Consumer law in UK

Hi! I have an iPhone 5s 18months old.  Without any reason yesterday when i watched a video i saw a white screen with the apple logo and i was unable to turn off the phone. I tried a hard reset, i tried to enter my phone into DFU mode and recovery mode in order to perform a restore with my mac. However, even if i tried two different mac computers and three different cables i am unable to restore my phone because there is an error 4013 appearing on iTunes (i have the latest edition and i dont have any computer updates pending). I spoke with apple uk and the representative told me that i have to contact apple Greece (I'm in Greece for holidays) because it seems like a logic board problem. Today i spoke with apple in Greece and they told me that even if my phone is out of warranty I'm entitle for the 6 years consumer law guarantee under the UK law. As a result the repair or replacement of my phone will be without any charge. Is this correct given that the phone is in excellent condition and it's clearly not my fault the problem? According to what i red, after the six first months i have to prove that the problem is preexisting in the device. In that case how can i prove it? I never used my phone without protective case or screen protector, there is not even a minor scarf on my phone and of course it is not water-damaged etc

yeah we got ripped off
it went from 1 year where the manufactor had the burden of proof
to ½ year where the manufactor had the burden of proof plus 1-½ year where the consumer have the burden of proof
and unless one buys a fighter jet then lifting that burden of proof is more expensive then purchasing a new device.
Apple will still honor the 1 year iPhone warranty in the EU. Other manufacturers may or may not.

  • There is a new Swiss consumer law, giving guarantee for a product for 2 years. Is this law retroactive from Jan 2012 or it is valid from Jan 2013 onwards?

    Hello,
My iphone's wi-fi is broken. One year guarantee period is over.
The new Swiss consumer protection law forces the seller (not apple) to gurantee for two years. Is this new law retroactive since Jan 2012 or it is valid from Jan 2013?

I'm sorry, you seem to have mistaken this user to user technical support forum for a room full of lawyers...
Call an attorney or contact the Swiss consumer protection agency and ask.
For what it's worth, almost no law can be made retroactive in any civilized country.

  • Why do we, and the law, allow HD manufacturers to screw us?

First of all, before anyone calls me a n00b, I DO understand why a 16GB (for example) drive is actually less, because manufacturers use decimal values when advertising, where as a gigabyte is actually measured in powers of two, giving 1024 megs.
My question is: If the *actual* measurement is agreed to be a power of two, as actually used and understood by operating systems and file systems, then why do we (and consumer laws) allow them to use phoney measurements to advertise their products?
Is this not akin to, for instance, advertising a flask as holding a litre of water, but we decide to interpret a litre as 700ml, which it simply isn't?
Why is this allowed? Why have the courts continued to allow it when it seems to me a very clear case of companies simply screwing their customers by using false mathematics?
Surely a gigabyte should be defined as a gigabyte one way or another and that definition should have to be used by everyone both in advertising AND in practise? See my litre comparison above - that would never be allowed, so why is this?

No one is defending the practice, per se. They're just telling you that 1) it's how it is and 2) where you can to go try and get things changed. This is no longer a discussion that is appropriate for these forums which are for technical support for Apple products, not for arguments about industry policies.
There's nothing more anyone can say. You've been given the explanation as to the apparent discrepancy and told how to proceed if you want to try and change the industry.
    Regards.
BTW, your analogy is faulty. A more apt analogy would be if your container was rated by one source in imperial gallons and by another in US gallons.

  • I have 3rd generation iPad retina and it seriously overheats?

I have I pad 3rd generation retina display and purchased this after 2nd generation was stolen and found overseas (had no home insurance) as recently was going through a bad 24 year marriage divorce and had to stop working a month later due to illness cancer.  I had to use last of savings to replace my sons iPad. As I was ill I did not really use the new I pad for at least six months my son who it belongs to was 11 years old and as I put it in leather case and had rules about charging whilst using iPad ( meaning He Was Not Allowed To USE whilst on charge) I did not notice the problem in the beginning although after that noticed iPad 3 seriously heated whilst charging and also prolonged use this has became more and more of a problem lately to the stage where you can't use it for more than 20 mins without actually hurting your hands. My granddaughter who owns her own iPad 2 picked up my iPad recently what was charging in my sons bedroom without a case or cover and she got that much of a shock when she picked it up that dropped it and cracked the screen. Apart from that her eight finger tips were red and on one hand tiny blisters were apparent on two fingers surely this is a problem. And as not in warranty this does should not affect my statuary rights as a consumer under consumer laws can anyone help ?

    Hi Mich10,
Your situation is definitely a problem, you have my sympathies. I can pretty much be sure that Apple will at least want to hear about this. I don't know what they will do but any iPad that overheats enough to burn someone they want to know about.
Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the iPad in to an Apple retail store or service provider. Tell them exactly what happend. Apple is always concerned about the safety of their customers.

  • Will ATV work with a Sont KE-P42SX1

I have asked something in this line before but want to do a final check before I go out and hand over money for a ATV.
I have a NON-HD Widescreen Sony P42SX1 Plasma TV. It has Component Video Y. PB/CB, Pr/Cr input and 576p signal input.
I understand from other posts that this will work - the question is how well. I am only interested in iPhoto and iTunes content. Right now we do not have enough Video content in Europe to make me want to stream video content to the TV.
I also do not want to stream iTunes to the box but use it as a remote iPod like device that can play content while the Mac G5 is off or sleeping. The same applies to iPhoto, I simply want to be able to see my albums of photos on the living room TV. My wife has her collection while I have mine - same for music.

Rick it may depend on consumer law from country to country, there has been a bit of a kerfuffle about the term HD ready here, I'm not sure what has happened elsewhere. Basically it seems your TV has a 1024 by 1024 resolution, which is a little non standard but certainly much better than standard definition, although I suspect it's tuner will only ever work with SD broadcasts.
The tv will sync with one computer but stream with up to five. I'm afraid you will be able to sync one of your computers and turn it off, but the other computer (or user, if applicable) will need to stream, which means it will have to be on and running itunes, before you can stream from it.

  • Macbook Pro Mid 2010 (Model 6.2) restarts like cray cray

    Can't believe this is happening...
    Macbook Pro Mid 2010 Model - Intel i5 2.4GHz - RAM 8GB - GPU NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
So I've seen quite a lot of threads discussing the 'GPU Panic' issue since I first encountered it a few weeks ago. The problem had never occurred on my MBP prior to that. However, the situation is now so bad that I wouldn't be able to open the Mac OS and make a copy of the panic report before it automatically reboots. Fortunately I have Windows 8 installed on the machine so I am still able to post for help on here.
A few questions / personal thoughts on the issue:
I bought this MBP back in June 2010 in China... So I won't be eligible for a free repair by any means right? It's been almost fours years since the purchase - significantly longer than three years restricted by Apple. I've seen another user who posted how they successfully defended their consumer rights by bringing some printouts of consumer laws and regulations. Lots of respect for that... But surely that only applies to goods purchased in the UK right? I'm so screwed... If a repair costs a few hundred quid then there is no point doing it, is there? I guess I can live with Windows for one or two years before the machine wears out and then get a new one. That being said, I still wonder if anyone in similar situation has managed to get free repair (GPU / logic board replacement or whatever it is). If so, mind sharing your story?
Is it nearly impossible to make a Genius Bar reservation nowadays or is it just me? My plan was to bring my MBP and talk to a genius and see where it goes. But both Covent Garden and Regent Street seem fully booked until a distant future. The reservation page does not show any available time slots, it simply says 'There are no available appointments at this store'. I mean I don't really mind if it is in a few days, a week, a month or even a year, just give me something. Telling people 'no availabe appointments at this store' is not very helpful is it? Since I have never had a Genius reservation (never had any issue using my MBP until this one - the good old days are gone) before, I'm curious what would happen if I just walk in with my MBP. Would they ask me to make a reservation or would they serve me right away?
Since I have never encountered the GPU panic issue (or any issue really) before I upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.2. I had never had any similar problems running Windows (Previously Vista, 7 and now 8) on my MBP either. I am speculating maybe the GPU Panic issue is more of a software bug. I am not ruling out the possibility of the GPUs being defective, but considering that fact everything was perfectly fine before the arrival of the evil Mavericks (for me, the upgrade to Mvericks 10.9.2), maybe the specific problem is down to Mavericks? I think this could be good news because Apple could quickly fix it for everyone as long as they know about the issue. Well... I don't think our chances of getting it sorted quickly are good, especially not when the new iPhone/iOS, which generates 10X more profits than Macs, is at the most critical stage of development. What do you guys think?
Oh it is just so frustrating. Using Windows on a Mac is definitely a nightmare - miserable 2 hour battery life and noisy non-stop fan spinning. Someone please help....................

In the Replacement Program Support Article, it states:
Apple will service affected 15-inch MacBook Pro computers free of charge until three years from date of purchase. This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the affected MacBook Pro.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
According to these terms, you are outside the eligibility window. However, I still second andyBall_uk's sentiments.
Make a Genius Bar Reservation. Print out a copy of the kernel panic report and the Support Article. If the 'Genius' refuses servicing without cost, ask for the store manager. It is ultimately at the manager's discretion.
Additionally, if this doesn't work out, you can look into Apple's flat fee repair program:
Do You Know About Apple's Flat Rate Repair Pricing?
    Best of luck.

  • I bought a 27 inch iMac that I must constantly send to repairs. How do I get my money back?

I bought this imac at the end of last year.
After 3 months the screen started to get smudges all over the place, and since I work in video production, thats just something I cannot have.
I sent my computer to get repaired, and they replaced the screen. It's been 2 months, the screen is getting burned again, and now it crashes constantly, I get the "white screen of death", it doesnt boot up, then the screen starts to flickr like a strobe light. I try again, and then the screen turns all blue, like a blue screen you get using a windows based PC. Now I luckly managed to boot it up, and came straight here, and if I manage to finish this post without it crashing again its a great deal of luck.
I called the apple call centre, and they said that apple somehow managed to replace my screen with another defected one (yes, they actually told me that) AND that I probably also have a defected seagate hard drive that they are replacing in all the imacs bought from 2009 to 2012. They also said that its "weird" that they didnt replace it the first time it went to repairs.
I do all my work on this computer, and I can't manage to constantly be without it to send it to repairs, and that is probably whats going to happen, till my warranty voids, then I will be the proud new owner of a 27 inch brick.
Im extremely dissapointed at apple. I was willing to pay 2000 euros for a computer, because then I would "pay for quality" of the product, and get good service. Well the product obviously has severe problems, and the customer service is even worst. They told me all that ridiculous stuff that puts apple in a shameful position, and also shoved me aside to deal with my problem with someone else. They said the only way I could "try" and get my problem fixed, Is if I send an actual letter (because apparently people still do that) to the Apple Europe Headquarters in Ireland. I live in Portugal.
Before the apple europe headquartes in Ireland ask me to send a pigeon to the United States, I would like to say that i'm probably never going to buy products from Apple ever again. I'm not the only person with this problem, and people close to me are having exactly the same problems and feelings twords apple. If I get my money back, maybe I will still buy my music from iTunes, that at least hasn't given me any problems...yet..

I have some news on my situation, and some news on the problem of the screen itself.
First, this still could be wrong, but here is a possible explanation for the screen problem:
    http://www.hardmac.com/news/2011/04/05/investigation-of-the-marks-on-the-imac-sc reen
It seems that the mac is overly sensitive to dust, but the only dust that actually goes in, is a very thin kind that you have pretty much everywhere. Maybe the heat from the computer makes the dust stick or something, I don't know.
Anyway, I wen't to the store where I purchased my 27'' imac, and asked to talk to the manager (it's one of those big chain stores, like best buy, but in this case its called "Fnac"). Apparently I was terrebly missinformed by pretty much everyone, including "Fnac" employees. It appears that I am in fact protected by portuguese law, and everytime I get a new component replaced, I get a new 2 year warranty for it (in Europe you always get 2 year warranty for everything, instead of 1). And, after the 3rd attempt to fix a recurring problem, I can in fact demand the money back, or a replacemement new product. There is still some glitchy stuff on that matter though. The manager said there is this problem in pretty much in every retailer everywhere - there are 2 kinds of stores that sell apple products: there are those stores that are just intermidiates between apple itself and the customer, witch means that for every product they sell, they only own a small percentage of it; and there are those who buy apple products, to resell them to their costumers. On this second kind of stores (like Fnac, and probably BestBuy and such), where they resell, they have to give you the money back because the law says so (since they own the products they sell). But Apple on the other hand doesn't allow it. So basicly, they have to give me the money back or a new product first, and then ask apple for permission and hope for the best, because if they dont give permission, the store will loose the money the product is worth.
My problem is "kind of" solved though. Now I know that even in the worst case scenario, I can keep replacing the screens once or twice a year, witch is not really great because I'll not be able to work on it for around 2 months in every year. It's still bad for apple, and its sad that the ones who actually solved my problem was the europe consumer laws, the portuguese government, and the store. Apple, a company that at this moment makes more money then the united states, doesn't have a solution for me, and doesn't agree with the solutions the other ones gave me.
Thanks for all your help and opinions. They gave me some perspective.
I will still be on the lookout for more answers, and if anyone has the same problem I can use my experience to help them.

  • Problem with iMac quality

I  own a 27" iMac that is just less than 4 years old, and where after sending it for repair with Apple in Denmark was told that it needed a new graphics card for DKK 2899 - approx. USD 490.00.
I found out that the iMac is produced at a factory in Shanghai called W8 where Apple have had problems with exact same issue in the past, and it seems had agreed to extended warranty replacement to fix these problems.
Nevertheless I do  believe that Apple customers buy Apple products because we expect superior quality and no Apple customer would expect to have problems with a major component especially on such an expensive products and certainly not within 4 years.
And if there were a seldom problem with a unit that Apple would rather step up to the plate and stand behind their products quality.
In my case it seems Apple - or at least Apple in Denmark - is unwilling to do so even though they acknowledge that it very seldom happen

Do you have a support system in Denmark to protect customers from problems with products and services.  If so advance your complaint there.  Irrespective of the warranty, here in the UK you can get official help against any supplier of goods that are faulty up to six years from purchase.  But you must be reasonable in your approach.  Apple's warranty promise specifically allows for this  when it says ...
Coverage is estimated. Learn about Apple’s coverage information for your product. Your warranty is the same whether or not you register.
Important: Apple’s 1-year limited warranty and AppleCare Protection Plan benefits are in addition to rights provided by consumer law (see details). If you believe you have a valid consumer law claim, please contact us.

  • Macbook Air running extremely slow - kernel_task at 300% cpu usage

I purchased my Macbook Air roughly 15 months ago and it's performance has constantly been impressive since I purchased it - until roughly a fortnight ago. I came home from work one afternoon and it was running at a snails pace. I had recently upgraded to Yosemite though I'm unsure if this had anything to do with it. I had also recently installed FitBit software to sync to my new FitBit flex.
It has continued to run in this manner constantly since the problem began. It is ridiculously slow, every single request takes a very long time to respond. Logging in takes forever. When I click on an app to open it, the icon bounces for 30 seconds or more, and it's not a smooth bounce either, it's quite a jagged bounce!
I'm hoping someone is able to provide some advice, guidance or help. The laptop is no longer covered by the 12 month Manufacturer Warranty, and I did not purchase an Apple Care plan as no Apple product I've owned before has experienced issues like this.
This whole experience is killing me! I'm suspecting hardware failure and I'm just so sad that this could happen to the laptop I've loved so much since I bought it!
    The problem:
The kernel_task process is constantly running at 300% or higher cpu usage, with Activity Monitor indicating the processor is being maxed out by a system task. Also, the laptop's fan is constantly running at full capacity - from the moment the laptop turns on, or wakes up.
What I think the problem might be:
As a result of many, many Google searches, it appears that this behaviour may be due to the Macbook Air thinking it is overheating - and I will clarify here that it certainly is not. It is cool to touch, always, when this problem occurs. (yet the fan is almost taking off!). As a result of the MacBook Air thinking it's overheating, it not only is running the fan at a very high RPM (confirmed with iStat), but it also is intentionally choking the system with 'simple requests' in attempt to cool the computer down. Apparently this is a built-in feature of OS X. The kernel has priority over user tasks, causing all user tasks to be granted a lower priority, causing the computer to run INCREDIBLY SLOW. Even as I'm typing this, I'm about two sentences ahead of what is showing on the screen!
    Steps I have taken:
    - Read widely across the internet with every possible relevant search term I can think of
    - Downloaded iStat to see if any of the temperatures are too high (they all seemed fine..)
    - Disabled Bluetooth and Wifi. (no change)
    - Reset SMC (multiple times.., no change)
    - Reset PRAM (multiple times.., no change)
    - Drained the battery completely (2 or 3 times, no change)
    - Install Windows 7 on BootCamp in attempt to bypass the issue (CPU usage was 100% constantly in Windows also)
    - Uninstalled FitBit software (no change..)
    - Uninstalled other software I did not need (no change..)
    - Attempt to boot into Safe Mode / Recovery Mode (even in this modes, the same thing is happening)
    - Repaired Disk Permissions
    - Backed up all personal data
    - Used the built-in Internet Recovery mode to format my Macintosh HD and re-install a fresh copy of OS X (Mountain Lion). (no change…)
    - Re-upgrade to Yosemite (no change..)
I've downloaded EtreCheck and here is the output:
    Problem description:

    Hi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.
I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.
I went in and they ran a thorough diagnostic check on my Macbook Air and determined that the sensors were indeed faulty - several were providing no information "No reading" instead of providing a temperature. Thus, the Air was unaware of the temperature across multiple components.
Despite the laptop being outside the 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty, the Apple Store determined that it was covered under warranty through Australian Consumer Law - the laptop is now in for a complete repair under warranty at no cost to myself.
    I couldn't be happier.

    Hi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.

  • Am I nuts? Is it supposed to be this way or is it not. Help!

Hi, as of now, I could say that I am a proud owner of my new Apple. But…
I have 2 issues, and I'm not sure if it's in my head, or if it's actually occurring, or it's supposed to be that way. But in any case, please slap me off the fence.
First issue and one that is bothering me is a screen problem. I have a basically a brand new laptop (Apple Powerbook G4 12 inch), and now that I've paid more attention to the screen, when I'm looking at bright colors such as white or really light blue or really light gray or something, I can sort of see 'glittering speckles' (sort of like an ice coated crystal-like surface) stuff that's basically uniform on the screen. They're actually really faint and not very noticeable, but they do make the screen kind of ‘dirty’ At first I thought it must be the nature of the LCD screen (this is the first time I've used an LCD screen by the way), but I was able to focus my eyes on the 'stuff' as I moved the window or background around. It's undoubtfully something that rests on the cover of the LCD.
Here's a simpler analogy of the same problem. Imagine you're sitting outside in the yard with a glass table where you can see right through it. Now imagine yourself grabbing some debris and scattering it evenly on top of the glass table. Then you grab a piece of white paper, slide it around from under the table while you are viewing the table from above.
Like I said, it is really faint and is indistinguishable on the darker colors, but is apparent on very light colors. I'm just wondering if it is the nature of the LCD and the coating or is it actually a screen problem.
My second issue is that it appears my screen is always brighter near the bottom. However, this is noticeable. Using it normally, I notice it as I compare text near the top of the screen to text near the bottom, or use pretty much a uniform dark screen. The top seems thicker and darker while on the bottom text skinnier and fainter. This occurs on all brightness.
However, if I were to tilt the screen until my eyes are perpendicular to the surface of the bottom part of the screen, the text does indeed darken. At first I thought it was an angle problem but I noticed that although the bottom did get darker, the top got even more dark. It just doesn't matter how I view it, the top is always darker. The illumination is definitely not uniform.
It is rather annoying and I just can't stop thinking about it at times. What should (can) I do about this? I’ve only owned this Powerbook for 2 weeks. Anyone else having this problem?
I know it's a long squeal so my best thanks to everybody who reads or replies.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Mark.
I've never come across your first problem on any of the Apple notebooks I currently own (or have owned in the past). Then again, perhaps I'm not looking close enough.
Have you compared it with any other 12" PowerBook? If not, perhaps you might be able to try that at a local store with units on display.
Otherwise you might want to give AppleCare a call. Alternatively, if you have an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider near you (I don't know where you are located) then you can take it in to be checked.
As for your second problem (uneven illumination), that has been known to afflict other notebooks. My own 15" PB has had its screen replaced on two occasions because of this. Depending on the severity, you might be able to get it replaced. Mine became so bad that the screen was effectively unusable.
To be honest, here in the UK, I would actually try for a replacement PowerBook - if the problems were severe enough and also because your PB is still very new. However the consumer laws in your country (wherever that may be) might be very different to mine.

  • MacBook Pro 15 inch mid 2009 Battery Life issue

Hopefully someone can give me some useful info on what to do!!
About 3 days ago I noticed that the battery status on my MacBook pro 15 mid 2009 changed to service battery.
I checked the system profiler and this is what I get:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1430
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 1430
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 169
    Condition: Check Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): -1130
    Voltage (mV): 11895
I have tried resetting the SMC to no avail and have also done a battery calibration. Surely this is not normal.
Lastly, I have no extended applecare, and the 1 year warranty ran out about a month ago (yay!).

    Hi Nick
That seems unusually low cycles for a failing battery - contact apple customer support, despite the warranty and/or the seller, depending on consumer law in Australia.
There was an apple mention of expected minimum battery life somewhere, - not sure if it applied to your model... hopefully someone'll recall the link.

  • I can't take a picture with my playbook

The camera doesn't work anymore. When I try to take a pic or record a video, I have a message error.

Rule of thumb with apparent hardware faults is if a restart does not fix it, reinstall OS using de-brick usb method..
If it still does not work it's a hardware fault, and depending on the warranty status and your country consumer law take appropriate steps with your supplier or RIM

  • Inactive Gift Card - How do you get constructive service from Apple?

I bought a Gift Card on 22 October from the local supermarket.  It apparently wasn't activated by them.  Somehow Apple have made that my problem.  My first request was answered by a computer.  I am now dealing with humans who do not seem to have any authority to resolve the issue.  This is a ridiculous waste of peoples time over something that is relatively simple.
How does anyone ever get Apple to resolve an issue?  Is anyone within Apple actually authorised to make a decision?  Honestly, I am exasperated.  How does anyone get Apple to resolve these issues?
For the last 3 weeks I have been patient - a model citizen.  Here is my latest email.  Apple keep removing its content.  They have also removed previous threads.  I have edited it slighltly for privacy reasons if that is their problem:
This verging on the ridiculous.  I was quite excited to get my first iPhone.  Now I am not.  This has taken weeks to resolve.  It has included my returning to the store to be told that they can not help me and to contact Apple.  I contacted Apple, number [########] and received nothing but an automated response that had absolutely nothing to do with the inactive card.  Apple did nothing else and then sent me a satisfaction survey.  I could not believe that.
[#######]  is my second attempt.  I have now spent hours trying to get this resolved.  We are talking about NZ$30 here! It is not the crown jewels.  It is not the value of an iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
I have proved that I purchased the card, again and again.  Obviously, for whatever reason, it was not activated at the store.
We have consumer laws in New Zealand.  I know them well.  I should never have let the store send me back to Apple as under our consumer laws it is the stores problem to solve.  It should not have been my problem and I should not have been put to this trouble.  I am not a criminal.  I purchased an iTunes card that didn't work.  That should be Apple's problem and the Countdown Store's problem.
So that this is in language that hopefully Apple can understand - iMad.  Yes, very angry.  Angrier than an 'Angry Bird'.
    What I will do is:
Tell everyone I know not to buy an iTunes card.  There is no service associated with it.
Tell everyone I know that Apple spends weeks messing you around and does not actually provide any service.
Tell everyone I know that Apple has a great product let down by poor service processes.
What I do want to make very clear is that I do not hold you or [name] responsible.  At least I am dealing with humans after the nonsense automated response I first received.  However, someone in Apple somewhere must be able to make a decision.  Whoever it is and wherever they are please pass on the following message - STOP MESSING ME AROUND!  I deserve an iPad2 for the time you have taken out of my life.  I can never get those hours back.

We have consumer laws in New Zealand.  I know them well.  I should never have let the store send me back to Apple as under our consumer laws it is the stores problem to solve.
You have let the original store off the hook? I think this is where I would spend all my focus. They need to activate it, not Apple.

  • I have recently purchased a Nikon D7100 and can no longer use Photoshop CS5 to process RAW files. What are my solutions ?

I am sure this has been asked before for similar new camera buyers, but as I have made a sizeable investment in purchasing PS 5  less than one year ago, I expect ADOBE to have an upgrade available for my new Nikon D7100 camera.
Other Software makers usually have upgrades available to download for new cameras not long after they are released.
I have seen on some photography forums where other users of my camera model have asked the same question as myself without receiving  any positive advice other than to up grade to PS 6. A few suggestions do not work or are possibly illegal.
Under consumer laws, in many countries, software makers are obliged to maintain support for a reasonable period of time after release.
Come on Adobe, please help the many thousands of PS 5 and Lightroom users to use the Adobe software that they have purchased in good faith and we will move to PS 6 or 7 or 8 when we are ready.
Can we please expect an answer to this problem any time soon ?

Why did you purchase an obsolete version? One year ago Photoshop CS6 had already been out a while.
    According to this list
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
support for that camera was added with Camera Raw 7.4, which means CS6 at least.

This is a user to user Forum, so you are not really addressing Adobe here, even though some Adobe employees thankfully have been dropping by.
Adobe is not in the habit of adding support for new cameras to obsolete versions of Camera Raw.
But it offers the free DNG Converter.
Edit: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows
And camera makers are free to adopt DNG if they want to make their cameras’ output easily editable with non-proprietary software, but it seems many of them simply don’t want that.
