Convert Document to String ? (Java 1.3 compatible)

Hi folks,
hope you can help me out. I'm trying to convert a Document to String and my code must be compatible with Java 1.3.
Using Java 1.5 this code is working:
public static String string_output(Document doc){
          String content = "";
          try{
               //Console output
               TransformerFactory tranFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
               Transformer aTransformer = tranFactory.newTransformer();
               Source src = new DOMSource(doc);
               StringWriter stringWriterOutput=new StringWriter();
               Result dest = new StreamResult(stringWriterOutput);
               aTransformer.transform(src,dest);
               content = stringWriterOutput.toString();
          catch (Exception e){
               System.out.println(e.getMessage());
          return contenat;
     }     But I can't use this code in Java 1.3. What can I do (except using a higher Java version)

I think the default transform is the only standard way of converting a Document to a String.
Xerces has a class that does the job: org.apache.xml.serialize.DOMSerializer

    Can anybody suggest me how to do that.

    I don't know of any way to tell the parser to convert is for you, you'll have to replace the characters yourself after you got the string from the parser.

  • Converting XML Document to String

    Dear All,
    I am quite new to Java Web Services. I have made a Java Class which calls all the web services . I am displaying the results on a Command prompt. Below is my sample code:
    import javax.xml.rpc.Service;
    import javax.xml.rpc.Stub;
    import horusWS.Horus_x0020_Web_x0020_Services_Impl;
    import horusWS.Horus_x0020_Web_x0020_ServicesSoap;
    public class JavaClient {
    public static void main(String[] args)
    Horus_x0020_Web_x0020_Services_Impl service = new Horus_x0020_Web_x0020_Services_Impl();
    Horus_x0020_Web_x0020_ServicesSoap port = service.getHorus_x0020_Web_x0020_ServicesSoap();
    String str;
    str = port.getTextFeedbackLearner(1,"P001",1);
    //where getTextFeedbackLearner is the my Web Service.
    System.out.println(str);
    System.out.println returns the web service in string format. Now I want to compare this string to my actual getTextFeedbackLearner.xml file. But I think I need to convert getTextFeedbackLearner.xml to string first. Please let me know
    how can I convert an XML Document to String.
    Thanking you in Anticipation.
    cheers,
    Sunil Sabir

    You can read the XML document as you read any other file.
    Read it into a String variable.
    Check java.io.FileReader, java.io.BufferReader, etc.

    Hi,
    did you show the id-value in the user interface as a input-component, and did the input-component include a converter?
    If yes, show the id as output-text and remove any existing converter-components.

    Yet another way of doing it is: ownerName.toString().
    If you are working in and IDE such as Netbeans or Eclipse, type a period after the object name. Wait a second or so. Eclipse/Netbeans Intellisense will show you a list of functions that object provides that you can choose from. toString() is one of them.

    Like DrClap said: DecimalFormat. However, make sure you understand the Locale things, as explained at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/java/text/DecimalFormat.html (which refers to NumberFormat as well) and use them explicitly. Like
    public class FormatTest
      public static void main(String args[])
        try
          // see NumberFormat.getInstance()
          DecimalFormat fmt = new DecimalFormat();
          Number num = fmt.parse("1,000.01");
          System.out.println(num.doubleValue());
        catch(ParseException pe)
          System.out.println(pe);
    }most likely seems OK on your system, but may print "1.0" (or even fail) on some non-English platforms!
    When performing calculations, also see http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/JDCTechTips/2001/tt0807.html

  • Converting double to strings

    I'm having a problem in getting my double to convert to a string, here's my code so far.
         public void calculatePayments()
              double paymentAmount;
              double monthlyInterestRate = (Double.parseDouble(interestBox.getText())/12)/100;
              double amountOfLoan = Double.parseDouble(balanceBox.getText());
              double numberOfPayments = Double.parseDouble(yearsBox.getText()) * 12;
              paymentAmount = (amountOfLoan * monthlyInterestRate) / (1 - Math.pow(1/(1 + monthlyInterestRate),numberOfPayments));
              Double.toString(paymentAmount);
              tableBox.append(paymentAmount);
    And here's the error message I get:
    ProgramInterface.java:134: append(java.lang.String) in javax.swing.JTextArea cannot be applied to (double)
              tableBox.append(paymentAmount);
    As always, help is appreciated.

    This line returns a String but has no affect on paymentAmount.
    Double.toString(paymentAmount);To covert the double to String you can save the return in a variable
    String s = Double.toString(paymentAmount);
    tableBox.append(s);or combine them
    tableBox.append(Double.toString(paymentAmount));

    Hi,
    I need to convert oracle timestamp that i got from oracle database to java timestamp.I tried to use getTimestamp() to get timestamp value from oracle, but am getting NumberFormatException.
    Could any of suggest how to convert oracle timestamp to java timestamp.

    Thanks jverd ,
    then my code will be like:
    String oracleTS="11-MAR-05 11.19.20.625 AM";
    // am looking for yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss format
    SimpleDateFormat sdf=new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd
    HH:mm:ss");
    Timestamp javaTimestamp=Timestamp.valueOf(oracleTS);
    System.out.println("javaTimestamp----->>
    "+javaTimestamp);
    ving java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input
    string: "MAR"Well, the SimpleDateFormat has to actually match the format you're trying to parse, for one thing. Then you have to actually USE the SDF, which you didn't.
    You really haven't made it clear what you're trying to do, and it doesn't appear that you bothered to study the links I provided.
    DateFormat df = new SimpleDateFormat("dd-MMM-yy HH.mm.ss.SSS aa");
    Date date = df.parse(oracleTS);
    Timestamp ts = new Timestamp(date.getTime());

    My question is:
    How can I convert between xsd:string and soapenc:string types when using the "assign" activity so I don't keep getting this warning message?

    Hi Paulo,
    This warning has been fixed in recent builds. eventhough soapenc:string is different type, it extends xs:string and its simple content. the compiler shouldn't display warnings for this case.

  • Transform Document to String

    What is an easy way to transform the contents of a org.w3c.dom.Document to String and vice versa?

    You can use xerces parser for getting the XML string from Document object. There are Classes to provide this functionality. I have pasted the code here. Let me know if you have any problems

  • How to convert csv files into java bean objects?

    Hi,
    I have a CSV file, I want to store the data availabale in that csv file into java bean, I am new to this csv files how can I convert CSV files into java beans.
    Please help me.
    Adavanced Thanks,
    Mahendra

    You can use the java.io API to read (and write) files. Use BufferedReader to read the CSV file line by line. Use String#split() to split each line into an array of parts which were separated by comma (or semicolon). If necessary run some escaping of quotes. Finally collect all parts in a two-dimensional List of Strings or a List of Javabeans.

  • Help! How to convert an instance from java.lang.Object to a particula class

    * How to convert an instance from java.lang.Object class to a particular class
    witch is known only at the running time?
    Roster EJB component is make up of RosterHome, Roster and RosterBean.
    RosterHome is the home interface of Roster EJB.
    Roster is the remote interface of Roster EJB.
    RosterBean is the implement of Roster EJB.
    The following code segment is to invoke Roster EJB component.
    String jndiName="roster.RosterHome";
    javax.naming.Context initial = getInitialContext();//getInitialContext() returns a instance of Context.
    Object objref = initial.lookup(jndiName);
    RosterHome home =
    (RosterHome)javax.rmi.PortableRemoteObject.narrow(objref,
    RosterHome.class);
    Roster myRoster = home.create();
    String team="T1"
    String player="Tom"
    myRoster.addPlayer(player,team);
    But, now, all the home interface, the remote interface and the JNDI Name of
    Roster EJB component are not been known at the compiling time. However They are
    known at the running time, throught reading from the XML config file.
    Questions:
    1,How to write code for this case ? or
    2,How to convert an instance from Object class to a particular class witch is known
    only at the running time?
    String jndiName="roster.RosterHome";// in fact, reads from XML file.
    String homeClassName="roster.RosterHome";// in fact, reads from XML file.
    String remoteClassName="roster.Roster";// in fact, reads from XML file.
    javax.naming.Context initial = getInitialContext();//getInitialContext() returns a instance of Context.
    Object objref = initial.lookup(jndiName);
    Object objHome= javax.rmi.PortableRemoteObject.narrow(objref,
    Class.forName(homeClassName));
    /* how to do next?
    }

    I am not sure what you are trying to do. But at some point you should know which methods to call on the remote interfaces. Maybe the method names are stored in the XML file as well or you have a set of standard method names (also consider parameters).
    However, this can be solved by reflection. Look at the java.lang.reflect package, especially java.lang.reflect.Method, and also at java.lang.Class.
    If you are doing this on the app server:
    I've seen posts where people say that reflection is not permitted in EJB, but I don't think so. Check the EJB spec.
    If you are doing this in an application: reflection is always permitted. Probably also in applets and JSP.
