Content Management System (CMS) vs Knowledge Management (KM)

Hi,
What is the difference between CMS and KM?  Is CMS part of KM?  How do you install CMS or KM?  I need to be able to install CMS.
Thanks,

Hi,
"CMS" would in the first place only be a generic term that you can call any product that manages content.
At SAP I am aware of the following similar terms:
<b>KM -</b> Java-based CMS, integration framework for 3rd party CMS's and more of SAP NetWeaver, runs in the Portal
<b>CM -</b> The architectural part of KM that deals with basic content management services. With additional services and TREX this combines to KM.
<b>DMS -</b> "Document management system", R/3-based system for management of engineering documents, bases on "KPro" in Web AS ABAP, part of mySAP PLM, integrates into KM via repository manager
<b>KW -</b> KPro-based system for managing SAP-related documentation and training
<b>Content Server - </b>Object storage location for KPro-managed documents (see DMS)
<b>KPro -</b> "Knowledge Provider", deep level very generic set of ABAP methods to manage document attachment objects in an R/3 environment
Hope that clarifies...

  • How to create a built in Content Management System

Hey guys, I've found myself in a spot of trouble.
My client commissioned me to create for him a website for his new restaurant (Paul's Place). I built him a responsive site using another website I found online (www.megnarestaurant.com) as a guideline. The problem is though that the client plans on changing the menu about every month and wants to be able to change it himself. I could teach him how to edit the files and add new ocntent himself (It's not even that hard after all) but that just doesn't seem like the right option.
Instead, I want to create a built in content management system that doesn't require a third party website or software like Wordpress or Joomla. I was thinking about having a page called "www.paulsdiner.com/login" where the client can log in using a username and password and can then change the content of the website.
My menu page is pretty much the same as the one found on "www.megnarestaurant.com/starters.html". I'm also using gloriafoods as an ordering system meaning that the client will have to change it on both the website itself and on the actual gloriafoods website (Not really an issue).
I want the client to be able to edit the menu boxes and add new boxes along with being able to add a new menu section (Like in the Jump Menu) which follows the template of the existing Jump Menu.
I'm making this website as a favour to my friend so I'm not being paid. As a point of reference (And future bragging and maybe some innocent blackmail ) how much do you guys think the creator of "www.megnarestaurant.com" charged his client?

    Have a look at Perch
Perch - The really little content management system (CMS) - Perch
It requires a php/mysql database to run but the tables and set up are all automated through the Perch set up files - you just need a server that runs php/mysql. It works on the same principals as the one Ben suggested but its a lot cheaper for a one off site - however if you intend to build more CMS driven sites the one Ben suggested might be more financially viable in the long run.
The nice thing about Perch CMS is it fits in with your workflow unlike Wordpress/Joomla where you have to jump through hoops to change anything.
Plus I think you can take Perch for a spin before buying (or at least you could when I was exploring CMSs) - you can't with Power CMS. I never investigated Power CMS beacuse I would not buy something before trying it. It looks good but it might be a bit dated as it doesnt seem to be in continuous develoment. Perch is in a constant state of development and the guys are working to make it better on a daily basis.

  • A website "Content Managment System" with CRM

    hi all,
we're looking into revamping our company's website. It'll be mostly a B2B website (in the future b2c). We're looking into finding a Content Managment System (CMS) that can handle most of the work so people form our marketing department will be making change without manipulating the code. Most importantly we need the website to be able to link into our SAP CRM. The only simliar products i was able to find was CoreMedia and Sybit. Do you guys recommend any kind of a CMS?
    Thanks you in previous!

    Hi Samer,
the only integration supported by SAP is the integration with an SAP Enterprise Portal. However, SAP Internet Sales can be easily and extensively modified to fit virtually any needs. Maybe you could have a look at the "Development and Extension Guide" for E-Commerce which is available from the [SAP Service Marketplace|https://service.sap.com/crm-inst] (-> SAP CRM 2005 -> CRM Core and Standalone Components) and which shows many ways to fit the webshop to your needs.
    Best regards,
    Martin

  • Document Management systems

Looking for Document Management system to replace GW
    Is this a Fair analysis...
No improvements in GW8... (Sadly GroupWise is going nowhere fast specially
    when it comes to DM).
Users want more functionality - access the email archiving (not the joke
archives), PDF support, Library from the Web etc.
Since we are going to have to move from Netware soon - I guess Windows is
the way to go (looking at the dead SmallBusiness Nows-SBE2 forum - Novel
doen't have a credible Small Business solution or the will power)
What other Document Management systems exist?
I've come across things like KnowledgeTree but don't have any experience of
    it.
I guess others who have moved from GW DM have already left the Novell forums

    Document Management System
    What is document management system?
The capture and management of documents within an organization. A DMS includes Web access to support occasional users and work from remote sites as well as a secure document storage area (vault). Additionally a DMS includes search and retrieval, versioning, and content caching.
Benifit of using Document Management System
    * Reduced paper storage - removal of paper by converting paper documents that are stored within the business or in an archive into an electronic form
    * Improved retrieval time - obtaining paper from storage or an archive is typically slower than electronic retrieval of documentation. Along with the improved retrieval time comes the ability to perform searches for similar information. This is especially useful when trying to perform major changes or perhaps searching for information subject to litigation
    * Saves paper, printer and toner costs - reduced need to print paper documents as electronic versions are available for use or reuse. Whilst the paperless office is still not a reality, it is anticipated that the availability of an DMS would reduce the need for multiple paper copies of documents. If the DMS does not have an electronic signature capability then at least one "master" paper signed document will need to be printed
    * Improved staff productivity - less time spent searching for documents or trying to find the current version. Faster document review and approval cycles, particularly where multiple reviewers and approvers are involved in the business process
    * Improved disaster recovery - DMS contains business critical documents and has its own disaster recovery plan that allows the documents to be restored in the event of significant disruption or disaster for the business
    * Improved security through a single secure location for documents and ensuring that the right people are able to access the right documents
    * Improved compliance with regulation or legislation
    * Central control and management of documentation
    * Reduced chance of "losing" documents
    * Enhanced competitive situation due to improved internal document processes

    Hello Diego,
    Sorry for the late reply..
Yea the Enterprise Manager is running.
When i tried the URL which you had given, it is displaying as 404 not found.
Also when i start the Diagnostic agent in the SOLMAN, it is getting started and it is showing green LED in MMC, but when I try to connect the Diagnostic Agent to Solman in Basic configuration step, it is turning yellow and displays as,

  • Can SMD be setup to monitor the Managing System?

Hello, We have been working off and on for the last few months
installing Wily Introscope, which in turn required E2E RCA, which in
turn required SMD to be installed.  Since virtually all of our systems
are on a relatively low pl of the kernel, 114, we also installed the
latest SP and kernel to our Solution Manager system.  So, the SM system
    is at 7.00 pl 146, and SPS 16 (it's a dual-stack UNICODE system).
However, every other of our almost 27 ABAP stacks are at pl 114,
    unfortunately.
We had read, via SAPNet note 1126859, that the MANAGED system must be
at least at kernel 7.00 pl 121.  As I saidl, only our MANAGING SM
system is at that level.  So we thought that we'd try to have SM
monitor itself, in the context of SMD and Wily Introscope.
Unfortunately, we got stuck at setting up the trusted RFCs for the SM
system to monitor itself.  SAP AG's instructions for setting up the
trusted RFCs is in the following guide: Root Cause Analysis
Installation and Upgrade Guide (v3.30 - July 2008), section
6.3.2 "Setup RFC Destinations to Managed Systems".  Transaction SMT1
doesn't permit 2 RFCs with the same target <sid>.
    So, our questions:
    1. Can a MANAGING system also be a MANAGED system?
    2. If so, would you kindly clarify how to configure the RFCs for that
scenario? Or perhaps we don't use RFCs in this scenario?
For now, we will move on and try to setup Wily/SMD for a Java-stack
    system we have available (Portal).

    Hi Felipe Pitta,
The Managing system can be managed, for that include your Solman in a solution and proceed all the needed activities like Agent installation, Wily agent setup etc as you do for the managed systems.
You need to create RFCs to the BI client of the solman if you are the same BI component which is available in Solman (001 is your BI client) or RFCs should be created for the BI system which you are using.
WEBADMIN RFC will be created automatically during SMD Agent installation.
By this your solman's data will be collected.
For furthur clarifications pls revert back
    regards

  • CMS (Content Management System)

    Hi,
Firstly and quickly some background. I have a web design and development company and am currently bringing my company into the 21st century by revamping my site and my method of developing sites from a fixed width layout to a responsive layout using sass + compass and Zurb’s foundation framework.
I would like to add a built in content management system into my site that will allow my clients to log into an account set up for them via my website which will allow them to edit certain elements of their site such as text and images as well as adding in additional content / pages. Something that would allow me to wrap a class round elements of sites to show which sections I want to be editable by my clients would be ideal.
Ideally I would like to find a method / tutorial to build my own robust reliable easy to use CMS so I don’t have to pay a third party.
I don’t mind using third party software but it has to be able to be integrated into my site so my clients can edit content on their site through mine. Also I don’t want the CMS part of my site to have another company’s logo etc.
Hope this all makes sense, any help that can be given is much appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Elliot.

All the websites I build are based on a custom CMS that I've been refining over five years.
If, as you say, you want to build your own CMS, here are some points:
    1. You must be able to write PHP and SQL code effortlessly. Also know some javascript.
    2. Allowing clients to upload and edit material on the site raises many security issues, which must be addressed. You must build the CMS so that if a hacker breaks into it, the damage would be minimal. Also, clients may "unwitingly install material you don't want to allow, like javascript.
    3. If clients have the ability to create new pages, then they must also be given the ability to manage their menu system. Assuming that the menus are multi-level, this is more complex to program than just giving clients text boxes to add content to.
There is a book on creating a CMS called "Buid your own database driven website using php & mysql," but it's outdated and has many shortcomings.
PHP Solutions by Powers will teach you many of the things you need to build a CMS, although it's up to you to put it all together.
Unless you need to build a CMS that has complex features that no off-the-shelf CMS can accommodate, then I suggest you not try. Instead of learning to build your own CMS, apply your time to learning Drupal, Joomla, or even WordPress. Then modify your existing websites to work with the CMS.
