Convert from Delicated to shared server

Hi using oracle 9.2 any advise on how i can change the server mode from delicated to shared?
Thanks for any info

There is no such things as 'shared server mode' or 'dedicated server mode'.
You can confiugure your server to accept shared, as well as dedicated, connections. To do that you set up the appropriate initialization parameters to tell the system how many connections you want to allow, how many are to be handed to dispatchers, how many shared server processes you want to support, etc.
It's best to review the concepts manual for the general architecture. Links to the appropraite area ffor 9i and 10g are

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/process.htm#sthref1644
After you have an idea how this works, head over to the Administator's Guide at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96521/manproc.htm#13880 to learn about the parameters and how to set them.

  • Any way of importing from Access to SQL Server?

    I have a huge store of information in Access. But now I'm required to use SQL Server.
    Is there any way of importing the information from Access to SQL Server by Java programming?
    Or is there a manual way of doing that?
    Thank you in advance.

    I need to use Java because this is for a client. I
    can't expect the client to follow those steps. As a
    result, I want to create something simple for the
    client to convert from Access to SQL Server.
    Any other way of doing that?
    That argument does not make sense.
    There is no way that a 'client' is going to be able to manage MS SQL Server without understanding how it works. MS SQL Server is a complex database and requires at least some dedicated support, even if it is only part time.
    For example consider the following:
    -MS Access does not have a log file. MS SQL Server does. How is the log file going to be sized?
    -If the log file fills up (like for a run away query) MS SQL Server comes to a screeching halt. How is that problem going to be fixed?
    Now maybe you are going to provide that support, which means you can run those scripts. Or the client is going to support it in which case they need to have someone who understands it - and they will need to know how to run those scripts (since it is rather basic knowledge.)

    ShanIt's not an either/or situation, as the database does not "run in shared server mode" vs. "run in dedicated server mode". A database will *always* accept dedicated connections if requested by the client. It *may* accept shared server connections -- *if* requested by the client *and if* it is configured to accept them.

    i need help as to how to convert a dedicated running oracle server to a shared server.(step by step plz i am fairly a fresh person)
    there are presently 10 users but have to configure for 125 users accessing from 5 locations.
    also need how to implement connection manager

    125 users are not so much, unless your database server is a quite small one. Anyway, you have to configure Dispatchers and Shared Servers. See Configuring Oracle Database for Shared Server

    Hi
    I am having 3 oracle client machines(each with sql*plus or Toad tool),all these 3 client are to be connected through Jboss-4.0.5(application server) to Oracle 10g database server.
    [ all 3 clients + 1 application server + 1 database server are with different ip address]

    Is it possible to convert a running Oracle-10.1.0.2.0 database server in[b] Windows server-2003 os from dedicated server-mode to shared server-mode ?
    Question-2
    What all are the init parameters I have to change ?
    So far I have changed (a) alter system set shared_servers=5;
    (b) alter system set dispatchers=(pro=tcp)(dis=3);
    (c) alter system set max_dispatchers=10;
    (d) alter system set shared_server_sessions=5;
    (e) alter system set circuits=300;
    Question-3
    How to configure Listener in the Client system ?
    Question-4
    What all are the changes to be made in Jboss server ?
    Regards
    Sbmk_design

    ad 1) Yes this is possible
    Ad 2) From the top of my head, these seem like the settings to change
    Ad 3) You do not have to change the listener (ow.. and clients have no listener) just make sure that you do not have '"server=dedicated" in your local tnsnames.ora file
    Ad 4) in jboss, just check your datasource. If it is using a thin connection you are ok, if you are using a oci connection check the tnsnames.ora file.

  • Error while converting schema from oracle to SQL server

    Hello,
    I am getting following error while converting schema from oracle to SQL server using SSMA.
    I get Errors 1-3 while migrating procedures and error 4 while migrating a table.
    1- O2SS0050: Conversion of identifier 'SYSDATE' is not supported.
    2- O2SS0050: Conversion of identifier 'to_date(VARCHAR2, CHAR)' is not supported.
    3- O2SS0050: Conversion of identifier 'regexp_replace(VARCHAR2, CHAR)' is not supported.
    4- O2SS0486: <Primary key name> constraint is disabled in Oracle and cannot be converted because SQL Server does not support disabling of primary or unique constraint.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks.

    The exact statement in oracle side which causing this error (O2SS0050:
    Conversion of identifier 'to_date(VARCHAR2, CHAR)' is not supported.) is below:
    dStartDate:= to_date(sStartDate,'MON-YYYY');
    Statement causing error O2SS0050:
    Conversion of identifier 'regexp_replace(VARCHAR2, CHAR)' is not supported is below.
    nCount2:= length(regexp_replace(sDataRow,'[^,]'));
    So there is no statement which is using to_date(VARCHAR2,
    CHAR) and regexp_replace(VARCHAR2, CHAR) in as such. 'MON-YYYY'  and '[^,]'
    are CHAR values hence SSMA is unable to convert it from varchar2 to char.
    Regarding SYSDATE issue, you mean to put below code in target(SQL) side in SSMA ?
    dDate date := sysdate;
    Thanks.

    Yes. No.
    Yes, you can stop shared server. Simply decrease the shared server pool to zero. (see below for details)
    No, you cannot stop a dedicated server as "The Thing" that creates dedicated server connections is the Listener. So you will need to stop that.
    # stop shared server:
    SQL> show parameter shared_servers

  • Shared Server converted to Dedicated (WAIT(RECEIVE))

    Hi,
    I have an Oracle 9.2.0.7 and using MTS. Someone know why when I start my JBoss application 20 shared servers are in statu WAIT(RECEIVE)? I saw in metalink that this status means that my shared servers were converted to dedicated! How can I turn those connection to shared again?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paulo Almeida
    São Paulo/SP- Brazil

    Hi Paulo,
    Do you have a RAM shortage on your server?
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_mts_multithreaded_servers_shared.htm
    My experience concurs that Oracle shared servers should not be used without a compelling reasons (i.e. super high connect/disconnect rates on an instance with limited resources) and that the vast majority of Oracle databases will run more efficiently without shared servers. Dedicated server connects are far faster than multi-threaded server connections, and 64-bit Oracle combined with the low cost of RAM has driven-down the rare cases where shared servers are justified.
    Oracle's Tom Kyte notes:
    http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/ask/f?p=4950:8:::::F4950_P8_DISPLAYID:5269794407347
    - "Unless you have a real reason to use MTS -- don't."
    - "a shared server connection is by design "slower" than a dedicated server (more stuff goes on, more complex) it is most likely only getting in the way."
    Hope this helps. . .

  • How to convert from SQL Server table to Flat file (txt file)

    I need To ask question how convert from SQL Server table to Flat file txt file

    Hi
    1. Import/Export wizened
    2. Bcp utility
    3. SSIS
    1.Import/Export Wizard
    First and very manual technique is the import wizard.  This is great for ad-hoc and just to slam it in tasks.
    In SSMS right click the database you want to import into.  Scroll to Tasks and select Import Data…
    For the data source we want out zips.txt file.  Browse for it and select it.  You should notice the wizard tries to fill in the blanks for you.  One key thing here with this file I picked is there are “ “ qualifiers.  So we need to make
    sure we add “ into the text qualifier field.   The wizard will not do this for you.
    Go through the remaining pages to view everything.  No further changes should be needed though
    Hit next after checking the pages out and select your destination.  This in our case will be DBA.dbo.zips.
    Following the destination step, go into the edit mappings section to ensure we look good on the types and counts.
    Hit next and then finish.  Once completed you will see the count of rows transferred and the success or failure rate
    Import wizard completed and you have the data!
    bcp utility
    Method two is bcp with a format file http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms162802.aspx
    This is probably going to win for speed on most occasions but is limited to the formatting of the file being imported.  For this file it actually works well with a small format file to show the contents and mappings to SQL Server.
    To create a format file all we really need is the type and the count of columns for the most basic files.  In our case the qualifier makes it a bit difficult but there is a trick to ignoring them.  The trick is to basically throw a field into the
    format file that will reference it but basically ignore it in the import process.
    Given that our format file in this case would appear like this
    9.0
    9
    1 SQLCHAR 0 0 """ 0 dummy1 ""
    2 SQLCHAR 0 50 "","" 1 Field1 ""
    3 SQLCHAR 0 50 "","" 2 Field2 ""
    4 SQLCHAR 0 50 "","" 3 Field3 ""
    5 SQLCHAR 0 50 ""," 4 Field4 ""
    6 SQLCHAR 0 50 "," 5 Field5 ""
    7 SQLCHAR 0 50 "," 6 Field6 ""
    8 SQLCHAR 0 50 "," 7 Field7 ""
    9 SQLCHAR 0 50 "n" 8 Field8 ""
    The bcp call would be as follows
    C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinn>bcp DBA..zips in “C:zips.txt” -f “c:zip_format_file.txt” -S LKFW0133 -T
    Given a successful run you should see this in command prompt after executing the statement

    bcp import completed!
    BULK INSERT
    Next, we have BULK INSERT given the same format file from bcp
    CREATE TABLE zips (
    Col1 nvarchar(50),
    Col2 nvarchar(50),
    Col3 nvarchar(50),
    Col4 nvarchar(50),
    Col5 nvarchar(50),
    Col6 nvarchar(50),
    Col7 nvarchar(50),
    Col8 nvarchar(50)
    GO
    INSERT INTO zips
    SELECT *
    FROM OPENROWSET(BULK 'C:Documents and SettingstkruegerMy Documentsblogcenzuszipcodeszips.txt',
    FORMATFILE='C:Documents and SettingstkruegerMy Documentsblogzip_format_file.txt'
    ) as t1 ;
    GO
    That was simple enough given the work on the format file that we already did.  Bulk insert isn’t as fast as bcp but gives you some freedom from within TSQL and SSMS to add functionality to the import.
    SSIS
    Next is my favorite playground in SSIS
    We can do many methods in SSIS to get data from point A, to point B.  I’ll show you data flow task and the SSIS version of BULK INSERT
    First create a new integrated services project.
    Create a new flat file connection by right clicking the connection managers area.  This will be used in both methods
    Bulk insert
    You can use format file here as well which is beneficial to moving methods around.  This essentially is calling the same processes with format file usage.  Drag over a bulk insert task and double click it to go into the editor.
    Fill in the information starting with connection.  This will populate much as the wizard did.
    Example of format file usage
    Or specify your own details
    Execute this and again, we have some data
    Data Flow method
    Bring over a data flow task and double click it to go into the data flow tab.
    Bring over a flat file source and SQL Server destination.  Edit the flat file source to use the connection manager “The file” we already created.  Connect the two once they are there
    Double click the SQL Server Destination task to open the editor.  Enter in the connection manager information and select the table to import into.
    Go into the mappings and connect the dots per say
    Typical issue of type conversions is Unicode to non-unicode.
    We fix this with a Data conversion or explicit conversion in the editor.  Data conversion tasks are usually the route I take.  Drag over a data conversation task and place it between the connection from the flat file source to the SQL Server destination.
    New look in the mappings
    And after execution…
    SqlBulkCopy Method
    Sense we’re in the SSIS package we can use that awesome “script task” to show SlqBulkCopy.  Not only fast but also handy for those really “unique” file formats we receive so often
    Bring over a script task into the control flow
    Double click the task and go to the script page.  Click the Design script to open up the code behind

  • Migrating from  Dedicated Server to Shared server

    Hi,
    Please let me know how to configure from Dedicated server to Shared server in oracle 10g.
    Any advises would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    - sridhar

    It is not that hard, you only need to configure four parameters and check the listener to verify this has already been configured and registered. On the other hand, you should configure your tnsnames.ora file so you have the alternative to connect by means of a shared or a dedicated oracle server, otherwise the default, once the dispatchers and the shared server processes are configured will be shared server.
    The four parameters to configure at the initialization parameter file are:
    dispatchers
    max_dispatchers
    shared_servers
    max_shared_servers
    and you should create an entry at the tnsnames.ora file that declares a (server=dedicated) that will be used to connect by means of a dedicated server.
    Further details on Howto configure the shared server can be found here --> Configuring Oracle Database for Shared Server.
    One side note I'd like to add, shared server is suitable for scaleability in OLTP environments, if your kind of job is either batch or DDS you should open a connection by means of a dedicated server, otherwise you'll create a severe bottleneck.

  • Slow applications start from win 2012 file server using win 7 workstations

    I hope someone can help me with why applications are slow to load i have replaced a 8 year old server running  win 2003 and replaced it with dell t620 running win 2012 r2 it is like 20 times faster but it is slower than the old server. the office has
    7 win 7 x64 machines all our applications are running from win 2012 file server. The server is set up as following the server runs with two hyper-v machines one machine runs ad, file server, dhcp, dns and printer server and the other is domino server and remote
    desktop.
    the machine is more than capable but it is not so i started reading after i run out of ideas. i looked every where but the issue is with the server after trying everything else i did a simple test If i go to the application folder and click on it apps load
    instantly if i then type a unc path it takes from instant load to 3 and a bit seconds the same as the workstations. The same speed if I use ip address.
    network cards are intel
    i would really appreciate if somebody has suggestions that i could try
    thank you

    Hi,
    Do you mean that applications in the application folder start slowly when you access the application folder on the Windows 2012 R2 file server from Windows 7 workstations using UNC path or IP address. Do all the files in the application folder have the same
