Consumer video and FCP

Hi editors,
Is anyone familiar with the .mpg files that come from consumer video cameras--most likely the DVD camcorders?
I tried to convert in Quicktime to many formats, and the problem is:
FCP will NOT recognize the audio of any, including the original format.
I told my friend (favor video) that a consumer editing program might accept the formats... but maybe I could find a way to convert for FCP...
Any thoughts?

I have a dvdcamcorder (got it for a client that had some dvd's he'd recorded on one without "finalizing" the disks). What I did was capture on a pc using the software that came with it (pc only and usb2 connections). I then brought the files over to the mac and did some simple editing in dvdsp without having to do any decompress/recompress.

  • Canon 5D Mark II FCP Tutorial Video and FCP Plugin for Sonic Fire Pro 5.1

For those of you using Final Cut Pro 6 to edit 1080p video from the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, there is a video tutorial on lynda.com by Frank Rohmer entitled "Photography Video Workflow: Final Cut Pro + Canon 5D Mark II". I think it does a nice job of providing a workflow for FCP. YOu can view the introduction for free at this link: http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourse.aspx?lpk2=48108.
There is a new plugin to allow Sonic Fire Pro 5.1 users to score their music directly from within Final Cut Pro and round-trip to Sonic Fire Pro 5.1. You can read about it and purchase it at: https://www.smartsound.com/sonicfire/finalcutpro.html.
I am just a satisfied user of both products and have no commercial link to either lynda.com or Smart Sound.

  • IPhone 4 videos and FCP

Hi, I recorded some HD video with my iPhone 4 and put the footage in FCP 7, I realise editing H.264 is not advisable but I got under way before I read up on better ideas!
Anyway when I finished editing (and it was a painful experience) I exported a Quicktime, when I opened it the audio was majorly out of sync by like 2-3 minutes and the video kept going totally grey and freezing, jagged image, just a total mess.
Is there a way I can get around this? Has anyone experienced the same thing?
    Many thanks

    By doing what?
If you exported self contained current settings, it becomes a digital copy of what you have in the sequence. You indicated that you exported Quicktime. Was it a conversion?
If so, what codec and settings did you use, and were the frame rate and size the same as the sequence settings?
h.264 is a computational intensive CPU demanding codec not meant for editing.
Nothing is going to transform it into something else.

  • Sheer Video and FCP HD

    Can anyone help me.
I have been sent a number of .mov files that use the Sheer codec.
Although I can open them in QuickTime on my desktop they are greyed out in FCP HD.
Does FCP accept files encoded with the Sheer video codec does anyone know?

Right, managed to get it working by installing the Shear video reader (probably a good idea in the first place!) and now FCP is accepting it, although the quality was poor with wavy lines on pans and tracks etc.
Decided to export it again from QuickTime to a PAL DV stream and all seems well!
So if yu come across it, load the reader!
    Many thanks all.

  • Flip Video and FCP

I got a Flip Video Mino for Christmas and found that there was a Mino HD.
    specs
Mino: Format is Mpeg4 AVI and resolution is 640 X 480
Mino HD format is 1280 X 720 and the format is H.264
Is it that much of a big difference?
    Much obliged.
    JT

It'sa a big difference in pixel resolution. But the codecs are similar. h.264 is an MPEG-4 variant ... a slightly more efficient variation.

  • Suitable SD and SDHC Cards for Capturing Video for FCP?

Not exactly an FCP topic but this is the only forum that comes anywhere near!
Until a few weeks ago I assumed that all SD and SDHC cards were equal with regard to capture speeds.
Now I know better and have discovered that for trouble-free (consumer) video capture you need a Class 6 card to be safe.
I note that SD cards (by definition 2GB or less) have no speed classes.
I have trawled the internet, including the SD Card website but can't find any mention of the reason for this.
Is this because small SD cards are very fast or simply because nobody would conceivably use them for video?
I am asking because I have a small stock of 2GB cards which, if possible, I would like to use for short videos in the near future.

I've not used FCE so can't add anything there. Perhaps Tom W will drop by. He would know.
Regarding the VHS footage. You really ought to think about using a Time Based Corrector (TBC) between your VTR and the digitizing device. They will help deal with mis-timed frames (the 'tearing' effect) as well as chroma shift.
The Canopus ADVC-300 is the least expensive one I've seen and as an added benefit, it does the Analog/Digital conversion for you as well.
    Good luck.

  • Import video and audio from a dvd into FCP

Is there an easier way to import video and audio into Final Cut Pro - I am playing it on a DVD player and making a digital tape of it. Then logging and capturing it into FCP.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
Yes, there are a few ways that are faster. Have a look at this thread http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3465691
You could use software, such as "streamclip", or import by plugging your camera into your capture device and hooking your capture device into your computer and capturing by non-controllable device settings.
    Good Luck

  • New Air, New iLife and Consumer video cameras

Most consumer video cameras use Firewire... the new Air doesn't have this, but the new iLife (which includes iMovie) is one of the big features Apple are pushing with it.
Whats going on here then? How do they expect people to ingest their rushes??

most cameras within the last few years should support USB - firewire was more for DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO if i remember correctly. they're aging formats now and things rapidly moving to HD and those cams afaik should support USB - from consumer to professional
my sony ex3 supports both USB, Firewire & SD - firewire only for DVCPRO i think (don't really use that)
i'm in a similar boat though with audio as my entire studio is firewire based from audio converters to external DSP, etc...
just bought 11inch for on the road audio/video editing and may have to buy a USB audio capture device but YA - these are super mobile devices

Thanks for your reply. This video was recorded by my own professional camera, Sony PMW EX 3, two years back. But I am neither a professional cameraman nor an editor. I am just like a beginner in both.  I didnt have space in my storage device, so I just copied all my clips, thinking I can edit it latter, without recompressing or editing or whatever I should have done it at that point of time.  Now I need to edit it and use it in my profession. I am very upset.  Please help me in going step by step to get it in FCP X for editing.  Also I would like to know, do I need to buy the Compressor 4 for any reason. I dont mind in buying, if you think it is going to be useful for some reason.  Thank you very much in anticipation for any kind of proper guidance.

  • Video Screen Capture Software and FCP

I am shooting a video and need to incorporate some video screen capture software. There will be an audio overlay, so I do not need to record audio simultaneously while recording. I will be encoding with H.264.
    What should I use?
    Thank You!

iShowU and ScreenFlow are too very popular capture utilities.
    I prefer the latter.

  • Any ideas on a good way to create a digital album for photos, videos and text info?

I would like to create on my iMac an electronic album that has pages that allow me to place text, a thumbnail that would activate a video, and some text to explain the contents?  I have looked at a variety of  multimedia software like Powerpoint and am testing Googles Picaca but so far none look to do the job.

True that no two monitors ever match ... that's why engineers claim that NTSC really stands for Never Twice the Same Color. But the point of NOT using a consumer set for critical monitoring is that almost all consumer sets are designed to "correct" the incoming image somewhat (depending on model). So what you're seeing isn't necessarily what you really have in FCP.
On the other hand, a properly calibrated and aligned pro monitor doesn't add or take away from the image so what you see on the screen is going to be pretty darn accurate.
The same applies with audio monitors. Don't use consumer speakers that "color" the sound. Use reference monitors that are design to output the real sound as it was intended.
Once all the color grading and audio tweaking is done, then feel free to view on any consumer set that you want. Or view both at the same time while editing. That's why I use the Samsung 36" LCD.
if you are a male you have some color blindness. All males do, that's why the colorists at the BBC are all female.
Now that I know that, I finally understand why women know so many different color shades while most guys only know the typical Crayola 12.

  • Pro-consumer Video Camera: Recommendations?

I'm looking to purchase a pro-consumer miniDV camera but I am confused by the selection. I know that I want a 3-CCD imager (probably rules out Sony cams), 4:3 ratio and true 16:9 aspect ratio, 24p, 30p, 1080i/60i, and XLR audio input. It seems these cams run around +$3k.
I will not be using the cameras to shoot wedding or events but experimental video and I require rich colors. I will also probably be shooting dance. I would also like to leave room to film a short independent feature. (I might eventually have to upgrade to accomplish this.)
    Which cams do you recommend?
Another question: In your opinion is it worth spending a couple thousand more to get a lower priced but true HD video camera. By true HD I mean progressive scan video at 720p. By is it "worth it" I am concerned about the cost of shooting in 720p mode, the limited storage capabilities, the cost to purchase hard drives and decks. What are the costs and complications of purchasing a 720p camera? I know I am probably limited to Panasonic or JVC brands. Which cameras do you recommend?
Thanks so much for all your feedback.
      Mac OS X (10.4.1)
      Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Standard Definition (the format which the DVX100 shoots in) has a relatively straightforward editing workflow, tried and tested in recent years and easy to work with, particularly if you are working on a budget and are restricted to using an iMac, which has less options for expandability i.e adding a second firewire bus (not firewire port - sometimes you can get problems capturing video via firewire if you have your transfer deck or camera hooked up to your computer on the same firewire bus, despite being on separate ports - not always and you may never experience the problem, but if you're editing in more than a casual user environment you don't want to take the risk)
You can't add e-sata drives (alternative to fW drives) via an e-sata card on an iMac whereas you can with a macpro which can also add internal storage whereas an imac can't.
HDV which the XA-H1 shoots in, is at the lower end of the Hi Def formats, looks great when shot well and displayed on a large screen hi-def tv, but is highly compressed and causes problems in the editing workflow.
Ideally, you want to have a monitor or at least a portable tv hooked up to your computer for external monitoring of your video - to check whether titles are correctly displayed within the title-safe areas and more importantly for colour correction as computer displays and tvs don't display video the same and whereas this may not be important if you're videoing your great aunt's birthday or the kids playing in the park, if you're doing serious stuff, such as commercials or short films you need to be able to monitor externally.
Performing this is simple if you're editing standard def but if you're editing HDV you can't do this using the method described.
You either have to use a combination of HD monitor such the Apple 23" Cinema display coupled with the Matrox MXO card or use a compatible capture card to convert to a more edit friendly format such as dvchpro to avoid long render times - both options will cost more than the price of the imac on it's own and is why it's recommended to get a macpro tower when using a Proapp such as FCP if you're hoping to edit for a living or if you're a serious and regular user.
That's not to say you cant edit HDV using a imac and external FW hard drive set-up - I'm sure many contributors to this forum do - just to illuminate the possible difficulties.
Also, when shooting in any hi-def format, your technical camera skills need to be more proficient - focus in an image that is blown up to higher sizes if much more critical and you're going to show every blemish and wrinkle of a character's skin.
Yeah, the XA-H1 is a fine camera for shooting with from a camera and image perspective - much more difficult to deal with the footage as an FCP editor and potentially a lot more expensive if you want/need to do it properly.
Yes, as large hi-def tv's become more widespread, Hd is going to become the format of the future - as I've no doubt, will tapeless cameras.
Many Prosumer HDV cameras offer the option of downconverting in-camera to standard def, meaning you can shoot in the HDV format, then downconvert to standard def for editing, retaining the HDV master for future re-editing if you don't currently have the setup capable of editing HDV natively or if, in future, the HdV editing workflow becomes easier to deal with.
This may be your best option, but you'll need to check if the XA-H1 has this facility - I'm not familiar with this camera but know that the Sony Z1 or v1 both offer this facility.
Don't forget, there's not yet an inexpensive way of burning HD/HDV material to DVD that'll play in the majority of HDDVD/Blu-ray players yet - that's coming in the near(ish) future, so if you are outputting to DVD, you'll have to do this in SD anyway.
BTW, I have used the DVX-100 extensively and it's the standard for 1/3" CCD standard def prosumer cams.
Search the forum for HDV to check out the current thinking on editing HDV - there's masses of opinion out there.
    Good luck!

  • Problem with Print to Video in FCP 6.0

In the past I have been able to print to video with FCP 5, now not working with FCP 6. My Sony HVR A1U is seen by FCP, I can log & capture no problem. When I go to print to video, the sequence does not show up on my camera LCD and I cannot capture it. I have checked the system profiler and under firewire the camera is listed. In the print to video window I have checked Automatically Start Recording, but this has no effect.
    Thank you for your advice

Just curious. How do you get your computer too see the HVR. I am using I movie HD and it does not see anything. Is there a camera setup procedure? I looked at the vague manual which was no help.
    Thanks in Advance
