am trying the gnucash application out.  But even though I have installed the gnucash-docs package, gnucash says that it can't find it.  Is this a bug or just me being an old <expletive deleted>?  Where should it find it's docs? And where does gnucash-docs install them?

Geesh....it's been over a year and this is *still* listed as a LOW PRIORITY bug. <- How can a missing dependency, with full documentation in the bug report as to it FIRM and ABSOLUTE requirement be listed as such ? Sigh......
( I am guessing this bug report and thread were on the DEV's "to-do-list" but somehow, over time, been forgotten. Hmmmm, what to do about reminding him ? )

  • What table in the OperationsManagerDW table holds the availability data of an application? Its 4th day of my search in SCOM and i really don't seem to find it at all.

BTW i am using SCOM 2012 R2. If you have the query to extract the availability data from the database, it would be of a great help. Also, i meant database when i said OperationsManagerDW table.

    Hi,
You need following Parameters for example:
    @ManagedEntityMonitorRowId
    @StartDate=
    '2014-05-01 00:00:00'
    @EndDate= '2014-06-01
    00:00:00'
    @DataAggregation= '1'
    @LevelCount= '1'
    @LanguageCode= 'ENU'
To get the ManagedEntityMonitorRowId you can use following SQL Queries on the DWH (You
also can do it with a Inner Join but i'm not that good in T-SQL)
    # MonitorRowID: With this query you can look after the ID based on the MonitorDefaultName
    SELECT *
    FROM [dbo].[vMonitor]
    WHERE MonitorDefaultName = 'AD_Database_and_Log_DBSpace.Monitor'
    # ManagedEntityRowID: With this query you can look after the ID based on the DisplayName of the Entity
    SELECT *
    FROM [dbo].[vManagedEntity]
    WHERE DisplayName LIKE 'DC1'
    # Now you can query for the right ManagedEntityMonitorRowID (For Example)
    SELECT [ManagedEntityMonitorRowId]
    FROM dbo.vManagedEntityMonitor
    WHERE ManagedEntityRowId = '4753' AND MonitorRowId = '1371'
    I hope this help you.
    Cheers,
    Christoph

  • ACR And Vista 64 Don't Seem To Get Along

Using the latest Photoshop CS4, w/all updates, Vista 64 / 32gb RAM. I start w/an empty cache, and a clean, separate internal scratch disk of sufficient capacity.
Using ACR, open a folder on my desktop, wait until all the thumbnails are rendered, (the little arrow in the LLH corner stops spinning), select the raw files to open.
ACR stops responding. I have to wait a minute or so, or close ACR and re-open.
I can try to open 2 files, or 10 files, with the same results.
I can't find any settings that affect this behavior. Any ideas ? TIA, Ira

Sadly I have these issues also. The re-indexing of the phone takes so long that it almost never completes during my short drive between home, work & most places I go. Consequently Sync is almost always re-indexing my iPhone. Also about every 10th time I plug the phone in via USB Sync detects a "new" device which is very annoying. I've tried every solution to the bluetooth audio skipping that I've found and nothing makes any difference. I've gone so far as to un-pair the iPhone & Sync (on both ends), pull Sync's fuse to forcibly reboot it, reboot the iPhone, repair and setup bluetooth streaming. Even this rather draconian series of steps didn't stop the skipping. Oddly enough using the phone with Sync via bluetooth works beautifully.
The issues with USB I'm pretty sure are on the Sync end. The bluetooth issues I'm pretty sure are on Apple's end. The most frustrating thing is that Apple doesn't even seem to acknowledge that the skipping problem exists.

  • My facebook and twitter app don't seem to be working..

they are small and centered and small plus they aren't responding. I have re-installed it several times but still it won'twork. I have no idea what to do please help

    Hey melissadiiaazz,
Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far. You have almost exhausted all of the recommended steps, as outlined in this resource:
iOS: An app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702
Some steps you may have not already tried:
    Restart your device
Turn the device off and on.
Update your device software and your apps
Update your device to the latest version of iOS.
    Update your apps:
    1. Open the App Store and tap Updates.
    2. If updates are available, tap Update All.
    3. If asked, enter your Apple ID password. The updates will download and install.
You might need a Wi-Fi connection to update some apps.
    Contact the developer
If you see the issue again, contact the developer of the app for help:
    1. Find the app in the App Store.
    2. Tap the app and tap Reviews.
    3. Tap App Support.

  • Energy and Screen Savers Don't Seem to be Working

I have a 27" iMac (early 2011) running Lion. No matter how long I set the Energy or Screen Savers for, the screen dims after less than five minutes of inactivity then goes into screen-saver mode after another couple minutes.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

    Hi Lloyd,
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
If that doesn't do it, (not on 10.7 to see if it's the same, but older OSX info)...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions,  then move these files to the Desktop.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
(Then Trash the original of these last two, as "moving" them only copies them.)
    Then reboot once more.

  • Are you seeing a colour shift in 720p and 1080p h.264 slideshow exports?

When I export video from Lightroom 3 (or 3.2), I see that 720p and 1080p output can be very different in colour from other resolutions. It's as if my display profile were being ignored when playing back those particular resolutions.
Playback client: Apple's QuickTime Player X on Mac OS X 10.6.4. If I use VLC or QuickTime Player 7, colour is consistent across all export resolutions but is consistently wrong compared with the original photographs. (Again, it's as if the ICC display profile is being ignored.)
Display profile: my display is profiled and the profile is an ICC v4 file but I can reproduce the issue with some v2 profiles, as well.
    AVC vs h.264
One oddity (that might be a peculiarity of QuickTime Player) is that when I view the 720p and 1080p movies, and ask for information about codecs (command-i), QuickTime Player X tells me that these two movies use AVC encoding. For all the other sizes, it says claims h.264. My understanding is that these two are effectively the same thing; on the other hand, it's curious that the two sizes showing different colour from the rest are identified differently. And QuickTime Player 7 claims AVC for all resolutions and always gets the colour wrong.
Is this just a QuickTime Player X bug? It gets colour right for all resolutions except 720p and 1080p, and provides a clue by saying the movie uses the AVC codec? Or is this an encoding issue?
    Other sizes are fine
Exporting and playing back any other h.264 movie size, from 320 pixels right up to 960 pixels, provides perfectly acceptable colour in QuickTime Player X .There's a slight shift compared with the originals but nothing dramatic, and it's consistent across different sizes.
Any thoughts? Can you reproduce the problem?
I've tested this on a bunch of different Macs but they're all running 10.6.4.  Can anyone see this problem? Would anyone like to test on Windows and report back? The results seem to vary wildly depending on your display profile and how far it is from a canned profile so if you really want to be sure of seeing the differences, switch your display to "Wide Gamut RGB" for the playback test, then compare the 720p/1080p files with the rest, including the sRGB reference.
Would anyone like to tell me I'm being a complete idiot and overlooking something blindingly obvious? I won't be upset.
I was just about to post a note on the blog but thought I'd better post something here first. I'll probably ask readers to provide feedback here rather than on the site. I get the feeling that this issue won't be a big deal for most people.
    Some examples for download
I have a zipped collection of single-image slideshows generated by Lightroom at each available resolution, together with a 960-pixel JPEG (sRGB) of that same image to act as a reference. You can download it here (5.9MB). For the moment, you'll probably have to ignore the URL that you see in the slideshows and in the Read Me file—it points to the blog post that I was preparing but which I haven't yet published. I'll do that next so anyone reading the blog will come here and post.
Thanks in advance, and apologies if I'm being dumb about something.
    Update
I've added a 720x480 file that shows the same problem and updated the URLs shown in the movies and the Read Me file.

    Bahi,
just to illustrate what mess this is, I tested for you on Leopard (10.5) and Snow Leopard (10.6) using the same wide gamut monitor. Here are two screenshots from that experiment. I converted the screenshots from my display profile to sRGB to show you what I see and scaled down 50% (this is a 30" behemoth). First Leopard.
You see they are all the same, but different from the sRGB export you provided. The GB sticker is too blue and the tint on the car is wrong. I doubt anybody but a photographer would notice though.
    Next is Snow Leopard:
Here the 320 pixel, the 480 pixel and the 960 pixel image are different from the 720 pixel, the 720p and the 1080p ones. Neither is strictly correct as they are all different from the sRGB display. This is consistent with their being no real color management, just gamma corrections and color space transforms (video is usually not stored as RGB but as YUV, necessitating a transform for display). Annoying, but not much you can do about it.
Just doing some quick googling I came across many mentions of issues such as this. It clearly is just a big mess.

  • Why are Lightroom 4.1 Slideshow Module Export Video 720p and 1080p ending up as Interlaced Video?

In Lightroom 4.1 (Windows 7 64 bit) when I create a slideshow in the Slideshow Module, use Export Video 720p or 1080p, the properties of the export do not agree with the name of the preset suggesting a fundamental discrepancy in what is stated and what is.
The MediaInfo properties readout for this type of export is showing Scan Type = Interlaced and Scan Order = Top Field First. How is this possible for 720p and 1080p which are designations for progressive video (no Fields)? However, the readout will show the expected frame rates, 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 for 720p and 1080p respectively.
I suspect that this is not a misread by MediaInfo since a Mac user shows the same "interlaced" & "upper field first" information using a Mac Video Specs application for the properties readout for the Slideshow Module Export Video 1080p.

The LR slideshow module has had problems since its initial introduction and the issues have not been fixed in LR4.1. There is also an issue of resample artifacts (jaggies) when using portrait orientaion images in a slideshow on Windows platforms.. See this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3793720#3793720
Here's an excerpt from the above thread link:
LR has at least three different implementation versions, concerning this LR Slideshow Module behavior:
                             Stroke Border           Portrait Images
Mac OS:            Causes softness         OK (no resample artifacts)
Windows Vista:  No issues                    Resample artifacts (jaggies)
Windows 7:        Causes softness         Resample artifacts (jaggies)

  • Choosing between 720p and 1080p on Mini connected to Sony HDTV (1920x1080)

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini and a SONY HDTV and had no difficulties at all in hooking them up. I just connected the Mini Display Port to DVI connector which ships with the MAC Mini to a Belkin DVI to HDMI cable (also available from Apple Store) and connected the HDMI to my TV. I switched on the TV, selected the correct HDMI input, then switched on the Mac Mini and could see the picture immediately. I was missing the menu bar at the top so went to SYSTEM PREFERENCES and then DISPLAYS and the OPTIONS tab, and unselected OVERSCAN, and that gave me a perfect picture (slightly smaller than full screen but perfectly adequate as far as I'm concerned).
By default my resoluton was set at 1080p (presumably the Mac detected that the native resolution of my TV is 1080p). The DISPLAYS box shows a number of resolution with a little TV screen icon beside them, as if suggesting those resolutions for use with the Sony. It shows 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. There are also lots of others without TV icons beside them.
The only problem I found is that 1080p made it quite difficult to read text on my screen, even though it's not very far away from the sofa. My eyesight is very good but I couldn't read the screen comfortably when surfing the net or even when changing settings etc. I swiiched, therefore, to 720p and this produces a very comfortable size of text for using the MAC.
My question is whether it really makes such a big difference whether one chooses 720p or 1080p, as I really can't see much difference for playback of video from Hulu or other streaming websites. Even when I played a DVD movie from the Mac Mini superdrive, the difference in quality was hard to detect. I guess if I tried viewing Full 1080p HD material, there would be some difference, but how much of such material is available on the net anyway? I take it that switching between 720p and 1080p wouldn't cause any harm, if I chose to do so occasionally for watching any Full HD movies that I rip?
    Look forward to hearing views!

Hi- I also picked up a mini a week ago, and have it hooked up to my Sony HDTV via HDMI, just as you. The same thing happened the first time I connected the mini to my tv- with overscan on, the top and bottom of the screen were cut off.
The solution is to pick up your Sony remote, go to the onscreen menus, and make sure that 'full pixels' option is selected. When you do, the screen will be absolutely perfectly aligned.
I mention this because while in overscan mode, I find that the Sony makes an absolutely beautiful screen, and text is quite easy to read, albeit a bit small.
