Converting a String to a char

Hello,
How to a convert a String object consisting of a single character to a char type. I.e., suppose I have
String myStr = "a"
I want to be able to convert myStr to a char for use in a switch case statement. Thanks.
CoreDummy

i know I can just convert the String "a" to a char array...but there should be a better way to do this...
Forever an idiot,

  • Conver String object into char

    Hi friends,
    I don't know how convert the String object into char(Primitive data type), using wrapper class?
    Kindly let me know.

    Have a look in the String API documentation for a method that returns an array of char.
    (It's not really what most people would describe as a wrapper class: that's more like converting a single char into an instance of Character.)

  • Reading a string and remove chars

    Hi,
    I am new the java and I am having a problem with converting a string to an int. I have a data comming in to gbyte_in which is "1;1;1". I am then converting it to a string a spliting it up into three vars to hold each value. I am then converting the string to a int so I can use it. The problem comes when I try to convert the last value as I get a
    numberformatexception, I think there must be some chars such as Enter or line feed at the end causing the problem. I have tried using the gstr_string.replace('\n',' ') but still having the problem.
    I have put a basic example of what I am doing below, If someone could help a beginner with understanding what I am doing wrong I would be very greatful
    Thanks
    Joolz
    ** Start code**
    byte[] gbyte_in;
    private void CheckData_In()
    int i;
    /* make STRING of BYTE */
    String lstr_temp = new String(gbyte_in);
    /* take STRING a make an INT*/
    i = Integer.parseInt(lstr_temp);
    ** End code **

    Hi,
    I have,
    this is what comes in 1;2;3
    I can convert 1 and 2 to an int but 3 throws the error, I am just doing a substring looking for the ";". So I think there must be some special chars at the end, but I cannot find a way of removing them before I convert it to an int.
    Thanks

    In your post you ask how to convert a string value to a date.  The value returned from the Get-AdUser is already a date.  It does not need to be converted.
    Bill has sshown one way to convert a date to a string and there are other methods.  You need to clarify your question.
    If you are really trying ot convert strings to dates then you can start with this:
    [datetime]'01/21/1965 13:33:23'
    Most date strings aer autodetected by the class.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • How to convert a String to an Icon

    Hello,
    I'm trying to figure out how to convert a String (specifically one letter) to an Icon for a JTree. The program I am working on uses .png files for the icons at the moment, with each .png being a single uppercase letter. However, recent discussion has us wanting to change to something more dynamic, since we anticipate needing new letters in the near future.
    My task is to modify the current codebase so that the Icons used to identify nodes in the tree are created from a Font within code, rather than reading in .png files. I have done some experimenting with creating a Label with just that String, setting the font and trying to extract the image using calls like createImage(int width, int height) and so on, but so far to no avail.
    If I could figure out how to at least convert the String to an image, I could probably make it work (since I can play around with creating an ImageIcon with that image). Thanks in advance for any help.
    Allan

    Here is some quick and dirty code:
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class BasicIcon implements Icon {
        private String text;
        public BasicIcon(String text) {
            this.text = text;
        public int getIconWidth() {
            return 16;
        public int getIconHeight() {
            return 16;
        public void paintIcon(Component c, Graphics g,  int x, int y) {
            Color old = g.getColor();
            g.setColor(c.getForeground());
            g.drawString(text, x, y+13);
            g.setColor(old);
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            JPanel cp = new JPanel();
            for (char ch = 'A'; ch < 'F'; ++ch) {
                cp.add(new JButton("letter " + ch, new BasicIcon(String.valueOf(ch))));
            JFrame f = new JFrame("BasicIcon");
            f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            f.setContentPane(cp);
            f.pack();
            f.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
            f.setVisible(true);
    }One thing that could be improved is the vertical positioning of the letter in the Icon.
    The x,y values passed into paintIcon are the upper-left hand corner of the icon,
    but the y value needed by drawString is the position of the String's baseline.
    To do it right, use one of Font's getLineMetrics methods and play around with ascent.

  • How do you convert this String into a double?

    Hi, in this code I want to convert String arg into a double. I'm trying to do this so that I can convert some string into a double in this calculator that I'm making. Here is the code:
    public class par {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    String str = "351";
    double arg = new double(str); // should convert the string into a double
         System.out.println(arg);
         System.out.println(str);
    I keep getting errors in line 4, if any of you could help me out here I'll be thankful, i'm kinda new to java and my search for java's equivalent of alof() (its a function in C libraries that converts char[] into a double)lead me to this.

    Use the Following:
    String num = "123.2";
    double d = Double.parseDouble(num);

  • Converting punctuated strings to Unpunctuated strings

    I need to fiqure out how to convert punctuated strings to non-punctuated strings.
    E.G
    "This is my dog, her name is pinky."
    "This is my dog her name is pinky"
    The string is allowed to contain characters btw. a-z and A-Z. It is also allowed to have spaces, apostrophe and hyphens. Thank you.

    I think you have to copy the string to a string buffer (to make it mutable) then using loops, loop through the string char by char making sure if falls within the bounds set. If it is not then discard it.
    Hope this helps, there may be a better way, but i dont know it

  • How to improve the speed of creating multiple strings from a char[]?

    Hi,
    I have a char[] and I want to create multiple Strings from the contents of this char[] at various offsets and of various lengths, without having to reallocate memory (my char[] is several tens of megabytes large). And the following function (from java/lang/String.java) would be perfect apart from the fact that it was designed so that only package-private classes may benefit from the speed improvements it offers:
        // Package private constructor which shares value array for speed.
        String(int offset, int count, char value[]) {
         this.value = value;
         this.offset = offset;
         this.count = count;
        }My first thought was to override the String class. But java.lang.String is final, so no good there. Plus it was a really bad idea to start with.
    My second thought was to make a java.lang.FastString which would then be package private, and could access the string's constructor, create a new string and then return it (thought I was real clever here) but no, apparently you cannot create a class within the package java.lang. Some sort of security issue.
    I am just wondering first if there is an easy way of forcing the compiler to obey me, or forcing it to allow me to access a package private constructer from outside the package. Either that, or some sort of security overrider, somehow.

    My laptop can create and garbage collect 10,000,000 Strings per second from char[] "hello world". That creates about 200 MB of strings per second (char = 2B). Test program below.
    A char[] "tens of megabytes large" shouldn't take too large a fraction of a second to convert to a bunch of Strings. Except, say, if the computer is memory-starved and swapping to disk. What kind of times do you get? Is it at all possible that there is something else slowing things down?
    using (literally) millions of charAt()'s would be
    suicide (code-wise) for me and my program."java -server" gives me 600,000,000 charAt()'s per second (actually more, but I put in some addition to prevent Hotspot from optimizing everything away). Test program below. A million calls would be 1.7 milliseconds. Using char[n] instead of charAt(n) is faster by a factor of less than 2. Are you sure millions of charAt()'s is a huge problem?
    public class t1
        public static void main(String args[])
         char hello[] = "hello world".toCharArray();
         for (int n = 0; n < 10; n++) {
             long start = System.currentTimeMillis();
             for (int m = 0; m < 1000 * 1000; m++) {
              String s1 = new String(hello);
              String s2 = new String(hello);
              String s3 = new String(hello);
              String s4 = new String(hello);
              String s5 = new String(hello);
             long end = System.currentTimeMillis();
             System.out.println("time " + (end - start) + " ms");
    public class t2
        static int global;
        public static void main(String args[])
         String hello = "hello world";
         for (int n = 0; n < 10; n++) {
             long start = System.currentTimeMillis();
             for (int m = 0; m < 10 * 1000 * 1000; m++) {
              global +=
                  hello.charAt(0) + hello.charAt(1) + hello.charAt(2) +
                  hello.charAt(3) + hello.charAt(4) + hello.charAt(5) +
                  hello.charAt(6) + hello.charAt(7) + hello.charAt(8) +
                  hello.charAt(9);
              global +=
                  hello.charAt(0) + hello.charAt(1) + hello.charAt(2) +
                  hello.charAt(3) + hello.charAt(4) + hello.charAt(5) +
                  hello.charAt(6) + hello.charAt(7) + hello.charAt(8) +
                  hello.charAt(9);
             long end = System.currentTimeMillis();

  • Convert C string in to BSTR with CA_CStringToBSTR()

    I want to convert C string in to BSTR format with function CA_CStringToBSTR.
    I call an ActiveX function. In this function is CA_CStringToBSTR called.
    ------------ActiveX Function ---------------------
    HRESULT state;
    char buf[50]="0.0";
    BSTR bstr=0;
    state = CA_CStringToBSTR(buf, &bstr);
    return ......;(0x80070057 error code "Wrong parameter")
    Debuger after this Fun gives me the following result: state=0, bstr=0xXXXX(48)(No size Info)   [48=0x30='0']
    Then I get error from this ActiveX function. I think the problem is here with this CA-CStrng..... Function.
    Is that correct, what does this function?

    You should never send C structs over the wire, otherwise you are expecting the other end to know (a) the source machine's byte order (b) the source machine's C compiler's alignment and padding rules (c) the source machine's C compiler's options in effect for the compilation of the program some of which can affect (b).
    Instead you should write each field separately in network byte order using htons(), htonl(), &c, or use something like XDR. If you do the former make sure the output is buffered so you don't write thousands of tinygrams.

  • Convert HEX String into HEX Array

    Hi!
    Probably a silly question, but I am looking for a way to convert a ROM ID number such as "5E03C21000BA" into an short hexadecimal array.
    The way to do this in C would probably be
    char[17] str_romID = "5E03C21000BA";
    uchar[8] romID;
    sscanf(str_romID, "%02X%02X%02X%02X%02X%02X%02X%02X",
    &romID[0], &romID[1], &romID[2], &romID[3],
    &romID[4], &romID[5], &romID[6], &romID[7]);
    but I can't seem to find a way to do this in LabVIEW. I would be very grateful if you could help me out with a sample program. Thanks ever so much!
    Stefan

    Hello Blondchen,
    I have attached a picture to my last explanation. This example doesn't take care of strings with an uneven number of chars!
    My array has only 6 numbers as you only gave a string with 12 chars... That's what I asked before: how should we know where to split your string to the single numbers? Normally I would take 2 chars to form a byte (as I did in the example). If you give me 16 chars I give you 8 bytes...
    I also think your C byte array will be an U8 array in LabView. If you REALLY need I8 numbers you can change the default type of the "hex to string" or cast to I8 (advanced->data manipulation->type cast) after the conversion.

  • Converting a byte[] into a char[]

    Hi All,
    what's the best way to convert a byte[] into a char[]?
    Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    you will need a encoding schema...
    byte is binary data, char is interpret from byte by the system...
    easiest way without extra coding...
    new String(byte[], encoding).toCharArray()
    if you don't specify encoding... system default is used.

    Hi,
    I have a problem with an PropertyGrid enum property that uses a type converter.

  • How do I know if I can convert a String value to an int value or not?

    Hi,
    I want to know how to make the judgment that if I can convert a String value to an int value or not? Assume that I don't know the String is number or letters
    Thank you

    Encephalopathic wrote
    Again, why?One of the problems (have been dued) in my codelab asks us to write a class as follow
    Write a class definition of a class named 'Value' with the following:
    a constructor accepting a single integer paramter
    a constructor with no parameters
    a method 'setVal' that accepts a single parameter,
    a boolean method, 'wasModified' that returns true if setVal was ever called for the object.
    a method 'getVal' that returns an integer value as follows: if setVal has ever been called, it getVal returns the last value passed to setVal. Otherwise if the "single int parameter" constructor was used to create the object, getVal returns the value passed to that constructor. Otherwise getVal returns 0.
    The setVal(int y) returns nothing, so how do I know whether it has been called or not?
    Thank you
