Controlling spry menu inside tables

I am trying to add a spry menu bar widget inside a table on my web page. The problem
I am having is the spry menu floats and does not move with the table. Is there something
I must do to nest the spry menu bar inside the table ?
I tried inserting a div tag and then placeing the menu inside of that but the menu still
floats above the table. Any help would be greatly apprieciated

Why nested tables? What are you try to do? Centre the menu or have it aligned to the left?

  • Spry Menu issues in Internet Explorer

    I have created a Spry menu for my website and although the menu appears to look fine in Firefox and Safari, the formatting changes in Internet Explorer(IE).
    1.sub menu bar is not dropping down below the main menu bar it is appearing at the top of the screen.
    2.When you hover over the sub menu bar items the font should be white however in IE it is appearing as an aqua color.
    3.The menu bar is not straight across the page, at the beginning and end there are chunks of the menu bar that appear white.
    Are there any fixes for these issues that would help to make the menu look consistent across all browsers.  The website page is
    www.applmgt.net/LMNtestpage/html, below is the code.  Any help would be appreciated as soon as possible.

    Hi Nadia thanks for your help in trying to fix the spry menus.
    I am new to Dreamweaver and therefore would appreciate a bit more help with the issues you identified.
    I did replace the doctype. As for removing the menu from a table and putting it into a div, would you be able to identify in the code below how I would do that?  Thanks

  • Spry In A Table

    Hi I have a table with a Vertical Spry Menu inside of one of
    the cells, when the amount of text in another bordering cell is
    taller than the spry menu the spry menu moves down to the center of
    the table. I was wondering if there was a way to make my menu
    stationary at the top of the cell or have the menu move down as the
    user scrolls down? Thank you, Ben Lahue.

    thank you for your response, if you visit

    it is running off of my home server so it will normally be up but
    sometime not, i have a table and would like the spry menu to scroll
    down the page as the user scrolls down or to be stationary at the
    top
    here is the code of my page if that will help:(there is a
    large amount of text in the center column i had to omit)

  • Quick Spry Menu Question

    I am having CSS issues trying to center a basic horizontal spry menu inside a div tag.
    To keep it simple:
    I have a 990px wide x 40px high Div Tag for my mainNav menu.
    I created a quick horizontal menu using the spry widget... with 7 boxes.
    The menu of 7 boxes is currently left justified within the Div.  I want it to auto center within the Div.  I have tried changing almost every pre-CSS ID in the Spry horizontal menu using AUTO margins for the left and right and I can't get any of them to center then entire menu within the overall Div Tag.
    Please help.
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal.li is floated left so the boxes are side by side... but no matter which CSS ID I change the margins to auto on left and right nothing seems to work.
    Do I need to create a new CSS rule targeting something different to get the entire menu to center properly?
    Thanks for the help
    Tim

    Alter the spry css. If you declare a width of 700px and set margin: 0 auto; (as shown below) then each of your 7 links will be 100px wide and you'll have 145px either side. 990px - 700px = 290px /2 = 145px.
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal
        margin: 0;
        padding: 0;
        list-style-type: none;
        font-size: 100%;
        cursor: default;
        width: 700px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    Updated: You should also set the below selector to 100px (or whatever you require. But obviously make sure the total width of all the links adds up to the width you set the above css selector to. In this case 700px). This determines the width of your links.

  • Spry menu bar changed since I tried to split cells in a table! Help!

    I am VERY new to web design, so I apologize in advance for being ignorant.  I am trying to learn!
    I had inserted a spry menu bar that looked fine and even tested fine!
    I subsequently tried to split a section of my table in the web page in order to have 3 columns of centered text.  The first time I did this, the spry menu bar became vertical even though it is listed as horizontal.  I looked up a forum answer, copied the code from the suggestion, and that seemed to fix the problem (although I still don't know what EXACTLY happened)
    I tried to split the table again (I had undone everything prior to this), only this time, the spry menu bar is located outside the page in the left hand corner where my background (I have a wrapper) is.  I tried opening another page where I already had a nice spry menu bar, and it did the same thing!! This makes me think it is the CSS sheet for the menu bar that was modified somehow when I split the table.  I'm pasting the CSS here below, so if anyone sees any issues that might cause this problem, please let me know!! I have been working for the most part in design view, and haven't really modified the code other than to put a wrapper in and a facebook like button, which I've now lost in the slitting cells catastrophe.  Thanks in advance!!!

    Well, I took a picture of my dreamweaver screen, so you can see what I am looking at...
    You can see that the spry menu bar shows up in the top left corner in my design view, but on the website, it is located in the correct place! Maybe it is a Dreamweaver problem??? This happened when I tried to split the cell underneath the section that says "Let NOLA Scribes help you!" into 5 cells so that I could insert 5 differnet pictures and captions. Now, when I open the other linked pages in Dreamweaver, it does the same thing! I'm using an older version of Dreamweaver, but from what I read, that shouldn't be an issue.  Thanks in advance for your help!

  • How to remove empty space in CSS table and move spry menu bar?

    Hello! I created www.stonecreekha.com about a year ago basically by watching youtube tutorials and haven't done much with it since so I've forgotten everything! In IE7, everything appears as it should; but in Firefox and IE8, the spry menu bar is positioned slightly higher than it should be (it slightly cuts off the foot of the golfer) and there is an empty space between the navigation bar and the photo. The source code can be viewed from the website. Here are some pics:
    IE7 - how it is supposed to look:
    IE8:
    Firefox:
    Dreamweaver:
    So basically, I need to know how to remove that empty space between the navigation bar and the picture, and how to move the spry menu bar down a few pixels, in a way that it looks correct in IE8 and Firefox, and preferably IE7 as well.
    P.S. I'm a noob so if you could be as specific as possible on what to do in Dreamweaver I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

    I belive it's because of the -minus margin being used on the navbar, that you will need to use a negative margin to bring up both the left and right bodyArea divs.
    Try :       margin-top: -18px;  on both divs.  You may need to play around with that to get it more precise.
    Again, not sure what effect that has on IE as I can't test it.
    If it affects IE, then you may need to feed IE a conditional comment for the placement of those divs.

  • Spry Menu not working correctly

    Hopefully this is the right part of the forum to post this question, if not, I apologize.
    I have created a site in dreamweaver and am using a single Spry Menu Bar. I have read tons of forum postings about Drop down menus not working in IE, however, mine don't work in any browser or in the Live View either. I have a feeling it has something to do with either the div containing the menu bar or the sizing, but I can't tell.  Please help.

    Any help is appreciated.

    You do not have a constructor for the menu bar as in
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var MenuBar1 = new Spry.Widget.MenuBar("MenuBar1", {imgDown:"SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarDownHover.gif", imgRight:"SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarRightHover.gif"});
    </script>
    There are too many mistakes in the JS outside of the Spry Menu Bar. Have a look at the following which includes all errors, not just the JS
    Validation Output:   117 Errors
      Line 21, Column 38: character "&" is the first character of a delimiter but occurred as data   var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=… ✉
    This message may appear in several cases:
    You tried to include the "<" character in your page: you should escape it as "&lt;"
    You used an unescaped ampersand "&": this may be valid in some contexts, but it is recommended to use "&amp;", which is always safe.
    Another possibility is that you forgot to close quotes in a previous tag.
      Line 21, Column 40: cannot generate system identifier for general entity "i" … var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=… ✉
    An entity reference was found in the document, but there is no reference by that name defined. Often this is caused by misspelling the reference name, unencoded ampersands, or by leaving off the trailing semicolon (;). The most common cause of this error is unencoded ampersands in URLs as described by the WDG in "Ampersands in URLs".
    Entity references start with an ampersand (&) and end with a semicolon (;). If you want to use a literal ampersand in your document you must encode it as "&amp;" (even inside URLs!). Be careful to end entity references with a semicolon or your entity reference may get interpreted in connection with the following text. Also keep in mind that named entity references are case-sensitive; &Aelig; and &aelig; are different characters.
    If this error appears in some markup generated by PHP's session handling code, this article has explanations and solutions to your problem.
    Note that in most documents, errors related to entity references will trigger up to 5 separate messages from the Validator. Usually these will all disappear when the original problem is fixed.
      Line 21, Column 40: general entity "i" not defined and no default entity … var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=… ✉
    This is usually a cascading error caused by a an undefined entity reference or use of an unencoded ampersand (&) in an URL or body text. See the previous message for further details.
      Line 21, Column 41: reference not terminated by REFC delimiter …var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=x… ✉
    If you meant to include an entity that starts with "&", then you should terminate it with ";".  Another reason for this error message is that you inadvertently created an entity by failing to escape an "&" character just before this text.
      Line 21, Column 41: reference to entity "i" for which no system identifier could be generated …var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=x… ✉
    This is usually a cascading error caused by a an undefined entity reference or use of an unencoded ampersand (&) in an URL or body text. See the previous message for further details.

    You have used the element named above in your document, but the document type you are using does not define an element of that name. This error is often caused by:
    incorrect use of the "Strict" document type with a document that uses frames (e.g. you must use the "Frameset" document type to get the "<frameset>" element),
    by using vendor proprietary extensions such as "<spacer>" or "<marquee>" (this is usually fixed by using CSS to achieve the desired effect instead).
    by using upper-case tags in XHTML (in XHTML attributes and elements must be all lower-case).
      Line 21, Column 51: character "&" is the first character of a delimiter but occurred as data …,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=x.oSrc; ✉

    SpryMenuBar.js
    This file handles the JavaScript for Spry Menu Bar.  You should have no need
    to edit this file.  Some highlights of the MenuBar object is that timers are
    used to keep submenus from showing up until the user has hovered over the parent
    menu item for some time, as well as a timer for when they leave a submenu to keep
    showing that submenu until the timer fires.

    You don't need to upgrade your software.  But if you're struggling with Spry, IMO you should cut your losses and switch to something better for the longrun.
    If you have a budget to work with, I highly recommend Project Seven's Pop-Menu Magic 3.  It's easy to use in DW CS4, 5, 6 or CC.  More importantly, it's bullet proof and works in all devices.

    If you don't have a budget to work with, you can roll your own menus with jQuery plugins.  A bit more effort on your part, but they perform better than Spry.

  • Spry Menu Bar acting crazy

    I am not a coder and have used DW in the past to create relatively simple websites. I have a client who needs a horizontal nav bar with one of the buttons prompting a drop-down menu. First tried this using DM8 and then discovered the drop down menu behavior feature doesn't work in a template. So upgraded to DW CS5. Started to work with the Spry menu bar feature and was learning how to change font color, background color, hover color, add menu items, etc.... I noticed that whenever I tried inserted a new Spry menu bar it had the attributes of the most recent menu bar I created.
    After working with the CSS menu I noticed that there seemed to be a division in each menu bar cell -- a small rectangular shape that I couldn't highlight but would affect how the bar looked in a browser. It almost looked like cell divisions in a table. The bar is horizontal with the text centered LtoR and top to bottom, but there was more space at the bottom of the menu bar due to this added "bar". Then when I inserted a new Spry menu I could barely see it. The menu, which included the default 4 fields/ buttoms was literally about 1" wide on my screen. I tried keying in a new pixel width and nothing would help until I got up to 900px.
    To make an already long story short, the Spry feature is completely screwed up. Is there a preference I can trash to at least re-set it to how it was before I somehow screwed it up?
    Any tips would be great.

    You can delete the Spry support files from your Files Panel, thus eliminating the problem code.
    Spry Menu 2.0 files use a different naming convention. You edit the menu styles inside Widget Browser's visual editor then save/export files to your local site folder.
    The support files for Spry Menu 2.0 (aka Spry UI-1.7) look like this:
    <link type='text/css' href='Spry-UI-1.7/css/Menu/basic/SpryMenuBasic.css' rel='stylesheet'/>
    <script type='text/javascript' src='Spry-UI-1.7/includes/SpryMenu.js'></script>
    <script type='text/javascript' src='Spry-UI-1.7/includes/plugins/MenuBar2/SpryMenuBarKeyNavigationPlugin.js'></script>
    <script type='text/javascript' src='Spry-UI-1.7/includes/plugins/MenuBar2/SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js'></script>

  • Spry menu bar not visible in live view

    Hi everyone,
    I was just working on the css for my spry menu bar and went to check it out in the live view, but it is no longer visible. I checked it out in Safari and Firefox to no avail. It looks totally fine in the design view in Dreamweaver. I'm new to web design and I have no idea what I did, but I'm really hoping someone here does! Below is the CSS.

    My guess is that you have a dark background in which case the menu items will not be seen.
    I suggest you have a look here first http://www.dwcourse.com/dreamweaver/ten-commandments-spry-menubars.php#one, then resurrect the original SpryMenuBarVertical.css and change as required.

  • Spry menu bar extra space

    I have put a spry menu bar into Dreamweaver and everything is working except there is a small space on the left of the submenus inside the submenu border.It's kind of hard to see because everything is blue, but if you look closely you can see it.

    Yes, I noticed the left margin after I had posted the reply. I guess I am doing my name proud with old age setting in.
    I left the document and the CSS file as you had it and added the following style rules to correct the situation.
    You can choose
    add these to your document after the link to SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css
    add these to the bottom of SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css
    adjust the style rules within SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css to reflect the changes.
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal li {
    margin-left: 0;
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul li {
    width: 8.2em;
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul ul {
         margin: -5% 0 0 95%;
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul.MenuBarSubmenuVisible ul.MenuBarSubmenuVisible {
         left: auto;
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal a {
         padding: 0.5em 2.75em;
    The highlighted values in the last style rule can/must be adjusted to suit.

  • SPRY menu bar not working in IE 9

    Hey! I recently just finished building my very first website using Dreamweaver CS5.5!  It looks really great and works perfectly in firefox and safari however the SPRY menu bar does not work in IE 8 or 9. Does anyone know what i can do to fix this without messing up how the website looks in firefox and safari?
    thanks,
    Toby

    SpryMenuBar.js
    This file handles the JavaScript for Spry Menu Bar.  You should have no need
    to edit this file.  Some highlights of the MenuBar object is that timers are
    used to keep submenus from showing up until the user has hovered over the parent
    menu item for some time, as well as a timer for when they leave a submenu to keep
    showing that submenu until the timer fires.

  • Spry Menu bar wrongly displayed in IE

    Hi,
    on my website i integrated a Spry Menu bar with one Submenu, which really works fine in Firefox. The boxes have a defined width of 124 px.
    My problem is, if you view this site with IE, the drop down menus don´t work and you are asked to activate activeX or scripts. If you do so the whole menu is displayed white unless you roll over the buttons, you can see what actually should be there. Another bug is that the submenus, are oriented horizontally instead of vertically.
    Can anyone help me with this nice IE problem?
    Thanks a lot !

    Hi Ben,
    thanks a lot for your great help. I integrated your recommendations in my sprymenubarhorizontal.css file and uploaded it.
    When i preview the site in the browser (Dreamweaver -> Preview in Iexplorer) it all looks like it should.
    However when i uploaded the new css file, the change is not visible. It´s still the old mistake.
    What am i doing wrong? What i also wonder about is, that the css file has a size of 6.554 Bytes. When i upload it, it only has 6.353 bytes.
    Can this be correct? Also the SpryMenuBar.js files are different in size.
    Do you have any idae what the problem here is?
    Thanks again !
    Add: I just recognized that also my html. files are different in size. So i guess this is normal. But where is the mistake hiding? I´courious
    Or could you pleas check again from your pc in iexplore? Thanks

  • Spry Menu Bar 2.0 (1.0) - Handling of widget generated CSS, placement and rendering problems in CSS

    Hello:
    I wanted to repost my question to re-frame the issue based on what I have learned thus far.
    I am working on a website that has been developed using the Spry Menu Bar Framework UI (2.0) I.0, that has some peculiar rendering problems that affect IE 6 in particular.  The CSS is reprinted below.
    In particular, when I post the widget generated CSS in the head as it is orginally situated by the framework, the menu bar works fine.  However, it seemed to me that I should be able to reduce page weight (an important consideration considering my target population) by placing it in the general style sheet governing the entire site.
    When I place the styles at the beginning of the style sheet the menu doesn't render at all in any of the browsers (IE 6+, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Netscape, etc.) as it conflicts with the general rules governing links that appear later in the style sheet.  When I place the styles specific to the Menu bar at the end of the style sheet, then the menu bar renders properly in all browsers except IE 6.
    The odd thing is that the only way to ensure that the menu bar works in IE 6 is to keep the menu related styles in the head of each page.  This raises problems related to page weight (not an insurmountable consideration if no other solution can be found) but still an issue.  Likewise I need to support IE 6, again given the target audience/population.  The issue obviously has something to do with specificity, but I am not certain that is the only consideration at work here.  I have not tried the !important selector in regard to the menu, as IE 6 seems to only partially support this.
    Thanks in advance for any advice or insight that can be provided.  Thanks in particular to Martin for his contributions to my earlier question related to this issue.
    Steve Webster.
    The CSS governing the horizontal menu bar is as follows:  (currently the following CSS is embedded in the head of the web page)
    <style type="text/css">
    /*  -- Begins Spry Menu Widget 2.0 (1.0) Horizontal menu bar Custom styles --  */
    /* BeginOAWidget_Instance_2141544: #MenuBar */
    /* Settable values for skinning a Basic menu via presets. If presets are not sufficient, most skinning should be done in
       these rules, with the exception of the images used for down or rightpointing arrows, which are in the file SpryMenuBasic.css
         These assume the following widget classes for menu layout (set in a preset)
       .MenuBar - Applies to all menubars - default is horizontal bar, allsubmenus are vertical - 2nd level subs and beyond are pull-right.
        .MenuBarVertical - vertical main bar; all submenus are pull-right.
       You can also pass in extra classnames to set your desired top levelmenu bar layout. Normally, these are set by using a preset.
        They only apply to horizontal menu bars:
            MenuBarLeftShrink - The menu bar will be horizontally 'shrinkwrapped' to be just large enough to hold its items, and left aligned
            MenuBarRightShrink - Just like MenuBarLeftShrink, but right aligned
            MenuBarFixedLeft - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedLeft', and left aligned.
            MenuBarFixedCentered -  - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedCentered',
                            and centered in its parent container.
            MenuBarFullwidth - Grows to fill its parent container width.
        In general, all rules specified in this file are prefixed by #MenuBar so they only apply to instances of the widget inserted along
       with the rules. This permits use of multiple MenuBarBasic widgets onthe same page with different layouts. Because of IE6 limitations,
        there are a few rules where this was not possible. Those rules are so noted in comments.
    #MenuBar  {
        background-color:transparent;
       font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; /* Specify fonts on onMenuBar and subMenu MenuItemContainer, so MenuItemContainer,
                                                    MenuItem, and MenuItemLabel
                                                    at a given level all use same definition for ems.
                                                    Note that this means the size is also inherited to child submenus,
                                                    so use caution in using relative sizes other than
                                                    100% on submenu fonts. */

    /* IE6 rules - you can delete these if you do not want to support IE6 */
    /* A note about multiple classes in IE6.
    * Some of the rules above use multiple class names on an element forselection, such as "hover" (MenuItemHover) and "has a subMenu"(MenuItemWithSubMenu),
    * giving the selector '.MenuItemWithSubMenu.MenuItemHover'.
    * Unfortunately IE6 does not support using mutiple classnames in aselector for an element. For a selector such as '.foo.bar.baz', IE6ignores
    * all but the final classname (here, '.baz'), and sets thespecificity accordingly, counting just one of those classs assignificant. To get around this
    * problem, we use the plugin in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js to generate compound classnames for IE6, such as 'MenuItemWithSubMenuHover'.
    * Since there are a lotof these needed, the plugin does not generate the extra classes formodern browsers, and we use the CSS2 style mutltiple class
    * syntax for that. Since IE6 both applies rules where
    * it should not, and gets the specificity wrong too, we have to order rules carefully, so the rule misapplied in IE6 can be overridden.
    * So, we put the multiple class rule first. IE6 will mistakenly apply this rule.  We follow this with the single-class rule that it would
    * mistakenly override, making sure the  misinterpreted IE6 specificity is the same as the single-class selector, so the latter wins.
    * We then create a copy of the multiple class rule, adding a '.SpryIsIE6' class as context, and making sure the specificity for
    * the selector is high enough to beat the single-class rule in the "both classes match" case. We place the IE6 rule at the end of the
    * css style block to make it easy to delete if you want to drop IE6 support.
    * If you decide you do not need IE6 support, you can get rid of these,as well as the inclusion of the SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.jsscript.
    * The 'SpryIsIE6' class is placed on the HTML element by the script in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js if the browser isInternet Explorer 6. This avoids the necessity of IE conditionalcomments for these rules.

    Hi Nancy:
    The specific code that I am referring to is the CSS code governing the styling of the spry menu widget that only works in IE 6 if, and only if, it remains in the head of the web page.  If removed and placed in a stylesheet, the IE plugins fail to compensate for the IE 6 "gap" bug.  As I said, it doesn't make sense to me that, assuming specificity is addressed, that these can not be included in an external style sheet.  I am looking for a) an explanation why they must remain embedded in the web page; and 2) any means by which I might be able to export them.
    I will reproduce the specific css style (code) below:  it should also be visable through reveal source --
    Thanks again, Steve Webster.
    The CSS governing the horizontal menu bar is as follows:  (currently the following CSS is embedded in the head of the web page)
    <style type="text/css">
    /*  -- Begins Spry Menu Widget 2.0 (1.0) Horizontal menu bar Custom styles --  */
    /* BeginOAWidget_Instance_2141544: #MenuBar */
    #MenuBar  {
        background-color:transparent;
       font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; /* Specify fonts on onMenuBar and subMenu MenuItemContainer, so MenuItemContainer,
                                                    MenuItem, and MenuItemLabel
                                                    at a given level all use same definition for ems.

    * Some of the rules above use multiple class names on an element forselection, such as "hover" (MenuItemHover) and "has a subMenu"(MenuItemWithSubMenu),
    * giving the selector '.MenuItemWithSubMenu.MenuItemHover'.
