Convert an U8 array to a LabView data type

In my code the input is an fixed length of U8 array reflecting data in memory, I need to convert it to a predefined data type. For example, the first 2 U8 elements in the arrary need to comvert to an U16 data, next 4 U8 elements to U32 data. I am just wondering if there is any easy way to do that kind of conversion.
Solved!

In the first case use the Join Numbers function to join the bytes. In the second case, use the Join Numbers function three times: twice to join the consecutive bytes and once more to join the words into a single long word.

• Labview How to specify 1d array of clusters as data types for variant to data

Hi, I'm new to labview. Can anyone tell me how to specify 1d array of clusters as data types for variant to data?

First of all, you should be sure that there is such a data type within the variant; otherwise, you will run into errors.
I recommend you to create the cluster and create a type definition from it. Then drop an array shell from the array palette and drop the cluster type into that array.
Connect that constant to the data type input of the Variant To Data function.

• SSIS Package : While Extracting Sharepoint Lookup column, getting error 'Cannnot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types'

Hello,
I am working on one project and there is need to extract Sharepoint list data and import them to SQL Server table. I have few lookup columns in the list.
Steps in my Data Flow :
Sharepoint List Source
Derived Column
its formula : SUBSTRING([BusinessUnit],FINDSTRING([BusinessUnit],"#",1)+1,LEN([BusinessUnit])-FINDSTRING([BusinessUnit],"#",1))
Data Conversion
OLE DB Destination
But I am getting the error of not converting between unicode and non-unicode string data types.
I am not sure what I am missing here.
In Data Conversion, what should be the Data Type for the Look up column?
Please suggest here.
Thank you,
Mittal.

You have a data conversion transformation. Now, in the destination are you assigning the results of the derived column transformation or the data conversion transformation. To avoid this error you need use the data conversion output.
You can eliminate the need for the data conversion with the following in the derived column (creating a new column):
(DT_STR,100,1252)(SUBSTRING([BusinessUnit],FINDSTRING([BusinessUnit],"#",1)+1,LEN([BusinessUnit])-FINDSTRING([BusinessUnit],"#",1)))
The 100 is the length and 1252 is the code page (I almost always use 1252) for interpreting the string.

• Column "A" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types

I am following the SSIS overview video-

I am getting the folliwung error -
"column "A" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types"
in the origin file the data type is coming as string[DT_STR] and in the destination object it is coming as "Unicode string [DT_WSTR]"
I used a data conversion object in between, dosent works very well
Please help what to do

I see this often.
Right Click on FlatFileSource --> Show Advanced Editor --> 'Input and Output Properties' tab --> Expand 'Flat File Source Output' --> Expand 'Output Columns' --> Select your field and set the datatype to DT_WSTR.
Let me know if you still have issues.

• Cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types.

I'm trying to copy the data from 21 tables in a SQL 2005 database to a MS Access database using SSIS. Before converting the SQL database from 2000 to 2005 we had this process set up as a DTS package that ran every month for years with no problem. The only way I can get it to work now is to delete all of the tables from the Access DB and have SSIS create new tables each time. But when I try to create an SSIS package using the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to copy the SQL 2005 data to the same tables that SSIS itself created in Access I get the "cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types" error message. The first few columns I hit this problem on were created by SSIS as the Memo datatype in Access and when I changed them to Text in Access they started to work. The column I'm stuck on now is defined as Text in the SQL 2005 DB and in Access, but it still gives me the "cannot convert" error.

I was getting same error while tranfering data from SQL 2005 to Excel , but using following method i was able to tranfer data. Hopefully it may also help you.
1) Using Data Conversion transformation
data types you need to select is DT_WSTR (unicode in terms of SQL: 2005)
2) derived coloumn transformation
expression you need to use is :
(DT_WSTR, 20) (note : 20 can be replace by your character size)
Note:
Above teo method create replica of your esting coloumn (default name will be copy of <coloumn name>).
while mapping data do not map actual coloumn to the destination but select the coloumn that were created by any of above data transformer (replicated coloumn).

• The suitable LabVIEW data type correspinding to the array of structure in Visual Basic ActiveX DLL

Hi!
I need to call a VB ActiveX DLL from LabVIEW. When I run my LabVIEW code, I always meet an error as:
Error 1 occurred at Incorrect Function in T06.vi
Possible reasons:
LabVIEW: An input parameter is invalid.
I have read the VB DLL code that defines the data type. It fills data to a structure, then puts this structure to the array, and sends the array of structures to the method.
VB Code:
For I = 1 To 31
Set MyInputData(I) = New EM_nkd_DataPoint
Next I
With MyInputData(1)
.Amplitude = 8.44
.DataPointType = R_HW
.DataSource = MEASURED
.Wav
elength = 409.56
End With
With MyInputData(2)
.Amplitude = 91.60113
.DataPointType = T_SUB
.DataSource = MEASURED
.Wavelength = 409.56
End With
~~~
With MyInputData(31)
.Amplitude = 91.96825
.DataPointType = T_SUB
.DataSource = MEASURED
.Wavelength = 657.43
End With
My problem is that I can’t find a suitable kind of data type in LabVIEW which is corresponding to this case
Attached my LabVIEW code for reference.
Hi,
if you have a complete source code including EM_nkd_DataPoint class module, take a look inside in order to see data types for Amplitude, DataPointType, DataSource and Wavelength (probably for Amplitude and Wavelength is SINGLE). If this code is not available, maybe the author mentioned a type for T_SUB and MEASURED even if they are constants.
I am converting SSIS jobs from SQL Server 2005 running on a Windows 2003 server to 2008R2 running on a Windows 2008 server. I have a dataflow with an OLE DB Source which is selecting from an Oracle view. This of course worked fine in
FROM SOME_SCHEMA.SOME_VIEW
WHERE OIL_NET IS NOT NULL AND UWI IS NOT NULL
ORDER BY UWI
When I do "Show Advanced Editor" on this component, in the Input and Output Properties, I show the OLE DB External Column as DT_STR length 40 for the UWI column and for the Output Columns I see the UWI as the same DT_STR.
How can I get past this? I have tried doing a cast...cast(SOME_VIEW.UWI AS VARCHAR(40)) AS UWI and this gives the same error. The column in Oracle is a varchar2(40).
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Please check the data type for UWI using advanced editor for Oledb Source under
If not, try changing the data type (underoutput columns) same as data type shown under
external columns
• Labview data type to microcontroller
Hi,
I want to send data from labview to a PIC 16F876A, my question is can I only write values from 0 to 255 or I can send bigger values (like 5000) that the PIC could read the same value.
Thanks.
Hi Syd, if you want to write ascii characters, just send the character as a string to the microcontroller. In your VI you have chosen the default configurations for the serial port, are they really your chosen configurations? Here is the same VI with the options selectable. You should check out the serial examples shipped out with labview to work with the Read, Write and Configure serial Port VISAs. The help is also useful. If you get stuck just let us know.
• Is it possible to convert LabView data into OLE variant?
Hi. I'm using Activex Data Objects (ADO) to communicate with MySQL. Some ActiveX methods give OLE variant output, with "Variant Type" like "VT_ARRAY|VT_UI1", "VT_UI1" or "VT_BSTR". With some deduction and trial and error is relatively simple to extract data from this OLE variants and convert them to LabView data types. The problem is when I try to input variant data to some ActiveX methods, it almost always give me errors, I suppose because it expects the same type of the outputs, this is: OLE variants. Now, the question is: ¿Is there any way to convert LabView data into OLE variant data? ¿How?
I've been searching and found a lot of posts about problems when passing variant data into ActiveX, saying that sometimes SAFEARRAYs are needed, sometimes saying that there were some bugs in LV6, giving some workarounds to this bug and saying that it is fixed in LV7.1, but the supposed workarounds don't work and the bug is still present in LV7.1, if it is really a bug.
I think that if I could put LV data into OLE variant shape I may find an answer and solution to this matter.
Thank you
Daniel R.
UdeC - Chile
Below I describe how to handle OLE Variants, but I wanted to mention that LabVIEW does have a Database Connectivity toolkit (http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/6429) that has already created a set of VIs for ADO. You might check that out first.
However, handling OLE Variants in LabVIEW is automatic. LabVIEW itself has a variant datatype. When you use the ActiveX property or invoke nodes and one of the parameters is an OLE Variant, it is automatically converted to a LV Variant. You can then use the LV Variant VIs (such as "Variant to Data" and "To Variant").
• Improving the LabVIEW Help: Working with Data Types
Have you ever had trouble figuring out how to work with the waveform data type, the dynamic data type, or some of the other more complex data types in LabVIEW? As a tech writer on the LabVIEW team, I'd like to improve our documentation about working with data. What would you like to see? What would be helpful? Have you ever given up on a particular data type because it didn't work? Have you ever created a replacement data type because you preferred not to use a LabVIEW data type?
Lacy Klosterman Rohre | Marketing Editor | National Instruments | 512.683.6376 | ni.com/newsletter
I've been programming LabVIEW since around 3.1 / 4.0. Over the years and versions, I've found it necessary to approach a lot of the new datatypes and algorithms with some healthy skepticism because I don't think we're usually given a "fair and balanced" overview. Some of the things that are highly promoted that bring "ease of use" for beginners (and I *do* understand the importance of that when you're growing your LabVIEW user base) can carry significant performance penalties that are mentioned in more of a whisper, if at all. I'd just like a more full disclosure of the tradeoffs -- the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Waveforms -- very rarely use them, unless required for analysis functions. I have a vague notion (between a belief and a memory) that they used to carry a significant performance penalty compared to arrays, but that the gap is now much smaller. Still, I'm most comfortable with my old habit of using data arrays. Some of this came about because a lot of my work uses counters where I may have a variable "dt" value or where my AI is clocked by a counter and the "dt" isn't internally generated.
Dynamic signals -- have never used them. Have no clear idea what good they're supposed to be, and they seem to be tied in primarily with Express VI's, which I have also studiously avoided.
Variants -- Use them only slightly. Performance issues are a question mark. Exception: have learned that the implementation of Variant properties allows their use as an efficient way to create associates for string lookup tables.
Digital Waveform -- have typically avoided it except when graphing digital data during debug. Haven't found any compelling reasons to use it. I do like the notion of a compress/expand capability for sparse digital data, but haven't exercised it enough to trust the implementation.
Recap: I don't need more simple "how-to's" in the help. I need a LOT more "why bother's" that include both pros and cons.
• Generate LabVIEW data from JSON
Hello,
I have a question about using the "Unflatten from JSON" function in LabVIEW. I have a JSON string data coming from an external application (Java) and I need to convert that to LabVIEW data type (a cluster) and use that information in my program. But the "Unflatten from JSON" function needs a data type to conver the JSON string to LabVIEW data. If I don't know about the data type, is there a way to create a LabVIEW data cluster from the incoming JSON string? Anybody has any experience on this?
I appreciate all your inputs.
Thanks...
Try the JSON LabVIEW library.
It compiles fine, but I get an error when the program is running as soon as you input the first value. The program is not very complex, but I need to understand how to get this fixed and why is isn't already. Any help is appreciated as this is a genuine problem. This program follows a consistent style template given to me by my tutor. The source is given below, and I appreciate any positive response.
Try this piece of code...... I adapted it to your program, so it starts from 1. You should pass numOfStudents - 1 as numOfStudents to don't get the notorious error =D
if (menuChoice.equals("1"))
findHighest(module, numOfStudents - 1);
I added the println statement because in your prog isn't present an output routine (well, at last I didn't see it..... maybe because I'm sleepy =) )
public static void findHighest(StudentRecord module[], int numOfStudents)
String outputMark;
String outputSID;
StudentRecord retValue = new StudentRecord();
retValue.sID = module[1].sID;
retValue.mark = module[1].mark;
for (int i = 2; i <= numOfStudents; i++) {
if (module.mark > retValue.mark) {
retValue.sID = module[i].sID;
retValue.mark = module[i].mark;
outputSID = String.valueOf(retValue.sID);
outputMark = String.valueOf(retValue.mark);
System.out.println(outputSID + " " + outputMark);
Hope it can help you
