Constantly redrawing a bitmap & blurring it?
Hi,
I have a movie clip with motion in it. I'd like to duplicate this image, blur it, and mask it. I think I can do all of that, but I don't know how to update the blur so it will blur the moving elements in my movie clip.
Can anyone explain how to constantly take a snapshot of a movieclip and blur it (while disposing of old snapshots)?
Thank you!
first draw is a very slow method in comparrison to copyPixels. this should always be the preferred choice when dealing with bitmaps if at all possible. since you are duplicating an image this will work in your favor.
2nd. blurring is a very processor intensive behavior, and third full screen is even more crucial.
Parallaxing / blurring/ full screen = nightmare.
but there is hope
the best thing you could do is copy your full screen save that as an original bitmap
then have a second bitmap to copyPixels from the original bitmap after applying a blur filter and then turn the blur filter =null
then reapply the stage with your image. the best you can do in your case would be pretty advanced but the ideal scenario would be to bitmap and blit your whole stage.
like pacman the game. believe it or not there was not 1 moving part to that game it was all a bitmap. The motion algorithems were done pre render and then the pacman , ghosts and food were then placed accordingly.
this is what you should do as well. the less there is to draw and redraw is the main way to improve performance. unfortunately having blur and transparencies add to the redraws especially with moves, but if you merged the background and foreground and the blurs into 1 bitmap, you can sucessfully redraw the stage 1 time without nested renders.

Stretched bitmaps blurred when rendered using GPU on iOS, how to avoid?
Hi,
in a project of mine (targeting iPhone 4) I'm using pixel art. To show it properly I stretch the bitmap using scaleX/scaleY. However, when rendering using GPU the bitmaps get blurred, ruining the clear pixel art effect that I am after. Rendering using CPU does not blur the bitmaps, but is slower.
Any ideas on how to tell the renderer not to blur bitmaps?
There was a similar questions raised in another thread ( http://forums.adobe.com/thread/866712 ) but it derailed into a benchmarking discussion.
Thank you in advance.I did not.
Instead I rewrote my code to scale up all my spritesheets in software upon load. Something like this:
var bd : BitmapData = new BitmapData( _spriteWidth * magicScale, _spriteHeight * magicScale, true, 0x0 );
var matrix:Matrix = new Matrix( magicScale, 0, 0, magicScale );
bd.draw( originalBitmapData, matrix );
frames.push( bd );
The variable magicScale is stored behind the scenes in the engine so the rest of the code just acts as if the scene was not scaled.
Note that this solution does not use any blitting techniques, it places bitmaps on the stage and then swaps the bitmapData in them. No off screen buffers, just relying on the GPU.

Pages Palette constantly redraws.
Using CC 2014 with a photo heavy layout of 56 pages. EVERY TIME I go to a new page the pages palette redraws and hangs ID until it is complete. If I make even a minor move, it redraws and nothing happens until it is complete. I can't even change to another palette. I finally changed the display properties of the graphics to fast in the preferences and that worked but I'm not sure that is a real solution. Suggestions?
Think I found a solution - or better: a workaround for it.
When I delete the Indesign defaults, the problem stays.
But when I delete the InDesign SavedData file
(it is in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 6.0\en_GB\Caches)
the problem is gone.
Maybe this can help to find out what really causes this problem - and find a better solution to avoid it?
Thank you all!

Redistribute draw input to multiple selected bitmaps in a layer/layers?
Hi all
I am very new here but have one really important question for me...
First off: I am painter/scatcher/ilustrator (or how to name it..sorry guys, my english is really bad) and came to a point where I need to have two bitmaps one above other with almost the same content EXCEPT the one on top is just stroke with no fill and the bottom one is stroke with fill - this way I am able to have my strokes still clearly intact independently from possible fill mismatch that may occur during such drawing (for example: if you ever tried to fill any drawing you have to play with its atributes and there are several times when you need to hange the color as the project grows...but then after many re-fillings you notice that the stroke line becomes more and more thinner, blury etc. (I know about "Preserve transparency" radiobutton but it is no help if one sets Tolerance value too high and let's say he was not aware of...), simply put> you need to redraw those lines again and so on and on...pretty unnoying as hell; ...or ju just simply want to have the stroke intact by filling which may pretty often happen depending on tolerance value one set when filling color may cut a bit from actual stroke etc.).
I know I can easily do this by duplicating my first drawing (scatch/stroke only) and let the first one be filled with colours etc and the second left alone as it is (just the stroke intself) BUT all the time I face the fact that as being in process of creation such drawing I almost all the time need to RESTROKE/RE-SCATCH some parts of the image, so the way mentioned before do not work here cos it would be almost imposible to draw two identical changes on those two separate bitmaps in a layer/s.
So my final question/suggestion: do FW CS5 support any kind of "redistributed input" to all selected bitmaps/layers?
That way I would be able to redraw both bitmaps at the same time at once so the chages would be 1:1 in both!!! Let's say It could be in a form of another small icon in layers pane at the end of every bitmap line so one could interactively decide which one - and when - he wants to send input to, so one could make it on/off independently anytime (I want to make changes in both bitmaps at the same time but let all the others intact? OK, no problem: one would set "on" only those 2 bitmaps, make his changes, and then set them "off" again to edit them separately as before).
Please, help...!
regards
EriqHi Rick,
I am working on the same topic. I am strongly interessted in solutions to your open questions, that you pulled forward in the past.
Did you make any progress?
Thanks in advance and regards

SAP GUI 7.10p15 weird problem on FB70
Hi all,
We upgraded SAP GUI 7.10 to patch level 15 from patch level 14 using the install server on our Windows XP machines. A weird problem seems to appear since then on FB70. You press once or twice the ENTER key, without filling any field on the screen and the GUI stays on a busy state forever (trying to constantly redraw the screen as to show an error message on missing account number). It results to 100% CPU usage on the client (Windows XP machines, tried on Windows 7 also with same result) and seems to also stress the SAP system a bit. The only way to stop that behavior is to use the Windows task manager and kill the busy window. I have not seen this behavior before and can't reproduce it in any other transaction until now.
I got access on a machine that was still on patch level 14 and works just fine. I did the upgrade and the same behaviour (busy, 100% CPU) instantly appears. Oddly enough, this behavior does not occur if I run FB70 throught the debugger (/h) in any case.
Have you seen something like this or do you have any clue why that weird behavior might appear?
Thank you very much in advance for any insightHello Artemios,
Yes, this seems to be a know issue with Patch 15. Please open a ticket on BC-FES-GUI to get a fix for that or wait until Patch 16 is released.
Kind regards,
Martin -
Im resizing a PNG in my app, on iOS (on device it looks fine) but on Android (simulator) it looks jagged. It looks fine on android when it is not resized.
I have turned on smoothing and tried redrawing the bitmap using a matrix scale but it doesnt work.
Anyone know whats going wrong?
Thanks!To me it sounds like you made an app for iOS on the 300x480 resolution screen and now trying to make it look good on the bigger android screen (480x800). Like in any graphics program, when trying to enlarge an image, it's going to look jagged.
For my app, I initially made it for the Android platform at 480x800, then without changing the code or images, I made a build for iOS platform at 300x480. Interestingly, on the iOS, there is extra space around the app (as if I had increase the canvas size in Photoshop).
As you can see in my screen shot below of my Android device and iPad device side-by-side, http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/d9dad2af4c.jpg -
InDesign Mac CS2 -- Screen Jumping -- Please help!
I write and edit in InDesign for much of the day on 11x17 layouts, so I am usually zoomed in at least 200% to save my eyes. The problem is, whenever I type, the screen recenters itself continuously, sometimes the cursor will barely be on the pages and often in one of the screen's corners, severly slowing my work.
Is there any way to just get the screen to stay still and not have to constantly redraw to save me from scrolling every time I make a change on a page, which is easily many hundreds of times per day? Even if it just centered on the cursor that would be a godsend.
Coworkers with the same version do not have this problem.Not sure if I have a font manager plugin installed, as there's nothing under the plugins bar. But there is a font manager application, Extensis Suitcase (?). I'll try closing it, but I was told it needs to be open for my fonts to work. Thanks Peter.
Any other ideas -- perhaps a preference panel I'm missing? And if it's a CS2 thing, I can't upgrade, even for regular updates. -
Here is the situation:
I have a 2d array of Tiles, which make up the map for my game. When the game first starts, all of the tiles are "shrouded" because I am implementing Fog Of War as you may have seen in other games like Age of Empires and Civilization. The tiles are drawn onto a BufferedImage, (with a layer of shroud on top of each tile), and that BufferedImage is used for display in the GUI.
The problem comes in when the user moves a unit into a shrouded/foggy region. Here is a snippet:
// called when a tile has been revealed to a unit
public void unshroud(Tile t){
Graphics g = buffer.getGraphics();
g.drawImage(t.getImage(),t.getX(),t.getY(),null);
}This effectively removes the shroud from the tile, but for some reason, the game goes down from 32 to 16 frames per second when I move a unit through some shroud. The FPS goes down even when the unit is erasing about 3 tiles per second. Each tile is 32x32 pixels. Thats only 3072 pixels that are drawn onto the bufferedimage per second. It shouldnt slow it down that much.
I'm guessing that the problem is something along the lines of:
When I draw a little bit on the BufferedImage, it activates a "dirty" variable, which causes java to redraw the whole bufferedImage. This is just a guess and I don't know how to solve this problem even if that is the reason.
Thanks for reading.Why not just make the Tiles draw the fog themselves
so that the getImage() method returns a foggy tile.
The way you're doing it right now seems like a
little bit of a hack. You could put the shroud() /
unshroud() methods in the Tile class.Yes, this sounds better for most cases, but I don't think it fits with this one. The BufferedImage does not constantly call on getImage() on all of the tiles. Because the bufferedImage does not constantly redraw the tiles, the tile has to tell the bufferedimage "hey, i'm different now. redraw me"
It is this redrawing of the 32x32 pixels onto the bufferedimage that is causing the slow framerate. There has got to be a way for me to improve this speed. Maybe I should like make my own bufferedimage class or something and deal directly with the bytes? -
How do i stop draw refresh on mouseover?
I am drawing shapes on a custom element, and running a function on draw. for somereason it is constantly redrawing anytime I mouse over the shape how can I stop that?I am using cs6. here is a sample code with the issue that I am talking about was taken from a photoshop scripting forum but illustrtates my point. everytime you mouseover or mouseout the square it initiates the on draw but i only want it to redraw on the press of a button.
var winRes = "dialog { \
text: 'ScriptUI Graphics test', \
margins: 15, \
alignChildren: 'row', \
canvas: Custom { \
preferredSize: [200, 200], \
creation_properties: {borderStyle: 'black'} , \
buttonsGroup: Group{ \
cancelButton: Button { text: 'Cancel', properties:{name:'cancel'} }, \
tryButton: Button { text: 'Try', properties:{name:'try'},size: [40,24], alignment:['right', 'center'] }, \
// Window
var win = new Window(winRes);
function color() { return [Math.random(),Math.random(),Math.random(),1] }
// define the graphic property
canvasGraphics = win.canvas.graphics
// do the drawing
win.canvas.onDraw = redraw
function redraw() {
// creates a red filled square
canvasGraphics.newPath()
canvasGraphics.rectPath(10, 10, 200, 200)
canvasGraphics.fillPath(canvasGraphics.newBrush(canvasGraphics.BrushType.SOLID_COLOR, color(), 1)) // HERE
win.buttonsGroup.tryButton.onClick = function() {
win.canvas.notify("onDraw")
win.show()This appears to be a bug that has been fixed in AECC. I tried it in CS6 and the color box flickers like mad when you mouseover it and also changes when clicking the button. In AECC it appears to be working properly and is not effected by mousing over the box.

Hi all,
Can anyone shed some light on why Inkscape blurs my bitmap when I trace it?
Example:
On the left is my bitmap - clear as a bell.
On the right is the vectorized bitmap trace - blurred and annoying
I'm using "Colors" under the "Multiple scans" box of the Trace Bitmap options box.N30N wrote:The "blur" is from the multiple paths created when using the "Multiple scans" options. Just use a single pass and and set the colour your self.
That worked - thanks
iphitus wrote:.... and I was terribly surprised to see the CFA logo in an Arch thread
Sorry - you're not alone down this corner of the world any more
CFA won't give out hi-res versions of the Logo even to their own brigades because it may only be used "as authorised"! So I'm vectoring it myself so we can use it on our website and in our newsletter. -
Is there a way to detect redraw regions or at the very least when a display object is redrawn?
I have a layered window system that produces Windows 7 Aero Glass effect in Flash.
It consists of nested display objects, with overlays as so.
Root [
GlassWindowTop [
RenderedEffectBackground
BackgroundForGlassWindowTop [
GlassWindowMiddle [
RenderedEffectBackground
BackgroundForGlassWindowMiddle [
GlassWindowBottom [
RenderedEffectBackground
BackgroundForGlassWindowBottom (e.g. the DesktopBackground)
Windows can be raised and lowered by changing their order in the hierarchy and adding new levels.
Each glass window has a designated background (containing all lower windows) . It draws to an off-screen Bitmap the region of the background that is under the window, and applies a blur filter, tint, and parallax effects to it, and then displays that as it's own background as RenderedEffectBackground.
The problem is that "RenderedEffectBackground" is a static rendering of the window background, so in order to update it in real time, I need to detect when it's background display object (e.g. BackgroudnForGlassWindowTop) or any nested display objects are rendered.
I could simply update all RenderedEffectBackgrounds from the bottom up each frame, but that would be inefficient. Ideally, I could detect when a particular background changes (e.g. when a textfield cursor is flashing, or a MovieClip changes frames), and then only render from that object up. The rendering of course always has to take place from back to front, starting with the lowest window that has changed. If I could detect the redraw regions of the Flash Player (e.g. when a textfield cursor is flashing, or a MovieClip is playing), I could optimize this system even further by checking for layer overlaps and only rendering layers whose windows intersect the redraw regions, but obtaining that level of information would probably not be possible or logical since this this essentially needs to happen during some kind of pre render phase, which Flash may not support. Such a pre-render phase would itself be causing new redraw regions, but as long as it is processed from the bottom up, it could work.
Is there any AS3 function of the flash player that allows my code to obtain information about the display list as far as which display objects are due to be rendered, and then intercept some kind of "onRenderComplete" event for them right before rendering takes place so that I can render the higher display objects.
I originally tried to implement this as a filter, but pixel bender shaders in AS3 don't seem to allow sampling of an underlying object that would allow for blurring (i.e. the shader can access only the current point being rendered, coordinates passed to the sampling methods are ignored (this is documented behavior).
Any ideas?The feature that shows the link you are mousing over hasn't been removed in 29. Maybe the add-on you are using to restore the add-on bar is covering it. I've tested the Classic Theme Restorer and it seems to work correctly in this situation - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/

CS6 photoshop constantly crashing with OpenGL. Need help
OpenGL seems to crash randomly, but constantly. Previously running CS3, with few issues. I recently upgrade the graphics card after OpenGL testing failed, and it seem to be the most likely solution based on the old card.

Windows sometimes don't redraw their contents
Sometimes, when I obscure a window by another one or switch desktops, some of my windows have "blank" areas. When I then force the window to redraw somehow, like by clicking on something that changes its content, the window gets back to normal. I've seen this happen for urxvt that uses Xlib directly, AFAIK, xfce4-panel that's GTK+ app and Kopete or KTorrent which use KDE toolkit -- so it doesn't seem to be related to any particular GUI toolkit. I can't really reproduce it either.
This is a screenshot of what it looks like:
I don't really have an idea of what could be going on. I'm not running any compositor or anything else that gives fancy looks -- just plain OpenBox.
If you can point me in some direction, you'll be welcome.carlocci wrote:I don't get what's wrong with the picture.
Post your xorg.conf / videocard magic though
The "empty" portions of the irssi and Kopete Contact List windows are wrong. The only modification to the picture I did was blurring the conversation -- otherwise it's what actually was on my screen.
I'm using NVidia drivers, nvidia-173.14.09-4 and nvidia-utils-173.14.09-1 are the packages installed.
My somewhat messy xorg.conf:

Any way to see sharp pixels in a bitmap close-up?
Is there a way turn off antialias for a particular object (bitmap)?
I want to fly the camera close to an image and see sharp edged pixels rather than a blur. Can this be done?Not really, but what makes you think antialiasing is active on this item?
All you're doing when you scale or get closer to a bitmap is make the limited number of pixels into bigger pixels. It is not possible to create more pixels in Motion. go back to the source image's creation applciation and scale it up 200-400% and bring it back into Motion. You just need to make sure you aren't simply making the pixels bigger in the host application. You must find a way to create more pixels.
