Converting Debian 7 ESXi 4.1 to 2012R2 host :

Hi,
I'm trying to convert Debian 7 VM to hyper-v using MVMC 2.1. In GUI wizard on  Virtual Machine section, under Operating System there is shown Other Linux (x64) instead of Debian 7. Debian version 5 is show correct (for olders dis. VM), as Debian GNU/Linux
5 (x64). I suppose that is reason for Warning on Summary screen in Wizard :
Warning (s):
1. The operating system of the VMWare VM is NOT SUPPORTED. This does not prevent conversion, but no support is provided for this conversion.
The tool is running on target Hyper-V 2012R2 host with .NET 4,5 installed along with Visual C++ Redist 2012 update.
After continuing conversion (ignorring the warning above), conversion stops after sucessfuly snapshot creation on ESXi host with following error :
"One or more errors occurred. ---> System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Accelerators.Mvmc.ScxSshWrapper_x86.dll' or one of its dependencies. The specified module could not be found."
I also reboot Hyper-V host but same error appears every time .
Thnx.
Update#1: I have to install both x64 and x86 Visual Studio Redist 2012 Update 4 to avoid stop error on .dll. The main warning (VM not supported stays).
Now I have new problem, during Uninstall Tools step conversion stops with message: Host does not Exist. When open error log: there is :
VERBOSE:    Attempting to establish an SSH connection.
07/23/2014 17:06:56 +02:00  [3]  VERBOSE:    Finished creating snapshot of the source virtual machine
07/23/2014 17:06:59 +02:00  [3]  DEBUG:    Caught ManagedSshFacadeException trying to open SSH connection: ErrorCode=0xC0040202, Message=Host does not exist
07/23/2014 17:07:04 +02:00  [3]  VERBOSE:    System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. ---> Microsoft.Accelerators.Mvmc.ScxSshCommon.ManagedSshFacadeException: Host does not exist
Update#2: Host unknown error was because Debian wasn't in internal DNS of Hyper-V host, after adding Linux to DNS error went away (it seems to use DNS name to establish SSH connection). However after that I received errors in same "Uninstall Tools"
step about connection rejected because of too many failures for root account... I saw that in the "Connection Step" of wizard I was unable to enter Password for Root account for selected VM, (I don't know is that by design for Linux VM's). So I beleive
that error is reffering to that stage of setup. Anyhow  I decided to manually remove VM Tools , shutdown VM and convert VM in offline mode. Now VM is working on Hyper-V, and I hope that this few hours of troubleshooting will help someone. After all there
are still some questions :
1. Why Warning : 1. The operating system of the VMWare VM is NOT SUPPORTED - is displayed for Debian 7 which is on supported list of guest OS
2. Why online conversion didn't work, and why password for root account in VM (under Connection portion of wizard) could not be entered.
If anyone have answers to above question please share your knowledge.
Regards,

MVMC 3.0 did not include any new features for Linux so I doubt the results will be different. We did add support for RHEL 7, CentOS 7 and Oracle 7.
For your questions:
1 - Since VMWare does not have a specific choice for Deb 7, newer versions may by now, we throw the warning as we cannot determine what version of Linux you are trying to convert when you select [Other Linux X64]. Deb 7 is supported by MVMC as
we've tested it and know it works. Other Linux distros may work as well that are not supported but they have not been tested.
2 - Most likely you did not have the VMWare VM running when trying to do the online conversion or it could not be resolved in DNS by the vSphere server. When running the MVMC tool did you notice if it had a DNS name associated with it when you selected
it in VMWare?
The MVMC requires the VMWare VM to be in a running state and resolvable in DNS by both the MVMC system and the VMWare vSphere server to verify the root password and remove the VMWare tools. As you have stated, you can remove the VMWare tools manually
and run the MVMC and it will work as well. If you leave the VMWare tools installed and do the conversion we disable the VMWare tools on the Hyper-V VM once booted. They are still there but should not be in a running state and you can remove them if desired
at this point.

  • Best practices for installing Win 10 under Hyper-V on Server 2012R2 host

    Yeah, yeah, I know I could probably get my answers after spending 10 hours reading hundreds of isolated threads here.  I've already put in about 2 hours, and I'm exhausted.  Plus, this site does not have a very sophisticated search function.
    I want to install Win10 as a VM on my Server 2012R2 machine.  I am not currently hosting any other VMs, so my first decision was whether to try it using Hyper-V or VirtualBox.  I started with VirtualBox, but I ran into two problems: networking
    and video.  Also, VirtualBox itself seems to have some issues with failing to install the extension pack.  So now I think I'll give Hyper-V a shot.
    I found some blog posts from last year providing guidance on setting up Hyper-V for Win10, but given the rate of change of this beta OS, I expect there are many new "features" that can be mitigated against by specific settings on the VM.
    Some specific questions:
    1. Generation 1 or Generation 2 in the Hyper-V setup?  The blogs I've seen say to use Gen1, but provide no justification.  Perhaps because they are using Win8 as the host?  I am using 2012R2.
    2. Does the Win10 ISO file need to be continually available to the VM, or is it only used in the initial installation?
    3. How do I get the VM to access the GPU card, which has lots of memory, over the useless onboard video chip which only has 8MB and no 3D instruction set?  This was a dealbreaker with VirtualBox.
    4. I anticipate many issues with networking, but I'll start with this: I have dual onboard NICs going into a managed switch.  Should I just give one physical NIC to the VM and let the host have the other?  I think I'm going to have some issues
    with DHCP IP address assignment, but we'll see.  Any best practices here would be helpful.
    Thanks.

    >1.
    I'd use Gen 1, that is a BIOS type boot, but that's just because I've had
    less trouble than with Gen2 VM's.
    >2.
    Only during install, refresh, reset, or sfc.
    >3.
    No virtualization solution does it easily, but there is RemoteFX if you can
    get a Windows 10 client to use it.  I've never tried.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/16652.remotefx-vgpu-setup-and-configuration-guide-for-windows-server-2012.aspx
    >4.
    That's what I would do (assigning one NIC to the VM, and one the host).  If
    both are receiving an IP address right now from DHCP, they will continue to
    do so the new way unless you have a managed switch that would prevent more
    IP addresses.  It's hard to tell...

  • How to manage a Hyper-V 2012R2 Host from Windows 7?

    AFAIK This is the official Hyper-V Manager for Windows 7: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7887 it explicitly lists Hyper-V versions up to 2008R2,
    there is no mention of 2012 or 2012R2, and from trying to connect to my new Hyper-V 2012R2 I can confirm that it doesn't want to work.
    From reading the docs on Hyper-V 2012/2012R2 remote management I've come to the conclusion that its only possible with Windows 8+ or Server 2012+ , but it cannot be used to manage Hyper-V 2008/2008R2...
    Someone please tell me that this is just one big mistake on my part and that the product owner for Hyper-V at Microsoft is not this stupid...

    Hi,
    On Windows7 platform you can manage Hyper-V server under the 2008r2 versions.

  • NLB converging problem VM1 on 2008R2-host VM2 on 2012R2-host

    Hello
    We are in the process of uppgraring our Hyper-V enviroment from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2.
    We migrate the VM's from 2008 to 2012 on volume at a time and now I have run into a problem with NLB between
    two VM's, VM1 is on 2008-host and VM2 is migrated to 2012-host. Both VM's run OS 2008 R2.
    The migration steps we use is:
    Stop the VM on 2008-host
    Copy VHD to 2012 Cluster storage
    Create new VM on 2012-host (from Failover Cluster Manager)
    On VM2 I added a second NIC and set the same IP as the original.
    I have Enabled MAC adress Spoofing and tried setting a static MAC on the NLB NIC but without any luck.
    But the VM is stuck in status Converging.
    I have read most threads I can find on this issue and tried most suggested solutions.
    My question now is if there are any problem in running NLB on VM's when they are on different Hyper-V versions (2008R2/2012R2, both is Datacenter Edition)
    /Anders

    Hi,
    Which NLB mode you are using? If you are using the IGMP mode you need to configure your switch to allow the NLG data through.

  • Trouble migrating 2008R2 VM to 2012R2 Host. Intergrated Components fail

    Hello All
    We have a new 2012 R2 server with Hyper-V.
    I'm trying to migrate the VMs from 2012 Std Host but when I move a 2008 VM it seems to struggle to load the intergrated components or it's having trouble with the built in components from the 2008 VM.  It appears to be the same with our 2011 SBS VM
    too.  The 2011 fails to even create the virtual NIC within the VM.
    I've successfully moved two 2003 VM's without issue.
    Help please?
    Thanks
    Daren

    Hi Daren,
    Try to do Mark's solution and you can try to do as follows:
    Shut down all Hyper-V virtual machines on the host then stop the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management
    service
    net stop "Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management"
    Copy all virtual machines you want to migrate to WS2012R2 Hyper-V host then
    Import Virtual Machine…
    Install integration services.
    Hope this will be helpful.

  • ESXi 3.5 32 bit version - Downloadable ISO

    Hello,
    Does anyone has VMware Hypervisor 3.5 32bit version, downloadable ISO?
    My ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0, build #207095 is not updateable, as I would have had to grab the update by June 2011.
    I have had this test machine sitting all this while unpatched etc., as it was not in a production environment.
    Now I need the use of a test machine and I do not have access to a 64bit machine and I just want to install the 3.5 again.
    I have a BDC running on it and I can move it using Vmware Stand Alone Converter between my ESXi 5.5 U5 server and back.
    I just want to have the latest patched installation on 32bit hardware!
    If anyone has a link that I can get the latest 32 bit ISO, please let me know.
    I have been searching downloads on this site to no avail. I believe they have ended support for 32 bit versions.
    Thanks

    Hello A.P.
    Whilst your statement is a helpful answer to my issue....
    When I go there to download it this is what I get:
    "You either are not entitled or do not have permissions to download this product.
    Check with your My VMware Super User, Procurement Contact or Administrator.
    If you recently purchased this product through VMware Store or through a third-party, try downloading later."
    So I have to resort to getting it from somewhere else. I did manage to get it from another link (undisclosed), and I have done a clean install and I am now running on build 391406
    Thanks

  • Printing problems on Server 2008R2 - Server 2012R2

    Hi,
    We have troubles with Firefox and printing pages.
    First i want to say i have already tried all this steps:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-printing-problems-firefox
    Let me explain my problem:
    In a TerminalServer Session i want to print a website from firefox.
    Sending the print job in Firefox works without error reports, but then the printer "Data" lamp is blinking and the printer Says proccessing.
    First i thought the printer has been broken but then i tried this on 6 other printers in our company.
    Printers: HP, Sharp, Brother, Develop.
    Every Printer has the same problem. No one could print anything anymore. I had to turn off the printers to get them working again.
    Resetting the about:config -> print_printers was not working, after this the printer was printing one Job then the problem was there again.
    I also have deleted the profile in AppData, but this has not resolved the problem.
    So can you please tell me what the problem is?

    Hi,
    The Dump File has abaout 290mb, what should i do with that file?
    The Machines are running on 2 different Hyper-V 2012R2 Hosts,(1 HP Server and 1 Supermicro Server, Intel Xeon 2620V2) the latest Integration Services Drivers on the guest machines are up to date.
    This is the printing Problem:
    Firefox sends the Webpage to the Printer. After a short time the printing Job is cleared from the list of actual Jobs.
    The Printer Says now he got a Job an says "Processing...", well.. this happens by every printer in our Company.
    Only turning off the Printer and on again makes the Printer working again to print anything from other programs.
    At the moment where someone sends a print Job from Firefox (Problem exists only on TerminalServers 2008, 2008R2, 2012, 2012R2.) to any Printer, the Printer must be restarted to work again.
    Printing from Server 2003R2 works.

  • 2012R2 Checkpoint Backups Fail - "The disk signature of disk1 is equal to the disk signature of disk0"

    Before reading any further please note there are no actual disk signature problems per other threads on technet. I mounted all VHD's on the host and none reported offline. I manually checked all VHD disk signatures to the host and all were unique. I loaded
    a brand new fresh 2012R2 VM/VHD and at first fine, but after installing updates the problem occurs.
    I believe a Windows Update is causing this error but do not know which one. I had a 2012 (non r2) VM that backed up fine, however after upgrading it to 2012R2 integration services and updates, this VM also has the below listed errors. Whether or not there
    is only one disk in the VM or multiple the following error is occurring. If I save all the VM's first I get a good and successful backup and checkpoint/snapshot transfers to backup location correctly. It is only when the VM's are running and checkpoint the
    process fails.
    When a backup is initiated on the 2012R2 host the VM's enter into the backing up state and are still live (not saved).
    The following sequence of events occur in the VMs:
    Event ID: 58
    Source: partmgr
    "The disk signature of disk 1 is equal to the disk signature of disk 0"
    Event ID: 7036
    Source: Service Control Manager

    "Volume F: (\Device\HarddiskVolume4) is healthy. No action is needed"
    Event 157

    I can see in device manager that a Microsoft Virtual Disk is created and then disappears (greys out if viewing hidden devices)
    Once Event 157 occurs, the VM's are merged back successfully and the following error occurs on the host.

    Hi CCPD,
    Thanks for contacting Microsoft.
    From your description, I learnt that the issue you are experiencing is that you failed to backup VMs when the VM is running. Pleas let me know if I misunderstand anything.
    Firstly, please let me know which backup tool you are using to perform backup. And please let mw know how the issue goes if you use Windows Server Backup feature.
    After that, please install the Windows Server 2012 R2 newest update rollup as below.

  • 2012R2 Cluster "Protected Network" not working / no failover

    hi,
    I have two 2012R2 hosts running in a cluster. Hardware is exactly the same. I created a Virtual Network on both Hyper-V managers. Live migration is correctly working.
    However i was testing one of the new features "Protected Network" where the VM would failover to the other node when the virtual network fails. When i try it and disconnect the cables on the node where the VM is running i see it going to error
    state but nothing happens (other then the VM being not available anymore). I've waited for hours but no failover.
    Am i missing something?

    Hi,
    Network health detection and recovery is now available at the virtual machine level for a Hyper-V host cluster. If a network disconnection occurs on a protected virtual network, the cluster live migrates the affected virtual machines to a host where that
    external virtual network is available. For this to occur there must be multiple network paths between cluster nodes.

  • Are Hyper-V 2012R2 checkpoints Application data consistent? How does it use now VSS during checkpoints creation?

    Are Hyper-V 2012R2 checkpoints Application data consistent? How does it now use VSS during checkpoints creation?
    I read the article http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=15759 that now WS2012 R2 Hyper-V changed how it performs backups.
    That is unofficial info.  I can't find any info about that in msdn, but that is critical.That is about data integrity.
    Is this true?
    Does this mean that we may not use VSS in Hyper V server backup application any more? Will Hyper-V 2012R2 host (WM is running) when i am creating a checkpoint,
    call VSS to only flush VSS Writers during this process for target child VM to make application data crash consistent state? And the volume shadow copy wn't be used? Only vhdx +avhdx witch will merged later, right?

    There are a couple levels to this.
    If VSS is there, VSS is used (just as before).  But there is a bit more happening around it than simply placing the VM in a saved state.
    However, if VSS is not there (in the VM) then the behavior is slightly different (this is really to support Linux VMs that don't support VSS) - and still achieve a good VM backup.
    In another blog post I see it described this way:
    Online backup for Linux VMs – even though there’s no VSS support in Linux, the Microsoft guys have managed to find a way to create consistent backups of running Linux VMs, by doing what’s essentially called a “filesystem freeze” by briefly stopping
    all disk I/O inside the VM until the host creates a VSS snapshot of the VM on the host (thus getting a file-consistent backup with zero downtime) – once the snapshot is done, disk I/O is resumed and then the actual file copy process starts
    Flemming shows the process here:
    http://flemmingriis.com/changes-in-hyper-v-backup-in-2012-r2/
    If you are calling VSS to perform a backup - nothing has changed.  The only thing that has changed is the 'how it happens' , not the 'what you get' and 'how you call it'
    This way if you call VSS to perform a backup - you get a good one, no matter the OS in the VM, nor its support for VSS.

  • Server 2012R2 looses vEthernet switches and cannot stop a starting Vm.

    We have three 2012R2 Host Servers in a Failover Cluster, there are 14 Hyper-V VM’s in the cluster.
    Yesterday Host3 went down because 3 network adapters disappeared. That left 2 servers (Host1 and Host2) active (that’s sufficient to run all the virtual servers). But for some reason all the virtual servers automatically
    moved to only one host server. One server cannot support all the virtual servers. However this server tried to run all the virtual servers which made none of the servers active. It showed all the vm servers “starting” but never “running”. By rebooting the
    host server that held the VM’s, all the VM’s automatically moved to the other good host server and the same thing happened.
    So here are the 2 problems that happened:
    On Host3 three network adapters disappeared. And could not be recovered without re-installing the operating system. These are needed for the VM’s to run.
    The adapters are created when virtual switchs are created in Hyper-V. The 3 are vEthernet (LAN Virtual Switch), vEhternet (iSCSI2 Virtual Network), and vEthernet (iSCSI 2 Virtual Network)
    There does not seem to be any way of turning off a VM when it is in the “Starting” state.

    Please post in the Hyper-V forum, this forum is for Virtual Server 2005.

  • MP3 Converter on file server only?

    Is there a way you can run the MP3 converter before recordings are transferred to the FTP server? The reason I ask is that our recordings will need to go over a WAN connection to the file store. Converting to MP3 prior to the transfer would help with a lot of bandwidth being saved.

    Unfortunately there is no way to achieve this requirement within CCA. MP3 Converter should be loaded on the File Server Host and requires a third party piece of freeware
    that must be downloaded (LAME.EXE).
    One workaround would be to move your File Server inside the LAN where CCA resources are running and create a script to move the recordings outside.

    You're running a very old version of 5.5 so one of the first things I'd do is to install the latest patches.

    We have a Dell T420 server running ESXi 5.5. The host has a single E5-2407 CPU (4 Core 2.2 GHz no Hyperthreading), 16 GB of RAM, and local RAID storage. The host runs a single Windows Server 2008 VM, which was a P2V conversion. The VM is currently assigned 1 Socket and 4 Cores, matching the host CPU. Since setting up this server about a year ago, it has had a recurring problem pop up every few months. When the problem happens, the Server 2008 VM suddenly has max CPU usage and terrible performance, but CPU is being maxed not by a single program, but from several normal processes. For example, WMI, explorer.exe, and task manager may all show 30% CPU usage. Meanwhile, though the Guest VM has 100% CPU usage, the Host will show it only using 300-500 MHz of CPU, or about 7% of available. This is despite the fact it's the sole VM and has full...

  • (Solved) Audio in Flash

    Hi, I am new to these forums and Arch Linux.  I am a converted Debian user.
    So far, I find Arch extremely efficient and nice.  The community in particular is extremely helpful.
    On to my actual problem, I cannot get audio to work in flash videos.  While I am against using Adobe programs in general, I decided to break down and get it anyway because I want to watch things on YouTube and MegaVideo.  In the wiki it told me to edit my /etc/rc.conf and edit my blacklisting module.  I input what was said there (which I did yesterday and can no longer find in the wiki), but then my flash videos stopped working.
    Any ideas?

    The Wiki wrote:The fix is easy, just disable oss (almost all programs are converted to alsa these days) by blacklisting the oss module in /etc/rc.conf in the MODULES section: !snd-pcm-oss
    I did this, and it made Flash stop working, so I changed it back.  The sound in VLC does not work either, which is weird considering the test sound worked.  I had another person install Arch on my comptuer, so I am not sure what to say about how it is configured to have my problem more detailed.
    I opened the ALSA mixer, and everything seems to be in order in that regard, but I cannot get the sound to work on either firefox or vlc.  I was suggest to do this:
    sudo modprobe snd_pcm_oss
    But that did not enable firefox or any other kind of sound to be enabled.  So, I am back to the drawing board.
    I have tried researching the problem, but it is difficult to know what to research.
    Oh, and alsa is also in my daemons in my rc.conf.
    This may help to explain the error.  When I try to open vlc from the command prompt it says this:
    [0x8d00548] jack audio output error: failed to connect to JACK server
    [0x8d00548] oss audio output error: cannot open audio device (/dev/dsp)
    My lspci says:
    ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller

  • First attempt at a package - rstudio-desktop-preview

    Hi all - I've been interested in providing a package for the preview release of RStudio for quite some time now and I figured that I might as well just give it a shot - what's the worst that could happen.  I read through some of the threads but I guess I just want some feedback on if everything looks alright and if it would be reasonable to submit this to the AUR.  It builds for me and works great on my system.  However I feel like I cheated a little because I just modified the PKGBUILD of rstudio-desktop-bin so that it would work with the preview release; this seems sensible to me but I'm not sure if I need to give the maintainer of that package any credit somewhere.
    PKGBUILD:
    # Contributor: dasonk < dasonk at gmail dot com >
    pkgname=rstudio-desktop-preview
    pkgver=0.98.788
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="A new integrated development environment (IDE) for R (binary version from RStudio official website)"
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    license=('GPL')
    url="http://www.rstudio.org/ide/download/preview"
    depends=('r>=2.11.1' 'qtwebkit')
    conflicts=('rstudio-desktop' 'rstudio-desktop-git' 'rstudio-desktop-bin')
    provides=("rstudio-desktop=${pkgver}")
    options=(!strip)
    _x86md5=be7da6269c6499770957f478f4eeaf2f
    _x64md5=db2fc2ce37dc4d16e12bc95c85eaa731
    case "$CARCH" in
    'i686')
    _arch=i386
    md5sums=($_x86md5)
    'x86_64')
    _arch=amd64
    md5sums=($_x64md5)
    esac
    source=("https://s3.amazonaws.com/rstudio-dailybuilds/rstudio-${pkgver}-${_arch}.deb")
    install="$pkgname".install
    package() {
    msg "Converting debian package..."
    cd "$srcdir"
    tar zxpf data.tar.gz -C "$pkgdir"
    install -dm755 "$pkgdir/usr/bin"
    cd "$pkgdir/usr/lib/rstudio/bin"
    rm lib*.so.*
    cd "$pkgdir/usr/bin"
    ln -s -f ../lib/rstudio/bin/rstudio rstudio-bin
    rstudio-desktop-preview.install:
    post_install() {
    [ -e $(which xdg-icon-resource) ] && xdg-icon-resource forceupdate --theme hicolor
    update-mime-database /usr/share/mime &>/dev/null
    post_upgrade() {
    post_install
    post_remove() {
    post_install
    Now I've read that just converting debian packages isn't best practice but it seems reasonable here.  I also read that you really should only provide PKGBUILD for architectures that you've personally tested on - I only tested on amd64 so should I get rid of the i386 (even though I'm pretty sure it'll work just fine)?
    Thanks for any feedback.

    Trilby wrote:There are already two (redundant) -git packages in the AUR for rstudio - what's different about this one?
    Good question!
    rstudio-desktop is built from the sources (not the binaries) but it out of date and I'm not interested in the official release
    rstudio-desktop-bin is what I based my PKGBUILD off of.  This is using the debian binaries from the official releases to install.  These only get updated every so often (not quite often enough for my liking with how quick Rstudio has been adding new features).
    rstudio-desktop-git is the git version of rstudio.  I can't get this to build at the moment and is a little too unstable for my liking.
    Rstudio provides 'preview' releases which offer a decent compromise between stability and getting the newest features.  This is what I want to offer.  Honestly if you think that this would just clutter the AUR with something that is unnecessary then I don't need to upload it to the AUR but figured that if I was interested in it then somebody else might be as well.

    In these cases it's common practice to add them as contributor.
    Note that you should put yourself as maintainer.
    i386 : you could comment those lines, and add that they may work but haven't been tested.
    you should add -bin to the name of the package.
    Thanks for the feedback! I changed the name to rstudio-desktop-preview-bin.  I added Meow as a contributor and changed myself to be the maintainer.  And actually since yesterday they updated the preview release so I upped the version and updated the md5sums. Here is the updated PKGBUILD

    rm lib*.so.*
    cd "$pkgdir/usr/bin"
    ln -s -f ../lib/rstudio/bin/rstudio rstudio-bin
    Is that how you envisioned me commenting out the i686 stuff?  Is there anything glaringly wrong with this? Thanks for the feedback and do you think it would be worth it to upload to AUR or should I just keep this to myself...
