Convert a Mobile (PHD) account to a local one...

I currently retired my Snow Leopard Server in a small home office.  There are currently three client computers.  On each of them, the user accounts are all mobile or PHD.  I would like to simply convert them to become the local one on each user's respective computer.  Is there an easy way to do this?

Try this.
Delete user from local machine with the option of (do not delete user home folder).
Rename user home folder to original home folder name in the terminal. (You will see the folder but it will be called olduseraccount (Deleted) and you can not change the name in finder.
In terminal change the directory to the user folder cd /Users
sudo mv oldaccountname\ \(Deleted\) oldaccountname
Create new user with original short name, you will see an option to use the existing home folder. Click use and you can then log out of the local admin and then log into the account.
You may have to log out and back in if you do not at first have the ability to make a new folder to the desktop.

  • How can I convert an active iCloud account to a child one?

    Hi,
I want to use Family share with my family members. However I do not want them to buy products without permission (as it is me paying for them). I see this option only exists for child accounts.
Is there a way to change an existing account to a child account? Or forcing an adult account to ask permission?

Go to appleid.apple.com to manage the ID, sign in and select to the Name, ID and Email Addresses section, then change the birth date on the bottom right.  At the present time you may not be able to enter the correct birth date, but others have had success changing the year to 2000, or the date to 1/1/2001, both of which will have child ID status.

  • Convert a mobile account back to a regular network account?

I need to somehow convert a mobile network account profile on a Mac to a non-mobile account -- ie, a regular network account. The user obviously has multiple settings associated with his existing profile and we'd like to salvage those if at all possible.

Dont just untick the LDAPv3 Plug in, you have to
select Configure and Delete the configuration, save
    the changes then quit.
    I did that.
    Navigate to /Library/Managed
Preferences and remove any preferences there.
Did that too. But whenever I log back in. They are there again.
Next lauch NetInfo Manager in /Applications/Utilities,
click on the lock and authenticate, select Config and
    delect mcx_cache.
I did this also. There were actually 2 mcx_cache folders. One in the /config/mcx_cache and another at /mcx_cache. I deleted both of them.
    Next select System Preferences >
Accounts and delete the Mobile Account thats there –
it should have Mobile Account beneath it.
This is the part I can't do because I need that account. If I delete the mobile user, I lose that account and I can't do that. Any suggestions here?

  • Convert a mobile account into a local account

    Hello everyone!
I originally had to convert local accounts to mobile accounts, but the mobile accounts are not working for us. Seems to be unstable at times and just not what we're looking for. Now I want to change these mobile accounts back to local accounts. Oooor if there is a way to disable sync services, that would be fine.
I took the user out of the group that had our mobile account preferences, but the user is still backing up to the server.
    Thanks

The way we do it is basically the same in either direction with the basic goal of retaining the user's data and settings:
    1) delete the user from the local machine, but leaving the home folder as is (the home folder will be changed to +user (deleted)+ )
    2) recreate the user account either as a new local account (from system prefs), or a new mobile account (by logging in and creating the account, then logout) as required.
    3) as an admin, delete the default home folder that was created when the account was created. I usually do this from the command line : sudo rm -rf /Users/user
    4) again from the command line, change the name of the home folder : sudo mv /Users/+user (deleted)+ /Users/user
    5) finally change the permissions on the home folder: sudo chown -R /Users/+user user+
Test, it should be good from there.

  • PHD Accounts stuck at blue screen when outside our network.

I have approx. 200 computers in a 1:1 program, the users are in groups by school in WGM and each group has applied preferences. The users work fine when they are at school however when they go home they get stuck on a blue screen for widely varying amounts of time, from 5 minutes to "hours" some of which the students claim never get to the login screen.
I've searched like mad and seen a lot of blue screen issues but none linked to PHD accounts being out of network range. I've also seen lots of issues with long login delays after having entered valid login credentials but none that closely resemble my issue.
    The Setup:
    Servers-
ODM - 10.5.4 2x2 GHz dual core intel Xeon 4GB
    ODR1 - 10.5.4 2GHz PowerPC G5 2GB
    ODR2 - 10.5.4 2GHz PowerPC G5 2GB
ODM & ODR1 are on the same subnet serving the main office, elem. and MS
ODR2 is on its own for the High School.
    Clients-
    Macbook A1181's 10.5.4 2GHz Intel Core Duo 1GB
The laptops in question are all bound to ODR2 and both the server and the clients are in the same subnet while in school everything works fine.

I particularily like the part about AD and Password Server being "set to load lazily"... trust me I didn't set anything on the server to be lazy intentionally. Hopefully this is enough info for someone with some more experience with log files to make sense of it all. TIA

Hi jzahra, I have experienced this behaviour. As your users report booting at home used to result in blue screen, also working wired would do it too. I worked around it by one of these( sorry it was a while ago) 1,logged in on work networksite and then took off-site changed network via airport menu.2,Booted and let sit overnight -as it did finally get to the login screen. I did have a couple of archive and installs and an install between these issues. You could also try turning airport off while on site and log off and login with profile recently cached and airport still off.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers.

  • Questions about Mobile User accounts

I'm having some trouble fully grasping Mobile User accounts and hoping someone could clarify whether they would be appropriate in my situation.
We have some non-"mobile" users that solely use one machine and we would like them to continue to use their local hard drives. Is a "Mobile" account the solution?
Second, if a user is already using an independent Mac that is not bound to any server..is it possible to bind it, create a mobile account, then sync local with network home folders such that all of the current data in their existing Home folder is added to the Network Home folder? or must the account be started from scratch?
Lastly, What if we did not want all that data synched to the Network Home because there is simply too much of it. Can we still enjoy the benefits of Network login while certain files are local (I assume this is what the synching prefs are all about?!?) Users use same machine for 99% of their work. only occasionally would it be nice to provide them access to their mail, etc from a different client
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I'll take some broad swipes at this and let the smarter people come fill in the details.
We have a true 1:1 setup in our office and have moved to PHDs as a means of protecting against downtime. The thinking is that we will have a spare machine lying around with our base installation ready to go. If a user's machine fails we'll replace it with the spare machine, let it sync the user directory from the server, and we're back in business. It's no substitute for a real backup system, but it potentially avoids having to run a restore from your backups. It also reduces network traffic compared to plain networked homes, and still lets your users work if the server goes down, but provides the benefits of centralized management. John DeTroye wrote a nice article about this.
If you've already got data on your "client" Mac you will need to move it onto the server. PHDs will download data from the server to the client on the first sync, but will not upload a complete home directory from the client to an empty directory on the server. You'll find some posts in this forum discussing how people have gone about migrating data prior to that first sync.
WGM allows you to establish exclusions for stuff you don't want to sync.
One thing to watch out for in the scenario you describe is the so-called "rabbit effect." Assume Bob uses Mac1 as his primary machine. If one day he logs into Mac2 his home directory will be downloaded to Mac2. Once he returns to Mac1 he'll still be cluttering up Mac2 with his data. If he logs into Mac3 the next day and Tom and Sue are also periodically logging into different machines, you can see how you'll end up with a mess pretty quickly.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do you set up Mail without a mobile me account?

I am trying to set up my sister's new Macbook so she can send and receive mail.
She does not have a mobile me or .mac account.
She had been using an older powerbook, using Safari and a yahoo account.
Now, with this new Macbook in Snow Leopard, I want her to be able to use Mail but am unable figure out what settings to use.
Her ISP is something called HEMC. On the older machine, in Entourage, the account name looked like this: username@hemc(POP). Though she did not actually use Entoourage, she used web mail (Safari or Firefox and her Yahoo account.
For incoming mail server I have tried mail.yahoo.com; and pop3.yahoo. com; and mail.hemc.com
    None of these work.
    For outgoing I have tried all sorts of variations of smtp. Smtp.yahoo.com; smtp.hemc.com;
Meanwhile, if I use Safari and log in to her mail account there, all is working.
I ran into this before trying to help someone else. This is a snap if you have a mobile me account. But not if you don't.

    Yahoo! Mail Settings
Yahoo Mail offers standard POP3 access for receiving emails incoming through your Yahoo mailbox, by using your favorite email client software. To setup your email client for working with your Yahoo account, you need to select the POP3 protocol and use the following mail server settings:
    Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (port 110)
Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (port 25)
POP Yahoo! Mail Plus email server settings
Yahoo Plus Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 995)
Yahoo Plus Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 465, use authentication)
    Google GMail Settings
The Google GMail service offers email client access for retrieving and sending emails through your Gmail account. However, for security reasons, GMail uses POP3 over an SSL connection, so make sure your email client supports encrypted SSL connections.
Google Gmail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 995)
Outgoing Mail Server - use the SMTP mail server address provided by your local ISP or smtp.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 465)

  • Help - All Contacts deleted after deleting mobile me account on iphone.

I don't know what has happened but all my contacts have gone from my iphone. The only thing I am conscious of doing is deleting the trial mobile me account from the iphone following the expiry of the trial period. Is there any backup on my computer to recover these? I can't see anything obvious in iTunes. Is there any other way of getting them back?

If the internet connection to your MobileMe online address book is lost for whatever reason (in this case you cancelled your MobileMe account so there was no longer an internet connection to your MobileMe online address book), the contacts on your iPhone don't disappear. The contacts are cached locally so if your MobileMe online address book is not available for whatever reason, you still have access to the contacts to place a call, send an MMS, etc.
When deleting the account from your iPhone, all contacts that had been synced over the air with your MobileMe account are deleted from your iPhone - the cache in this situation. When you first turned Contacts on for over the air syncing with your MobileMe account, what happened? If you don't remember, all existing contacts on your iPhone were erased and replaced with your MobileMe online address book. After this, the contacts were being kept synchronized with your MobileMe online address book but not technically stored locally on your iPhone. When you deleted the account, all contacts that had been synced over the air with your MobileMe online address book were deleted with the account.
Since all existing contacts on your iPhone were deleted when first turning Contacts on for over the air syncing with your MobileMe account, where did your MobileMe online contacts originate from? Did your MobileMe online contacts originate from the Address Book on your Mac? If not, they should have and should have been kept synchronized between your MobileMe online address book and your iPhone. If so, your contacts should remain in the Address Book on your Mac and you can sync your iPhone direct with the Address Book on your Mac via the iTunes sync process. This is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.

  • Migrating current mobile user accounts from one OS X Server to another

I have not been able to find ANY answers to my situlaton.
I have a small office that currently has a Mac Server 10.4.11 server running that has many "mobile user" accounts setup.  This was done because we have so many mobile users coming in and out of the office.  When the user comes back they sync their home directory witht th server here.  Works great.
We recently purchased a new Mac Server running 10.7.4.  Set it up as the Open Directory Master.  I unbind from the old server and bind to the new server.  Everything seems to be working just fine except when I go and add a current mobile user to the new server it creates a new user account on the client device (MacBooks) as if the previous user settings didn't exsist.  Since they need to be mobile users and not just network users I haven't been able to find a solution to this problem any where.
Is there a way on the client to tell it to use the old user account stored on the MacBook to use with new mobile user connected to the new server?
Or is there an easier way of doing this that I don't know about?
    Thanks,
    TK

If I understand what you wrote, no.  The reason is this.  If memory serves...  In 10.4.11 accounts were assigned a UID.  In 10.7.x, accounts are assigned a UID and a GUID.  Most everything relies on the GUID at this point.  So, what you have is an account named marysue on the workstation and it is assigned a UID like 1045.  Now you created marysue on the Lion server, but you likely did not recreate the UID to match the old server.  And thus, the UID value is different but more importantly you now have a GUID value like EC0F9357-8EF2-4D3B-B6F3-2E3016400114, that is associated with the account.  So, the user, despite having the same shortname, is different.
In addition, you are working with two different directory systems.  10.4 still used NetInfo (ah, I miss you so).  10.5 and above use DS local flat files, even when bound to an LDAP system.
So, probably the easiest way to do this, provided I understand what you are seeing is the following.  Let's assume the following:
You have a mobile account on a workstation for the user maryjoe with a UID of 1034 that came from the 10.4.11 system.  You have this account cached.  You have a home folder in /Users/maryjoe.  You have now bound to the new server which contains a user named maryjoe likely with a UID of something other than 1034 and with a GUID value that likely did not exist in the old directory system, also with the shortname of maryjoe and a home path of /Users/maryjoe.
So when you log in, you are likely being pathed to /Users/maryjoe, but you are seeing a default Dock and no documents because of permissions.  My guess is that if you used Terminal to view the Users directory you would see something like this (open Terminal and issue the command ls -l /Users/:
    drwxrwxrwt   4 root       wheel  136 Apr 18 21:35 Shared
    drwxr-xr-x+ 14 locadmin  staff  476 Jan 21 7:42 locadmin
    drwxr-xr-x+ 14 1034  staff  476 Mar 21 10:42 maryjoe
Note the folder maryjoe is not owned by maryjoe, it is owned by the UID of maryjoe from the old server.
Ok, so long story short (sorry for the log explanation, especially if you are experiencing something else that I did not get from the post), all you need to do is update the permissions of the home folder.  Do this:
1:  Log in as the local admin
    2:  Open Terminal
    3:  Issue this command:
         sudo chown -R maryjoe /Users/maryjoe
Even with a lot of data in the home folder, this should not take more than a few minutes to complete.
When the command completes, run this command again:  ls -l /Users/
    You should now see
    drwxrwxrwt   4 root       wheel  136 Apr 18 21:35 Shared
    drwxr-xr-x+ 14 locadmin  staff  476 Jan 21 7:42 locadmin
    drwxr-xr-x+ 14 maryjoe  staff  476 Mar 21 10:42 maryjoe
Now try logging in as the user.  With a little luck I divined the issue and this will have you up and running.  Now, I normally will also purge the cached account in /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/ but that might be a bit daunting.  So let's start with the simple process first of ensuring home folder permissions are correct.

  • How do I convert my existing iTunes account to a .mac account?

I am trying to convert my existing iTunes account which uses an Earthlink address. The following is the INSTRUCTIONS from the Apple web site on how to do this.
"I just signed up for .Mac. How do I convert my existing iTunes account to
    my new .Mac account?
We'll be happy to convert your account for you. Please provide your old account name, your new .Mac account name and your billing address in your email. We will also need your explicit permission to reset your password to complete the conversion."
This is the URL where I found those INSTRUCTIONS:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/musicstore/email/
    I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS ABOVE!
I am now on my fifth exchange of emails with iTunes support.
HAS ANYBODY SUCCESSFULLY EXECUTED THESE INSTRUCTIONS? I don't want to lose the ability to play my existing purchased music, but I want to close down Earthlink as my ISP.

  • A method to convert an existing iCloud account to a Child iCloud Account for Family Sharing

I do not see any method by which to convert an existing iCloud account (we have three set up for our kids, all their birthdays are set later than their actual birthdays so we could grab their actual names before they were all gone years ago) to a new Child iCloud Account for use with Family Sharing (namely to be able to take advantage of the new features: Family Calendar, Photostream, 'Ask to Buy' on the Stores, etc. on their own iPad minis.
If this is just not possible under the current scheme, please oh please Apple make this an option - there are probably thousands of others in this same boat, and I refuse to give up my kids' iCloud accounts!

I've read every string and workaround solution on these forums (to date). There's really no good options here.
USER STORY: My kid (age 7) has an iPad 2.  I created an email address for him (which he doesn't know about). I created an apple ID for him (which he also doesn't know or care about) and I set up his Apple ID with my credit card.  In addition I've set up parental controls on the iPad to lock it down and make it more age appropriate.   Over the past year or so it's worked out fine, he sees something he might like, brings the iPad to me and if I approve, I enter the Apple ID Password  and approve the purchase.   After a year of doing this, he has a nice little collection of apps, kid songs, a few movies, etc.   I would like to move my kid over to a legitimate kid account now that Apple has released features that support this.  Currently the ability to convert an account does not exist. Seems like it should be easy to change a birthday, etc.
Almost seems like Apple is penalizing us for getting our kid an iPad last year.
Apple  - Please consider my user story for your upcoming feature enhancements.

  • How many websites can you have under one mobile me account?

I already have a mobile me account with one website that is currently published. I was wanting to make another website under the same account. Is this possible to make two websites on the same account?
    Thanks

Just make sure that you give them all a different name in iWeb when you create them or they will cancel each other out when you publish them.
You cannot give sites the same name in the first place.
If you do, iWeb will revert to the one it had before if you rename a site.
Found out when I gave sites the same name but published them to different servers.
The sitename has to be unique in the domainfile.
Solution is/was to duplicate the domainfiles and edit each separately.

  • Can I sync a single calendar to two separate mobile me accounts

My wife and I have separate dot mac accounts and separate mobil me accounts. We each keep separate work and personal contacts and calendars on our computers and they sync to our separate I phones. We would like to have a single family calendar that will sync automatically through mobil me for entries made by either of us to the others phone, downlinking to our separate computers.
    Is this possible?

Please read this entire post before doing anything, so that you can understand what you need to do.
My wife and I have the same scenario and I have a work around. Here is what we have:
She has an iPhone 3g and a Mac Book. I have an IPhone 3Gs and a Mac Book Pro. I have my Mobile Me account, and she has her own Mobile Me account.
Before you do anything, go to each of your computers and backup both your address books and calenders.
Here is how I have ours sync:
    1) The 2 laptops are both setup under Mobile Me in the System Preferences under my Mobile Me account. In here, I have both laptops setup to sync the address book(s) and the calender(s) but nothing else.
    2) On your computer, import your wifes backed up address book and calenders into your iCal and Address Book on your computer. Make sure that your wifes calender had a different name than yours in the iCal program. I mean make sure that your calender and hers was not both labeled something like "Home". My wifes is labeled "Her Personal" and my calender is labeled "His Personal". You can do the same thing for the Hers and your address books, by putting them in different categories before you back them up and import them.
    3) After these are setup on your computer, then (a) go to System Preferences, and then (b) go to Mobile Me. In Mobile Me (c) click on the "Sync" tab. (d) Click on Advanced at the lower right hand corner of the window. Then (e) click on the Resync Data button. In the next window (f) click on the RIGHT arrow and the click replace. This will send all of the iCal calender(s) and the Address Book(s) to your Mobile Me cloud.
    4) On your wifes computer repeat Step 3. Except, in step (f) click on the LEFT arrow. This will send all of the iCal calender(s) and the Address Book(s) from you Mobile Me cloud to your wifes computer. You are now half way done.
    5) On your iPhone go to Settings. Then go to Mail, Contacts, Calenders and click on your Mobile Me account. Here you will need to turn on Mail Contacts and Calenders.
It will be setup a little different on your wifes iPhone however.
    6) On your wifes iPhone go to Settings. Then go to Mail, Contacts, Calenders and click on her Mobile Me account. Here you need to make sure that only Mail is on. Make sure that Calenders and Contacts is turned off.
    7) Go back to Mail, Contacts, Calenders on your wifes iPhone. Click on Add Account. Here you will need to add YOUR Mobile Me account information.
    8) After you have entered you Mobile Me account information on her phone, go back into Settings and then to Mail, Contacts, Calenders and click on you Mobile Me account again. Under your account on her phone, turn off Mail, but turn on Contacts and Calenders.
    9) Open both the Calenders apps on the 2 iPhones and allow them to update.
    10) Open both the Contacts apps on the 2 iPhones and allow them to update.
You should now be able to keep your contacts and address books in sync on both computers and iPhones, but still be able to keep you individual e-mail accounts in sync on the seperate computers and iPhones. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • Cannot send an email from my alias Mobile Me account from the iPhone.

I have a Mobile Me email account which works perfectly on my Mac and iPhone. I created a an Alias Mobile Me Account on the web.
I am able to create a new email from the alias account on the Mac.
The iPhone will not recognize the alias account, I cannot add it or sync the account.
I cannot send an email from my alias Mobile Me account from the iPhone.

To all frustrated MobileMe alias owners who want to send email from iPhone - please go to the feedback area of the apple.com and leave messages regarding this issue. I had a lengthy conversation with a tech support guy who agreed that this is a needed fix - he said to initiate a grass roots effort - and that by all of us leaving messages it will eventually get attention and fixed. Why would Apple give us the ability to create alias's, use them on mobileme website, on our mac mail programs, but NOT the iPhone, which is the MOBILE device. Silly. Please protest!! Thanks.

    HI,
The Apple IDs from @mac.com and @me.com (Older MobileMe and more recent iCloud Names) are also Valid AIM Screen names.
Any other sort of Apple ID is not a Valid AIM Name.
A Google ID that is associated with Google Mail Account (And has "Talk" enable on your Google Settings) can be used in iChat as  Jabber Name/ID.  (Google Run  Jabber server).
Jabber and AIM are different IM Services and it is not easy or straight forward to add Buddies from one Service to the Buddy List of another.  (As A Starting point consider it "impossible")
iChat 4 and 5 have links to the registration page of @Mac.com here with a "Get an iChat Account" button in the add (Account) screen  (You select @mac.com or MobileMe and then press the Button - Choosing AIM and then pressing the button used to lead to the AIM registration page but AIM moved their page).
Apple IDs can be any valid email (or an @mac.com or iCloud registration)
Therefore you could make a Google ID into an Apple ID.
However this will not be a valid AIM Screen Name the way @mac.com or MobileMe/iCloud ones are.
