Control xserve RAID from iPhone

Would it be possible to control the xserve RAIDs in our facility with our iPhones? I would love to be able to -at least- start or stop the machines, if necessary with command line tools from the iPhone. Or to get some basic health info. If anyone can help (or Apple staff, make my wish come true and make a special iPhone app for christmas?)
Thanks, Rob

I think you would install the tools on a machine somewhere, and then use an ssh client on the iphone to ssh to that server, and run the tools from there.
I think getting an Active Storage Labs XRaid and using their upcoming iPhone client would be snazzier

  • Accessing Xserve Raid from 2 Xserves

I am in a bind and need a temporary solution. I have an Xserve Raid with 2 disk partitions, one on each channel. These are currently connected directly to 1 Xserve using the Fibre Channel cards. I know one partition is bad and won't go into the details. Can I simply divide the fibre channels between 2 Xserves without using a fibre channel switch? The upper controller with dirves 1-7 has the falty partition and the lower controller with drives 8-14 has the stable partition.
    thanks
    Jeff

The correct way to share a XRAID side is with a switch... in fact the only way I know of to do this is with a switch.
But digging deeper than that whether you share it with a switch (or some other way) you cannot simply give any two clients access to the same data without some form of arbitration. Attaching two (or more) clients to a raw data source over fibre allows multiple opening/writes access to a file which immediately results in data corruption and loss.
You can share the volume over ether from one Xserve to another because then the access is arbitrated by AFP (or SMB whatever protocol you use) but if you simply want to plug clients into raw data then you need XSAN or some other type of SAN arbitration. And SAN is no "temporary" solution to any problem - it is a full fledged project unto itself.
    Good luck,

  • Xserve RAID won't mount on G5.

    Hi,
We purchased an an Xserve RAID yesterday that has 4 x 500Gb ADM's in it. I was checking out the different options in RAID admin and the Xserve was working perfectly, the unit was mounted on the desktop. I changed the RAID type from something I was experimenting with back to RAID 5. This was fine, after erasing the RAID, it showed on the desktop. I copied around 250Gb of data to the Xserve, and it was going fine, until the last Gb or so failed because the name of a file was too long. I thought this was odd, as both the source and destination devices were jHFS+. The RAID then stopped responding, and this required me to forcibly restart the G5. Upon doing this, the RAID didn't show on the desktop. I went into Disk Utility, and there was nothing.
I restarted both the G5 and Xserve multiple times, reseated the fiber card, fiber connections, drives, control modules and reset the control modules. This still didn't work. I deleted the RAID array and created another, the RAID was still invisible in Disk Utility. System Profiler reports that a fiber connection is established. I can't remember the LUNs it shows though.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Elijah

I have managed to fix the problem (at least it's still going at the moment...). We were just about to return the Fiber Card to Apple, but just before I removed the card from the G5 I had one last look at the settings on the RAID. Previously I had noticed that LUN Masking was on. I didn't take much notice of this before, as I read in an Apple manual somewhere that LUN Masking is always on while the Xserve is initializing the disks. As a last resort I thought to try and force LUN Masking to be disabled. I changed the array to JBOD, so the disks wouldn't be initialized, and entered the advanced settings. I then went to the LUN Masking section and turned off masking for both controllers. I then shut down the Xserve and unplugged it for 10 minutes.
I then turned on the Xserve and the G5 and to my utter delight, the G5 said "Unrecognized disk inserted"! The G5 was finally seeing the RAID.
I then formatted the RAID and everything has been fine since (4-5 hours).
I have no idea how LUN Masking turned on, the masking list had no devices in it, so the RAID was basically disallowing anyone access through fiber. Upon turning masking off, the RAID reappeared on the G5. Apple support said nothing about LUN Masking when I on the phone to them. I guess they though resetting the RAID controllers would reset the LUN Masking, but it doesn't seem to. I repeat: Resetting the RAID controllers does not reset LUN Masking.
All along this was the problem, but no-one at Apple or the reseller we purchased the Xserve RAID from thought of it!
I hope this helps someone out there.

  • Xserve RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1 not quite working

I have an Xserve RAID that's currently at firmware 1.3.2/1.26a according to Xserve RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1. However, when I try to upgrade the firmware to 1.5.1 via the RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1, it just doesn't do anything--it accepts the .xfb file and then...nothing. Quitting out of the the Admin Tool and restarting still shows the firmware at 1.3.2/1.26a. Same thing if I shut down and restart the Xserve RAID from the RAID Admin tool. Any tips? There's nothing stored on the RAID system yet (the array hasn't even been created--it's a blank system) and nothing is attached to it either (I've just plugged in the ethernet links to format it first before I start attaching an Xserve G5 to it). Also, even though the lower controller is showing green and I have an ethernet cable plugged into it, I can't get any info out of it nor can I configure it with an IP address. Only the top controller seems to allow some configuration such as IP address.

    Okay, I've solved the problem.
Basically, the issue was that the lower controller wasn't seated right despite it showing a green light in RAID Admin. When I went to visually inspect it, I noticed that despite what RAID Admin 1.5.1 claimed, its light wasn't even on, let alone green. And since the lower controller handles slots 8-14 of an Xserve RAID and my slots 8-14 are totally unpopulated (empty) at the moment, it was never noticed. Now that I've reseated the lower controller, everything is visually showing green across the board and the firmware upgrade is proceeding as expected and it has upgraded the firmware from 1.3.2/1.26a to 1.5.1/1.5.1c complete with autorestart of both upper and lower controller modules.
Basic lesson learned: RAID Admin lies. If possible, visually inspect the box itself!
    Thanks to all who responded.

  • What is the max distance recommended between xServe RAID and the host?

I'm looking to relocate my rack to quieter spot, but I would like to keep my xServe RAID in the rack.  How far away can I keep my xServe RAID from it's host system?  I have it hooked up to my MacPro right now.

    Hi
I would say about as far as the FC Cables and your budget will go. According to Apple's Tech Brief on the subject that will be around 500 metres provided you use the relevant transceivers:

  • Xserve RAID

Is there a way to admin a new Xserve RAID from my Lion Xserve? I have many 1TB drives I would like to share through AFP on the Lion Server with an Xserve RAID connected to the Xserve via Fibre Channel. Is this still possible?

I just moved my Xserve raid from an old Xserve to an Intel Xserve running lion.  However one side of my raid is not showing up.  Checked all hardware/firmware, when I plug it back into the old Xserve running Tiger all my volumes show up.

We had a drive go bad on an XServe Raid.  We replaced the drive.  It went through the rebuilding process. Now we can't mount the raid.  The verify in the disk utility is successful but it still won't mount.  What are we missing?

  • How to low-format disks in XServer RAID

I am new to the macworld and have been assigned a mission to low-format 2 XServer RAID with 28x400Gb Hitachi Deskstar disks. I need to low-format it because the customer is about to sell the servers, and are therefore obliged by law/or insurancecompany to make sure that no data can be restored.
I have tried to extract the disks and run them in a PC with a software called KillDisks, which writes zeros to the disk 10-fold times. However the PC will not accept the disk, im getting errors that states that no sectors can be read. Also, in BIOS the disk are supposedly 126 Gb...when in fact its capacity is 400 Gb.
Sounds like the Apple firmware is not compatible.
So, my question is...can I perform this task from inside the XServer, via some webinterface or perhaps the remote adminapplication?

I see you point but I mostly meant the need to extract/take apart the drives.
The job was to make the data (reasonably) "unrecoverable"?
(The KillDrive application can maybe even "destroy" drives for Xserve RAID use?)
Maybe not relevant here but the Xserve RAID woun't "buy"/just work with "any" drive/firmware.
He shouldn't even have to "reformat" raid-sets as you can write zeroes to each whole raid-set volume from the Disk Utility using the "security option" (will take a lot of time though - but probably much less time than doing it for each drive individually - if JBOD or otherwise).
Maybe even possibly started from OS X install DVD (if servers are "wiped"). Don't know if FC drivers are present on the DVD, but think they are.
(Also a "Mirror Door" G4 or Xserve G4 can probably "format" (really initialize) these drives and can at least hold up to 4 drives at a time.)
And you can manage (but not erase drives/volumes on) the Xserve RAID from any computer (if you know the IP) using the Java RAID_Admin.jar file that is "extractable" from The OS X version file (.app) "package". And it can be run on (most?) OSes that can run Java. Certainly from Windows with Java installed.
And you don't buy a couple of old preowned used Xserve RAIDs and spend a huge amount to restore data if you don't think/know it's REALLY worth the while.

  • Basic Xserve Raid Set Up Help

Please excuse the newbie question I have looked on the forum and cant quite find the info I need.
Can someone give me a step by step guide to setting up an Xserve raid please.
We have 2 G5s each running Final Cut Pro. We have just purchased a 7TB Xserve raid from Apple Refurb.
We would like a very simple set up where each G5 uses half of the Xserve. We do not have a fibre switch at this point - we do not need to share media however we will add this later.
So our initial requirement is a very basic 2xG5 each with a single fibre connection to each half of the Xserve. Sounds easy but . . .
We connected one of the G5s to both fibre ports in order to just set up the drives, once done we will simply disconnect one fibre cable and connect to the other G5.
We thought that the Xserve would be pre-configured to raid 5, which is what we would like to use. However upon connection there was a message that the drives were not readable and needed to be initialised. (the standard apple message if drive is not formatted)
We ignored this message and went to the drive utility to see if we could mount the drives and although it sees two drives, (each just under 3TB) as you would expect, it seems they are not mountable. (Since the drive utility saw 2 drives I assume that they are preconfigured to a raid)
So I looked in the raid utility and the only option is to 'add system'. If I click this I get a dialogue box asking for address and password. I understand the 'private' 'public' password and used the host computers IP address as there is no network.
I thought that this would take us through to the set up that allows you to create arrays and raid types etc.
So I am a bit stuck.
If the drives are preconfigured to raid 5 how can I mount them ? as that would be the simple config we need.
Or do I need to start from scratch ? Hence my request for a step by step guide.
best wishes and thanks for your help in advance
    Neil

I can't speak to exactly how the Xserve RAID comes from refurb but in general there are two steps to using the RAID.
    1) Create the RAIDs on the machines. (This takes some 30+ hours.)
    2) Format the new volumes. (This takes 2 minutes.)
Assuming the RAID came configured RAID 5 on each side and *you didn't shuffle the drive order* then they should still be configured and available that way. Apple doesn't assume that you are going to use the Xserve RAID with HFS+ formatting - they don't even assume you're going to use it with a Mac so I think the volumes are probably unformatted. My guess is that you are between steps 1 and 2 and you will need to choose the volumes in Disk Utility and format them to HFS+ (but probably not journalled if you are doing video work) and partition them.
You can get and set the actual RAID information using the Java tool RAID Admin.
You can (and should) connect to one of the ethernet ports on RAID unit, but the computer you connect will need to be in the same IP range (probably 169.254..) to get to the first time and run RAID Admin. This is how you can set-up, tweak and check the status of your RAID through software. This is also where you can set the IP of the RAID to be more in-line with your computers local network if you're using something different.

I'd like to move a set of disk with an existing Array from one Xserve RAID to another. Can I simply shutdown both Xserve RAIDs and move the disk over, assuming I put the disk back in the same order?

Yes, you should be able to do this.
BE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP FIRST.

The volume control has disappeared from the music app on my iPhone and i can't play any music how do i fix this?

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray BEFORE doing the reset.

I want to control a PowerPoint presentation on my iPad remotely from my iPhone. Is there an app that allows me to wirelessly control my iPad from my iPhone?

    Yes.
The app is called Keynote Remote and is available for both iPhone and iPad from the App Store. This app can also run Keynote presentations from your Mac from either your iPad or iPhone.
Both your iPad and iPhone need to be on the same WiFi Network. With your iPad Keynote file loaded, go to:
iPad > Keynote > Tool Menu (wrench) > Advanced > Remote and turnon "Enable Remotes"
on your iPhone set up the link:
Keynote Remote > Settings > New Keynote Link and follow instructions - you will be given a set of numbers, enter those numbers on the iPad and you are all set.
