Controlling Stopwatch in Program using Serial DTR/DTS/RTS

Hi,
I have a device which I have attached to my PC using a RS232 to USB connection. It is a 9 port pin serial push button type device. Pin 4 is the DTR with a resistor in the circuit. Pin 7 is the RTS with the switch, and Pin 6 is the DSR for the circuit.
I'd like to set the DTR to High, and set the RTS to low, and read the DSR state of the device in my Labview program.
What I'd like to build is a simple stopwatch in my program. This stopwatch should execute when the main program starts, and be continuously reading the DSR state of my com device. When it changes it should stop the stopwatch.
Can someone guide me with this?
I've attached my program thus far, and need some help. The program right is now is just executing vibratory motors through an Arduino MEGA.
Thanks!

Few more updates...I'm not quite there yet..
What I need to do is make the program only record the time between when a motor comes on, and when the user pushes the button changing the DSR state to 'Unasserted'. I think this would affectively give me the reaction time it took between the two events...
Alternatively, I was thinking of perhaps having a separate elapsed time counter from the start of the button, and then stop and spit out the time it took for the motor to actually turn on (since there is a delay from when the program turns on to actually communicating with the device. So I need to effectively subtract this time out of the equation when the user is told to be ready and press the button.
Can someone please help me?

  • I am curious if other programs use the F7 ket for the Caret control?

I apparently solved my scrolling problem with the F7 key. I also noticed a big improvement with my mouse control in another program.
I am there curious if other programs use that key for control of the caret function.

Yes they do. What I know IE8 uses the F7 function.

  • How do i open and control other programs using labview?

I'm presently trying to use labview to try to open and operate another program, but having much difficulty. The external program i'm using is called the Foundation program.
This Foundation program will use VHDL programming to create a virtual chip and then synthesising it.This program will then simulate the output of this VHDL program to verify that it is working as desired. Then the last stage is to download the whole VHDL program into a FPGA chip using a xilinx cable.
All this need to be done using a labview program - to open the Foundation program and then extract the saved file and then to execute the download command to cause the VHDL program to be downloaded onto the FPGA chip. How do i go
about doing all this? What is the first step i must do.Also all this have to be done thru networking..looks like its too difficult..I really need help.
    grays

I haven't done VHDL so pardon my ignorance.
LabVIEW can call external DLL via "Call Library Function" or C programs via "Code Interface Node", both located in "Advanced" function.
If your program is a DOS program, use "System Exec.vi" found in "Communication" function. If you need to format your DOS command prior to sending it, use the "Format Into String" function in "String" function palette.
Lastly, if you're trying to extract data, assuming it is text, use "File I/O" functions. If the data is binary, use "File I/O -> Binary File VIs".
Hope that answers most of your questions.

  • Problem in using serial port.

I am using serial port to get data from a fusion splicer. The number of bytes at the port is 4096 but the read buffer of VISA read is empty. I am reading the same number of bytes. Can any one tell me what is the maximum size of VISA Read buffer? I am trying to put the contents of the buffer in a file. I am using labVIEW 6.1 on linux.I am also attaching the VI.
I also noticed this problem...If I read the number of bytes in the serial buffer many times, sometimes it reads it as 0 and I have to keep trying until it reads this 4096 bytes.
    Thanx for any help.

    Hey Viji,
In your application it looks like you are just checking to see how many bytes are at the serial port. Is it possible that your application is check for the serial data at the port before the data actually gets there. If you are looping this code as a subVI or just running it over and over it is possible that one of the iterations could occur faster than your device can write the information to the bus. In this instance you are checking the number of bytes at the port and there might not be any there yet. In this case the port reads 0 as you have designed it.
If you want the read function to wait and always read 4096 then don't wire the bytes at port to the read function. Just wire a constant/control equal to 4096 to the read function instead o
f the bytes at port. In this case, if there are not any bytes at the port the read function will wait for the bytes to show up or until the timeout period is reached.
I would also, suggest lowering your time to something more reasonable, because if your instrument quits transmitting your application is going to wait for 33 minutes. That is a long time for a program to hang.
    I hope this helps out.

  • Error 37 using serial port with an executable file

    Hi all,

  • Save, edit boolean controlled stopwatch

    Hellow Fellow LabVIEW users
The attached is a stopwacth corresponding to this earlier forum post.
    http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Reentrant-Boolean-Array-Controlled-stopwatch-SubVI/m-p/1334916#M5427...
I want to add to the solution and make my VI do the following
    a) With each iteration, I want the VI to save the values in each individual stopwatch, so even when the program closes and is reopened the values are intact.
    b) When I press the "Edit B4" boolean an "Edit Time" control and "Edit and Save" boolean control array comes up. I want to be able to change the values of the original indicator array when I press the "Edit and Save" Boolen as well as revert back to the original array with the new values.
    c) I want these new Array values to be saved with the new iteration.
I believe I should use an event structure.I also plan on using the SubVI 12 different times. Please let me know how I shuld proceed in this regard. Your help as always is greatly appreciated and needed. Please let me know if you need further clarification.

Drew answered the question about saving between runs, but I think your problem is much simpler
    mhaque wrote:

What do you mean by "intact"? Should the program continue at the times where it stopped of or should it account for the time where the program did not run? For example if you close the program for one hour and start it again, should all active timers be one hour higher?
In this case you simply want to write the current contents of the start ticks feedback node and the boolean states to a flat binary file whenever they change (probably not very often). Use a file with a fixed name right next to the executable. Open the file once, then use lowlevel file IO for the duration of the program run and close when the program ends.
When the program starts, you can use the "first run?" primitive to reload the data into the shift registers as needed.
Make the subVI a proper action engine with several modes (init, normal run, overwrite timers, end, etc.). Remember, to customize the timers, you need to overwrite the shift regsiter contents inside the subVI.
Your use of property nodes is a bit clumsy. You don't need to write to all these property nodes with every iteration of the loop, they only need to be written when the boolean input changes (property nodes are relatively expensive because they force synchronous execution). Instead of the property nodes, you could just use a tab control with two tabs (e.g. run|edit) one containing the timers and one the edit time array. This eliminates the boolean switch and all property nodes.
What's the maximum duration of a program run? If it exceeds 10^32ms, you probably need to switch to timestamps instead.
Use a simple event structure in the toplevel program with the bulk of the code in a 1000ms timeout case. Add cases for "stop:value changed" and "edit time: value changed".

    Hi,
There are two ways to control this problem; 1) User Exit    2) BADI
    1) User-Exit
    Enhancement: MBCF0002
    Function module: EXIT_SAPMM07M_001
Code for your copy pasting in the source code of ZXMBCU02.
Remember to activate the program. In SMOD enter the enhancement, press F8 and then click on activate button.
    *& Include ZXMBCU02
data it_afvv like afvv occurs 0 with header line.
    tables: afvv, afko, afpo.
    data tot_gr like mseg-menge.
    If i_mseg-bwart = '101' and i_mseg-aufnr is not initial.
select single * from afko where aufnr = i_mseg-aufnr.
select * from afvv into table it_afvv where aufpl = afko-aufnr.
    sort it_afvv by aplzl descending.
    read table it_afvv index 1.
select single lmnga from afvv into afvv-lmnga where aufpl = afko-aufnr and aplzl = it_afvv-aplzl.
select single * from afpo where aufnr = i_mseg-aufnr.
    tot_gr = afpo-wemng + i_mseg-menge.
    if tot_gr > afvv-lmnga.
MESSAGE 'GR Qty greater than Confirmation Qty of the last operation' TYPE 'E'.
    Endif.
    endif.
    2) BADI
Implement the BADI for WORKORDER_GOODSMVT in this there is method
    MANUAL_GOODS_RECEIPT under that
    write you code here
    if_ex_workorder_goodsmvt~manual_goods_receipt.
    endmethod.
    Technical Logic
Check the confirmation qty in AFVV table with production order get the last operation confirmation qty and subtract the Delivered qty. If this is Greater than or equal to the GR Qty entered in the screen allow the posting or through Error.

    Hi,
Do same as suggested by Ramesh. Add one user command button after clicking that do the looping and call new screen.

  • Client/Server in one program (using multiple threads)?

Is there some examples out there of how to use a client and server in a single program using separate threads? Also, is it possible to start a third thread to control the packets, such as drop a random or specified number of packets (or match on specific data in a packet)?

Just trying to have a client send udp packets to a server (all on the same machine running from the same program) and want to be able to drop packets coming from the client side to the server side.
    E.g.,
Here's an example that I found here: http://compnet.epfl.ch/tps/tp5.html
    import java.io.<strong>;

                        + request.getAddress().getHostAddress() + ": " + line);
}I'm looking to do the "processing loop" in a separate thread, but I'd also like to do the client in a separate thread
So you're saying, just put the client code in a separate class and start the thread and that's it? As far as the packet rate loss thread, is this possible to do in another thread?

  • How to move the selected rows from a  table control in dialog programming

see below example, I have added INSERT option after DELETE option, you can use same table or you can use differnt table by populating into that table and insert into the db table. If you want to use same internal table then use below code

    insert into table from itab.

I pull fiftyfour bytes of data from MicroProcessor's EEPROM using serial port. It works fine. I then send a request for 512 bytes and my "read" goes into loop condition, no bytes are delivered and system is lost

    Hello,
You mention that you send a string to the microprocessor that tells it how many bytes to send. Instead of requesting 512 bytes, try reading 10 times and only requesting about 50 bytes at a time.
If that doesnt help, try directly communicating with your microprocessor through HyperTerminal. If you are not on a Windows system, please let me know. Also, if you are using an NI serial board instead of your computers serial port, let me know.
In Windows XP, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, and select HyperTerminal.
Enter a name for the connection and click OK.
In the next pop-up dialog, choose the COM port you are using to communicate with your device and click OK.
    In the final pop
-up dialog, set the communication settings for communicating with your device.
Type the same commands you sent through LabVIEW and observe if you can receive the first 54 bytes you mention. Also observe if data is returned from your 512 byte request or if HyperTerminal just waits.
If you do not receive the 512 byte request through HyperTerminal, your microprocessor is unable to communicate with your computer at a low level. LabVIEW uses the same Windows DLLs as HyperTerminal for serial communication. Double check the instrument user manual for any additional information that may be necessary to communicate.
Please let me know the results from the above test in HyperTerminal. We can then proceed from there.

  • New "Windows Programming Using Java" Website

Our newly created "Windows Programming Using Java" website (http://fivedots.coe.psu.ac.th/~ad/winJava/) is for programmers who want to extend Java's capabilities on Windows XP and/or Vista, but aren't sure where to start. One of the drawbacks of Java's portability is that many Java programmers have a rather sketchy knowledge of Windows-specific programming.
We plan to explain how Java applications can utilize Windows application software, OS features, and hardware beyond the reach of Java's standard libraries. A variety of Java/Windows programming techniques will be explained, including:
    * Java's employment of the Win32 API via C, JNI, and J/Invoke.
    * Java's utilization of Window's Command Line Interface (CLI) and batch files, accessed through Java's Runtime, ProcessBuilder, and Process classes.
    * Java and Windows object-based scripting, centered around the use of VBScript, Windows Script Host (WSH), and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).
    * Java interoperability with COM, including hosting of ActiveX controls in Swing containers using jacoZoom.
This website is a work in progress, with four chapters available for download at the moment. We'll be adding more regularly, and would love feedback on what we're doing.
    Thanks,

Hi, I am looking the similar kind of requirement that you had done.. Do you have any more details on the code that is working for you . All i need is if the user logs in successfully in windows, the the app should be accessible. Please let me know if you have the code with you on this problem.
    Thanks in advance
"what i meant is the we b applications running in my system, when i access the application iam able to to login automatically with windows authentication and now in case of other users following process happened:"
